Is it just a lack of knowledge?
To my knowledge it should be spelled BOROUGH Park,
Correct me if I’m wrong,,,Who cares? It’s the “PARK” that’s a misnomer. Ever tried?!?

both are acceptable as can be easily verified by a google searchThe language is evolving, as is true of all living languages. In 100 years “Boro” will be only possible spelling, and “Borough” will be marked in dictionaries as archaic.
Google search just tells you how people spell it, not how they should spell it. “Boro” is a careless shortening of “borough”, just as “lite” and “nite” are often used instead of “light” and “night”.

Not necessarily careless. There can be thoughtful reasons for shortening a location name, such as for signage.
We say “THE Bronx” not just “Bronx”. We don’t say “The Brooklyn'” or “The Queens”. Likewise, certain acronyms or nomenclature just evolve and become the norm. In this case, obviously either work. If in doubt, try typing in “boro park” as your Uber destination and it will automatically redirect you to :”Borough Park’. Likewise, when sending mail to “The Bronx”, you don’t include “the” in the address line. Whats more important for Avram in Maryland is to know whether Owing Mill or Owings Mills or Silver Spring vesus Silver Springs and to know that the Uber driver will deposit him in Kensington( near Silver Spring(s)) rather than some Kensington in yena velt , 200 miles north near some place called Boro Park.
He may end up in a Kensington in ek velt, but we should hope and pray that the Uber will not take him to yenner velt!!!

Gadolei yisroel (or their Agudah surrogates) have paskind that its “BORO” Park….in the newly published listing of charter bus routes to th Siyum on January 1st, there are not just one but two pick-up locations in Boro Park but none in Borough Park.
Originally it may have ended with o when it was an Italian neighborhood. But as it became more frum a gh was added. like…….

The people of BP spell it that way because they want it to be same amount of letters as בארא פארק
