I was watching the videos at the tish’s and was wondering why its mutar to throw food???? We always were taught and teach our kids not to throw food. Why because you are a Rebbe does it make it Mutar?????

I’ve heard you aren’t supposed to throw bread (not necessarily assur). Never heard it regarding food in general.

Maybe we just teach our kids not to throw food because it’s bad manners.

where does this minhag come from anyways? who came up with this minhag? i would love an honest answer

You have never seen a Rebbe giving out Sherayim (I think thats the word)?

The food is thrown and fought over by the chassidim of the Rebbe

    But why apples?

And who said that Sherayim is allowed to be “thrown and fought over by the chassidim of the Rebbe?” It is food, after all.

    #1188874

I’ve seen shirayim given out in platters and passed around but THROWING THAT’S INSANE and bizayon ochel

hey all you misnagdim. anything chasidim do is strange to you. apples are considered holy cause it says chakal tapichin kadishin, holy apple orchards. throwing the aplles shows an extra measure of love to the chasidim. you misnagdim will never understand this.

Guys, please check out my Shmiras Haloshon thread!

    1. If you think that something assur was done in the video, it is assur to tell anyone about it.

    2. It is a bigger aveira to tell anyone about it then it was to have done the original action you are telling people about.

    3. It is assur to speak badly about groups of people.

MA – careful about the Loshon Hora here… We are supposed to be melamed zchus on others, not to find fault.

I think the point is that if it’s their established Minhag, it’s not an aveira.

More importantly, Meno is correct and it’s not assur to throw food – only bread and food that will get destroyed and hence, wasted.

“I think the point is that if it’s their established Minhag, it’s not an aveira.”

I’ve never understood this. In some circles, especially the chassidish world, there is no system of checks and balances when it comes to minhagim. Anything that may have once been can be passed off as a minhag, or mesorah, even if it involves an aveirah or something that’s a distortion of the Torah. Why is this?

YY- I think they eat it – that is why they are throwing it -so obviously it is not so ruined that it’s inedible, so there is on “baal tashchis”.

Gofish – I don’t think that there is anything being done that is an aveira.

?? ????? to cast doubt at ???? ????? ?? just because YOU don’t know. Any group that’s headed by a Gadol has “platzos”, shoulders, for any deeds that seem improper in YOUR EYES. Checks and balances?!? Look, look hard, you’ll find it – MORE IN CHASSIDISHE CIRCLES!!!

Look up, do research, investigate, do homework before you dare castigate a community as a whole!!

“Look up, do research, investigate, do homework before you dare castigate a community as a whole!!”

    Oh, trust me I have.

Not just in my eyes. There are various minhagim and takanos that have become part of a community’s mesorah that have been called out by gedolim as being improper to do and against halacha. Yet somehow, the status of a ‘minhag’ protects it from scrutiny or correction.

    SHOOT!!!!

Let’s hear about them. And let’s hear who “the gedolim” are that are judging them as being against the halach.

And if she has good examples, you really want them posted? And if they are posted, you aren’t going to request they be deleted? This is not a very tenable request.

Sure, I’ll give you an example though it might get deleted.

The Gerrer marriage takanos. The Steipler Gaon wrote a scathing kuntris against them, saying that it is against the Torah and halacha, and most other rabbonim in klal Yisroel are against it as well. Yet in Ger, it is mesorah and as such ‘protected’ from basic halacha.

But if she has points, why not bring them out to discuss – enlighten.

?? ?? ???? ?????, minhagim were not just “invented” by a wold horde c”v. There’s a mekor, inyan, p’sak to all Minhagei Yisroel. And just because little i doesn’t know, doesn’t matter the least. I follow our community’s minhagim. And I try to understand the reasons. I try to understand the reasons for other communities actions as well.

Gofish, is your question about throwing apples? While not the Minhag in our community, I understand it quite well. It’s not at all ??? ????? and is the fastest way to get from point A to point B. And btw I don’t think it’s the Rebbes who are throwing, I think it’s the Gabaim.

I would just like to point out that no one in this thread has brought any source (let alone a good source) for the fact that there is something inherently wrong with throwing food.

I’m not taking sides, I’m just saying that it seems there is a lot of bashing based only on feelings rather than facts.

    “hey all you misnagdim”

That is quite a rude way to address people.

Please will you nicely explain this minhag that, yes, may appear strange and doesn’t appear in my shulchan oruch.

    Thank you.

Then you can ask me about a “misnagid” minhag that you may not understand.

Watching a Chassidic Rebbe with Vaisa Zocken (white socks) throwing apples this past Simchas Torah in Chicago, I thought I was watching the Chicago White Sox, while everyone else was following the Cubs.

Firstly, I don’t know the basis of the minhag. But I did see in a sefer regarding the Oberlander city of Serdahel (not Chasidic)that the gabbaim (not the Rav) would toss apples into the shul from the attic window that opened into the shul. As I said, I don’t know the reason for it.

Secondly, there are many instances where minhag contravenes apparent halacha. For example, in Oberland cities on Simchas Torah, the Kohanim during Nesiyas Kapayim at Shachris sang 3 different songs (although now-a-days most shuls don’t sing at all). This was the minhag in Pressburg as well during the times of the Chasam Sofer. Yet see Mishnah Berura on the subject (don’t have the sefer with me now).

Lastly, regarding throwing food, nobody seems to mention that food is also thrown in almost every shul when there is a chassan’s bavarfen/aufruf. In fact, my Rav once spoke about it and indicated that although there is the accepted minhag for women to throw the candies at the chassan, there is no similar minhag for men or boys to do it. Therefore he indicated that it would seem to be assur for men and boys to throw candies/food at the chassan, although many men/boys do it anyway.

Gosh, can someone please tell me where it says it’s assur to throw food?

The halachos of not throwing food are found in the Shulchan Aruch Siman 171, seif 1.

It says there that you are not allowed to throw bread, and you are not allowed to throw other foods that get ruined when you throw them, but you are allowed to throw other foods (meaning anything but bread) if it something that does not get ruined when it is thrown such as nuts or pomegranates.

The Mishna Berurah there (s”k 10 & 11) explains that you can’t throw something such as figs because they are soft and will get mushed and t/f ruined when they are thrown, but nuts and pomegranates are okay because they are hard and do not get mushed when they are thrown.

I don’t think that apples get mushed when they are thrown. They clearly remain edible since the Chassidim eat them. So it seems that this whole thing is completely muttar and there is NO basis for saying it is assur.

“They clearly remain edible since the Chassidim eat them.”

Are you certain that “since chassidim eat them” is the halachic guideline to determine if something is ruined. A starving person would eat nuts that fell onto a muddy floor yet it is not permitted to throw nuts, in their shells onto muddy floors (see siman daled).

    So it’s muttar.

This entire thread is based on a false premise.

lilmod ulelamaid et al: Umm… what about kapporos? In theory the chickens are given to feed poor individuals. In reality chickens are thrown away and thus wasted food on a mass scale.

    #1188915

We are talking about throwing food (onto something, such as the ground). When you do kapparos, you don’t throw the chickens onto anything.

I’ve never done kapparos with chickens, so I have no idea what happens to the chickens, but it seems to me that they are not really wasted because they were used for kapparos so they WERE used for something – a Mitzvah.
