May 11, 2010 6:01 pm at 6:01 pm #1228900smartcookieMemberHey this thread almost fell off the page. Some more entertaining stories please??
May 11, 2010 10:05 pm at 10:05 pm #1228901Mommy613MemberOk, if you boys dont stop, then the moderators should please turn off this thread. Really, with a name like yeshiva world, I expected better. Pranks are a reason we keep our children out of public schools and are not positive things. Sorry to be a spoilsport but would the moderators please close this thread. Sorry.
May 11, 2010 10:12 pm at 10:12 pm #1228902YW Moderator-80MemberPranks are not only not “positive things”, they are assur.
Nevertheless no one here is encouraging or condoning pranks. They are only describing pranks that have occurred. A number of Gedolim (as children) and even Tannaim have done pranks. R’ Elazar ben R’ Shimon once put a neighbors cow on top of his roof.
May 11, 2010 10:13 pm at 10:13 pm #1228903smartcookieMemberMommy 613- sorry to disapoint you, but don’t think for a minute that your kids are never involved in pranks.
School pranks don’t mean chutzpah. Sometimes they can be cute and done to the right teacher that enjoys them.
Sometimes they are performed purim time when teachers specifically give permission.
Whatever the case is, students definitely need to be careful with chutzpah but sometimes pranks are cute and really not minded by the teachers.
May 11, 2010 10:26 pm at 10:26 pm #1228904Mommy613MemberI’m sorry to argue here but in the gemara, tanaim stories are written to teach lessons. You may call it “describing’ here but those on this thread are elaborating on and enjoying reminicing over pranks they commited. To allow this thread to continue is doing an aveira and then showing off what you did. pranks aren’t something to be proud of or tell over. They are forms childhood immaturity that you should be ashamed to have done. If you don’t agree with me ask the rabbinic authority who i’m sure is at your office. I’m very sorry , but if we are honest with ourselves, we can see the clear issue with this thread.
And smart cookie, not saying that i know of any pranks any of my children have ch’v committed, but if they do misbehave, don’t you think i disagree with their actions?!
May 11, 2010 10:37 pm at 10:37 pm #1228905YW Moderator-80Membertanaim stories are written to teach lessons
just checking, by Tanaaim “stories” being “written” you mean events being recorded, not made up stories, right?

Apparently the maggid shiur even cracked a smile.it probaly only worked cuz they were that type of class and everyone knew it.
May 12, 2010 12:36 am at 12:36 am #1228910Uri in JerusalemParticipant– We had a non-Jewish teacher, Mr Hamann, who taught us the Afrikaans language in South Africa. When ever we misbehaved he treatened to hang us from the lightbulb. As he taught in a Jewish school he knew a bit about the Jews. On ta’anit Ester we told him “Sorry Sir, tomorrow will need to hang you from the lightbulb”. He replied instantaneously “No, you are mistaken, my name is spelt with 2 N’s at the end !”
– A student in our class had a brother in medical school. One day his brother gave him a life size dummy & dressed him up in school clothes & told the teachers that the new student’s name is Mordechai. This created many funny events. The school was constructed with 2 two story buildings facing each other. Our classroom was on the 2nd floor of one building & the tuckshop was on the ground floor of the other building. Young mothers usually served in the tuckshop. During the break, we hung Mordechai over the 2nd floor railing, held his feet & started shaking him upside down. The young mothers who saw this started screaming hystericaly. Eventually the weight of the torso was too much & Mordechai split in half, his head & body falling to the ground & we were left holding his feet.
– Our class did other really funny things but I think it made a chilul Hashem & so I am embaressed to mention them.
May 12, 2010 3:25 pm at 3:25 pm #1228911Dr. PepperParticipantMommy613-
There are two very different types of pranks- harmless ones that cause no damage (hiding a piece of chalk in the eraser) and pranks that cause a loss (ordering pizza to a teacher in middle of the night).
The way Yeshivas are designed (for the most part) is to give the bochurim very little free time since the less time they have to be bored the better. There has to be some sort of outlet for them to release the energy that teen boys build up during the day.
There is no justification to pranks that cause damage.
Before I started teaching my father gave me some advice.
“Every Jewish boy belongs in yeshiva (although not every Jewish boy is necessarily in the correct yeshiva for him), not every Jewish man belongs in chinuch. As a teacher you have to be able to handle whatever pranks are aimed at you and not give punishments out of anger. If not, you do not belong in chinuch.
Just like a neurosurgeon, who has the life of his patients in his hands, can only perform an operation that is beneficial solely for the patient, how much more so a mechanech, who holds the future of his student and all future generations, can only give a punishment that is appropriate and beneficial.”
As a teacher I was definitely the subject of many pranks, the vast majority of those being harmless.
Seeing them score (as a whole) over the 90th percentile on standardized exams, and the relationship I still keep with some of them as they study for their professional exams makes it worth it in the long run.

Of course, although “everyone” is probably acceptable, “anyone” would be more proper.
But that’s my last correction 😉

we used to do all the regular stuff girls do in class like shaving cream instead of chalk, changing all our names when we had a sub..
one time during the month of adar we all got weird hats and put it on then one girl took advantage that the hat covers her ears so she was listening to music throughout the lesson. near to the end of class she started screaming to a girl about the teacher teaching us.. i think she learnt her lesson!!
May 13, 2010 4:17 pm at 4:17 pm #1228936Dr. PepperParticipantThis is a counter prank I did as a teacher on a student who tried to prank me.
A different student had a hard time staying in his seat the whole class. I asked what it will take him to stay in his seat for 45 minutes straight. He made me a deal that I have to memorize the first hundred digits of pi (and write it on the board in front of the whole class) if he stays put for one whole class.
Sure enough, a few weeks later he some how stayed put for an entire class. After class he announced that during the next class I will be writing the first hundred digits of pi on the board from memorization.
Of course I knew what at least one wise guy was going to do and I had to come up with a plan for a counter attack.
Before class I found two different text books that had the first few hundred digits of pi and copied those pages for the class. At the end of class I wrote the 100 digits on the board and I heard some whispering that most of the numbers were wrong. Then I gave out the photocopies so that everyone can see that the numbers were correct.
“But Mr. Pepper”, one student chimed, “the last 80 numbers are different from the numbers on the paper that Heshy gave out”!
“Well”, I said, “Let’s ask Heshy how he calculated the numbers, he must have used an approximation method that is only valid for the first 20 decimal spots or so”.
Heshy admitted that he tried to prank me by giving everyone the fake numbers so it will look like I made it up.
As I was erasing the board and dismissing the class I announced with a straight face that “as always, anything I write on the board, whether it is in the book or not, is fair material for a test”.

May 16, 2010 11:43 pm at 11:43 pm #1228939RebTeacherMemberI read the whole thread. I am a teacher in a chassidishe yeshiva, and i hardly have to deal with such dangerous pranks. OH, that’s because my kids are 10 years old.
But I loved the line about grammer, around 15 posts ago. LOL!
Keep us updated with the exciting stories. It makes me feel good about the little pranks I have to put up with.
Dr. Pepper, did you also have a horrible first year as a teacher? Because I’m getting sprayed up with massive waterguns here. Gimme some love here.
May 20, 2010 3:43 am at 3:43 am #1228940bored123ParticipantYM Moderator – i don’t remember which one – but the one that wrote about logmein – that wouldn’t work because when you log in remotely, the computer comes up with a sign that says this computer is being controlled remotely..but we’v definitely had some fun in computer lessons for example using autocorrect, we set the computer to autocorrect “i” to “i stink” or something like that on a few computers and most people for some reason don’t realise that it could be something as simple as autocorrect that was making the computer do that and it was really amusing watching them try and type out their work…….
May 21, 2010 4:20 am at 4:20 am #1228941HIEParticipantpeerimsameach, so which city is your yeshiva in?
May 21, 2010 4:58 pm at 4:58 pm #1228942Dr. PepperParticipantThere was this guy in Bais Medrash who was tall, friendly and charismatic. Whenever a new guy would come for a faher or to visit he would personally welcome them and help them get settled.
He also had a shticky side to him and wouldn’t hesitate to use it on a new guy who he felt could handle it.
So, this new guy comes, gets his royal welcome and the person introduces him to the Rosh Hayeshiva who asked him to stop by after Maariv.
After Maariv this guy went over to the new guy to ask him if there is anything else he could help him with. They shmoozed for two minutes until the new guy looks up and says, “Oh no, I was supposed to meet the Rosh Hayeshiva after Maariv and I don’t know where he went!”.
“Don’t worry”, the other guy reassures him, “I’ll show you where he went.” He walks him out of the Bais Medrash and pointing to the Rosh Hayeshivas office says, “he went into here”.
The new guy nervously knocks on the door and the other guys jaw drops, “That’s the bathroom!” he says with a dead serious face.
The new guys face turns bright red and he stammers “I assumed it was his office”. In the meantime a voice from inside says “come in”. The new guy almost faints.
May 25, 2010 4:16 pm at 4:16 pm #1228943smartcookieMemberOne one particular boring day in school we decided to play a a prank on our math teacher.
We each took our big textbook and pushed the cover into the dropceiling, each girl above her desk. The book was hangaing down from the ceiling with the cover holding it in place.
When the teacher walked in, we each stood straight at the left side of our desks and neat rows of books hanging above our heads. It was some sight.
May 25, 2010 4:40 pm at 4:40 pm #1228944Dr. PepperParticipantI did this on a friend of mine.
We each had to write a story and read it to the class.
One guy, who although he was very popular, had horrible stage freight and I knew from previous episodes that he would hold the paper up to his nose and read word for word.
His story was about a family trip to a relative in Boston and in it he also mentioned that they toured the USS Constellation.
I secretly changed the USS Constellation to the USS Constipation to see if he would read it anyway.
He only realised afterwards what he said but he did get a kick out of it.
