So I mentioned to someone that I love bread dipped in vinegar and they told me it talks about that in the gemara. Something about being a great thing to eat in the hot weather…

Anyway, anyone know the source? I would love to know!

My favorite is balsamic, but I love Ume Plum, Cider and White vinegar also. Its the only shalom bayis problem my husband and I really have – he hates vinegar AND the smell…so I try to avoid it.

Raw unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar is delicious on Beer Battered Fish and Chips. Vinegar in general can be used on the skin like Aloe Vera for Sun Burns (I have used it myself). Vinegar has a cooling effect when applied to a Sun Burn. There is also a drink that the Slaves drank when picking Cotton in the Cotton Fields to cool off in the Summertime: 1 part Apple Cider Vinegar; 1 part Mo lases; 1part Ginger or Cayenne Pepper; and (Filtered ) water I heard that this drink was cooling when drunk and helped the Slaves pick Cotton on scorching hot days.

    SJSinNYC:

It doesn’t say anything there about hot weather (just as a tooth remedy). Perhaps there is another Mekor. If anyone can be Mezakeh the Rabbim…

SJS do you like eggplants? Baked eggplants in vinegar and garlic. You can dip your bread in garlic vinegar. Yum!

Yeah. Just slice or chop the eggplant and bake it with a bit of oil and salt. Mix fresh crushed garlic with vinegar and refrigerate.

the term is usde in Mishna Shabbos 14:4. the context is that if one feels pain in his teeth on Shabbos he can’t fill his mouth with vinegar, as long as he dosen’t spit it out, because if he spits, it is for medicinal purposes. But he CAN dip bread in vinegar, and if he is healed, he is healed, and he isn’t ????. the prohibition stated here only applies when it is a small pain, but when it is an a big pain, in the words of the Taz on Orach Chayim 328:32: A big pain throughout his body, it is permitted to rinse and spit with vinegar.

The actual gemorah is a few daf after the mishnah.
