One of our boys will be visiting his cousin who lives in midtown Manhattan. I have heard stories of bedbug infestations all over NYC, and was wondering what steps you may be taking to prevent them.
Should we throw all his clothes in the dryer for 20 minutes when he returns? Or should we just burn them? What do we do with the suitcase?
Seriously, though – what is the general wisdom about keeping bedbugs at bay?

Before you go to ANY hotel make sure it is cleared by the bed bug registry.

Is the problem just with hotels? I am aware of that aspect. I was wondering about the cousin’s little closet-of-an-apartment. Any danger there?
December 20, 2010 8:10 pm at 8:10 pm #719005SacrilegeMemberOn the bed bug registry you can type in any address and see if it had a problem with bed bugs… Maybe try that.
Hotels are definitely NOT the only places in the city that had a problem, The DA’s office, Niketown, Time Square Movie Theatre… so they definitely arent ONLY in hotels. Be careful, but dont go crazy.
December 20, 2010 8:20 pm at 8:20 pm #719006ronrsrMemberdear Sacrilege, thank you for that informative answer.
Now, let’s say you have visited the infested DA’s office and you are on your way home. What do you do before going inside to lower the probability that you are carrying a few families of bedbugs in your garments?
December 20, 2010 8:32 pm at 8:32 pm #719007RuffRuffMemberHow’s about gamma ray treatment?
December 20, 2010 8:37 pm at 8:37 pm #719008SacrilegeMember(Do your own research just in case, I am not 100% on all the details)
Since bed bugs dont fly or jump, I would ASSUME (verify, please) that you would have to come in DIRECT contact with them to become a carrier. So for example, if you go in to the DA’s office and you dont lean on a wall, dont sit on a chair… I dont see how you can get them.
If you go to a Hotel and you SEE bed bugs crawling up the walls/under the mattress… They WILL pay for ALL your cleaning. If it wasnt in a Hotel quickly launder all your clothes (probably best to not do it in your home, just sayin…) and avoid carpeted areas until you are 1000% sure you are bed bug free.
December 20, 2010 8:53 pm at 8:53 pm #719009Peanut ButterMemberWow, there really is a bedbug registry! You can also bring a mattress cover if you go to a hotel, though that wont help you if they are hidden elsewhere, and climb up the bed while you are sleeping.
December 20, 2010 9:11 pm at 9:11 pm #719010Derech HaMelechMemberI would tell them that with all the talk about bedbugs, they’ve not actually done anything productive with themselves. People aren’t impressed with bedbugs and very very few people would even consider spending any sort of quality time with them. You know, nothing to get too depressed about but enough to seriously discourage them.
I might also mention how there’s an industry specific to killing them but I’d worry it might be too fatalistic.
