For some reason the “alter heim” is being brought up in every thread even when it doesn’t apply. It’s like saying we can’t eat bagels and cream cheese because they didn’t have it in the alter heim. What does one thing have to do with the other? Alter heim has nothing to do with cell phones, imho atleast.
Could be I make no sense here but I just feel like the alter heim is being brought up everywhere, and yes they didn’t do many things in the alter heim (cell phones, sheitels like they are today) because they didn’t have that. There is no reason to bring it up in every thread.

Why does the alter heim need to be brought up in many threads even when it doesn’t connect to the topic at hand? (for example- cell phones)
Just wondering…
January 24, 2011 12:56 am at 12:56 am #731226deiyezoogerMemberIt’s brought up by someone who is trying to act like a bubby not relizing that does who remember the “alter heim” know how to kasher chikens not how to post on YWN.
January 24, 2011 1:12 am at 1:12 am #731227oomisParticipantThere are many things they did not have in the Alter Heim. Freedom of religion, girls learning in Yeshivah, secular education for all, world-wide dissemination of Torah for all people who wanted to learn, etc…
No one can deny that GIANTS of Torah came from there, but life there was not idyllic, and more Torah is learned by MORE people on a regular basis nowadays, than ever was in the Alter Heim.
January 24, 2011 1:38 am at 1:38 am #731228deiyezoogerMemberThe “alter heim” when not romantisized was a very misserble place with extream poverty, severe chilhood illness, pograms, Haskalah, all the “isems” and most people were not able to learn a blat gamarah on their own. Yes they where more “temimos’dig”, they where simple G-d fearing erlicha yiden but the all in all, the total picture was not better then today.

Alter heim = our old home, meaning pre WWII Europe.

I still follow the football team from the Alter Heim, and they just finished the Jets off!!!
January 24, 2011 4:53 am at 4:53 am #731234smartcookieMemberIt’s just someone’s act trying to make believe he’s a Bubby. He therefore mentions the alte Heim in every thread.

January 24, 2011 9:39 pm at 9:39 pm #731237twistedParticipantI worked with adult ED and low functioning individuals once upon a time, and among them were some quasi idiot-savants with interesting thought talents. The commonality among them is that every single conversation started with the same opening. I also learned in a place where a homeless person, (the very essence of individuality) used to visit, and he apparently had verbatim recall of a certain acharon. He would sit silently in a noisy shiur, until he would chirp up ‘But the X (acharon) says….
So to me, the IN THE ALTER HEIM opener has a certain nostalgic charm to it.
