What constitutes a Kehilla? Must every frum Jew be a member of a Kehilla, or could someone be a member of no Kehilla whatsoever?

When you are a member of a certain Kehilla, what are your obligations as such? Must you adhere to all of that Kehilla’s minhagim?

Can a person leave or join a different Kehilla? How? Does there need to be a valid justification for leaving?

And can you be a member of multiple Kehillos, simultaneously? What if there is a conflict in minhagim between them?

First, define “kehilla.” Is it based on geographic placement? Socialogical self-identification?

If I live in Boro Park next to a Satmar shul, does that make me a part of the Satmar kehilla, even if I self-identify with a different hashkafah? What if I don’t self-identify with any particular movement?

Please define “kehilla” before we go any further with this conversation?

In Europe before the war, you were a member of the kehila of the town you lived in.

I’m sorry… perhaps I wasn’t really clear. I was asking for the definition of a kehilla today, primarily as it applies to an urban place with a mixed populace.

The only kehillah I’m part of, to the best of my knowledge, is Kehillas _____ ______, my shul. I mean, my dad pays the dues, so I guess I’m in the kehillah.

I think you’re in the kehillah you identify with. Like if you’re in the KAJ yekke kehillah, or a Chassidish kehillah. My family, except for our shul membership, is pretty nondenominational. I think a lot of litvaks are (though we’re not litvaks), unless their yeshiva has a kehillah, lke Brisk.

But then again, I’m a snot-nosed kid, so don’t listen to me.

(I’m bitter. Someone just called me that.)

The way “Postal” is addressing his question, it sounds like he is a Misnaged, so may I refer him to the one & only Misnaged Kehilla in the tri-state area:- KAJ = K’Hal Adath Jeshurun

Kehilla is an institution which offers you their services “from cradle to grave” including nursery, kindergarten, pre school, high school, Beis-Medrash, Kollel, Chevra Kadisha, Kashrus, constant availibity of Rabbonim, + a lot more.

http://www.kajinc.org/ ………. How about reviewing the website of KAJ and coming to visit KAJ, and become part of a very vibrant Kehilla.

147: The Litvish don’t have any kehilos in NY?

“In Europe before the war, you were a member of the kehila of the town you lived in.”

    Correction:

“In Europe before the war or in Gateshead after the war, you are/were a member of the kehila of the town you live/d in.”

Gateshead has probably one of the strongest official kehilla structures in the world.

But getting back to Heshi’s issue, the backbones of Gateshead are Yekkish & not Litvish [in addition to the current Gateshead Rov being a Yekke, as were most of his predecessrs], so my advice to you Heshi:-

How about amassing some Litvacs together, and commecing your own Kehilla. This would be a wonderful Chessed to your fellow bereft Litvacs who are ardently yearning for a Kehilla. ….. Bemokom She’Ein Ish:- Guess what? Hishtadel LiHeyos ish.

No– it’s the name of my shul, which I will not post because people may figure out who I am (it’s not that big). It’s just the only kehillah I’ve ever been part of, even if only by name.
