March 22, 2011 2:22 am at 2:22 am #753138GrandmasterMemberWhat’s A1C?
March 22, 2011 2:27 am at 2:27 am #753139metrodriverMemberfedup11210; Is it good, bad. Low or high. What is the significance. Please enlighten us, who are not medically versed. (I certainly am not. Or I would have “Medic” in my posting name.)
March 22, 2011 2:57 am at 2:57 am #753140YatzmichMemberFedup,
Wow! That is really good. It’s something I could only hope for at this point. 3 weeks ago mine was literaly off the charts, it was so high that the machine didn’t even register it.
But don’t worry, I’m working on it really shtark.
March 22, 2011 3:14 am at 3:14 am #753141cofeefanMemberfedup- thats AMAZING BEYOND WORDS!!! WAY TO GO!! i know how hard that could be (i finally got mine to 6.6!) you should be proud! why dont you join our diabetes support group thread?!?
March 22, 2011 3:20 am at 3:20 am #753142HealthParticipantfedup11210 – I posted this months ago under Diabetes Support Group -“it should be ideally <6. This will be very difficult to attain.”
Keep trying!
March 22, 2011 3:41 am at 3:41 am #753143allsgr8Participantfedup2010- WOW! congrats! Keep it up( or shall I say down ?:)
How about joining the Diabetes support group?

Conventionally that is true; however, how can you direct this personally towards fedup11210, without knowing his personal medical history?
March 23, 2011 12:48 am at 12:48 am #753145YatzmichMemberAvram,
Yours should be the same, as should everybody’s.
March 23, 2011 1:07 am at 1:07 am #753146cofeefanMemberhealth- it should be under 6 for NON DIABETICS…… for diabetics it should be under 7. of course the lower the better but in the 6s is what is good for diabetics
March 23, 2011 1:23 am at 1:23 am #753147fedup11210MemberA1C is an average of ur blood glucose level over the last 3 months. im type 1. n my dr said it should be btwn 6.5 n 7 so its fine (lowest its been in years) n if i find ur support group thread ill join
March 23, 2011 4:27 am at 4:27 am #753148cofeefanMemberour thread is active just look for it!hope u come on by and share with the rest of us type 1 Diabetics there =)
March 23, 2011 6:08 am at 6:08 am #753149HealthParticipantCF – Go to page 4 in the diabetes support group topic and see what I wrote from JHU.
The American College of Endocrinology (ACE) and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) adopted a target A1C of <6.5% at their diabetes treatment consensus conference in 2001.
The target from the ADA, (what you are quoting) is very confusing.
Should be below 7, but really below 6 in certain pts.
The ACE is straight forward.
March 23, 2011 10:51 am at 10:51 am #753150apushatayidParticipantFedup: Congrats. Amazing. Mazal Tov. Keep it up. Labriut.
March 23, 2011 1:51 pm at 1:51 pm #753151cofeefanMemberthe target i am quoting is straight from my endo who i have been using for 5+ years who is a TOP doctor and says that my A1C of 6.6 is perfect so forgive me if i skip all the reading and just listen to my doc.
im not saying ur wrong u ARE right, the lower the A1C the better but when we are struggling with diabetes to get o the 6.6 or 6.7 in fedups case, let us relish in our success instead of saying it should be ideally <6. This will be very difficult to attain.” Keep trying!
just what i am feeling

March 23, 2011 5:52 pm at 5:52 pm #753153HealthParticipantCF -Thanks for sharing, but I’m not a shrink, I’m in medicine. Your Doc is just going by the ADA, but there are other groups who disagree.
March 23, 2011 6:03 pm at 6:03 pm #753154allsgr8Participanthealth- it would be almost impossible for someone with diabetes to have an A1c of less than 6 without having too many lows for long amounts of time.
btw I have always been curious as to what kind of medicine you practice..care to share?
March 23, 2011 10:49 pm at 10:49 pm #753155cofeefanMemberhealth- i could see y ur not a shrink…. and yes i agree with allsgr- having an A1C of under 6 means the AVERAGE blood sugar is around 95 which means that there would be a lot of lows. and like Allsgr8 asked- what kind of medicine do you practice that you know so much about diabetes?
March 24, 2011 1:11 am at 1:11 am #753156HealthParticipantallsgr8 & CF- We actually had this convo in the diabetes support group topic. I’d rather not rehash.
But you should look into the research of optimal health for diabetics.
A lot of authorities hold you aren’t hypoglycemic until you’re <50 mg/dl BG. So You can have a lower A1c. Esp. look into Johns Hopkins research on A1c levels.
March 24, 2011 2:04 am at 2:04 am #753158HealthParticipantCF – Noone said it was easy to keep the BG down. But I say it the way it is -not to put you down, but for your own benefit. You are still young (and the others who post here) -so you live in the here and now, but one day you won’t be so young anymore. I’ve seen the complications of diabetes on people and it’s not pretty. Like they say -An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
March 24, 2011 2:12 am at 2:12 am #753159allsgr8Participanthealth- I dont know who holds that your not hypoglycemic until less than 50 but one thing is for sure: they have never experienced low blood sugar!! 50 is close enough to passing out!
March 24, 2011 2:17 am at 2:17 am #753160HealthParticipantAllsgr8 – Obviously if you feel ill, you must raise your BG. But not everyone will feel it till <50.
“I dont know who holds that your not hypoglycemic until less than 50”
Research it -you are in the medical field. BTW, this is the consensus.
March 24, 2011 2:25 am at 2:25 am #753161allsgr8ParticipantNon of my professors ever taught me that!! When I get a chance ill look it up iyh though.
If you find me one person who doesnt feel hypoglycemic at 50 we can talk until then I doubt I’ll believe any research
March 24, 2011 2:55 am at 2:55 am #753162fedup11210Memberthnx everybody! (nxt time ill post in da diabetes thread)
March 24, 2011 3:29 am at 3:29 am #753163cofeefanMember“You are still young (and the others who post here) -so you live in the here and now,”
i happen not to live in the here and now i am a HUGE worryer so i know all the bad things that could happen which is why i am so controlled. but i hear what you are saying so i guess thanks for trying to help.
as far as you saying most people dont feel it till its in the fiftys, thats not true (for me at least…) i can tell the second it drops down to lower than 75 and it gets worse the lower it is (if i wake up at night feeling shaky, i can always tell how low it is jst by feeling and 90% of the time i am right… i think thats so cool lol) every person is different but i think most diabetics will agree with me when i say we always know when were low before the under 50 mark. 50 is DANGEROUSLY low!!! as someone in the medical feild you prob know that
March 24, 2011 3:39 am at 3:39 am #753164HealthParticipant“Non of my professors ever taught me that!!”
I wonder -why not? I’m not sure if I learned it in school either. A lot of my teachers weren’t too good. But look in your books.
March 24, 2011 3:48 am at 3:48 am #753165HealthParticipantCF -“but i think most diabetics will agree with me when i say we always know when were low before the under 50 mark.”
You might feel it, but most don’t treat till it’s <50.
I don’t understand why you feel you have to walk around with a BG of 50 to achieve lower A1c’s. If you avg. a BG of 60 that’s equal to 5% A1c. 6% will equal to an avg. of 90 BG -this is very attainable.
March 24, 2011 4:02 am at 4:02 am #753166cofeefanMemberwho says i dont treat low blood sugars?!?! i do! i know its sooooo dangerous!!! i lowered my A1c the “old fashion way” diet exercise and monitoring. while you might not think 6.6 is good i am proud of it and i will continue to work hard. and btw please dont say keeping an avg bg of 90 is very attainable cuz its really not! like i said you dont know (and hopefully never should…) a lot goes into it and its not something that will go away so i am doing the best i can! i am healthy and strong and i thank Hashem every day for helping me get to the 6.6 and thats all i am gonna say abt the matter! have a great night!
March 24, 2011 4:26 am at 4:26 am #753167HealthParticipant“who says i dont treat low blood sugars?!?!”
I never said you didn’t. My point is you don’t have to walk around with that low BG to get a lower A1c. An A1c around 6% is great.
March 24, 2011 3:15 pm at 3:15 pm #753168Mother in IsraelMemberHealth, I think a little sensitivity would be in order here. It’s obvious that for the OP, this is a big accomplishment. To say “Keep trying” in such a situation is really uncalled for. I understand that you’re not a shrink, but if you’re going to be practicing medicine in real life, it wouldn’t hurt to know how to speak to people with a little more thoughtfulness. If a 250-lb. female patient is told to lose weight and she successfully brings her weight down to 180 lbs., will you praise her for it or will you say, “Well, you really should only weight 140. Keep trying!” Even if she should be encouraged to lose more, it would be very rude and discouraging not to praise her for what she has already accomplished.
March 24, 2011 3:58 pm at 3:58 pm #753169cofeefanMemberthank you Mother thats EXACTLY what im feeling!!! well said!
March 24, 2011 4:56 pm at 4:56 pm #753170HealthParticipantMiI – “Well, you really should only weight 140. Keep trying!”
I’d probably say -Good job, but you really should only weigh 140. Keep trying!
That’s when I’m getting paid to have a nice bedside manner.
I’m just here to teach the proper way to maintain the poster’s Health. I find a lot of people just want someone to have a nice bedside manner, but they don’t really want them to tell them how to improve their health!
March 24, 2011 6:13 pm at 6:13 pm #753171forever1MemberCongrats on ur a1c!!
I do agree with health on this. While a a1c of 6.7 is good, she mustve worked very hard to achieve it, our goal is to try to have control as close to normal as possible. An a1c of under 5 is definitely possible, it does require a lot of diligent work but is absolutely achievable. I know of a couple of types 1 who have their number in that range.
Cf, ur doc recommends a higher a1c since she’s pediatric, when dealing with kids the endos tend to be a bit more careful with lows.
That being said, i think that some ppl tend to have better a1c than others even with the same control, I wonder if there is more to it.
March 24, 2011 7:33 pm at 7:33 pm #753172Mother in IsraelMember“I find a lot of people just want someone to have a nice bedside manner, but they don’t really want them to tell them how to improve their health!”
I don’t think there has to be a contradiction between good beside manner and improving health. Sometimes a slight change in wording can give the same message but leave the patient feeling positive and motivated to keep working. If instead of saying, “Good job, but you really should only weigh 140. Keep trying!” you would say, “Great job! I bet if you continue this way, you’ll soon reach your goal weight of 140 lbs.”, the patient would be a lot happier and be much more motivated to keep trying. If I were the patient and you told it to me your way, I would probably say “Why bother–all my hard work and he’s still not happy with me.” Bedside manner is a lot like parenting in that sense.
March 25, 2011 1:47 am at 1:47 am #753173HealthParticipantMiI – Technically you’re right, but I & others don’t have the time and energy for good bedside manners. Unfortunately it isn’t a perfect world. There are definitely some practioners who have good beside manners, but by and far, with the exception of a VERY few, I’ve found them to be very incompetent! So choose your poison – bad manners or bad medicine!
March 25, 2011 1:57 am at 1:57 am #753174Mother in IsraelMemberActually, after years of dealing with serious illness and more specialists than I can count on my fingers, I can tell you that the majority of doctors I’ve been in contact with do have good bedside manner and know how to speak to patients. And we’ve had some pretty fantastic doctors. I can also tell you that the ones that don’t have good beside manners tend to lose their patients pretty quickly. I don’t think any poison has to be chosen here. Besides, the OP here is not a patient of yours and in a forum like this, sensitivity is always in place.
March 25, 2011 3:08 am at 3:08 am #753175HealthParticipantMiI – Like you said -you dealt with specialists mostly. They have time to make small talk. Having a good bedside is part of their job.
“I can also tell you that the ones that don’t have good beside manners tend to lose their patients pretty quickly.”
This is with the specialists. I was talking about PCP’s. They have way too many patients and most don’t have good bedside manners.
March 25, 2011 4:58 am at 4:58 am #753176Mother in IsraelMemberThat hasn’t been my experience, but one case doth not a study make, so I won’t argue with you on that one. I will repeat though that you are not the OP’s PCP, so sensitivity would be expected on this forum.
March 25, 2011 12:41 pm at 12:41 pm #753177YW Moderator-72Participanthealth – I think it is time that you state clearly your medical credentials – besides teaching FA/CPR. You seem to give a lot of advice as if you are an authority. Are you an Endo? a different type of Medical Doctor? an alternative practitioner? a student of health sciences (you know the tyoe the reads the mayoclinic and webmd sites and knows more than anyone)?
Did you know that a diabetic with other conditions may be better off in the A1C 6.5 – 7 range than under 6?
March 27, 2011 1:54 am at 1:54 am #753178Mother in IsraelMemberI thought Health once posted that he was a med student? Or did I make that up?

Since you read all my posts in the diabetic thread -you know my first post above was from Johns Hopkins U. Also, I posted a different # above, later on.
” I think it is time that you state clearly your medical credentials”
I cherish my privacy. It’s funny- Mod 80, who is well known by YWN staff, won’t even tell us what type of Doc he is, when I asked him.
If I ever get to meet you in real person, I’d like to take you on a tour of the type 2’s sitting in nursing homes or hospitals due to complications of diabetes. Do you really think I post on YWN my medical opinions for my own benefit?!
March 27, 2011 8:20 am at 8:20 am #753181Mother in IsraelMember“Since I’m not -don’t have any expectations of me!”
I think the expectations of you are the same as they are of everyone else who posts here–to use some thought and sensitivity when posting and not just write anything that comes to mind. Nothing more than that.
March 27, 2011 1:30 pm at 1:30 pm #753182YW Moderator-72ParticipantHealth – you claimed to be a student of health sciences in a different thread. you have every right to post – but your negativity towards others in the diabetic world is not appreciated. You present yourself as an expert which means nothing as anyone can google john hopkins, mayo, webmd and other sources just as easily — or they can do something smart like follow the advice of their medical practitioner and set realistic goals and behavior modification programs based on their condition.
I am sure that you’re a decent person – after all how many people give free first aid/cpr lessons, however, your opinions given as free advice is sometimes wrong and usually given in a negative way even when given in the authoritative tone in which you project yourself.
one last point: your comments generally upset other posters more than they help.

You’re not the one who determines what the expectations of posters are -the YWN Editor does. These are upheld by the Mods. If my posts are put through -that is good enough for me. I’m sorry I don’t meet your expectations, nor do I plan to.
March 27, 2011 6:31 pm at 6:31 pm #753187HealthParticipantMod 72 -“your opinions given as free advice is sometimes wrong”
Besides your OWN opinion, you have failed to PROVE anything I’ve posted is INCORRECT!
“and usually given in a negative way even when given in the authoritative tone in which you project yourself.”
You as a MOD, know more than anyone, that if they were like you say, they would never have been approved by the Mods!
“one last point: your comments generally upset other posters more than they help.”
Besides your own opinion and maybe the few girls that post here, how could you possibly know this? Did you take a poll of ALL the posters? Besides there are a lot of people who don’t post, but read the topics on YWN, did you survey their opinion(s)? I am here to post medical info -I feel this helps many people.
I posted this before to you – If you don’t like my posts -skip or ignore them!
