non poeters but writers…here we go with that thread. Anyone here do just some random writing?
October 23, 2011 4:13 am at 4:13 am #822909ZeesKiteParticipantRandom writing.. I think that describes me. My thoughts too!
October 23, 2011 7:09 am at 7:09 am #822910observanteenMemberblabla: That’s funny. I just thoughtof opening this type of thread but didn’t get to it… Thanks! Sorry, it’s too late to write now, but I probably will do in the near future. How about you? I’d love to see some of your writing!
October 23, 2011 12:16 pm at 12:16 pm #822911TheGoqParticipantbanana, turquoise, lampshade, distributor caps, Is that random enough? jk bla i’d love to read some of your writings.
October 23, 2011 1:02 pm at 1:02 pm #822912soliekMemberOOH! ME! I DO LOTS OF WRITING!
i write for fun…i write for my friends aunt’s college homework…i do NaNoWriMo…i love writing 🙂
October 23, 2011 5:51 pm at 5:51 pm #822913Queen BeeMemberYep, I write novels. Finished a few and am in middle of some others. I don’t think I’d be able to share them here. They’re not exactly…”kosher.” But I do plan on writing a “kosher” one soon.
October 24, 2011 2:27 am at 2:27 am #822914MiddlePathParticipantQB, I’d love to read your novels! Including the one about the NE in the WoW lore. But yea, I guess posting them here wouldn’t be ideal. Maybe there’s another way.
October 24, 2011 6:08 pm at 6:08 pm #822915Queen BeeMemberMP, are you really interested in my stuff? Well the NE story is in a notebook, so I’d have to type it all up… (and maybe do some rewrites!) But I don’t want to post any of my works online where anyone can steal them, so I don’t know what to do?
October 24, 2011 7:20 pm at 7:20 pm #822916MiddlePathParticipantQB, yes, I really enjoy reading so I’d definitely be interested. And I understand why you wouldn’t want them online, but I’d like to read them, and I’m sure others would also. Is there a way to put them up where only certain people can see them?
October 24, 2011 9:53 pm at 9:53 pm #822917GumBallMemberSupercalafrajalisticespialadociouse….
October 24, 2011 9:54 pm at 9:54 pm #822918Queen BeeMemberEven with a password protected site I’d feel hesitant because there are always hackers, and once something is online, it stays online forever. Also, I’d like to know exactly who is reading my works, and I don’t want to share them with too many people. So…any ideas how to do this?
October 24, 2011 10:30 pm at 10:30 pm #822919MiddlePathParticipantI understand. Hmm, not sure how it would work. Maybe to go through the email address on my music page? Or maybe some kind of blog? But that would mean it’s online and able to be seen..
October 25, 2011 1:16 am at 1:16 am #822920Queen BeeMemberIf you really are genuinely interested, then I guess email would be the only way…I just read over some of my things and I’m not sure they’re good enough to be read by anyone. I mean, it depends on your boundaries and stuff because some have Jewish characters, some don’t. Some are from guys’ point of views, which I love to write. You know, I can start a fresh with a frum story I’ve been wanting to write for a while and maybe send you chapter by chapter, and you could motivate me? Or I can type up the NE one, if you really want. I think it might be lame because I’m not a fantasy writer, nor am I an expert on the lore, so I’ll definitely mess up with that. I write YA (young adult)–are you interested in reading about teens? I have a frum one I started last year but gave up on because I felt it wasn’t working. Maybe you’d like that? It’s not really inappropriate, but it’d be banned by frum schools. Yeah, so what are your boundaries and what are you interested in?
October 25, 2011 1:37 am at 1:37 am #822921MiddlePathParticipantI’m actually not so into Jewish novels. I like reading in general though. Fiction, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Biographies, History, Science…just about anything. And email would be fine. I wouldn’t want to trouble you with typing up a whole story just for me to read it! Whatever you have already is fine. And only what you’re comfortable with. And I’m sure whatever you’ve written is within my boundaries 🙂
October 25, 2011 1:42 am at 1:42 am #822922bein_hasdorimParticipantGumBall; I cant believe you misspelled it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 25, 2011 2:42 am at 2:42 am #822923HealthParticipantQueen Bee -“They’re not exactly…”kosher.”
One of the first things my ex did on her way OTD was to write “non-kosher” material. The Torah says Aveirah Gorres Aveirah. The Yetzer Hora starts with small things and then he takes it all. I feel bad for you. You’re on a certain path and you don’t even realise what that path is.
October 25, 2011 6:29 pm at 6:29 pm #822925MiddlePathParticipantHealth, I’d like to say a few things.
First of all, I think it is wrong to judge people and assume they will “certainly” follow a path just because someone you know has done that. Everyone is different and everyone has different tolerances for things.
Secondly, we really don’t know exactly what QB meant by “Not exactly kosher”, and it could be very different from what your ex was writing. When I saw QB’s words of “Not exactly kosher”, I simply thought she meant that perhaps certain posters here would consider them inappropriate, but not everyone. Which I don’t consider very harmful.
I do understand that you probably feel very strongly about what you wrote since it must have been very hard for you when your ex was writing such material, and you just want to prevent such a scenario from happening again. But even so, I think you said it too harshly.
I’m not at all trying to be disrespectful! Please forgive me if it seems that I am. I just think your post can be hurtful, and I think you could have said what you were trying to say in a less-accusing way.
October 25, 2011 7:09 pm at 7:09 pm #822926HealthParticipantMP – In my opinion when a writer admits their writing isn’t Kosher -they usually mean it’s not clean. If they just thought that it’s just not appropriate for the ultra -Frum community, I think she would have just said that! You can usually tell by the way a person speaks/writes what they mean. I could be wrong, but that would be the exception, not the rule.
You personally don’t sound MO to me, maybe just more modern, not so Yeshivish.
The girl sounds very much from the MO crowd, which really most of them aren’t really Frum.
October 25, 2011 7:43 pm at 7:43 pm #822927MiddlePathParticipantHealth, I understand what you are saying. Perhaps QB’s case would indeed be the exception, but I would always be dan lekaf zechus for the exception, unless I know 100% otherwise.
And I am not sure why you felt the need to bring in anything about “MO” or your views of it, as I don’t see what it has to do with this discussion, and I think such labels in general only cause more harm and hurt than positiveness.
October 26, 2011 12:54 am at 12:54 am #822928Queen BeeMemberAdios.
October 26, 2011 1:27 am at 1:27 am #822929MiddlePathParticipantQB, I agree with you, and I’m sorry for the hurt you went through from some posters. Your’e perfectly entitled to be upset about it. I would too. And yes, I really can’t believe what was written in the post above my last post. I’m trying to see how it could be viewed in a non-hurtful way, but I can’t. I just hope that when you said “I’m out of here” you just meant out of this thread, and not the CR as a whole. I’d be sad if you left. I really enjoy reading your posts and I appreciate them because you’re a very unique person, very intelligent, and “out of the box”.
Please try to focus on the good posts here, and the posters who are helpful and kind, and not on the others. That’s what I’ve been trying to do, too, since I really wanted to leave at one point as well because of all the rude and disrespectful posts. Please stay.
October 26, 2011 2:10 am at 2:10 am #822930minyan galMemberQueen Bee, please do not go. We need your caliber of people around here. You are so intelligent and have so much to offer all (well nearly all) of us here in the CR. You offer so much support for so many people and your wide range of knowledge only makes me look for more of your posts. Certainly, Health was way out of line for the insults that he threw at you and your way of dealing with him was amazing. I am willing to be his “kicking post” if it means you will stay.
Okay Health, fire away. I am Conservative and I guess you know what goes with that title. It suits me just fine – I daven at shul 7 days a week and love it. Have I given you enough ammunition so that you will leave Queen alone and allow her to continue her wonderful contributions to this forum? BTW, I don’t write novels, but I do read them and many of them are also not what you would consider kosher.
October 26, 2011 3:02 am at 3:02 am #822931HealthParticipantNo, I wrote clearly what I think you have in your writings – Not clean material -Prustkeit.
Now why wouldn’t I agree with it? Because you use Harry and Sally, instead of Yankel and Sora or because it’s full of Pritzus?
If you were actually one of the exceptions -you would have just explained that. Actually your screaming proves my point -“Thou protests too loudly”!
October 26, 2011 3:31 am at 3:31 am #822933kapustaParticipantQB:
A few months ago I was very upset by a comment someone made (not directed at me) and I decided I didn’t want to be part of something or somewhere that would allow for a comment like that. Bpt wrote “That’s a reason to leave? On the contrary, that;s a reason to roll up your sleeves (not past the elbow, mind you) and come up with another plan of attack to get your point across.” and I decided that he was right. Sometimes people may do things that we don’t always like, but one person is only one person.
In all honesty, I don’t feel as strongly as Health on this but I would agree that “not-kosher” is probably better to stay away from (more on that later if you want). But thats not the point; people disagree sometimes but thats just a small part of a bigger picture. Please stay.
October 26, 2011 3:53 am at 3:53 am #822934MiddlePathParticipantminyal gal, that was very nice of you to say! I happen to think very highly of you as well, as you are always polite and always have something nice to say. And welcome back! I haven’t seen you around lately.
Health, I know this might be considered judging, but I knew you wouldn’t apologize to QB. I truly believe that people who always apologize don’t need to, and the people who need to apologize, never do. I hope you prove me wrong by apologizing. And please just read over all the posts here, starting from QB’s first one, until your last one, and think for a moment how your posts come across. You started out by insulting her. Your original post here could have been said much more politely, which would’ve saved much unpleasantness. Then take a look at your second post here. I don’t know what caused you to take the insulting to the next level, but it’s very apparent and seriously offensive. Judging someone to the level of calling her not Frum? Oh my. Then, rightly so, QB felt extremely hurt and “screamed”. Her screaming was justified. She did nothing wrong, and all you had were assumptions which led you to a terrible accusation. And now, in your last post, you use her “screaming” as a way of judging her negatively even more. I am honestly sick to my stomach that a person can go so far, judge so much, and do anything possible to keep themselves from just saying “I’m sorry”. I am ashamed I’m even bothering with a person like that.
I don’t feel good writing such a post, but it had to be said. And kapusta said something very true: It is only one person. QB, I hope you stay.
October 26, 2011 4:17 am at 4:17 am #822935Queen BeeMemberThanks MP, MG, and Kapusta. It’s people like you who make staying here worth it. Not sure I’ll post much, but I won’t disappear completely. Really, I appreciate your kind words. Also, Kapusta, you’re right, but there is a proper way how to address someone.
October 26, 2011 5:18 am at 5:18 am #822936Queen BeeMemberThanks, MP (again :)), but please don’t get upset over this. And MG, welcome back! I noticed you were away and I wondered where you were. You made an impression on me and I always look forward to reading your posts (and MP’s too, but I think he knows that). The same goes for my “triplet”, Kapusta.
October 26, 2011 7:14 am at 7:14 am #822937soliekMemberim not going to take a side here. all i WILL say is that i used to write exclusively for goyim. since i got one article (and only one) published in Ami i’ve written exclusively for yidden whether it gets published or not and i must say…it feels a lot better. i feel a lot better about everything i write and my work has actually improved greatly.
October 26, 2011 5:20 pm at 5:20 pm #822938HealthParticipantMP -Sorry to say I didn’t start out calling her not Frum -I just posted a warning. It was only after I was attacked -did I defend myself that way. You obviously can’t see it this way.
October 26, 2011 5:27 pm at 5:27 pm #822939HealthParticipantQB -“Would I write all those scenes you’d find in a romance novel? Of course not.”
Instead of blowing up at me when I just posted a warning -why didn’t you just post what you did now?
I was specifically clear from the git go what I thought non-Kosher means. If you have a different definition -you should have said so. All those posts that I wrote were based on that definition. So if it didn’t apply to you -why didn’t you simply say so? There is nothing to apologize for because my definition is the one I think most people would use.
October 26, 2011 5:42 pm at 5:42 pm #822940🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantHealth – sadly she wont be the first or only one you’ve sent running. I know I’ve asked you this before, as have others, but please think carefully before you post. Some of what you say can be very sharp and hurtful. I’ll assume you don’t mean to be and are not aware how you are received. Additionally, when someone steps in and asks you to be more considerate, that is far from an attack.

October 26, 2011 7:56 pm at 7:56 pm #822948MiddlePathParticipantOk. Let me just say to Health, I am sorry if it seemed like I was attacking you in any way.
October 26, 2011 7:57 pm at 7:57 pm #822949gavra_at_workParticipantAs a postscript (and I have posted this before), one of my friends is a Jewish author. You would not believe the hoops the author had to go through to discribe a “non romantic” relationship between two of the characters before they became frum. The publisher would not allow the use of the word “boyfriend” or “girlfriend”.
Personally, I think well of Jonathan & Faye Kellerman. I once read one of the Decker series books (that was what was there, and in a place where I couldn’t learn) and was quite impressed (although I can not vouch for cleanliness of any book for someone elses standards).
October 26, 2011 10:16 pm at 10:16 pm #822950Queen BeeMemberI didn’t want to come back to this thread, but I wanted to thank sam2 and Syag Lchochma. And gavra_at_work, there is another frum author–Rochelle Krich. She has a series where the main character is a frum detective. You might enjoy them :).
And thank you, mods, for stepping in before things got too out of hand.
October 26, 2011 11:03 pm at 11:03 pm #822951mustangriderMemberQueen Bee its amazing that you have written and completed novels! I too am a HUGE fan of writing (and reading) just about anything!
however, i, on the other hand, lack the motivation to complete a novel – though i have started a few :). generaly i stick to short stories, articles and music.
any advice for an amateur like me? 🙂
October 26, 2011 11:31 pm at 11:31 pm #822952observanteenMemberblabla: I’m sorry your thread turned into a battlefield;) I’ll try bringing this thread back on track.
I wrote this when feeling that I was working so hard to overcome the challenges of my life while everybody’s having an easy time.
My Reward
Beads of sweat formed on my brow. I panted heavily. My heart was racing wildly, but I didn’t give up. I continued running with unbreakable determination. I kept my eyes focused ahead of me, trying to outrun my competitors. There was still a long way to go. I felt like my energy was spent, but my feet seemed to take a life of their own.
I had to win this marathon. The ground grew hot and my sneakers itchy, but I ran on. I was driven by a hidden force. I was coming closer to my goal. But it was so hard.
Out of the corner of my eye, I watched the spectators on the bleachers. They were cheering wildly, laughing and eating to their hearts’ content. A wave of envy overcame me. here I was – huffing and puffing, while they were relaxing and having fun.
A salty tear made its way out of my eye. Why was I supposed to work so hard?
“It’s not fair,” I thought. I continued running half-heartedly. My thoughts were zooming to the rhythm of my running feet.
“What do they know of hard work?” I thought bitterly. “All they know is how to have a good time. They’ve got no idea what it’s like to run without a break.”
Suddenly, they bright yellow finish line winked at me from the distance. A wave of energy pumped through my veins. I ran for all I was worth.
Deafening applause thundered in my ears as I retrieved my gold trophy. I made it. I won. I beamed with pride. I glanced at the onlookers. A wide grin spread across my face.
No, they haven’t worked hard.
But they haven’t got a reward.
October 27, 2011 12:43 am at 12:43 am #822953Busy As A BeeParticipantQueen Bee I would also love to read some of your stuff.
My mother wrote a Jewish book (short stories) that was published and also wrote many short stories that were not Jewish for non Jewish magazines.
I personally write poetry but not the rhyming kind. And music but don’t have much time for that anymore.. 🙁
Middle Path how can I find your music page?
October 27, 2011 12:50 am at 12:50 am #822954Queen BeeMembermustangrider, I know how hard it is to find the discipline to sit down and write. I read somewhere that a writer should try to write at least for an hour a day. It doesn’t have to be actual work on the novel, but anything. Even something personal, just to get you into the writing. For me personally, sometimes I have no motivation to sit down at my computer and continue writing, but once I sit down, put on my headphones and crank up my music, I get into it and at times end up writing for three hours straight! What helps a lot is having someone read each chapter as you write it. For me, my sister reads my work as soon as I finish writing. It’s such a great motivation. Maybe you can find a family member or friend whom you trust to show your work to? It would be really great if there was an online Jewish writing forum where frum writers can critique each other’s work and motivate them. It’s the opposite for me: I can’t write short stories. Not that my novels are over 100k words. They’re ususally around 45-50k.
Busy as a bee, that’s really cool about your mother! Can I ask you something? For the secular writing, how censored was she? About seeing my work: I might post here. I’m not sure. I don’t really like my writing being so public where anyone (and certain people who really don’t deserve to see my writing) could see. Unless someone shows me a website or something where I can post privately or something…but thanks for your interest 🙂
observanteen, really good! You wrote so much in such a short piece. I really love this line: “the bright yellow finish line winked at me from the distance.” And you gave such a great message!
October 27, 2011 1:06 am at 1:06 am #822955Busy As A BeeParticipantWell considering she usually wrote about us in a slightly twisted fashion (Names and situations changed but general ideas were built off of her kids and family, as they say write what you know.) I’d say it was all clean but I dont know for sure. I can find out…
October 27, 2011 1:26 am at 1:26 am #822956mustangriderMemberThanks for the advice Queen Bee! but my problem is that i dont let ANYONE see my work until i am absolutly certain that i polished it completely – and by that time i went over my work so many times that i end up getting bored and sick of it so i just move on to a NEW piece instead of continuing the old one! i guess you are right though, if i get a friend to read my work polished chapter by polished chapter then that friend will probably push me to continue the story to know how it ends if nothing else 🙂 and yeah i also wish there was some sort of Jewish online writing club…
October 27, 2011 1:49 am at 1:49 am #822957soliekMemberNaNoWriMo…im jussayin…
October 27, 2011 3:51 am at 3:51 am #822958Queen BeeMemberWriters told me not to rewrite/revise/polish anything until you’ve finished the first draft. You’ll drive yourself crazy. They also advised not to read anything you wrote over. Personally, I always read my stuff over, because I love my characters too much. Usually when I’m halfway done, or wrote a lot, I print it out to read over shabbos.
If you’re getting bored, it’s not a bad idea to move on to another story. Some stories click more than others. I sometimes write 2 or 3 novels at one time because my head is filled with ideas. Or you can always think of twists and give your characters obstacles to overcome. Also, if you feel like your story is dragging and you want to get to a better scene, skip the scene you’re struggling with and move on. You can get back to it later. Lots of writers don’t write in order (I do, because I need order, but everyone writes the way they write. There are no rules–just grammar and stuff…).
Hope that helps. Good luck!
October 27, 2011 4:01 am at 4:01 am #822959MiddlePathParticipantobservanteen, wow, that passage you wrote titled “My Reward” is really good!! Very uplifting, especially for me, because I’ve always felt the same way. You really have a lot of talent!
busy as a bee, I’d love to read some of your poetry, and that’s cool that you write music! Do you have any music you can post somewhere for people to listen to? About my own music, you can find it at a website called Soundcloud.
mustangrider, I know what you mean about having to keep perfecting something over and over until you get bored of it. I used to have the same problem with my music! I could never finish writing a song because I’d always feel I could add something, and then I’d eventually just drop it. But I’ve learned to see the importance of keeping things simple. To me, a well-written, easy to read and concise book is far more enjoyable than a complex, confusing jumble of difficult metaphors and obscure jargon. I don’t know if this helps, but it’s something to consider, I think :).
Also, QB’s advice is really great, too! I’d listen to her advice before mine, as she is already a talented and accomplished author whereas I’m simply a reader. And welcome back here! Seems like you’ve been away for a bit..Or maybe it just felt like a long time because I’m always looking forward to your posts.
QB, back to your stories and novels, I really would love to read them! But I see we’re still stuck on how to do it..
October 27, 2011 5:14 am at 5:14 am #822960soliekMembersomeone said something earlier about the authour controlling the novel…i dont find that to be true. when i write a story i have absolutely no idea whats gonna happen next. the characters “tell me” what they want to do and i sort of just enable them to do what they want. plots write themselves…i feel like a mere conduit for the expression of the story. i have very little control over what i write and i find that when i try to exercise control over my characters they rebel and the story just flops.
as far as perfection goes…writing cant be forced. it needs to be OF you. it needs to be an absolute expression of what you are feeling at the moment. your passion. your ideals. your excitement. grammar be darned! whatever you feel, just vomit it all down on paper or Word or whatever youre writing with. you can sort it all out later. NEVER waste time on grammar when youre writing the original manuscript. the most important thing is to let your story be written; editing comes afterward. remember…the story is the iddur, the grammar is the taful. always edit later.
as for being ashamed of showing other people your work…i understand. it took me a while until i felt comfortable showing rough drafts to my friends but now im fine with it. i even ask them for help proofreading, and offering opinions about what ive written. i understand why youre uncomfortable. writers pour themselves…every ounce of themselves into their writing and its hard to open that up to others unless you feel its perfect. just find someone you trust implicitly and share with them. it will get easier to share with others.
