January 23, 2013 8:32 pm at 8:32 pm #937439dotnetterMemberAccording to your logic, a computer is a mineral too. And so is the car you drive. And wait, don’t forget all the jewelery you wear and quarters, nickles, dimes and pennies too.
No, metal boots are not a mineral. They are made of metal which is a mineral but they are…..Boots!
January 23, 2013 9:36 pm at 9:36 pm #937440OneOfManyParticipantfrummy got it. ^_^
mnidj, the answer is wellies/galoshes. But I wear mine in the snow too, so I guess are right! ^_^
January 23, 2013 9:42 pm at 9:42 pm #937441OneOfManyParticipantWho’s up next?
January 23, 2013 9:55 pm at 9:55 pm #937442frummy in the tummyParticipantdotnetter – If what other people are saying is true, that the first question in the (card?) game is animal, vegetable, or mineral, then I would venture to say that the question is referring to the source of the materials, in which case all the things you mentioned WOULD be minerals.
January 24, 2013 3:14 pm at 3:14 pm #937443dotnetterMemberFrummy – I hear what you’re saying but I’m not sold. Does that make a leather boot an animal?
Btw, it’s an electronic game.
January 24, 2013 8:31 pm at 8:31 pm #937444OneOfManyParticipantIt originated as a word game played by mouth decades before the electronic adaptation. And the “animal, vegetable, mineral” thing almost never works out literally. That’s just how the game is played.
January 24, 2013 9:12 pm at 9:12 pm #937445ShowjoeMemberum.. so anyone starting a new game?
January 24, 2013 11:47 pm at 11:47 pm #937446frummy in the tummyParticipantOOM – Yeah, I actually learned the game when I played as walking home from shul friday night with my dad. Good memories.
But using the “animal, vegetable, mineral” question as a starting point may have originated with the electronic version (thanks for the correction about what kind of game it is); I would imagine (but it doesn’t have to be so) that it is meant to be all-inclusive of any physical item, i.e. that every item is one of animal, vegetable, or mineral. So dotnetter, that would make a leather boot animal, anything metal, wood, or even plastic would be mineral, barley soup would be vegetable, etc. – hey, waiter! I ordered barley, not vegetable!
dotnetter, want to think of one?
January 25, 2013 12:17 am at 12:17 am #937447OneOfManyParticipantlol, I used to play this game with my cousin at sedorim and seudos when the grown ups were having Grown Up Talk. ^_^
Also, the “animal, vegetable, mineral” bit is I think as old as the game itself. I think so because the phraseology is kind of dated…but anyway, check the wiki article on Twenty Questions. It seems to confirm this.
January 25, 2013 1:11 am at 1:11 am #937448I can only tryMemberI remember the “animal, vegetable or mineral” question from games played… sometime last century.
I’ll host a turn.
