Public universities are cheaper and better, but presumably if you consider Touro you have ruled out going to a university with goyim. This leaves Yeshiva College/Stern as an option. For a woman, there are some all-female colleges, but they are expensive. There is the option of distance education but that is a problem in some subjects (e.g. becoming a health care professional).

for a girl its probably more kdai to work part time and take classes in community college. that way its way cheaper, your making money, you get some feel for what you want to do before you start spending the big money, and as long as you keep up good grades you automatically are accepted into that states public college (not always true but talk to a student advisor because in some cases it is)
November 5, 2013 2:17 pm at 2:17 pm #985380jbaldy22MemberWhile touro does have a low reputation it is still significantly better than FDU or having a BTL. I have lots of friends who got into great masters programs and law schools and got great jobs off of touro degrees.

FDU – that’s Fairleigh Dickinson University , which has a fairly decent reputation for academics (and also for “Greek” life, which can be an issue). It’s also expensive (similar to Touro) but may be more liberal with financial aid.
If the person wants to avoid members of the opposite sex while getting an undergraduate degree, that suggest distance education. They are more acceptable than a BTL, cheaper as a rule, and avoid many of the shailohs. The fact that someone is looking for alternatives to Touro, suggests they want a single sex school with no goyim, since they are ruling out the obvious (public universities). While there are goyim in distance education, they are online (and often in different countries) so there is less of an issue.
November 5, 2013 4:04 pm at 4:04 pm #985382jbaldy22MemberThe director of admissions at Fordham Law hates FDU. And he isn’t the only one. Prospective students from Touro did a lot better getting in to good law schools and masters programs than did FDU students with similar GPAs. I have a friend who had a 175 and a 4.0 GPA from FDU and did not get into Columbia or NYU and had to push Fordham to give him a small scholarship. FDU sounds great on paper but their track record is not as good as Touro’s. For most frum jews the level of academic standards is not as important as what you can do with the degree and based on what is admittedly somewhat anecdotal evidence it seems that FDU is lacking in that department.
November 5, 2013 4:19 pm at 4:19 pm #985383Torah613TorahParticipantTouro is much cheaper than Stern and you get pretty much the same education. I believe they will be competitive with Stern in every way 10 years from now.
I am aware of 4 Touro schools and they all have gyms.
Frumkeit and sensitivity wise, Touro is also better, as a general rule.
November 6, 2013 1:39 am at 1:39 am #985384writersoulParticipantTorah: USNWR rankings (point out their failings all you want, they’re still the highest regarded college ranker) put YU at #47 in the country and Touro at about #120 in the northeast. Of course, both of those are the cumulative rankings of all of their schools which can skew it somewhat but Stern is still academically farther up.
FTR I’m seriously considering both. I’m actually leaning in favor of Stern just because of my career plans. I think each has its own place.

I agree that it depends on career plans. For a STEM field I’d say Stern. Touro has a long way to go in terms of scientific research and internship availability. For psychology/history/English/Judaic studies Touro is the same or better.
