BMG has banned cell phones with texting/Internet for bochurim.
{ka-ching}
Glad to see your CR boycott is over

October 5, 2011 7:45 pm at 7:45 pm #815633TheGoqParticipantAre smoke signals allowed?
October 5, 2011 7:48 pm at 7:48 pm #815634zahavasdadParticipantI was in lakewood a few weeks ago and I was talking to someone about eBooks . Kindle iPad etc
I asked him if any of the bochrim use them instead of actual seforim. Especially with the price of a ebook Gemorah costing 99 Cents. You can save alot of money by using an iPad or Kindle
October 5, 2011 7:49 pm at 7:49 pm #815635October 5, 2011 7:50 pm at 7:50 pm #815636bptParticipantAnd the penalty for non-compliance will be…?
October 5, 2011 7:52 pm at 7:52 pm #815637yitayningwutParticipantI am leaning to believe that this is not true, as I was there for first seder and did not hear anything of the sort.
zahavasdad-
I would buy a Kindle in a heartbeat if it supported Hebrew text and I knew how to load seforim on to it. And while it would definitely take time, maybe a few years, I think many others would too.
October 5, 2011 7:53 pm at 7:53 pm #815638amusedParticipantWhat took so long?? This should have happened years ago.
October 5, 2011 7:56 pm at 7:56 pm #815639popa_bar_abbaParticipantWhoa. Unbelievable.
Texting? Why texting? Why didn’t they just say internet?
October 5, 2011 8:01 pm at 8:01 pm #815640ChachamParticipantOnly for bachurim
October 5, 2011 8:02 pm at 8:02 pm #815641a maminParticipantKapusta: It says bucherim, they are single.
I hope it works. Maybe others will follow suit?
October 5, 2011 8:05 pm at 8:05 pm #815642JotharMemberMarrieds are allowed. Internet is banned as well.
{this post is being monetized}
October 5, 2011 8:06 pm at 8:06 pm #815643yitayningwutParticipantThis is true? There is a sign? Where???
October 5, 2011 8:08 pm at 8:08 pm #815644ToiParticipanti thought they were illegal in the first place…
October 5, 2011 8:09 pm at 8:09 pm #815645charlie brownMember{this post is being monetized} LOL!!!
Welcome back Jothar!
October 5, 2011 8:12 pm at 8:12 pm #815646charlie brownMemberyitayningwut,
they didn’t bother printing signs. To save costs, they texted the ban to all bochrim instead.
October 5, 2011 8:13 pm at 8:13 pm #815648yitayningwutParticipantI guess it would make sense that I didn’t see a sign being that I learn in Beis Aharon?? Or I was just araingetuhn??
charlie brown- Lol:)
October 5, 2011 8:14 pm at 8:14 pm #815649zahavasdadParticipantIt seems Hebrew is iffy on iPads and Kindles
There are PDF’s however of the Gemorah and Tanach’s that they will read
The eBooks on Amazon are PDF’s
I have a Siddur for my Android Phone that is just a siddur that was scanned in
October 5, 2011 8:18 pm at 8:18 pm #815650JotharMemberThx, Charlie…hataras nedarim finally passed…figured I would spend a bit of time here having fun and creating content to be monetized before getting back to cert studying…
{monetizable content above}
October 5, 2011 8:19 pm at 8:19 pm #815651charlie brownMemberyou’re the guy who was araingetuhn in Beis Aharon? Aha!
(just kidding)
October 5, 2011 8:21 pm at 8:21 pm #815652BYgirlNJMemberThere was a shmuz from R’ Mattisyahu last night, and this was announced. All bochurim will have a to sign a paper, stating that they don’t have texting and internet when they register for next zman (similar to signing the “freezer” paper) If they don’t sign- they are not registered in Yeshiva- meaning no bed and no seat.
October 5, 2011 8:27 pm at 8:27 pm #815653yitayningwutParticipantI’m waiting till I can load the entire ????????? on to it. And HebrewBooks too, and I know those are PDFs but I really still need Hebrew text. When it happens it will be amazing though.
October 5, 2011 8:47 pm at 8:47 pm #815654charlie brownMemberJothar,
so you were itching to get back here the whole time but controlled yourself till hataras nedarim? Very impressive. That shtickel mussar is takeh worthy of monetization.
speaking of which, where’s bombmaniac? Haven’t seen him here lately.
October 5, 2011 9:02 pm at 9:02 pm #815655JotharMemberCharlie, I wouldn’t say “itching to post”, as this place is bittul zman that takes away from my cert studying.
As for BMG bochurim- I have a solution: get a kosher phone AND a 3G tablet, which can have internet and a texting app, and technically doesn’t violate the letter as it’s not a phone! Koach deheteira adif indeed!
{Monetizable content above}
October 5, 2011 9:26 pm at 9:26 pm #815656yitayningwutParticipantCharlie – lol 😉 Keinaina Hara there are lots of guys araingetuhn in Beis Aharon.
Chacham – Welcome back. Did you end up finding a good place this zman?
October 5, 2011 9:52 pm at 9:52 pm #815657bptParticipant“(similar to signing the “freezer” paper)”
Uh huh. And just like the “freezer” if you are dating someone before you get there, the freezer rule is suspended.
And if you are truly fresh, the freezer is only for 90 days.
So, like most “rules”, this one seems to lack teeth.
Want to know when BMG (or any other place) is taking cell phone bans seriously? When walking into shul / the bais with one will get the same reaction that walking into shul / the bais in a bathing suit will get.
That’s because the ban against bathing suits in shul / the bais is taken seriously, because we know where we stand on the issue.
And the ban against cell phones? We are still not sure where we stand on the issue
October 5, 2011 9:53 pm at 9:53 pm #815658yitayningwutParticipantLol Jothar great idea
October 5, 2011 10:01 pm at 10:01 pm #815659charlie brownMemberyitayningwut,
I know that – that’s why I wrote just kidding. I didn’t want to be perceived as one of those people who have never set foot in a BMG bais medrash and yet have the chutzpah to claim that everyone in lakewood sits in the coffee room all day instead of learning.
jothar,
of course its bitul zman but we’re talking about an addiction here. 🙂
October 5, 2011 10:16 pm at 10:16 pm #815660NechomahParticipantKosher phones in EY do not have internet or SMS (which I assume is texting).

None of the shuls that I frequent have signs posted regarding bathing suits (but one of them has a sign that the sliach tzibur must wear socks).
I think shuls should install cell phone jammers (as long as they can get FCC approval).
October 6, 2011 2:23 am at 2:23 am #815662amusedParticipantCell phone jammers are illegal in the US.
October 6, 2011 5:22 am at 5:22 am #815663bezalelParticipantThere’s always the Faraday cage option.
October 6, 2011 1:21 pm at 1:21 pm #815664apushatayidParticipantWhy does the average bachur in BMG (or any yeshiva for that matter) need a cell phone, even without texting capability?
October 6, 2011 1:46 pm at 1:46 pm #815665zahavasdadParticipantWhy does the average bachur in BMG (or any yeshiva for that matter) need a cell phone, even without texting capability?
There is a High School in Manhattan called Stuyvesant High School it is right by the World Trade Center. They banned Cell Phones, but some kids secretly had them
When 9/11 occured parents were frantic to know about their kids because its so close to the WTC. Those that had clandestine Cell phones were able to call their parents and also let friends use their phones to call their parents.
The school has since changed the policy and allowed kids to keep cell phones, but must turn them off

??? What?
Why does you need a cell phone?
October 6, 2011 2:32 pm at 2:32 pm #815667YW Moderator-80Memberyes, why does you?
October 6, 2011 2:39 pm at 2:39 pm #815668zahavasdadParticipantWhy does you need a cell phone?
I dont need a cell phone
Everyone who wants to bother me like my wife and mother-in-law needs me to have a cell phone, I could live without it
October 6, 2011 2:40 pm at 2:40 pm #815669YW Moderator-80MemberI dont need a cell phone
i believe the correct grammar would be:
“i doesnt need a cell phone”
October 6, 2011 2:45 pm at 2:45 pm #815670zahavasdadParticipant“i doesnt need a cell phone”
Oh you got me
Thats how we talk with my hommies in the hood
October 6, 2011 2:56 pm at 2:56 pm #815671yungerman1ParticipantCan those engaged get text to be able to text their kallahs all day?
October 6, 2011 4:41 pm at 4:41 pm #815672apushatayidParticipantSo, why does the average yeshiva bachur need a cell phone?
October 6, 2011 4:41 pm at 4:41 pm #815673apushatayidParticipantI thought one rapped with the homies, but never talked with them. Live and learn.
October 6, 2011 6:06 pm at 6:06 pm #815674yitayningwutParticipantI searched Beis Aharon for a sign today and did not see one. So, if there is indeed such a new rule, I am not responsible.
October 6, 2011 6:09 pm at 6:09 pm #815675Dr. SeussMemberCheck the coffee room.

October 6, 2011 6:40 pm at 6:40 pm #815677real-briskerMemberadorable – It’s easy for you to talk.
October 6, 2011 7:04 pm at 7:04 pm #815678adorableParticipantI dont text so…..
October 6, 2011 7:05 pm at 7:05 pm #815679adorableParticipantand no its not easy but I took it off at a time when lots of my friends were doing it too and now even though some of them now have texting I am proud to say that i stuck it out until now and I will continue to TALK TO PEOPLE!!!!!!
October 6, 2011 7:28 pm at 7:28 pm #815680m in IsraelMemberzehavasdad — Sorry, but that’s an “urban legend”. Stuyvesant is technically part of the NYC public school system, and subject to the same Chancellor’s Regualation A-412 as all NYC public schools. Students are still not allowed to bring cell phones to school, and if a student is found with a cell phone it may be confiscated and returned only to their parent or guardian. (You can see this information on their own website as well as on the NYC DOE website.)
October 6, 2011 7:52 pm at 7:52 pm #815681bptParticipant“(but one of them has a sign that the sliach tzibur must wear socks).”
I saw a sign like this, where it stated socks are mandatory. It was in a bungalow colony shul.
The only other place I saw a “dress code” sign Chust was one that said a gartel is a must for the omud. (Crowd compliance is optional)
October 9, 2011 4:33 am at 4:33 am #815682yehudayonaParticipantTexting is addictive for many people, so the ban is understandable. My daughter goes to a seminary in Israel that only allows kosher phones, but they made an exception for her and allowed texting because she’s deaf. I wonder if BMG would make a similar exception for a deaf bochur.
