Why don’t Ashkenazim say Baruch Hu ubaruch Shemo when someone is making Birkot Hatorah in an Aliyah?
May 13, 2019 8:30 am at 8:30 am #1726113Reb EliezerParticipantI say it.
May 13, 2019 1:12 pm at 1:12 pm #1726312Yabia OmerParticipantInteresting. Whenever I have been to an Ashkenaz shul, they’ll say Amen but not BHUBS.
May 13, 2019 3:06 pm at 3:06 pm #1726398one man bandParticipantAshkenazim also don’t say BHUB in magen avos on Shabbos. why not?
May 13, 2019 4:55 pm at 4:55 pm #17264791man: Ashkenazim also don’t say BHUB in magen avos on Shabbos… because it is a hefsek and one must not speak out till after kaddish tiskabel/kaddish sholem as stated in Sh.A.
Likewise one cannot answer it during psukei d’zimra because it is not a “complete” obligation – per Igros Moshe O.Ch 2, s. 98; Yabia Omer vol 2, s. .
May 13, 2019 4:56 pm at 4:56 pm #1726491iacisrmmaParticipantWe dont say it on shabbos since we want to count them as part of our 100 brochos (Mishna Berurah 46:14)
and when you are being yotzer with someone elses brocha you dont say BHUBS.http://hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=14170&st=&pgnum=147
May 13, 2019 5:12 pm at 5:12 pm #1726498Yabia OmerParticipantBut how can an oleh’s Birkot Hatorah count for you? What is being motzi you for? It’s his Aliyah.
May 13, 2019 6:17 pm at 6:17 pm #1726500The Gra did not recite ברוך הוא וברוך שמו because it may prevent answering amen (Maaseh Rav, 43) or because he considered it to be a hefsek (Tosefes Maaseh Rav).
The Shu”T Rosh (4, s. 19) states that his father said ברוך הוא וברוך שמ at each brocha he heard:
http://hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=1961&st=&pgnum=30The Torah Temima (Devorim ch 32, s”k 36) cites the Chareidim that relies on a medrash that requires saying ברוך הוא וברוך שמו at each brocha, leaving him wondering what Ashkenazim rely on to omit saying it, then cites the GRA. (see 4 lines from bottom of page):

May 13, 2019 6:20 pm at 6:20 pm #1726515Firstly and formost, he is being motzee you with the 100 brochos. Second and just as important, don’t you give him a yasher koach or Chazak uBaruch for “doing” the aliyah? – fufilling for you your chiyuv of the kriyah (which Reb Moshe paskens is on the YOCHID, in contrast to posters here that take positions contrary to the posek haDor)..
May 13, 2019 8:10 pm at 8:10 pm #1726531CA – no, it’s about ברכה הצלחה וברוך שפטרני
May 13, 2019 8:12 pm at 8:12 pm #1726536Reb EliezerParticipantIt says that the oleh should not say chazak chazak until he says the last brocho.
May 13, 2019 8:13 pm at 8:13 pm #1726539Reb EliezerParticipantIt can be a chiyuv on the tzibur and still a chiyuv on the oleh but not a chyuv on others if ten people listen.
May 13, 2019 8:13 pm at 8:13 pm #1726540Reb EliezerParticipantThe same way as we praise a tzadik when we mention his name, we must praise Hashem. The Sefer Chasidim says that for this reason we should not say Hashem but Hashem Yisborach.
May 13, 2019 8:30 pm at 8:30 pm #1726563Yabia OmerParticipantExcuse me but someone who goes up for an Aliyah is not fulfilling any Mitzvah or Bracha for anyone but himself. And I give a Chazak Ubaruch for meriting an Aliyah, not for being motzi me in anything.
May 13, 2019 11:39 pm at 11:39 pm #1726397The GRA was against it. Talmidei HaGRA do not say it at all. It creates a hefsek in listening to the uninterrupted bracha. With the brochas that we hear we are yotzeh various things (like making 100 brochas a day). BTW, even Sefardim do not say BH uBSH when they hear someone make a brocha shehakol or mezonos on food, which does not follow their shitah! (As per Shulchan Aruch OC 124:5 they SHOULD say it!)
May 13, 2019 11:40 pm at 11:40 pm #1726572Reb EliezerParticipantcoffee addict, because of anivus of Beis Hillel they allowed Beis Shamai first in order to hear an opposite view before they decide on their view to arrive to the truth, so it could not be Beis Hillel and Beis Shamai because Beis Shamai would have come first.
May 13, 2019 11:40 pm at 11:40 pm #1726577ZionGateParticipantChazak Ubaruch for meriting the Aliyah makes sense.
The Ashkenazic Shkoyach which connotes “thank you ” is presumably for the Mi Shebeirach when the Oleh mentions and blesses another congregant’s name. The original Yasher Kochacho which morphed into Shkoyach is similar to your Chazak . Maybe that’s how it happened.May 13, 2019 11:40 pm at 11:40 pm #1726599Chill pill. The oleh said borchu which allowed you to sanctify Hashem’s name. He then made a brocha to which you were enabled to answered amen. Chazal say Godol ha’ona amen yoser me’hamevorech (your amen is greater than his brocha – but you were enabled by h uhh s brocha). Then because he made the brocha, you heard words of Torah. ..does the Oleh not deserve a great big yasher koach?! Look how much he did for you!
