I just find it so odd to read so much gashmius talk from people who normally espouse the importance of ruchnius and the sheker of gashmius. And for what???? A hat?????? Incredible!
February 1, 2015 9:41 pm at 9:41 pm #1056945☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantFWIW, I couldn’t care less what hat someone else wears, I just think it’s ludicrous for people to be judging yeshiva bochurim negatively for preferring a nicer, better quality hat.
February 1, 2015 11:02 pm at 11:02 pm #1056946Yayin Yashan B’Kli ChadashParticipantOomis: If they takeh last longer, then they save money in the long run. This saves money for more important things. Yeshiva people try not to waste money, because money is time, and time is buttul torah. I’m not taking sides, I’m just trying to weigh things fairly.
February 2, 2015 3:07 pm at 3:07 pm #1056948flatbusherParticipantDaas Yachid, I think you are missing the point on this. People who don’t earn money have no expectations that they should spend more of someone else’s money, especially their parents. IYH when they grow up and decide to work, then they can spend their money as they wish, but it takes a certain amount of chutzpah to expect someone else to pay more for your expensive tastes. If you don’t feel that way, then perhaps you grew up in the same mindset of “it’s coming to me.”
February 2, 2015 3:27 pm at 3:27 pm #1056949☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWe’re talking about an extra $100-$150 or so on a hat which will last longer than the cheaper ones, and is only a once every year and a half to three years’ purchase. It’s something which is worn (when new) on Shabbos and Yom Tov, so as a nicer looking item which in the long run may only be marginally more expensive (if at all), is a very reasonable expenditure l’kavod Shabbos V’yom Tov.
You make it sound like we’re talking about custom $1000 suits, $250 shirts and ties, and $400 shoes, or going to Prime Grill twice a week.
Gimme a break.
February 2, 2015 4:00 pm at 4:00 pm #1056954Yayin Yashan B’Kli ChadashParticipantIts a $50-$75 difference, not $100-$150. If it lasts six months longer, (2 years instead of 1.5), them after six years you’ve already broken even. Its lav davka wasting money. And the issue isn’t just yeshiva boys, many of us adults have the same question when buying a hat, with money that we earned.
February 2, 2015 9:10 pm at 9:10 pm #1056955flatbusherParticipantHow many bochurim you know hold on to a hat for six years? How many adults really want to wear the same hat for that amount of time.
February 2, 2015 9:58 pm at 9:58 pm #1056956☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThat’s not what he said.
He assumes two years, and that the cheaper hat will last for a year and a half.
February 2, 2015 10:40 pm at 10:40 pm #1056957A jew who caresParticipantThe price difference in Israel between a borsalino and brandolino is only around 150nis (less than $40)
There are obviously cheaper ones including pressed wool ones though a drop of water over them will already cause decay.
Yeshiva bachurim save money in many other areas e.g. giving each other haircuts.
I still can’t believe that there are people out there who can’t fargin that bachurim can have a small taiveh like this.

Those small taiveh-filled yeshivah boys sometimes grow up to be the guys who cannot fargin their women to buy expensive shaitlech, jewlery or clothing. I personally see no need for EITHER a Borsalino OR new $4,000 custom shaitel. But what do I know? I learned to make do with what I could afford, even when the items were a little worn. I didn’t grow up in an entitled generation, something which is seriously prevalent today.
February 3, 2015 12:41 am at 12:41 am #1056962A jew who caresParticipantI somehow fail to see the connection between affording a $4000 dollar item and a $200 one.
