Post your questions here for the gastronomical experts in the coffee room.
I will start this is not really a cooking question but i need to know
why are they called red onions and red cabbage when we all know they are both purple hued?
July 29, 2013 2:59 am at 2:59 am #1195366popa_bar_abbaParticipantThe real ones are red. The ones you see in the store are just yellow onions with food coloring.
July 29, 2013 5:56 am at 5:56 am #1195367ToiParticipantthats funny. in my house we always called it purple cabbage.
July 29, 2013 3:43 pm at 3:43 pm #1195368Torah613TorahParticipantFor the same reason we call people redheads even though they are merely orange.
July 29, 2013 3:53 pm at 3:53 pm #1195369popa_bar_abbaParticipantAnd for the same reason we call people blockheads even though their heads aren’t made of blocks.
July 29, 2013 4:23 pm at 4:23 pm #1195370oneoutofthreeMemberfor the same reason we call eggplants- you got it… “eggplants” huh?…ye
July 29, 2013 4:31 pm at 4:31 pm #1195371🐵 ⌨ GamanitParticipantoneoutofthree- eggplants used to be small, white and egg-shaped. Just like carrots used to be purple.
July 29, 2013 4:36 pm at 4:36 pm #1195372jewishfeminist02MemberIn England, eggplants are called aubergines.
July 29, 2013 4:57 pm at 4:57 pm #1195373oneoutofthreeMemberaha they used to be and that is why… but the ones we see today are as close to eggs as purple onions are to the color red or as baby salmon is to (ocean/wild) salmon
July 29, 2013 5:08 pm at 5:08 pm #1195374oneoutofthreeMemberAubergine is also widely accepted to be referred to when describing color…
July 29, 2013 5:43 pm at 5:43 pm #1195375🐵 ⌨ GamanitParticipantI’ve actually seen real red onions. Color red. Purple onions are sweeter though…
July 29, 2013 6:25 pm at 6:25 pm #1195376WIYMemberI never heard of red cabbage. we also call it purple cabbage. Btw red onions are red (and purple-ish.)
July 29, 2013 7:13 pm at 7:13 pm #1195377nitpickerParticipant“For the same reason we call people redheads even though they are merely orange. “
Because orange was not the name of a color until the fruit became popular. The color was named after it. Before that, the color we now call orange was considered a shade of red.
July 29, 2013 7:34 pm at 7:34 pm #1195378popa_bar_abbaParticipantAnd why is wild salmon called wild, if it just sits there like a dead fish?
July 29, 2013 7:37 pm at 7:37 pm #1195379oneoutofthreeMemberbec they used to be that is why 😉
July 29, 2013 7:51 pm at 7:51 pm #1195380oneoutofthreeMemberThe bigger ‘q’ is why baby salmon is called so, it’s just a trout that swims in colored water to give it that pinkish hue
July 29, 2013 7:57 pm at 7:57 pm #1195381pixelateMemberIt is interesting that even in Lashon Hakodesh, redheads are called Edomi which means red, and not orange
July 29, 2013 10:26 pm at 10:26 pm #1195382oomisParticipantWe called the cabbage purple, never red. And why do we park in the driveway and drive on a parkway?
July 29, 2013 11:47 pm at 11:47 pm #1195383golferParticipantPixela, redheads are called Edomi?
Source?
July 30, 2013 12:03 am at 12:03 am #1195384golferParticipantGot it, Pixela.
You meant “Admoni?” From- “Adom,” red?
July 30, 2013 12:51 am at 12:51 am #1195385pixelateMembergolfer- yeah. (sorry ’bout that)
July 30, 2013 6:27 am at 6:27 am #1195386jewishfeminist02MemberWhy do you ship cargo and drive a shipment?
July 30, 2013 11:19 am at 11:19 am #1195387popa_bar_abbaParticipantWhy do you fish salmon, but not cow beef?
July 31, 2013 5:53 pm at 5:53 pm #1195388ToiParticipantin australia peppers are called capsicums. what the heck.
August 1, 2013 12:41 am at 12:41 am #1195389TheGoqParticipantProbably because peppers contain capsaicin that’s what makes chili peppers hot.
August 1, 2013 8:04 am at 8:04 am #1195390ToiParticipantgoq- i know, but still what the heck. should we start calling corn flakes riboflavin?
November 27, 2016 1:32 am at 1:32 am #1195391LightbriteParticipantIt’s unfair that zucchinis are zucchinis while yellow squash are just yellow squash.
Sometimes they are lumped in the category with zucchinis as summer squashes.
English needs to give them a unique name
November 27, 2016 11:45 am at 11:45 am #1195392Ex-CTLawyerParticipantLightbrite……….
Zucchini is just an Italian word that means little squash.
Zucca means squash.
Zucca del estate means summer squash.
Here in the northeastern US with large Italian population, who were the predominant vegetable farmers and greengrocers the Italian name came into everyday use.
November 28, 2016 1:42 am at 1:42 am #1195393LightbriteParticipantOmgosh that makes sense. It’s not even English. Wow. Yellow in Italian is “giallo.”
So a yellow squash would be Zuccagiallo.
And now I know why we just call it yellow squash!
November 28, 2016 10:39 pm at 10:39 pm #1195394ToiParticipantHa! I just saw my own posts above and busted a gut laughing. Don’t remember being so funny.
For really funny-named foods, you gotta come to Israel- seriously. Shugi pitzee anyone?
November 29, 2016 2:15 am at 2:15 am #1195395Lilmod UlelamaidParticipant“Because orange was not the name of a color until the fruit became popular. The color was named after it. Before that, the color we now call orange was considered a shade of red.”
They must have had a hard time describing the rainbow: Rry G. Biv
November 29, 2016 2:24 am at 2:24 am #1195396LightbriteParticipantBisli Bamba!
