My boss finally paid me up until this week for weeks he hasn’t paid. However, he skipped the entire pesach (which I don’t expect) and the rest of days like Isru Chag, which was Wednesday + Thursday and Friday.. I think it’s not fair and I approached him about it but he said: “That is included”

What is there for me to do now? Anyone suggestions?

Find a job that pays on time. Best bet is that if he hasn’t paid you its because he does not have the money and probably won’t have it going forward. A job isn’t much good if it doesn’t pay you in full and on time. (And hey halachah requires that too)

Its also the SECULAR LAW to pay on time and the fines are heavy if you dont

I know business is not that great. Actually, I was offered a much better well paying job, but i’m already comfortable here and I like the place so I’m in big dilemma if its time to move on to something else.. but can’t make a decision

    but can’t make a decision

It’s really not all that difficult. Ask yourself the following questions:

Can you afford to go on without a paycheck?

Do you love your job so much that you’d do it for free (as a hobby)?

Is the comfort you have at your job going to cause you discomfort regarding the lack of a paycheck (i.e. would your spouse [if any] be unhappy about it? Which discomfort is greater?

Is there some compelling reason to remain there even without a paycheck (i.e. they will provide some valuable experience that you can’t get elsewhere)?

Answer those questions and you’ll see very clearly what you need to do.

And once you move on, make sure you drag his butt to bais din and/or civil court for the back pay that he owes you.

Comfort and progress are often opposing.

    You can get comfortable elsewhere.

Everyone says I worked here long enough and I have to do what’s best for me. I guess my answer is to go, but i’m afraid I will get no money at all what I’m owed.. and I worked for it so I deserve it.

Staying because you hope to get paid is called “throwing good money after bad money” (or, in your case, throwing good time after bad time). Do you have any reason (aside from hopeful thinking) to believe that things will get better and that you will actually get paid if you leave?

Leave, and drag him to bais din and/or secular court.

Hatzlocha!! At least you are realistic, knowing you probably won’t ever see that money! Get out fast, before he owes you more!

As my friend The Wolf said, if you need the paycheck (and I expect most of us do) then it is time to move.

As for staying because you are afraid that he won’t pay you the back pay all I can say is don’t let him go deeper into the hole. If you work for another 6 months chances are that at the end of it he will owe you *MORE* back pay then he does now.

OK, SO NOW HOW DO I TELL HIM THAT I WANNA LEAVE???

    Firstly, don’t shout.

Secondly, go into his office, and explain, calmly and rationally, that you need a paycheck. Normal ethics would say that you should give two weeks’ notice, but in this instance, I think leaving without that is justified.

Tell him that you are leaving because (a) you’re not getting paid and (b) you don’t see any changes on the immediate horizon. In addition, tell him that you are not relinquishing any rights to any monies you are already owed and that if you don’t see payment by (pick a reasonable date), you will be taking him to bais din and/or secular court. Then you leave.

That’s all there is to it. If he’s not paying you, he’s already broken the cardinal tenet of employment. You don’t owe him any consideration beyond civility.

Thank you WOLF and all others. I will think about it and approach him probably next week.

Do you have a good solid reason for waiting until next week? Is there any reason to think that by next week there will be any change (aside from his owing you an additional week’s pay)? If not, what are you waiting for?

I understand you want to be nice and mentchlichkeit about this, but unless you’re going to volunteer to work for a week for free, you have to do this TODAY. If he hasn’t been paying you, you owe him no considerations (such as the extra week) at all aside from basic civility.

Besides, the week you’re working for free will also delay you a week in your search for a paying job.

I actually got 4 great job offers so I’m on my way out now.. though I’m in big trouble making my final decision. I was offered 3 jobs in the place where I live, and another one for much greater pay out of town – 30 minutes by car.. Is it worth it for me to travel every day

    for more money?

One job recruiter told me like this: how is this job going to get you your next job. Factor that into your consideration.

In todays day and age, you can organize payments to be made in advance. If you are a salary earner there is NO excuse for delay in payments. If he is not paying you on time its either because of 3 things:

1.) He doesnt care, in which case you need to find a new job because I wouldnt work for a boss who doesnt appreciate my contribution to the company.

2.) he doesnt have the money, which means you should get out! Because its only a matter of time till he he wont pay you at all, for a month or permanently.

3.) He takes it for granted that you are frum and so is he thus he expects you to indulge his disorganization. In this case you need to remind him of the fact that majority of the gemarah focuses on payments and property- because in Judaism we take these things seriously! And this is also a business so it must be run professionally.

Its never a good idea to get too comfortable. It is better to always be on your toes and keep moving forward. Opportunities are rare and far between, if you don’t take it when they are offered you might be getting even more comfortable while you wait for the next opportunity to show up.

Is it worth it for me to travel every day

    for more money?

    That depends on:

    1) How much more money (minus traveling expenses)

    2) What you would be doing in that extra time ( e.g. it might not be worth it if it’s at the expense of your family and either way you’ll make ends meet)

    3) Whether or not all else is equal

    4) How much you like or dislike traveling
