My definition of a mermaid in this case is a person who does not dissolve in water, likes to read, has gone swimming at least once in his life, and has created change in society. So in that sense, yes, mermaids are very real.

That’s a mermaid in a tnzius Purim mermaid costume.
March 7, 2017 2:37 pm at 2:37 pm #1222570Geordie613ParticipantThanks RY.
Are trolls real?
March 7, 2017 4:27 pm at 4:27 pm #1222571Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantRY, I guess I’m a mermaid then! I think most of us are, except for those who don’t like to read. And I suppose there may be some people who never swam in their lives, but probably not too many.
There is no one who has not created change in society. Their very birth was a change.
March 7, 2017 4:38 pm at 4:38 pm #1222572👑RebYidd23ParticipantI’m a mermaid too!
March 7, 2017 5:05 pm at 5:05 pm #1222573Avram in MDParticipantUnicorns are real. My definition of a unicorn in this case is a horse or pony with at least one brass instrument (trumpet, trombone, etc.) located within a 5-mile radius.
March 7, 2017 5:08 pm at 5:08 pm #1222574Avram in MDParticipantBigfoot is real. My definition of Bigfoot in this case is someone with size 12 shoes or more.
The Loch Ness Monster is real. My definition of the Loch Ness Monster in this case is someone within 50km of Loch Ness who behaved in a mean way to someone else that day.

March 8, 2017 12:39 am at 12:39 am #1222576👑RebYidd23ParticipantBy the way, is it possible to make a tznius mermaid costume?
March 8, 2017 1:32 am at 1:32 am #1222577Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantI doubt it. The whole concept sounds untznius to me.
March 8, 2017 3:22 am at 3:22 am #1222578LightbriteParticipantUnicorns are from the Torah.
In last week’s parsha, we learned that unicorns are real. The Torah mentions a one horned horse-like animal that a number of scholars say that may be where the unicorn originated.
March 8, 2017 3:36 am at 3:36 am #1222579YW Moderator-29 👨💻ModeratorPlease be careful. When a “number of scholars” say that a one horned horse-like animal MAY be where the unicorn originated – they are NOT saying “Unicorns are real” nor are they saying “Unicorns are from the Torah”. People have a tendency to make connections and leaps in conversation that are not appropriate in Torah discussions.
If you want to get technical, saying it may be where the unicorn originated gives the impression that a unicorn is NOT real and the IDEA is what originated from this description. Surely he wouldn’t use the word originated in this context if he was implying the unicorn existed.

March 8, 2017 3:45 am at 3:45 am #1222581LightbriteParticipantMod-29, Thanks & Excellent point 🙂
Correction please:
The Torah mentions a one horned horse-like animal that a number of scholars say that may be where the unicorn [,of modern society, which portrays the unicorn as some mystical creature of Greek origin, actually] originated [in real life prior and was Hashem’s creation, according to some Jewish scholars because in the Torah, there is mention of an animal resembling a unicorn that as far as we know no longer exists today] .
April 9, 2017 6:02 pm at 6:02 pm #1253425ChortkovParticipantThe Gemara in Bechoros (8a) writes about creatures called “dolphinim” (דולפנים) which called בני ימא.

April 10, 2017 3:32 pm at 3:32 pm #1253575Sam2Participantyekke2: ironically enough, in Greek mythology, the sirens weren’t half-women/half-fish, though that is how they were depicted in later literature.
April 12, 2017 9:33 pm at 9:33 pm #1253611Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantI saw the last post was listed as being from Lightbrite from one day ago, and I got excited that she was back. I was so sad when I saw that wasn’t the case. 🙁
Yekke – cool! Thanks for sharing. I never heard of that before.
