Why do boys, from Pre-1-A right through high school (and of course Beis Medrash, etc.), have school six days a week while girls have school only five days a week? Not to even mention the mid-winter and other “vacation” days girls get that boys do not. Or the much longer hours boys put in for a school day.

They don’t want to overtax our brains, okay? Plus, we need to spend more time at home in the kitchen.

Boys have a looot more ground to cover and what to learn. Shas, etc. It takes time.

If you think the local girls school has too many days off, speak to the “committee” about increasing them.

    #1211211

not sure if you noticed, guys have a chiuv of learning torah and not wasting time while girls don’t.

I had Sunday school through 11th Grade. So, girls do have school on Sunday. I guess it depends on which school your talking about.

Because in Europe it was a good idea. Now the kids are choking/drowning but nobody really cares. And most parents are too stupid/incompetent to know what to do with their kids so they are happy when their kids have no down time, even if they are drowning. But that’s just my own personal/humble opinion, it’s not like the question hit a nerve or anything.

Yes, because by being in school they are being mevatel their chiyuv of being in the kitchen.

Can it have something to do with the teachers in BY being women and our nashim really cannot be away from the house 6 days a week?

We cannot expect nashim to do Shabbos prep and Motzai Shabbos cleanup and THEN put in 1or2 hours prep and THEN be in school with ahava and patience, with professionally prepared classes…… all day Sunday.

My girls have three hours of chessed requirements on Sundays.

The biggest problem with school on Sunday is that I don’t have time to wash their school clothes from Friday before they need to leave on Sunday. And I also believe it’s important to have a day free of carpools.

When I was in high school in NY, we had limudei Kodesh on Friday and limudei chol on Sunday. Both were half days. I don’t know if they still do it that way there. Here in Chicago, my girls never had school on Sunday but my son has had it since first grade. I agree with Syag – kids do need some down time.

The Bais Yaakov movement was created to keep our girls frum. Before Beis Yaakov girls learnt everything they needed to know at home. It was that way for thousands of years. Bais Yaakov was a response to a shas hadchak.

Will a six day school week make our girls frummer than a five day school week? No. So no need for six days. Will a six day school week allow boys to learn more Torah than a five days? Yes. So six days in Yeshiva. And more hours per day. And more days per year than girls. As it should be. This isn’t a contest where we need to compare boys and girls. And surely we needn’t c’v make them “equals”.

The problem with school on Sunday is that Washington the only day for family. My sister would pull her boys out as they resented.not being able to visit their grandparents. Besides, how much school is enough for eight year olds?

Boys have much less “after school time” than girls. Boys have early shachris through late mishmor.

SIDI – Older girls in BY school DO NOT have off on Friday. Everybody finishes around 11:30 – 12. Fortunately for me, in the school where my girls go (a private school) they DO have off on Fridays and are at home helping with the cooking and straightening up the whole day.

Because boys are in school 13 hours a day (Going to shachris 7am – finishing mishmor 8pm, starting in 6th or 7th grade elementary school!), 6 days a week. Girls start at 9 and finish by 3, with less school days per week to boot.

Syag, great post! (the first one)

Shopping, I was just pointing it out. I wasn’t saying its a good OR bad thing.

Nechomah, what do you call private schools? We are talking about Yeshivos and Beis Yaakovs which are private schools. And when I say older girls, I mean (at least) 9 year olds.

And, from what I understand, girls get a two week vacation before Pesach. And yes, they help their mothers. But they do have a nice amount of time for themselves as well.

“Because in Europe it was a good idea”

Please educate me on the schedules of boys yeshivos and girls yeshivos in europe. I would appreciate any resources that say that the average child at age 11 was in school as many hours per week as they are nowadays.

SIDI – BY is run by Chinuch Atzmai, which is with agreement through the government and supported by the government. Parents can get discounted tuition dependent on income, etc. That to me is like “public school” but I obviously do not mean secular school. My girls are in a school that does not take money from the government and we do not get a tuition break dependent on income (although I will say that our tuition is minimal compared to what is paid for any type of Jewish day school education in America) and they make their own rules as far as when they take vacation, etc. There are other schools, like for the different chassidim that are also more like a private school than a regular BY.

As far as time off before Pesach, depending on how the calendar falls out, BY ends somewhere around the 2nd to the 5th of Nissan. Many big girls make kaytanot for the little ones so that the mommies can clean and then spend their time in the afternoons helping with the cleaning. Again, not much time off here as far as I can calculate since less than 10 cleaning days to get ready for Pesach is pretty much doing things in a rush. Seminary girls (American high school age) do get off about a week before the girls in the elementary grades to give them more time to help before their little sisters get off.

The boys usually finish cheder before Pesach and Sukkos around the 7th or 8th of the month, so they have 1 week off before the chag and then have off Chol Hamoed just like the girls. Most students all go back the day after Isru Chag, except once the boys are in Yeshiva (ketana or gedolah), so they go back on Rosh Chodesh.

Girls have summer vacation in BY schools like the secular schools (although I think they’re starting to go back earlier than them to make sure they give a good foundation of the yomim nora’im beforehand) – so vacation is from July 1 through September 1. Private schools change that, and my daughter of high school age does not start her vacation until the 3rd week of Tammuz and the girls in elementary school finish 28th Tammuz. Our school starts back on 5 Elul. Keep in mind that my girls have off on Fridays from the 4th grade, but BY does not.

I know of a school called Chinuch Yerushalami that does not give a summer vacation – the teachers have off for 2 weeks mid-summer and the high school girls make a day camp for the little girls during that time. Their vacations are from the last week in Adar until R”Ch Iyar and then from the last week in Elul until R”Ch Cheshvan.

Total vacation time is actually pretty similar for all schools across the board for the girls.

Ours never did. Two days before Pesach (three if erev yom tov was Monday, so they were given Friday also). Otherwsie they had school, and I was really ticked off because I needed ALL my kids’ help.

What made it even worse, the schools always scheduled PTA conferences within the week before Pesach. Like I had nothing to do but sit in school all evening just before yom tov, waiting for a five minute conference telling me how sweet my girls are. Why thery could not do this the week AFTER Pesach, is beyond me. But no one ever asked my opinion.

I don’t see any sense in giving girls off Sunday but keeping them in school on Erev Shabbos Kodesh when their presence at home would be so enormously appreciated. If anything it should be the opposite.

Many people feel that we are neglecting our daughters’ education, especially in Torah studies. The traditional girls curriculum is designed for a frum housewife who has only limited contact with anyone outside our community, and for most women, that isn’t a “real world” scenario.

We probably should upgrade the curriculum, though the girls (not the women) will scream that it will result in a much longer school day, Sunday classes, etc.

The way the line goes (I heard this regarding snow days, but it’s the same thing) is, “because a yeshiva needs a heter to close, while a Bais Yaakov needs a heter to open”.

Maybe not all, but most boys yeshivas that are giving off for a month pesach and 2 1/2 weeks sukkos have the boys there over shabbos as well (sleep-away). They also get little more than 2 weeks summer vacation.

    4yo thread

Maybe because if boys didn’t have school on Sundays, then their moms would have more boys in the house. Boys may be more work to clean up after, and can be rambunctious. So maybe it was a gift to mothers, and/or fathers.

Plus seriously it is Sunday. The First Day.

The way one starts the first day of the week reflects on the rest.

We need to start the shavua with a good solid note. Boys do that through Torah study. It gets them in the routine.

Some girls’ schools have school on Sunday. I had school on sunday from fifth grade on.

I think it is goyish and poor chinuch to have off on Sunday. Someone once tried arguing with me that a girls’ job is to be home helping her mother, not sitting in school learning.

    Two problems with that argument:

    1. Then why are we sending them to school 5 days a week? Obviously, we do think they should be in school. And don’t say it’s to keep them off the streets. That is a pathetic way to look at girls’ purpose in life. She’s doing what she is doing all day just to keep her off the street even though it has no purpose? If that is what their mechanchim and parents think, what kind of message are you giving over? That their life has no purpose or meaning and the only thing that matters is that they stay off the streets!!!

    2. If the point were that they should be home helping their mothers, they would have off on Friday and not on Sunday.

And yes, they should have off on Friday as well as from Rosh Chodesh Nissan until the end of Pesach.

In EY, everybody has school the whole day on Sunday and Friday is the half day. Unfortunately being that Sunday is a “day off” in America, having school that day interferes with family activities and other things that people arrange specifically to do on the day off.

As far as girls helping at home, my girls are in a school where they have school on Friday mornings until 11, until 3rd grade, and then they have off. That is when they should be at home helping their mothers.

Even in BY schools, the seminary age girls have off from right around Rosh Chodesh Nissan. In our school, seminary age girls are off from around 23rd of Adar. That usually gives enough time to help their mothers clean. Most mothers would prefer that their little girls be in school as they are still too little to help very much, especially not for several hours at a time.

Sunday is what I call “family day” where we go out as a family somewhere. IMO its poor chinuch not to allow familes to spend time together and shabbos and Yom tov doesnt really count as there is a certain confinement that doesnt happen on sunday (Like going to the Park, Museum or some other activity that does not cause people to be on top of each other)

    Oversimplified

The Frankfurt girls school started in 1853.

(where did most of BY educators come from?)

There were some others as well

For Backward Poland of the tumultuous ’20s, it was a major innovation
