1) What was your initial motivation for taking up running?
Mostly just to get fit and give my heart a good workout. Losing a couple of pounds is always a motivation…
2) Where you successful in meeting that goal?
Yep, I’m hooked. I go into withdrawal if 48hrs pass without a run…
January 6, 2009 1:58 am at 1:58 am #695239asdfghjklParticipant1) What was your initial motivation for taking up running?
staying in shape, to exercise, to keep my body in top form!!!
2) Where you successful in meeting that goal?
sure i was!!! i love it & do a daily hour & a half workout!!! you should see my abs!!!
January 6, 2009 2:10 am at 2:10 am #695240CuriousMemberExcept that running doesn’t tone the abs, you’d have to do other exercises for that… think crunches.
January 6, 2009 2:20 am at 2:20 am #695242asdfghjklParticipantCurious: i do many other exercises other than running, just saying in general that i’m in top form!!! running go me into being an exercise fanatic so…..
January 6, 2009 2:36 am at 2:36 am #695243dunnoMembercrunches are half sit ups, right? how long do you stay in that position for?
p.s. although i didn’t do any running tonight, i made up for it with other exercises. i’m so proud of myself lol
January 6, 2009 2:37 am at 2:37 am #695244CuriousMemberI’d love to have your job that gives you so much time to exercise, run, blog…
January 6, 2009 2:45 am at 2:45 am #695245CuriousMemberdunno, if you’re fist getting back into running, then do not run every day. Space it out to every 2 days for the first few weeks. You do not want to injure your fatigued muscles.
January 6, 2009 2:47 am at 2:47 am #695246asdfghjklParticipantCurious: don’t be too jealous there!!!!
January 6, 2009 3:58 am at 3:58 am #695247dunnoMembercurious: thanks for the tip. ill keep it in mind

asdf – I feel the same way as Curious. I’d love a schedule with time for all that!
for the curious here, ab excersizes shape the muscles, though only weight loss will make them pronounced and visible…
Curious – You go girl!
Yoshi – You’re really on top of things there and having fluid goals is the way to go!
January 6, 2009 11:57 pm at 11:57 pm #695250asdfghjklParticipantAshreinu: well lucky for me that i get to put in less hours than most, because of my trust fund!!! btw i’ve never told anyone about my trust fund!!!

January 7, 2009 3:31 am at 3:31 am #695254CuriousMemberHere we go…

January 8, 2009 5:02 am at 5:02 am #695261CuriousMemberasdf – if you really go for all those long runs you should be drinking electrolyte solutions not just water.
January 8, 2009 5:11 am at 5:11 am #695262asdfghjklParticipantCurious; i used to drink lots of powerade, but they have lots of sugar so i stay away from them now!!! btw before the fast i had 64 fl oz of purple powerade!!! i should have gotten an iv, to put it straight in!!! now i drink close to a gallon of water daily!!!!
January 8, 2009 5:37 am at 5:37 am #695263CuriousMemberHave pity on your kidneys, please.
January 8, 2009 5:42 am at 5:42 am #695264beaconParticipantasd,wow that is a lot of water(!!!!!!!!!!!)
I love powerade and I drink it because I hate water so thats the only way I stay hydrated… but I agree the sugar aint too healthy
January 8, 2009 5:42 am at 5:42 am #695265asdfghjklParticipantCurious: ha ha nice one!!!! ok!!!!!
January 8, 2009 5:55 am at 5:55 am #695266CuriousMemberThink hyponatremia.
January 8, 2009 5:55 am at 5:55 am #695267asdfghjklParticipantbeacon: have you even tried vitamin water??? i heard it’s healthier than powerade!!!
January 8, 2009 6:33 am at 6:33 am #695268asdfghjklParticipantCurious: yikes i just googled it!!! my doc says it’s fine cause of my long workouts!!!
January 8, 2009 3:05 pm at 3:05 pm #695269CuriousMemberThat’s just the point asdf. You lose salt in sweat and then when you rehydrate with water only, you’re just adding water without salt, thus leaving you at risk for low salt in your blood. This is only an issue on long runs. That’s why all marathoners are rehydrating with electrolyte solutions or they take salt tablets (never do the latter without your doc’s ok).
January 8, 2009 5:15 pm at 5:15 pm #695270yoshiMemberI have at least 8 cups of tap water a day, but usually more on my longer runs.
Most sport drinks do have some electrolytes, but are loaded with sugar. Powerade now makes sugar free sports drinks. There are some electrolytes in them to keep you going, but if you are a hard core runner, then you might want to talk to your doctor about taking potassium supplements, as well as a B complex. You shouldn’t take extra vitamins unless you have a blood test and/or your doctors orders.
Anyone in NJ into 5ks? Every sunday of January, they are having a 5k race in Freehold, and it only cost about 5 bucks to enter each time. Its smaller, but loads of fun, you should check it out.
January 8, 2009 5:46 pm at 5:46 pm #695271beaconParticipantYeah I drink Vitamin water too but its not as good..

January 11, 2009 3:08 am at 3:08 am #695281asdfghjklParticipantprosect park, marine park, ocean parkway……
January 11, 2009 3:15 am at 3:15 am #695282CuriousMemberTry coney island boardwalk or west side highway 🙂
January 11, 2009 3:20 am at 3:20 am #695283beaconParticipantOr if you really wanna ruin your chances at a normal shidduch, go with belt parkway lol
January 11, 2009 3:32 am at 3:32 am #695284CuriousMemberNORMAL is no longer part of my vocab 🙂
January 11, 2009 3:33 am at 3:33 am #695285asdfghjklParticipanti’ve even been to bell harbor boardwalk several times!!! it’s great there!!
January 11, 2009 3:57 am at 3:57 am #695286JosephParticipantCan anyone here define “normal”? I doubt any descriptions will be alike.
January 11, 2009 4:04 am at 4:04 am #695287beaconParticipantyou’re right. ok MY definition of normal
January 11, 2009 4:07 am at 4:07 am #695288Bais Yaakov maydelParticipantbelle harbor is great i can attest to that–but its not in bklyn! (15-20 minute drive)the boardwalk is usually quiet, not a soul around…
dont get too far into the lower numbers though, not too safe
prospect park is safe depending on when you go
the whole world is on ocean pkwy or in marine park
NORMAL: anything below you is too modern, anything above you too frum, but YOU are perfectly “normal”
