April 12, 2013 3:52 pm at 3:52 pm #1007785WIYMemberWow finally a new topic that was never discussed here!
April 12, 2013 4:44 pm at 4:44 pm #1007786DaMosheParticipantIt’s not a matter of the time it takes, it’s a matter of what the proper bracha is. Would you wash and make hamotzi on a piece of sponge cake?
April 12, 2013 4:53 pm at 4:53 pm #1007787dafyomi2711Memberno sponge cake is not bread pizza is!
April 12, 2013 4:56 pm at 4:56 pm #1007788Rabbi PerfectMemberDaMoshe: I believe OP was referring to what he stated as clearly hamotzi as he stated in his post. Although I am curious as to what the tzdadim are for those who say having just one slice (and some cases even 2) is mezonos? (If Maran poskins that even on a small slice of bread you say hamotzi, a k’zayit for birkat hamazon, and a k’beitza for nt’y)
April 12, 2013 4:58 pm at 4:58 pm #1007789🐵 ⌨ GamanitParticipantDaMoshe- If you eat the entire pan of sponge cake that might actually be the proper bracha. Regarding pizza we learned that one slice is considered a snack, and therefore the proper bracha is mezonos. If you’re eating two slices, than it’s considered a meal and the proper bracha is hamotzi. Now if someone is lazy to wash they can decide to eat one slice, make mezonos, eat it and make an al hamichya. Then a half hour later take another slice.
April 12, 2013 5:15 pm at 5:15 pm #1007790I can only tryMemberSeveral years ago my Rosh Yeshiva addressed this in a shiur. To the best of my recollection, here are some of the things he said:
1) Some pizza dough is made with water, some with may pairos.
2) Two or more slices require a hamotzi, even may pairos pizza.
April 12, 2013 5:19 pm at 5:19 pm #1007791DaMosheParticipantGamanit, I don’t disagree with you. Different poskim have different views on the bracha for pizza, and everyone should follow his or her posek. The OP seemed to imply that someone who could make either bracha, and a hamotzi is preferable. This is not the case.
April 12, 2013 5:26 pm at 5:26 pm #1007792popa_bar_abbaParticipantAm I alone in thinking Pizza should have its own special brocha like wine does?
April 12, 2013 5:52 pm at 5:52 pm #1007793dafyomi2711Memberdamoshe hamotzi is preferable mezonos is only a safek if your yozeh why pick the safek over the vadai?
April 12, 2013 5:58 pm at 5:58 pm #1007794DaMosheParticipantdafyomi2711: Because if my Rav has paskened that I should make a mezonos, that’s what I’m going to do!
April 12, 2013 8:16 pm at 8:16 pm #1007795Sam2ParticipantDafyomi: You’re also Vadai Yotzei with Mezonos.
The problem with the 1 slice/2 slice differentiation is that people base it off R’ Moshe. When pizza first came out in America and you bought a slice, it was from a 12-inch pie. Now the average New York slice is 18 inches.
April 14, 2013 3:10 pm at 3:10 pm #1007796dafyomi2711Membersam2 your not yozei it dosent matter how big the slice is either would you make mezonos on an 18 inch piece of bread?
April 14, 2013 3:25 pm at 3:25 pm #1007797writersoulParticipantSam@: No more- in Monsey, half the stores are shrinking their pies to 15-16 inches. 🙁
But I’ve wondered- if you make a mezonos on one slice, intending only to have one, and then immediately afterward decide to have another, what do you do?
April 15, 2013 12:07 pm at 12:07 pm #1007798no longer need seminaryMemberwe hold that if it is ur meal u make a hamotzi. if u r having one peice as a snack then its mezones
December 31, 2013 10:07 pm at 10:07 pm #1007799Binyamin2711Participantbread is a snack ha I hear
December 31, 2013 10:19 pm at 10:19 pm #1007800🐵 ⌨ GamanitParticipantBinyamin2711- I sometimes eat a small sandwich as a snack. If often feels weird to wash for a snack, but bread not made with juice doesn’t become mezonos just because you’re snacking on it.

Are you two “related”??
March 13, 2014 4:50 am at 4:50 am #1007802I. M. ShluffinParticipant@writersoul – if you made an initial mezonos on slice, because you had only one slice in mind, then proceeded to eat another, you can eat it and then bentsch. Don’t forget to clean up when you’re done.
Note to the general public that I’ve already seen expressed in other threads: please don’t use psaks from the CR unless you’ve asked your LOR about it. Ask for sources. Many might be personal opinions. No offence intended to anyone. I’m sure you’ll all make great poskim one day.

March 13, 2014 5:59 pm at 5:59 pm #1007806MDGParticipant“why do so many people make a mezonos on pizza “
Is seems, at face value, that the Mechaber (siman 168) holds that only nuts, honey, etc baked with bread make it mezonot. Whereas bread baked with cheese or meat make it Hamotsi. We differentiate based on intent: dessert food vs dinner food.
But the Taz says that anything baked inside/on bread makes it Mezonot. According to the Taz, pizza is mezonot, unless one is Kove’a Se’uda. Therefore the only question is when is someone Kove’a Se’udat on mezonot.
