I was wondering if anyone else here in the YWN COFFEE ROOM runs regularly?
Anyone here been in marathons or 5k type races?
It would be nice to have a “runners” discussion thread, for support, advice, tips, etc.
September 22, 2008 1:40 pm at 1:40 pm #695088Give Me a BreakMemberWhy?
September 22, 2008 2:17 pm at 2:17 pm #695089noitallmrParticipantNo offense but this is really too random!!!

yoshi – “It would be nice to have a “runners” discussion thread, for support, advice, tips, etc.”
noitallmr – “No offense but this is really too random!!!”
There are tons of support groups/forums out there on this topic, yet I never could find one that is led by Jewish folks (or have Jewish members that I’m aware of) Well, here’s my chance to get one started 🙂
September 22, 2008 4:22 pm at 4:22 pm #695091rabbiofberlinParticipantI used to be a big runner…sadly, my kness aren’t what they used to be!
September 22, 2008 5:13 pm at 5:13 pm #695092SJSinNYCMemberI personally dont run because I know too many people who have long term effects of running. It wears down your knees and puts a lot of strain on your body!
A friend of mine was a big runner in high school. She could run for miles and miles without getting her heart beat up too fast or sweating too much. She was in awesome shape!
Sorry I cant be of any support to you, but good luck!
September 22, 2008 8:28 pm at 8:28 pm #695093mdlevineMemberto the negative posters here – if you have no desire to run or read a thread on running, feel free to opt out of this thread.
September 22, 2008 8:46 pm at 8:46 pm #695094Pashuteh YidMemberI run 4-5 miles 3x per week, but not competitively. I have read that it is actually good for the knees. It is also good for the heart and lungs and general well-being. Even the Rambam writes it is important to get exercise.
At first, I could barely go around the block without getting out of breath. You gradually build up, and it becomes second-nature. Have been doing it for probably 15-20 years now. One of the most important things is to find a route that you enjoy. This way you will pay attention to the scenery, and not think about any discomfort. I hate running on treadmills or tracks, because they are boring, and all you think about is how much time do I have left. Finding a path around a lake or pond or park is very pleasant. I do not like running in the cold, but I have forced myself even in single digits. You need a mask hat to cover entire face, and a jacket with a hood to go over it. You also need a warm sweatsuit in addition, and a good pair of gloves.
Much nicer in warm weather. Go during day, as you can trip and get hurt at night, and it is also warmer then.
September 22, 2008 10:23 pm at 10:23 pm #695095lesschumrasParticipantIn addition to what Pasheteh Yid said, don’t skimp on the shoes, gedt the best ones that your budget will allow. In terms of support and sjock absorption, your knees and joints will thank you.
In terms of where you run, I agree that parks and roads in the country are more inresting, but are harder ( concrete and asphalt ) are hard on the knees. Boardwalks ( in the winter when there are no bathers walking around ) with their wood surface and ocean views are great.
September 22, 2008 10:52 pm at 10:52 pm #695096camerakid400MemberIn my opinion, running is too much schlepping. Its not healthy in this heat.
A 1 hour walk in cooler weather or on a treadmill is better.
September 23, 2008 12:11 am at 12:11 am #695097JewessMemberI’m not a runner but a rollerblader. If anybody wants to form an inline skating club, I’m in. 😉
September 23, 2008 7:06 pm at 7:06 pm #695098chaimsmomMemberI run 30-40 miles a week. I ran a half-marathon in April and was supposed to run a full marathon a couple of weeks ago, but it was cut short due to tropical storm Ike. The best running site I’ve found is Hal Higdon’s.
September 23, 2008 8:35 pm at 8:35 pm #695099rabbiofberlinParticipanthal higdon’s ??? where is that?
September 23, 2008 8:50 pm at 8:50 pm #695100feivelParticipanthalhigdon.com

September 23, 2008 9:01 pm at 9:01 pm #695101feivelParticipantthank you yoshi
i havent run in 20 yrs
im starting to get that old feeling again, that craving to run
we’ll see
September 23, 2008 9:10 pm at 9:10 pm #695102devorah1MemberI run also, but on the treadmill about 20-25 miles a week and it is helpful hearing from other people different thoughts or facts
September 23, 2008 11:36 pm at 11:36 pm #695103yoshiMemberWow! it’s great to see so much feedback!
I run 10-15 miles a week, I’m trying to work myself up. It would be really cool to do a marathon, so far all I’ve done is a 5k. But there were over 1500 people and it was still an amazing experience.
I’d also suggest runnersworld.com – it has tons of useful tips, and info, and they have a schedule for when different races are in your area, (that’s how I found out about the 5k)
And p.s. runner’s high DOES exist! After I do just a 2 or 3 mile run I have so much energy, feel so positive, and happy.
September 24, 2008 12:09 am at 12:09 am #695104Pashuteh YidMemberA talmid chacham once told me that whatever time you invest from learning when you are young to keep yourself in shape and thin, will pay off in more learning time when you are old, since your body will be healthier, and you will need to spend less time at doctors. While we can’t ever be sure of that, as only the RBSH knows, it seems to make sense. We must take care of our bodies, and not let them go to pot.
One also sleeps deeper, and may end up needing less sleep to feel rested, when in shape. After a long run during the day, one simply collapses into bed that night and wakes up refreshed the next morning.
September 24, 2008 3:01 am at 3:01 am #695105monsey2MemberI run 20-24 miles per week. There is a Chai Lifeline marathon scheduled in January, I believe. You need $3600 in sponsorship and it takes place in Florida
December 3, 2008 2:42 am at 2:42 am #695106CuriousMemberI know this is 2 months late…
I run 3 miles 3-4x/week, unfortunately on the treadmill as there’s not many places for a nice BY girl to run outside.
I would love to do a 5k race, but then again I tznius may be an issue.
December 4, 2008 1:47 am at 1:47 am #695107illini07MemberI run as well. It’s a great de-stresser and energy booster. If you are looking for interesting new places and routes to run, check out http://www.mapmyrun.com
And I definitely agree with the poster who said not to skimp on shoes. If you have inadequate shoes, you can end up with serious problems with your feet, ankles, knees, and legs. It’s worth it to keep the running healthy and safe.
And don’t forget to stretch!
December 4, 2008 3:07 am at 3:07 am #695108CuriousMemberOther than the Chai lifeline (half) marathon comming up in January in Miami, anyone know of other half-marathons or such a little further down the calendar?
December 4, 2008 3:13 am at 3:13 am #695109JAPPMemberi dont “run” on the treadmill, i just go on for excersize, and by the way i cant imagine any BY girl running in any sort of marathon
December 4, 2008 3:19 am at 3:19 am #695110Bais Yaakov maydelParticipantjewess: im a rollerblader too!
iit started in 5th grade…not too long ago…lol–i used to go evry single night no joke then in 8th grade i got too cool for rollerblading…now im back to “hot”–anyone who read my post about smoking will get this…i sound like im advertising my posts…maybe subconsciously i think im so brilliant, evryone should get a load of my wisdom….okay i should probably stop here….lol so is anyone else tired??

December 4, 2008 3:51 pm at 3:51 pm #695113CuriousMemberasdf – an hour and a half? I’m jealous…
BTW, running has been one of the best things I have chosen to do. Besides for dropping lbs, more fit, more energy, it’s done a lot for me in the discipline and motivation area, something I think many people can benefit from.
December 4, 2008 7:41 pm at 7:41 pm #695114tzippiMemberI can’t believe there’s not a Jewishrunners@yahoogroups . Everything else under the sun is there.
December 5, 2008 3:07 am at 3:07 am #695115asdfghjklParticipantyoshi i’m on with you, that ”runner high” does exsist! if i had more time i would do run for longer, but i do have a job! while i’m talkin about my workout, i swim twice a week. swimming is my favorite thing ever to do!!
December 5, 2008 4:11 am at 4:11 am #695116Bais Yaakov maydelParticipantasdfghjkl: i love your enthusiasm. i dont think ive read more than a few sentences of yours that dont have !!!!!!! at the end 🙂

lol thnx!!! it’s kinda my signature thing!!!
December 5, 2008 6:45 pm at 6:45 pm #695118JewessMemberBais Yaakiv Maidel, How can you be too cool for rollerblading? (confused) When I was in the fifth grade, rollerblades were a novelty. I got mine at the end of eighth, (about 1994). It was considered “cool” back in the day. 😉
December 7, 2008 4:37 am at 4:37 am #695119Bais Yaakov maydelParticipantasdfghjkl: i noticed 🙂
jewess: i was being sarcastic, i was trying to convey the childish message of how i thought rollerblading was “uncool” in the 8th grade. lol
December 7, 2008 5:03 am at 5:03 am #695120AshreinuParticipantSomewhat new to running here. It’s a whole ‘nother world and it pays off! Don’t think I’ve experienced a “runner’s high” yet, but I’m getting there. Yes, the discipline to be consistent with it as well as the physical feelings of wellness and wight loss are great bonuses abt it! There’s nothing like waking up reallly early and running out the door. It’s much easier to do than get up for work:)
December 8, 2008 7:01 am at 7:01 am #695121asdfghjklParticipantcome on lazy people ya gatta start running, or at least doing some exercise before….you get to old & loose your chance!!!!
December 8, 2008 4:13 pm at 4:13 pm #695122Pashuteh YidMemberThe only problem with running is the annoying cold weather. Then I have to force myself.
December 8, 2008 5:02 pm at 5:02 pm #695123rabbiofberlinParticipantmmmm…. Interesting that the runners seem to be the same people that are at odds with the general tenor of the posters here (pashute yid, illin07,etc) And, even more interesting, I(another of those pesky outsiders) too have been a runner for man, many years. I recently stopped running and only walk because of my knees (Pashute yid, I do not think it improves your knees).
In my heyday- I used to run 4-5 miles every other day. Often in the streets, more recently on a track. I loved it. It makes yo ufeel great ,improves your stamina and you really enjoy the shower afterwards!
I used to fun in the evening (I am not a morning person)but I hated doing it in the winter, too cold.
All of you youngsters- go for it and you will enjoy it! That includes “bais yaakov girls”. Why can’t you run too? if you are very frum ,just wear a very loose sskirt…
December 8, 2008 5:24 pm at 5:24 pm #695124CuriousMemberROB – living in a very frum community, I do no think it’s appropriate for a BY girl to run within the local city streets. We learn to improvise – there’s always the gym or drive out to a park where running is acceptable there.
And yes I agree with you that more pple should be doing this, go for it!!
December 8, 2008 5:25 pm at 5:25 pm #695125squeakParticipantHmmm. Interesting analysis. Maybe it’s because of all the time you spend running alone with your own thoughts. Leads to some independent thinking. Maybe you should run with your Daas Torah instead.
December 8, 2008 8:56 pm at 8:56 pm #695127AshreinuParticipantLong skirt + long sleeves + local park = noone has to know that “BY Girl” just went for a run. Hmmm, maybe she’s even training for next years NYC Marathon:) Pop in a nice shiur and your set for some serious mind and body excersize. I find that the shiur helps take the mind off of the ardous task of getting into a running routine, at least in the combative endeavor against procrastination and laziness…
December 9, 2008 12:06 am at 12:06 am #695128CuriousMemberAshreinu – 😉
For some reason, comfy clothes in a women’s only gym is more tempting. But NYC Marathon, now that’s an idea!
Till now it’s been fast music only, but hey, listening to a shiur is not a bad idea. Before you know it, 5 miles are up and you’re on your way to spiritual improvement too.
December 9, 2008 3:41 am at 3:41 am #695129Bais Yaakov maydelParticipantyou know, ive seen many Jewish, frum women running in marathons, because my father has ran a few, and ive seen them while waiting for my father to cross the finish line. they looked perfectly tznius, there was nothing wrong with it, i even used to think i would one day run with my father in one of these marathons lol but anyway rabbiofberlin: By doesnt necessarily mean “very frum” it kud just mean “normal frum”
December 9, 2008 6:06 am at 6:06 am #695130illini07MemberSqueak:
That was great – I got a real kick out of that one. Thanks!
December 9, 2008 1:48 pm at 1:48 pm #695131I can only tryMemberrabbiofberlin-
Have you considered biking or swimming?
President Bush switched from running to biking because of knee issues.
Biking lets you choose how easy or difficult your workout will be, depending on the terrain you choose and which gear you pick, as well as letting you vary the speed and intensity of your ride.
December 9, 2008 1:53 pm at 1:53 pm #695132JosephParticipantillini07, unless I’m mistaken, squeak meant what he said in his last sentence.
December 10, 2008 7:23 pm at 7:23 pm #695133yoshiMemberSwimming is by far the best and safest for your body in a whole. Women in their 3rd trimester of pregnancy, older individuals, and people with physical disabilities can take advantage of getting their cardio through swimming.
But, if you are able, running is absolutely incredible. It helps relieve stress and keep you in shape.
If you have a knee problem, biking is not the solution either because of the repetitive motions you are doing throughout the exercise. Again swimming would be the best for that individual.
For those who are afraid of injuring their knees, or want to prevent the “runners knee,” there are several exercises you can do to help with that, but you are still not completely immune.
Just make sure to keep yourselves hydrated well, and that you’re getting sufficient amounts of vitamins (especially B vitamins, & vitamin D), potassium, protein, fiber, whole grains and calories. Plus you should be getting yearly physicals. There, you will have the opportunity to talk to your doctor about your exercise regimen and to make sure you aren’t deficient in any vitamins or supplements.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I LOVE running in the winter time 🙂
December 10, 2008 7:50 pm at 7:50 pm #695134yoshiMember(Previously posted in NYC Marathon?)
Has anyone here ever run, or going to run the NYC marathon?
I’ve been training for it, and I’d really appreciate getting some feedback.
Previous runners:
Tell me about your training, and your whole experience in the marathon. Also, how long did you train for?
First time runners:
How’s your training coming along? What are you doing to prepare, and train yourself for the race? How many miles are you capable of running in a single run so far
December 10, 2008 9:01 pm at 9:01 pm #695135I can only tryMemberyoshi-
There are certain knee problems that biking can also aggravate.
Nevertheless, the fact that it is a more gentle circular motion, rather than the up-and-down pounding motion of running and jogging means many people who shouldn’t run can still bike.
This includes people with ankle, foot and hip issues as well as shin splints (microfractures) that may be unable to run, but can use a bike or Stairmaster.
I agree of course that good shoes will minimize the pounding and wear-and-tear / injuried that can occur if one is not properly prepared.
December 11, 2008 4:02 am at 4:02 am #695136asdfghjklParticipanti run for an hour & a half every morning, but i never figured out how many miles i run???
aprox how many miles do you think i run?? i run with nike sneakers btw, what abt you guys????
December 11, 2008 7:33 am at 7:33 am #695137AshreinuParticipantCurious – I hear you. I took to the streets, parks and trails when the under-used gym membership expired. It’s a whole lot more interesting outdoors, you get the greenery, sky and occasional sunrise and sunset. Once experienced, it’s tough to pass up and it’s really inspiring too. I found music a good motivator and ‘metronome’ but shiurim just take me someplace else. It totally takes the mind off the monotony and the biggest reason is that I feel like I’m REALLY gaining something by learning about real life and accomplishing something worthwile. I’ve gone running with some professional ‘marathoners’ like R’ Tatz, R’ Rietti, R’ Shafier (of The Shmuz), R’ Aryeh Pamensky (look him up, he’s really down-to-earth and practical), — ALL downloaded (mostly) FREE online. Just search their names, there’s lots of sources and sites… Adding new ones to my MP3 player are rewards and incentives. If I’m procrastinating a run, I’m motivated by the fact that I want to hear the rest of the shiur. I mean, that’s “running with your daas Torah,” to quote a previous poster (squeak?). Seriously, it’s a TOTAL workout – you get to excersize the mind, body and soul in one shot. So my speed:)
BY Maydel – I think being labeled “very frum” is the highest order of a compliment. Whats wrong with being called frum? Maybe I’ll start a thread about it, though I dread hearing people’s un-thinking comments about it…
