Does gum need a Brocha? I always make Shehakol, but I was thinking if it’s a Shaila since you don’t actually “eat” it. Does anybody know?
March 23, 2011 1:21 am at 1:21 am #751882estherhamalkaMemberI have another question about gum. I know a lot of people in my circle allow themselves and their families to chew unkosher gum, like wrigleys, trident etc. Not the Israeli ones, the ones made here in America, and their reasoning is that it is not being eaten,so it is ok to chew. My father never allowed that,so I am stringent with myself and my kids and do not allow them to chew this unkosher gum. What do you all think about that? Who is right? Can we be makel or should we be machmir? Please don’t tell me to ask my rabbi,as I dont feel I have to,as this gum doesn’t interest me,and my kids are fine with the kosher stuff. I was just asking just to ask…..

March 23, 2011 2:00 am at 2:00 am #751885smartcookieMemberEsther- is it allowed to only lick and chew pork without swallowing it? To me it’s the same thing.
March 23, 2011 2:02 am at 2:02 am #751886GrandmasterMemberDon’t you swallow the sugar (or whatever the taste is coming) from the gum? So it would seem to require a brocha rishona but perhaps not a bracha achrona since it is almost certainly less than a kzayis.
For the aforementioned reason (probably amongst others) you can only chew kosher gum.

I believe that Rav Ovadia Yosef says that one can chew UNflavored gum on a fast day. I guess flavoring is like food. In that case, it should be kosher.
March 23, 2011 2:23 pm at 2:23 pm #751890mewhoParticipantive never seen unflavored gum
March 23, 2011 2:33 pm at 2:33 pm #751891mewhoParticipanti used to chew regular gum and one day my son asked me to only chew the ”kosher” brands. its been a few years now and that is exactly what i am doing.
