Here is my problem: I LOVE coke. The minute I’m tired/lacking energy – i always fancy a freezing coke.

It’s not like a craving – coz i CAN control myself, but it gives me tons of energy.

How bad is this for me?

If i let myself – how soon will it be an addiction?

how many cans can i drink a day? How unhealthy is coke?

Think of the calories!!! Not to mention the added sugar. The high fructose corn syrup used in soft drinks these days is far more potent that regular cane or beet sugars. I urge you to drink diet coke. But that too has its risks. The calcium oxylate can give you kidney stones.

If you drink this for tons of energy, then you most likely need to exercise. Keeping your body in shape by excercising keeps your muscles strong. Strong muscles gives you energy. Try lifing weights every other day. Also use ankle weights. Try doing 10 of one movement, then 10 of another, etc. By keeping your muscles strong you won’t have a problem with lack of energy. Then you won’t need Coke.

Coffeeroomfan: Considering the fact that you were the one who started the “Losing weight after Giving Birth- URGENT!!” thread, I must tell you that Coke (and really any soda) is FATTENING! Think of it as candy in a can. It is empty calories with caffiene, and also bad for your teeth! If you need extra energy take some CoQ10 – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. (Don’t take it at night, it will keep you up) Of course, since you just had a baby and may be nursing, I would check with my ob-gyn first. But drinking water is really the best thing for you.

That’s my advice, take it or leave it 😉

coke has a lot of phosphorus in it. in your body, the relationship between phosphorus and calcium is that the more phosphorus you have, the less calcium (think of it as if it almost takes all the calcium for itself). so i’d make sure i’m getting enough calcium in my diet if youre going to drink a lot of that stuff.

nurse, doesn’t coffee work something like that too?

    OH! I get it 😉

I really think the caffeine restricts calcium from entering the bloodstream.

NY Mom : i hear what u r saying , but if b4 i became pregnant i was size 6, drank coke all day, and still stayed size 6. i.e didn’t put on wight from drinking coke, am i not loosing weight b/c of the coke now? has my entire metabolism changed?

I thought adding milk to your coffee was because primative coffee drinkers did not know how to properly roast and brew the beans, causing an exceptionally acidic taste. The pH properties of milk (high base) helped to neutralize it.

With the high quality roasts that came free with CR membership, I find that milk detracts from the flavor, so I avoid it.

So as to stay on topic, I’ll add this: Soda is like candy. Drink it as a treat, not a beverage.

It becomes an addiction when using your usual dose of whatever you enjoy stops doing the trick for you, and you have to increase the intake to get the feeling you desire. Caffeine is addictive, and your body will tell you that one cup is nothing, feed me more!

coffeeroomfan: I can not tell you for sure in your specific case, but in my experience – yes, a person’s metabolism changes after having a baby. And each pregnancy is a new story.

I’m not sure how long ago you gave birth. If your baby is still an infant, then you still have the raging hormones and in a couple of months, you might be able to go back to your old way of eating (and drinking Coke) with no problem. But as of now, when you are trying to lose weight, cutting out the soda is an easy way to cut your calorie intake.

I give you a brocha: You should go back to your size 6 quickly and easily! Oh – and you should be written for a good gebentched yor!

ames – perhaps “beverage” isn’t a precise word because it means any drink other than water. But the message I was conveying was that soda should not be thought of as flavored water, as we think of coffee, tea, lemonade, etc. Soda should not be used to slake thirst because it is unhealthful. Instead, think of it as a liquid candy bar, as NY Mom suggested.

I used to be very addicted to Coke. I stopped about 2 years ago around Yom Kippur. Rabbi Shafier gave a Shmuz about preparing for Yom Kippur and mentioned that there were some people who used to stop drinking caffeine weeks before in order that they wouldn’t get a headache on Yom Kippur so that they can daven properly. I realized that I was never able to function well on fast days and even other days of the year, if I didn’t have caffeine in the morning I would get a headache so I was dependent on it so I stopped. I still drink a lot of Sprite and other non-caffeinated sodas but not as much as I used to drink Coke and I drink a lot more water now. It’s great on fast days when I don’t get headaches anymore and even on other days I used to have to have some at some point in the morning or I would get a headache. Whether or not I am healthier now it is certainly less of a burden to not “have to” have caffeine in the morning

    Thanks, ames.

You say that vitamin water is healthy? I thought otherwise, but I could be wrong – I frequently am. Let’s examine the facts:

    🙂

    1) Contains electrolytes, Vitamins B3 B5 B6 B12 C and sometimes E.

    2) Most americans are not vitamin deficient

    3) Many vitamin water brands contain caffeine

    4) Contains more than half as many calories as soda, serving for serving

    5) Contains 25-30 grams of sugar, generally in the form of HFCS

    6) HFCS is generally regarded as less healthful than natural sugar

    7) Any drink with that much sugar contains acid to neitralize the over-sweetness (some of the acid in V-H2O is the Vitamin C)

    8) Dentists claim that acid is bad for your teeth

These are real facts, so we can draw our own conclusions. But IMHO, anything that tastes like jello is probably not going to improve your health. And if you want vitamins, dissolve a multi vitamin in a glass of water 🙂

NY Mom, add to the bracha, “and in a healthy way”

as for soda, I think water is really the only thing that can quench thirst. From all sodas, coke is probably one of the worst, if not THE worst. I remember someone once mentioned that she knew someone who gave up soda (sugar) for a year and lost 10 pounds. At the end of they day, the gain will probably far outweigh the loss. Keep in mind they use coke to clean up after accidents and to clean rust off metal. Is that what you really want to be drinking? Or think of the way orange soda never comes out of clothing or a tablecloth. Is that what you want your insides to look like?

Ames: I hate to inform you of this, but…I heard that diet sodas do not help in weight loss. The reason is: when you consume something that is sweet, whether it has calories or not, your body will react with an increase in insulin. The increase in insulin causes you to be hungry, and when on a diet, the last thing you want is an increase of appetite.

Perhaps one of the other very educated/informed posters will disagree, and I may be wrong, but this is what I heard.

So bottom line is that Kapusta is right. Stick to ice water or I like seltzer.

So is diet soda a healthy alternative? I stay away from artificial sweeteners because I thought any day now they will come out with a new study saying something like, “Yes, you’ve been drinking/eating it all these years, but research now shows it could kill you.”

So Dr. Feivel, what is your take on Nutrisweet, Splenda, and saccharine?

So Dr. Feivel, what is your take on Nutrisweet, Splenda, and saccharine?

    i really dont know

but i dont think anyone knows

i have a feeling that splenda is the most likely to be safe because it is basically a string of glucose molecules making one long molecule that doesnt get absorbed well but still activates the tongue glucose receptors. but then again it has a few chlorine atoms which may or may not get broken off the chain and released.

    i dont know

    i personally stick with splenda

there is another naturally occurring alternative called STEVIA. i havent researched it but i suspect it is definitely going to be the way to go. its available already in some stores.

It is not a myth that soda is bad for your teeth. My dentist told me that if you are going to drink soda, it is better to drink it through a straw, because then it will by-pass your teeth.

And Kapusta: I think that you are right and Coke originally had cocaine in it.

mepal, I don’t see how that can happen. She’s drinking lots of coke slurpies right? Well, every expectant mom that I have ever met who had so much as one coke slurpee within the 9 months gave birth to a baby with no teeth. They did eventually grow teeth, but it took a coupla years.

Did anyone hear the story of the guy who sued coca cola because he found a mouse in the soda bottle? He lost the case when the company proved conclusively that if such an event had happened (a mouse falling into the brew) there would be no evidence by the time the bottle got onto the shelf.

You can snopes this one, but I think it has a higher truth rating than the cocaine legend.
