What would you tell your friend who’s feeling like a piece of dirt?
What do you tell yourself when you’re feeling down?
What would you say to someone who has very low self confidence?
April 11, 2011 6:55 pm at 6:55 pm #758320am yisrael chaiParticipant-To be aware of your negative “self-talk,” what you think to yourself & tell yourself…it should be considered treif
-when the yetzer hara cannot get you in the classic way (an overt sin), it’ll try to go this route (the “down” route, no pun intended
-actively give yourself a mental pat on the back whenever you catch yourself doing something good
-use what you did incorrectly as a learning experience, not a bashing one!

April 12, 2011 3:36 am at 3:36 am #758326eclipseMemberI would say:
Change the tape/CD.
The one in your head.
Examples:
CHANGE: “I’m such an idiot!” TO:
“I’ll do better next time/I usually do this well”
CHANGE: “No one understands me!” TO:
“Not everyone understands/values me,but lots of people do”
April 12, 2011 3:39 am at 3:39 am #758328am yisrael chaiParticipantThat’s the negative self-talk. Consider it tarfus!
April 12, 2011 5:33 am at 5:33 am #758329aries2756ParticipantWhen you see a person with low self-esteem or low self-confidence the first thing you need to do is pay them a compliment that will help lift their face off the ground. It may be the only compliment they get all day and it can be very important to them. So it could be as simple as “you have a beautiful smile” or “what a great sweater your wearing”. Anything that would make them feel special or good about themselves. Then you can measure their mood and take it from there.
I wouldn’t necessarily speak about a person’s mood, just keep giving them positive encouragement and posiitve signals. If they speak about it, just keep giving positive reinforcement without judging.

April 12, 2011 3:04 pm at 3:04 pm #758331eclipseMemberBecause other people say whatever the heck comes to their heads.
And break others.
I LOVE complimenting others, watching even the gloomiest faces light up with joy…. helping a tense atmosphere loosen up with spontaneous laughter…
May I never let what others have done to me turn me into…them.
