There were B”H many Simchas in 2011….. However, Let’s remember how more then ever, after suffering such enormous tragedies this past year, we are in need of Rachmei Shomayim.

Let’s take a moment to recap on this years tragedies, and let us pour out our hearts for Rachamim.

Sure, but “vus epes yetst”? Most CR-ites here go with the Jewish calendar. ????? ??? ???, so grouping events by “2011” should have little significance. Anyone disagree?

I agree, now is NOT the time of year that we reflect on the year’s tragedies, basically OUR year has just begun.

Is the purpose of the thread so that we should share all our personal tragedies here? I won’t do it. You can’t make me!

jan 1 actually symbolizes nothing and the year 2011 also symbolizes nothing

According to the NT he was born in the spring around passover time during the reign of Herod. Herod died in the year 4 BCE

So he was not born on December 25, Did not have a Bris on Jan 1 and was not born in the year 1

I have a brother who was born on December 25th and had his bris on Jan 1st! And he was a firstborn to someone with a brother named Joseph. And whenever he would come in the house and leave the door open, my mother would say, “Were you born in a barn?”

Jan. 1 actually does symbolize something. It’s Rosh Hashana l’umos. Distantly related (lehavdil) to the 4 Rosh Hashanas mentioned in talmud, again – distantly. But I believe seforim do talk about it’s minute significance.

ZK: Do you care to elaborate on what any sefer says about Rosh Hashana l’umos. I know the gemara talks about rosh hashana l’mlachim for goyim as distinct from Rosh Hashana for malchei Yisroel. However, it pegs those 2 dates as 1 Tishrei vs. 1 Nissan. But January 1? I am not aware of any such thing!

The “Otzar Dinim u’Minhagim of Eisenstein explains the history and use of the secular year and why it is permitted, though he does not specifically mention the date of Jan. 1. See page 240, under “Minyan Hashanim”.

In regards to the OP, it should be noted that tragedies occur and always have. Relatively speaking, we the Jews have never had it as good as we do now. It is cause for thanks, and not for anguish.
