Hello everyone. I’m 73 years old, and all that my husband and I had in our home after our children moved out (12 years years now) was Cupcake, our cat. She passed away yesterday, and I want very much to make a funeral befittingly (all our neighbors were very fond of her as well).
We already contacted Cupcake’s beauty parlor who will be making the funeral arrangements.
I would very much like her to be buried in our backyard, the place she loved most, but my husband refuses.
I just don’t want to do anything that may dishonor her memory.
I usually never ask for advice, but any thoughts?

April 17, 2013 1:32 am at 1:32 am #947228VogueMemberIf it was signed with her paw that had some sort of stamp thing on it, then the will is hallachically accepted by my standards, and by a typical bais din’s standards.
April 17, 2013 2:23 am at 2:23 am #947229TheGoqParticipantFirst of all i am very sorry for your loss may you be comforted by the memory of the years of companionship cupcake gave you, i see nothing wrong with interring cupcake in the backyard, what is your husbands objection? you can reassure him that when the time comes he will not end up there as well.

April 17, 2013 2:50 am at 2:50 am #947232playtimeMemberOur Rabbi ruled not to observe Shiva, and that we may play her favorite music during the procession.

Presumably, you would be allowed to keep the dinim of shloshim, such as not shaving or taking haircuts, until Shavuot terminates the shloshim.
April 18, 2013 1:20 am at 1:20 am #947234playtimeMemberher favorite music was A Capella
April 18, 2013 1:33 am at 1:33 am #947235rebdonielMemberWhy would you donate to a shul on behalf of a dead cat?
Is this serious? Assuming so, I offer you condolences. Losing a pet is sad, but in time, you’ll find another cat to make happy.
Perhaps in Cupcake’s memory, consider adopting a cat from a shelter or donating to the ASPCA or another worthy cause.
April 18, 2013 1:41 am at 1:41 am #947236squeakParticipantA Capella is assur during sefirah. Your Rabbi probably meant you could play some nice non-jewish music. That’s not assur during sefirah because ain issur chal al issur.

“Losing a pet is sad, but in time, you’ll find another cat to make happy.”
Cupcake was no ordinary cat; she was special.
I also feel that a donation to the synagogue is very apropos. I feel like she belonged to the whole community (they were all very fond of her) and I anticipate the erection ceremony of her plaque in the synagogue.
Squeak- I do not understand. Can you simplify for me?
April 18, 2013 2:09 am at 2:09 am #947238yaakov doeParticipantPlease notify all of us when and where the plaque will be installed so that we can all attend the ceremony
April 18, 2013 2:35 am at 2:35 am #947239squeakParticipantSimplify? Sure. I let you have your fun and you let me have mine.

April 21, 2013 3:23 am at 3:23 am #947241Torah613TorahParticipantWhy did you name her Cupcake?
April 21, 2013 3:38 am at 3:38 am #947242playtimeMemberBecause my husband and I are very fond of cupcakes.
April 21, 2013 3:41 am at 3:41 am #947243Torah613TorahParticipantIn honor of Cupcake, I may make cupcakes tomorrow.

I’m sure she’d prefer to donate on behalf of a live cat, but it’s too late for that – cupcake’s been iced.
