As a Bochur, I find that there are fewer ways to prepare for shabbos, and make oneself really feel shabbos coming. I used to shave every Friday, and would play shabbos music for the few hours before shabbos. Unfortunately, I am currently in aveilus, so no music, and I can’t shave as regularly as I used to either. I go to the Mikva(or at least, try to), but what else can I do to make the approaching shabbos feel special? At home, I try to cook something for the meal, even just something small, but in yeshiva, when I go out for most meals, that becomes not as much of an option.

So, aside from learning gulches shabbos, and learning before shabbos(a very nice idea, I just like doing something bemaase for the shabbos, something different to what I do in the week), what could I do?

Sweep, clean, put everything in order. Slowly carefully and lovingly. Thinking all the time that you are preparing for a visit from the Queen. Perhaps while you are preparing, sing or hum Zmiros in your happiness excitement and anticipation.

Try to engage the cleaning not as a tircha and a duty, but as a privilege conferred upon you as the royal servant.

What can be better than learning…

    Do the Parshah.. in depdh..

Do Shir Hashirim.. do it slowly

Put emphasis into meaning.. you’ll have a real Oneg Shabbos, Gan Eden visiting you in this world!!

How about buying some bulk shabbos nosh and selling it to the other bochurim and send all or part of the profits to Tomchei Shabbos or some such organization. Hatzlacha and have a good shabbos!

Shir haShirim was my first thought.

I think my source said that it’s best to know Rashi’s commentary.
