The main ingredient in Eliquid(the liquid used in ecigs) is VG/PG which can be derived from animal fat. I once heard in the name of R’ Meir Sirotah of the Eidah Chareidis that this is not a problem since the nicotine in these liquids make them poisonous and not fit for human consumption. But I have heard from other anonymous sources that since the way of ingesting it is through vaping it is considered derech achila and is therefore assur.
Does anyone know of any reliable sources regarding this matter?

With the little I know, still that seems to make no sense. Breathing something into your lungs is how one eats?
June 6, 2015 8:53 pm at 8:53 pm #1086438takahmamashParticipantSmoking is assur.
June 6, 2015 10:41 pm at 10:41 pm #1086439sushibagelMemberModerator: At the moment I only use Dropsmoke for that reason but it’s not always available on my side of the pond and I actually prefer another brand.
Feivel: I think the reasoning is that since this particular product was designed to ingest through vaping it us considered derech achila but I’m really sure which is why I was looking for halachic sources.

June 8, 2015 12:13 am at 12:13 am #1086442Jewish ThinkerParticipantI don’t want to bring up the whole debate again, but it is very not pashut, that smoking is mutar. One should certainly ask a Rav before starting to smoke (which has numerous health problems associated with it)
June 8, 2015 12:19 am at 12:19 am #1086443☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantJT, that’s kind of off topic, as e-cigarettes are often used to help stop smoking.
Once you mention it, though, nobody really thinks smoking is a good idea, there’s just a technical question of whether it’s assur or just a bad idea. No one who starts smoking asks a shailah first.
June 8, 2015 12:24 am at 12:24 am #1086444Jewish ThinkerParticipantDY- I think you need to understand teenager physocology. A teenage kid wants to smoke e-cigs, but he doesn’t know if it is dangerous or mutar. He visits the CR and see people talking about hechsherim on it. Most do not mention the health problems, or the halachik issues. Boom, chas vesholom the kid could end up smoking if given the chance.
Do you want to be the cause of more kids smoking? Does anybody?
June 8, 2015 12:29 am at 12:29 am #1086445🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantJewish Thinker – soooo well stated, and right on the mark!
June 8, 2015 12:33 am at 12:33 am #1086446☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe kids smoking regular or e-cigarettes aren’t asking a shaila. They know it’s wrong (although they may rationalize that it’s muttar).
June 8, 2015 12:34 pm at 12:34 pm #1086448sushibagelMemberBrisker Rav: What is that you mentioned, is it a brand of ecigs?
June 8, 2015 1:19 pm at 1:19 pm #1086449sushibagelMemberI don’t wanna go in to this debate but I just wanted to point out some of the facts about ecigs.
1) They have been proven to work as a cessation device.
3) Even it’s detractors agree that it is certainly a healthier alternative to regular cigarettes.
4) The only danger that has been proven is that when used at a very high temperature for a long time certain harmful elements are released but as any ecig user will tell you doing so would result in a burnt taste(something particularly unpleasant) akin to eating burnt steak which is also associated with the same dangers.
5) The big tobacco companies are constantly looking got ways to undermine East cigarettes and make them seem like a bigger danger than they actually are .
6) The problem of children starting with these devices could easily be solved by making it illegal to sell to anyone underage.
June 8, 2015 11:07 pm at 11:07 pm #1086450Jewish ThinkerParticipantsushibagel-E-cigs do have harmful chemicals and are addictive.
I am not against someone using them to try to end his addiction to regular cigarettes, but I think you agree that if you are taking them at first, ie. you are not using it to cure an addiction problem to regular cigarettes, it is not a good idea. Indeed, it is a very bad idea.
June 9, 2015 12:22 am at 12:22 am #1086451sushibagelMemberAgreed!
But I’m back to square one 🙁
June 9, 2015 12:32 am at 12:32 am #1086452Jewish ThinkerParticipantListen, kids out there, please don’t smoke, cigs and e-cigs! Regular cigarettes are dangerous and E- cigs have chemicals that are dangerous and are also addictive. Scientists don’t yet know the long term effect of e-cigs.
Please, I beg you, don’t make the mistake and smoke! Please, Hashem loves you and gave you a beautiful body. Don’t ruin it by smoking, chas vesholom. Have you ever seen a lung cancer ward? If you ever see one, you can see the terrible effets of smoking.
Barech Hashem, the number of smokers have significaly decreased.

June 9, 2015 2:19 am at 2:19 am #1086454thinkingoutloud91MemberThere was an article some time ago stating that E cigarettes are worse then regular cigarettes. Wether that is true or not I don’t know – and cannot find an additional source at this time. ( doesn’t make sense to me though)
I don’t think teenagers are spending their day/ evening reading this – so that shouldn’t be a problem. And I am sure whoever started this thread is aware of the repercussions.
But if you are out here Jewish Thinker is right. Smoking may seem the ‘Cool’ thing to do. Its really not worth it. 8 years later I am trying to quit and have been for some time now – and its really hard. and [stinks] edited
Sushi bagel i don’t know hechserim but I really hope this works for you. If not they have Chantax which at this point your insurance should cover it. Side affects includes and not limited to Nausea. But it seems to have helped a lot of people.
Good luck!
June 9, 2015 2:39 am at 2:39 am #1086455sushibagelMemberAll I wanted was an answer to a halachic query which I still haven’t gotten.
I never meant to offend anyone nor was it my intention to encourage smoking of ANY KIND.
If you feel that this thread is somehow encouraging, glorifying or even normalising smoking then by all means, go ahead and share your concerns with the mods, perhaps they’ll agree with you and close it.
If you want to discuss the dangers of smoking, please feel free to start a new thread, this one is not about that.
If you actually have an answer to my question, I’d love to hear it.
June 9, 2015 10:06 am at 10:06 am #1086456sushibagelMemberFor heaven’s sake comon guys!
(I don’t mean anyone on particular)
When you see an ad in the paper advertising ecigs do you feel the need to run an ad telling kids it’s not cool?
If I would have asked about the kashrus of soft drinks and soda would you have also felt it necessary to point out the dangers?
There may be a problem of YOUNG teens experimenting with ecigs and I stress YOUNG because I have yet to meet anyone over the age of fifteen who started with an ecig as opposed to switching from its more deadly cousin but the fault here lies entirely with those who sell ecigs to YOUNG teens. (I’m all for making it a punishable offense to sell ecigs to anyone under the age of 18/21 but leave us adults alone)
This whole idea of ecigs being a gateway to regular cigarettes is utter nonsense! A bunch of hogwash being touted by nanny state advocating left wing loonies who wish you to believe that anything other than using an eco-friendly shopping bag and riding a bicycle will kill you, those around you and the earth for good measure.
So here I am a mature adult trying to have an intelligent conversation with other grown ups about something which according to it’s harshest critics is much safer than cigarettes, something which has helped millions of smokers like me kick or at least fight a very dangerous habit but all I get is some babble about teens thinking it’s cool. So let me make this clear; kids, teens and any adult out there foolish enough to think that smoking of any kind is cool please take note, IT’S NOT, not cool at all it’s highly addictive, contains dangerous chemicals, it’s affects are still unknown and it’s sometimes extremely annoying to people around you. Now can we get back on topic?
