WHAT A CHUTZPA!!!
They raise the price on the weekend edition to $3!!!!
People cant put bread on their table and they have a Chuzpa to charge so much hard earned gelt for a newspaper? Dont they know we’re in a recession
I would rather buy a daily ‘goish’ newspaper that cost me only $0.50

January 20, 2011 6:40 pm at 6:40 pm #733459WolfishMusingsParticipantThe HaModia is not a necessity, it’s a luxury. Why are you getting so worked up over what the charge for a luxury is? If it’s too expensive, don’t purchase it.

Phew i thought they published an article that wasn’t to your taste.. Chill!! It is like saying cheese cake went up in price. It is clearly not a necessity!!
January 20, 2011 7:06 pm at 7:06 pm #733463apushatayidParticipantIs Hamodia THAT important that you are all worked up over it?
January 20, 2011 7:11 pm at 7:11 pm #733464real-briskerMembermisterhock – Firstly its not a chutzpa, you are not obligated to buy it if you dont want, they can charge whatever they want, if you wish to buy it gezunta heit if not there are many other jewish newspapers to choose from. Second – Nebach on you, you would be wiling to save one dollar and let SHMUTZ into your house! The goyisha newspapers are filled with such garbage I cant begin to comprehend how the difference to you isnt even worth a dollar!
January 20, 2011 7:19 pm at 7:19 pm #733465misterhockMemberMy real problem is because the Hamodia claims to be ‘The newspaper of Torah Jewry’ when they are very clearly a multi million dollar profit making business.

January 20, 2011 7:59 pm at 7:59 pm #733469charliehallParticipantIf you think they are charging too much, don’t buy it!
And what is wrong with a multimillion dollar profit-making business as long as it observes secular law and halachah? May there be more frum multimillion dollar profit-making businesses!

So what? It’s still a luxury. If it’s too expensive for you, don’t buy it.
when they are very clearly a multi million dollar profit making business.
They are a business producing a luxury item. Their purpose is to make money. I’m sorry if that disturbs you.
I’m curious as to what you consider to be an acceptable profit — and why that amount?

January 20, 2011 9:42 pm at 9:42 pm #733475WolfishMusingsParticipantMisterhock,
I’m still curious to know what you consider to be an acceptable level of profit. If being a “multi million dollar profit making business”* is unacceptable to you, I then ask you what *is* an acceptable level of profit which you think they are entitled to earn — and how did you pick that number.
The Wolf
* This is leaving aside the fact that it is far from “very clear” that they are, in fact, earning multi-millions of dollars in profit and that you have brought no evidence that they are even in the black, let alone making millions of dollars.
January 20, 2011 9:49 pm at 9:49 pm #733476WolfishMusingsParticipantYou also might want to consider the fact that the average HaModia reader is not poor. According to their website, the average household income of their readership is $147,000.
If that’s their average reader, then perhaps $3.00 an issue isn’t so much after all…

Not the kind of statement I’d expect from a guy whose go-to example of anti-torah philosophy is Ayn Rand, but I’m happy to agree.

A=A?
Not taking government money to which you aren’t entitled?
In general, I object to using a person’s name as an example of bad reasoning or heretical philosophy. It positively reeks of strawman fallacy.
Mods: Can you put up the rest of charlie’s post, please?
January 21, 2011 7:51 pm at 7:51 pm #733491charliehallParticipantAyn Rand, born a Jew, was an outspoken atheist and hedonist. She found no purpose in the commandments to take care of the welfare of our fellows or respect the established relationships of others, and justified her self-centered behavior with elaborate logical arguments. She considered religion of all sorts to be contrary to reason. Her “Collective” of followers had many of the characteristics of a religious cult.
BTW HaShem tells us not to take government (or any other) money to which we are not entitled.
January 21, 2011 8:23 pm at 8:23 pm #733492ItcheSrulikMemberI’m not an objectivist and the debate about whether objectivism is a cover for sociopathy or not is not one I want to start since I honestly don’t care. I’ll readily grant that she was anti-Torah; I was just saying that people who use her name as a dirty word are generally not so fond of “multi-million dollar profit-making businesses.”

This week they really enhanced it(permanently) & put the price up.

January 23, 2011 8:50 pm at 8:50 pm #733502Bed-StuyParticipantWhat’s new in Hamodia since the price change?
January 24, 2011 1:14 am at 1:14 am #733503mom of a fewMemberthere is a new magazine inside that is fuller and printed on nicer thicker paper to compete with the new ami magazine I guess….
January 24, 2011 4:51 am at 4:51 am #733504charliehallParticipant“I’ll readily grant that she was anti-Torah; I was just saying that people who use her name as a dirty word are generally not so fond of “multi-million dollar profit-making businesses.” “
I don’t think she is a dirty word. She was just a proponent of an anti-Torah philosophy that has snared many Jews for several generations now. It needs to be fought.
And as far as multi-million dollar profit-making businesses, I can’t understand why a frum Jew would oppose them as long as they operate within the bounds of secular law and halachah.
January 24, 2011 6:27 am at 6:27 am #733505truth be toldMemberIf their goal is to oust Ami, you can be sure, that if c”v successful their price will rise higher and service lower. No different than the established airlines selling dirt cheap tickets anytime another airline offers the same service. Then, once ousted, their price hits even higher.
At one point a cheap airline started offering decent priced tickets from NY to Pittsburg. The established companies, Continental.. lowered their tickets to $70 round trip including all taxes. Once they re-secured their route prices were higher than before.
Competition is good, for many reasons.
January 24, 2011 8:44 am at 8:44 am #733506fabieMemberDoes the Modia have a daily English version in N”Y? I haven’t seen this in E”Y.
January 24, 2011 12:04 pm at 12:04 pm #733507apushatayidParticipantOff topic. Where is Hamodia circulated that the avg income of their subscribers is $147,000? I wonder if Yeshiva administrators in the same markets would give the same number?
January 24, 2011 3:17 pm at 3:17 pm #733508tzippiMemberI doubt Hamodia is trying to trounce Ami, et al, as much as boost their circulation. I hope subscription prices won’t go up; they are keeping the new inserts non-glossy which should help.
But if people are willing to pay what they are for the weekly magazines, this new approach is quite understandable.
January 24, 2011 10:35 pm at 10:35 pm #733509bptParticipantWe get the weekend edition of Hamodia, not so much for the news as much as to show the kids where we stand.
Ami is not a subcription (yet) but we have gotten each issue so far.
And I absolutly believe the Hamodia reformatt was done in response to the Ami format.
Next up for Hamodia; a “comments” section on their webpage.
Without one, you’re sunk in 2011 as a serious news outlet
January 24, 2011 11:03 pm at 11:03 pm #733510NatMemberThe Hamodia is a phenomemnal paper under the direction of Gedolim such as the Gerrer Rebbe and Rav Matisyahu Solomon Shlit”a As kosher as you can get.
The Hamodia perhaps should have been a profitable newspaper – but alas it is definitely not. True that the weekly edition makes money – but the daily loses money. So why continue printing it? Because that what these Gedolim want! Rav M. Solomon said it very clearly in a drosho 2-3 years ago at the Agudah convention, and I quote “The Hamodia is not another paper that you should buy – it is the ONLY paper you should have in your house”. Of course he was not refering to the Yated – he was refering to bringing in any other daily into your house.
The Hamodia and the Yated are wonderful papers that can be brought into any Yiddishe house – I can’t say the same for any other newspaper.
Of course we now B”H have these quality magazines e.g. Mishpacha, Ami, Binah, Zman, etc.
So there is B”H plenty of kosher reading material for you and your kids.
Sure it costs money to keep kosher. But other than for chinuch reasons – there is no reason to buy any newspapers and magazines. But chunuch is a powerful reason – regardless of what it costs.
So, fargin them the few cents – so that they can cover their increased expenses and stay afloat – for our sake and our kids sake.

Why are you making an assertion that is clearly contradictory to what R. Solomon said?
