November 22, 2010 12:59 pm at 12:59 pm #711352HelpfulMemberA set of Mishna Berura.
November 22, 2010 1:48 pm at 1:48 pm #711353real-briskerMembersaftala – The title states Bat, and the post says Bar. Which one are you talking about?
November 22, 2010 2:05 pm at 2:05 pm #711354Pashuteh YidMemberBrisker, why are you asking kashas? There is a diffent thread for that.
November 22, 2010 2:26 pm at 2:26 pm #711355Mosh3Memberdepending on the person, some boys want seforim and some boys want a good novel like feldheim puts out and this way you dont have to spend alot of money
November 22, 2010 4:07 pm at 4:07 pm #711356PosterMemberHey – feldheim has a sale now, buy 2 get one free!!
November 22, 2010 4:23 pm at 4:23 pm #711357real-briskerMemberpashuteh yid – Im not sure what youre talking about, this thread is titled “bat”
November 22, 2010 4:26 pm at 4:26 pm #711358yeshivaguy1Participant$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
November 22, 2010 5:00 pm at 5:00 pm #711359oomisParticipantA baseball set (you did say “Bat” mitzvah, didn’t you?)
To be serious, though, I think a personal leather bound Tehillim with her name engraved on the cover, is a nice gift, as is some type of not too ornate jewelry (bracelet, pendantm earrings). Mishnah Berurah – IMO, no.
You need to know the kid, though. Maybe her bank account could use some help, if you are a clsoe relative. Or, barring all of these, a nice gift certificate to either a store she frequents, or to a Judaica store.

Go to the larger Judaica websites (eichlers, nehora…) and see what they have under the Bar/Bat mitzvah gift tab. Can’t go wrong with an inspiring book in my opinion unless the kid is really frum and doesn’t need it in that case ask the kid what they want, if that’s not possible maybe ask the parents of the child, if that’s also not possible just get a gift card to either a Judaica, toy store or clothing store (that the kid would appreciate!).
November 22, 2010 5:23 pm at 5:23 pm #711361MiriamMemberSorry about that guys……..Bar-Mitzvah gifts is the question..but if anyone wants to suggest a Bat Mitzvah gift, that would be great.
November 23, 2010 3:17 am at 3:17 am #711362apushatayidParticipantBar Mitzvah gift most appreciated by my boys (after money) was gift certificate to any seforim/judaica store.
Bat Mitzvah gift recently given to a neice by several uncles and aunts who chipped in. A new MP3/4 player loaded with 7 CDs of new music purchased for her and loaded onto the player.
November 23, 2010 4:05 am at 4:05 am #711363popa_bar_abbaParticipantDon’t give seforim. I got piles of seforim, but even the ones which we learn in yeshiva, were outdated and worthless (Meaning, old print).
Give money. Or booze.
November 23, 2010 5:00 am at 5:00 am #711364real-briskerMemberpba – why not seforim? What are you supposed to learn from?
November 23, 2010 5:48 am at 5:48 am #711365WIYMembersaftala
Give a gift card/certificate to a Judaica store. Let him pick the seforim, or music cds he wants. When I was Bar Mitzvad I got seforim and as Popa said many were old prints or seforim I have no real use for. Additionally I got a few doubles and it was just plain annoying.
November 23, 2010 10:11 am at 10:11 am #711366apushatayidParticipantWhy not seforim?
Do you agree you would prefer a nice $70 set of mishne brurah to learn from instead of 3 hard to read $30 sets?
Nobody is suggesting you buy a gift you can’t afford, but let the boy buy what he wants or needs. My son turned 2 mishne brurahs, 2 pnei yehoshuas a ritva and a ketzos into an esrog box and menorah. Go with the gift certificate.
November 23, 2010 12:28 pm at 12:28 pm #711367minyan galMemberAren’t you supposed to give cuff links or a fountain pen?? Oops, my mistake – I am thinking of the wrong decade. I doubt that a teenaged boy today would even know what cuff links or a fountain are.
November 23, 2010 1:09 pm at 1:09 pm #711368SJSinNYCMemberWe got my cousin a digital camera. It was a $150 camera that we bought for $30 (it was a cyber monday deal).
November 23, 2010 1:47 pm at 1:47 pm #711369real-briskerMemberapusethyid – The point is give something that is readable, not give nothing!
November 23, 2010 2:53 pm at 2:53 pm #711370deiyezoogerMembergift cetificate does sound the best but if you want to get him/her what they want and will appreciate, the best bet is ask them,or better yet take them along to the store they want and tell them before they start looking and things, your price range.
November 23, 2010 3:53 pm at 3:53 pm #711371Pashuteh YidMemberI would not get any music player that has video capabilities. You may be ruining him for life.
