May 19, 2011 7:19 pm at 7:19 pm #769982gefenParticipantI’m not in NY. What do the ads say exactly?
May 19, 2011 7:19 pm at 7:19 pm #769983dunnoMemberAre you talking about the May 21 “Judgement Day”? Because I’m pretty curious what that is all about.

May 19, 2011 7:25 pm at 7:25 pm #769985lovebeingjewishParticipantyeah the may 21st doomsday ad, the fact that they put a date on it is absurd bc we as Jewish ppl who believe in Mashiach who will come at the appropriate time when Hashem wants him to. he can come right now, we dont know dates and were not supposed to put a date on it. bc then what if he doesnt come, ppl will have questions and then fall out of religion…
May 19, 2011 7:29 pm at 7:29 pm #769986bptParticipantI’ve seen it. I also saw people handing out flyers in the train station, and they look like J for J people.
Not too worried though. The 21st is Shabbos, so I’m feeling pretty secure.
May 19, 2011 7:34 pm at 7:34 pm #769987adorableParticipantcan someone explain please?!

May 19, 2011 8:34 pm at 8:34 pm #769995apushatayidParticipantMr. Doomsday is part of a larger “church”. Just google Harold Camping. No, he isn’t predicting any fires, just an earthquake. 6pm., but dont hold him to the time, he is only reasonably sure of the time, but the date and what will happen he is certainly sure. From the cnnmoney article about him, the writer seems to imply (it’s what I infer from the article and the way it is written and the things it focuses on) that Mr. Camping will abscond with the church money. According to their IRS filing, they get on avg 18 million dollars a year in donations and account for 8-10 million in expenses.
May 19, 2011 8:44 pm at 8:44 pm #769996YW Moderator-80Member“called it” doesnt work in there here parts.
you have to say “dibs”
May 19, 2011 9:32 pm at 9:32 pm #769997lovebeingjewishParticipantif he is so sure, i would like to wager against Mr Camping. Can I make an official, legal bet with the guy for a million dollars?
May 19, 2011 10:19 pm at 10:19 pm #769998ItcheSrulikMemberbpt: They aren’t J for J’s they’re just normal, garden variety “for J’s.” That’s the shabbos before my college begins finals, so the big joke on campus is “are you gonna bother studying.”

You are HILARIOUS!!!!
May 19, 2011 11:04 pm at 11:04 pm #770001apushatayidParticipantCNN has an interview with one of the employees of this “church”. She says 80% of the employees think he is insane and they are planning to show up to work Monday, like always. As a secretary, she has scheduled numerous appointments and meetings for company employees for next week and beyond.
May 20, 2011 12:21 am at 12:21 am #770003mischiefmakerMemberYeah, I heard about it. I understand who’s doing it but where are there warped ideas from. Why May 21 and not June 2 or s/t. Why an earthquake? It’s totally crazy, but how can they backup what they are saying? They have no reasoning.
May 20, 2011 2:03 am at 2:03 am #770004TikkunHatzotMemberIt’s totally crazy, but how can they backup what they are saying?
Which is the same question I ask about all of their beliefs…
May 20, 2011 3:32 am at 3:32 am #770005ItcheSrulikMembermischiefmaker: Theyr’e all imitating the lower sort of false prophet from the middle ages, the kind that was more concerned with scansion than accuracy so all their prophecies went something like:
Unto an end the world shall come
in umpty tumpty tumpty one.
(Ten points if anyone can guess which novel I stole that one from.)
May 20, 2011 6:46 am at 6:46 am #770006ZachKessinMemberPredicting when the world will end is an old game. There was some guy about 150 years ago who predicted it 4 times (all of them wrong) What was amazing was that after the 3rd date came and went he still had some followers.
The technical term for this is “Eschatology” for anyone who may care.
May 20, 2011 1:51 pm at 1:51 pm #770007ItcheSrulikMemberZach: If we’re thinking of the same guy, he still does. They’re called Jeh*vah’s witlesses. 😉 I don’t like using the word “eschatology” for these nutjobs because I’ve most often seen it in connection with the nevi’im achronim and the aggada about our Mashiach.
May 20, 2011 2:28 pm at 2:28 pm #770008gefenParticipantoy! should i hide under the covers tomorrow? i’m shaking! someone let me know when it’s over. oh wait, when it’s over nobody will be here to let me know. oy oy oy – it’s gonna be lonely.
there have always been nutcases in this world. why should it be any different now?
let’s just daven for moshiach.
Have a great Shabbos everyone and enjoy Lag B’Omer!!!
May 20, 2011 2:52 pm at 2:52 pm #770009charliehallParticipantRev. Camping previously predicted the end of the world for October 1994.
May 20, 2011 2:59 pm at 2:59 pm #770010yaakov doeParticipantToday’s NY Times has an article about some of these people and another about a man who made similiar predictions years ago. I assume that those behind the May 21st end of the world will makes the rounds of the talk shows beginning May 22.
Look, they’re done no harm and contributed to the economy with the ads.
May 20, 2011 3:05 pm at 3:05 pm #770011mikehall12382MemberThe only thing happening on May 21st is me going to shul and comming home for a nice lunch…There will also be sleeping, walking and learning mixed in…
May 20, 2011 3:08 pm at 3:08 pm #770012apushatayidParticipant1010 Wins in NY interviewed a believer who stated he stopped paying his utility bills among other things. The reporter asked him if he could come back sunday morning for a follow up and the guy told him “not sure where I will be that day”. If you are in or near NYC tune in to 94.7 FM you get to hear mr camping.
May 20, 2011 3:10 pm at 3:10 pm #770013ZachKessinMemberItcheSrulik The guy I am thinking of was from about 150 years ago, but it is quite possible that there are a bunch of others that are more recent that I have not noticed. (Actually Its quite probable)

This morning I went outside and I saw my neighbor coming towards me. I said, “Hey, here comes Mr. Akkum and his son JuneYor. Do I get to take your house after all you people are gone?” His son started to protest, but I said, “Pipe down, JuneYor.”
