BH: You need to differentiate between guys and gals, as it is completely different between the two.
October 24, 2011 8:59 pm at 8:59 pm #819965Disrael613MemberFor me it was a chance to separate from my family and become my own person. It was also my first to chance to develop a group of close Jewish friends. Also there are less distractions its more normal to be learning in EY. The air has something special in it that drew me in from the first. Before I went to EY for the year, I had no plans of living in EY and now I hope to live in EY with my family one day. I also got one and one attention from some of my teachers.
But I never learned in a Jewish school in the states so I cannot compare the two. Good luck with your decision.
October 24, 2011 10:27 pm at 10:27 pm #819966NechomahParticipantI had a similar experience like D613, no learning in US, but lots of really intense (8 am – 10 pm with breaks for lunch/dinner/rest) 5 1/2 days a week. Really amazing stuff. Never, never, never thought about living in Israel before coming here for a month, went back to US to deal with some issues before coming back to learn some more and ended up deciding to stay. My only comparison was LA, which did not have a big frum area and I didn’t think I had a great chance of finding a shidduch there, so on staying in EY, found that the challenges in chinuch that are faced on a daily basis in US (advertising, billboards, TV) are not at all issues here, so for my future children’s sakes, I decided to stay here. No comparison for me, but probably hard to compare with Lakewood/Monsey had I come from there. I think the lack of distractions at home make learning in EY so intense.

It was hard to be apart from my family, but I love it and wouldn’t have changed things for a minute. I’ve been blessed with 6 beautiful children, bli ayin hara, and the challenges I face daily make me shudder to think about what else I would be having to deal with in other locations.

October 25, 2011 4:00 pm at 4:00 pm #819970cinderellaParticipantThe shechinah in Eretz Yisroel is tangible. There is no other place in the world where you can feel that. Being surrounded by that aura of holiness spurs your spiritual and emotional growth so you can make the transition from dependent high schooler to a mature an independent adult.
October 25, 2011 4:25 pm at 4:25 pm #819971BaalHaboozeParticipantcinderella- who nowadays REALLY feels the shechina when there in E”Y?? I can recall my first time I went to the Kosel- VERY disappointing! I went up and touched the stones and said some tehillim, ready and waiting for that kedusha and special warmth of the shechina to hit me, engulf me, and envelope me….
nothing.
Don’t get me wrong it is a holy place and yes the air special, but the shechina TANGIBLE??!
maybe for you, maybe, but apparently not for everyone. not me, at least.
