Maran Rav Shteinman Atttends Chanukah Mesiba at Yissacher B’ Ohalecha in Bnei Brak

If there is one concern in today’s world which is constantly on the mind of the Gadol Hador, it is the welfare of the yungerleit in Eretz Yisroel. Therefore when the venerable sage Maran HaRav Steinman shlit”a  expressed his interest in attending a Chanukah mesiba for the nation’s premier network of Kolelim, nobody at Yissacher B’Ohalecha was surprised. In fact they had assumed that the Rosh Yeshiva would make the effort to participate and that is why they had already booked the largest hall in Bnei Brak for their annual Chanukah event. Problem was that the hall couldn’t accommodate even half of Yissacher B’Ohalecha’s vast student body divided among 34 Kollelim which are spread out across the land covering the area from Carmiel out north in the Upper Galil and stretches down south until Netivot in the Negev. And so it was decided to limit attendance  to those branches which are within an hour’s travel time to the hall. And when the Rosh Yeshiva actually did  arrive the simcha was so genuine and  overwhelming  to the point of being almost  tangible. After opening remarks were delivered by prominent  Rabbonim, Rav Elchanan Weisbord, Chief Executive Officer of Kollel Yissacher B’Ohalecha, stepped up to the microphone and said a short prayer that the Kollel may continue to enjoy its special privilege to be under the direct leadership of the Manhig HaDor, Maran Rav Aharon Leib shlit”a, who is the Nasi of the Kollelim. Rav Weisbord then proceeded to ask the Rosh Yeshiva for a bracha for the yungerleit. The Rosh Yeshiva blessed the yungerleit and after a brief stay was escorted out of the hall to a lively tune amidst spirited singing and dancing. The overflow crowd of avreichim all joined together in the heartfelt festivities. Kollel Yissacher B’Ohalecha, with 22 branches across the entire Eretz Yisroel, provides a commute free learning solution for over 1,700 yungerleit who master masechtas and miktzoas in most areas of Shas. With a strong emphasis on diligent studies and punctual attendance, Rav Weisbord encourages the yungerleit to bring out their potential while providing them with a structure where they can continue to grow together with fellow avreichim as a chaburah with a clear focus on shteiging. The Rosh Yeshiva is involved in the curricular planning as well as the financial welfare of Yissacher B’Ohalecha’s swelling roster of accomplished Torah scholars. Rav Weisbord divides his time between his travels throughout Eretz Yisroel to oversee the orderly function of the Kollelim and his overseas fundraising missions which bring vital support to the network’s continued effort toward growth and successful development.

24-hours a Day Non-stop Learning in Yerushalayim ?

Three kedoshei elyon had one common concept when it came to learning Torah – they were the Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh (Rabbi Chaim ibn Attar 1696-1743) when he came to Eretz Yisroel; the Ramchal (Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto 1707-1746) when he lived in Padua, Italy;  and Hagaon, Harav Chaim Volozhiner, (1749-1821) the famous talmid of the Gaon of Vilna. They each had a yeshiva with ‘around-the-clock’ Torah learning, 24-hours a day, so that there would be no minute when the sound of Torah learning would not be heard in this world. The 24-hour period would be divided into shifts, and as one ended the next would begin. Torah-24 A “Torah-24” Center has been opened in Yerushalayim and the Nasi is Maran Sar Hatorah, Harav Chaim Kanievsky, zt”l. Under ONE ROOF, from 6:00 am – 6:00 am, 10 kollelim fill successive learning shifts. Each kollel focuses on a specific area of in-depth Torah study. Ongoing Threats to Klal Yisrael Prompt Clarion Call for “Enhanced Shemiras Shabbos” Issued By Gedolei Eretz Yisrael

By Chaim Gold  Rare. It is extremely rare to witness a gathering of the senior elder Gedolei Hador from across the spectrum as they gather together in one room to issue a call to Klal Yisrael. That is what happened earlier this week in Bnei Brak as the Nesius of the Daf HaYomi B’Halacha gathered at the Slabodka Yeshiva. Among the venerated senior Gedolim who addressed the assemblage were HaGaon HaRav Dov Landau, shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Slabodka, HaGaon HaRav Moshe Hillel Hirsch, shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Slabodka, HaGaon HaRav Avraham Salim, shlita, Nasi of Shas Moetzet Chachmei HaTorah, the Sanzer Rebbe, shlita, and HaGaon HaRav Chizkiyahu Yosef Mishkovsky, shlita. The asifa was also attended by HaGaon HaRav Dovid Cohen, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of the Chevron Yeshiva, the Alexander Rebbe, shlita, HaGaon HaRav Shmuel Bezalel shlita, a Rosh Yeshiva at Yeshiva Porat Yosef, the Dushinsky Rebbe, shlita, HaGaon HaRav Shraga Shteinman, shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Orchos Torah, the Seret-Vizhnitzer Rebbe, shlita, and numerous other luminaries from the Yeshiva world, the Sephardic Torah world and the Chassidishe world. The event was also attended and addressed by Rav Dovid Hofstedter, shlita, Nasi of Dirshu.  The gathering was held for one reason and one reason alone. To give chizuk to Klal Yisrael and to encourage Klal Yisrael to undertake the limud of hilchos Shabbos and Masechta Shabbos. This year on Shavuos, the Daf HaYomi B’Halacha will embark on the learning of hilchos Shabbos, Chelek Gimmel of the Mishnah Berurah in its machzor shelishi. Simultaneously, Dirshu’s popular, new Amud HaYomi program is in the middle of Masechta Shabbos. One who participates in both programs has the distinct opportunity to learn both the practical halachos of Shabbos along with its underpinnings in the sugyos of Masechta Shabbos.  In a unique, historic call and message to Klal Yisrael, the senior Gedolim took time from their busy schedules with many even traveling to Bnei Brak to speak with one united voice and encourage Klal Yisrael, k’ish echad b’lev echad, to be mekabel Shabbos; to accept upon themselves to learn the halachos of Shabbos and incorporate the limud into their daily schedules either with a chavrusah or by attending one of nearly 1,000 available shiurim.  This remarkable achdus of purpose among the Gedolim and Poskim of Klal Yisrael was not limited to Eretz Yisrael. In the United States as well, three very important gatherings of Rabbanim were held last week, where the Rabbanim, with one voice, encouraged Klal Yisrael and their congregants to grab the opportunity and join the limud of hilchos Shabbos and Masechta Shabbos.  The first asifa at the home of the venerated Rosh Yeshiva of Mesivta of Lakewood and Telshe, HaGaon HaRav Yitzchok Sorotzkin, shlita, was attended by more than a minyan of Rabbanim. The second asifa, held at the home of HaRav Shmuel Blech, shlita, the Zekan Harabbanim of Lakewood, was attended by numerous prominent Lakewood Rabbanim.  The third gathering was held at the home of HaRav Shaul Simcha Friedman, shlita, Rav of Khal Shemen L’Mincha of Lakewood with many chassidishe rabbanim in attendance. The most remarkable thing about all these gatherings was the profound sense of achdus among all the different shevatim of Klal Yisrael as they called on Klal Yisrael to engaged in the ultimate shemira for Klal Yisrael – Shabbos! The gatherings were held

Who Are the True ‘Neturei Karta,’ the Guardians of the City, and Why Did the Enemies Infiltrate Parts of Eretz Yisrael?

The decisive drashah of Hagaon Harav Aryeh Leib Shapira, shlita, Mashgiach of the Ponevezh Yeshiva, addressing one hundred talmidei chachamim, Shas Yiden, and their relatives who participated in the joyous annual Siyum HaShas, after they were tested by Hagaon Harav Chaim Peretz Berman, shlita, and Hagaon Harav Bunim Schreiber, shlita A fundamental lesson for every parent and mechanech.  *  With the permission of the Torah luminary, a man whose vision has created many great things, the Pozna Rov, Hagaon Harav Avrohom HaLevi Eisen, shlita. At the outset, I would like to extend a special blessing to the esteemed Rebbetzin, who stands behind the Pozna Rov, and helps and supports his endeavors to proliferating true talmidei chachamim. I want to share a story that I heard from the Rov of Yerushalayim, Hagaon Harav Betzalel Zolty, zt”l. From it, you’ll understand how much gratitude and honor are due to the esteemed Rebbetzin. After the Rogatchover Gaon was niftar, a dispute arose between the community members of Dvinsk, where he served as the Rov of the Chassidic community, and the Rebbetzin, the widow of the Rov, zt”l. The size of Dvinsk was approximately like the size of Gan Varsha in Bnei Brak… and the Rogatchover wasn’t even the Rav of the entire city, only of the Chassidic community. Nevertheless, he was considered Rabban Shel Kol Bnei Hagolah, and his fame spread far and wide across the Jewish world. Accordingly, the community members gave him a suitable salary fitting for the Rabban Shel Kol Bnei Hagolah, a generous salary in proportion to what was customarily given to a Rov of such a small community. But after his petirah, the members of the community argued that indeed, the Rogatchover was the Rabban Shel Kol Bnei Hagolah, and therefore they needed to give him a salary accordingly. However, they claimed, the Rebbetzin is not the Gaon of the generation. Therefore, they claimed, we should only need to give her what we would give to any other Rov’s widow, not as the widow of a leading Gaon. This question was brought before the Gedolim of that generation and it even reached the doorstep of Hagaon Harav Chaim Ozer Grodzensky, zt”l. Reb Chaim Ozer didn’t need much deliberation to give a psak; he responded immediately and said unequivocally: ‘A wife of a talmid chacham is like her husband. Being that he was the Gadol Hador, therefore, she is also the great like the Gadol Hador. He was the Rabban Shel Kol Bnei Hagolah, and she, the Rebbetzin, is also the Rebbetzin Shel Kol Bnei Hagolah, and therefore, she deserves the expanded allowance, as what her husband received!’ From here, we must draw the necessary conclusion regarding the esteemed Rebbetzin, tlita, the wife of the honored Rov, who took a part in Torah that nobody has been able to claim since the times of Rabi Akiva and his talmidim. Blessed are you that you have merited to have a part in such outstanding talmidei chachamim. You have a hundred talmidei chachamim, a hundred children, and each one of them knows the entire Shas.” **  Morai v’Rabbosai, It is hard for me to speak before you. I will own up, without any shame. During last Chol Hamoed Sukkos, my family members entered the sukkah and found me sitting there and crying. They asked me, “Why are you crying?” And I replied to them that I had just seen documentation from your previous tests, of Shas Yiden. I witnessed how you are fluent with the entire Shas as

Amud HaYomi To Begin on Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, Monday, October 16th

By Chaim Gold  It is an eis tzarah l’Yaakov. The murderous barbaric attacks on Acheinu Bnei Yisrael in Eretz Yisrael have cast a pall of mourning upon Jews all over the world. As maaminim bnei maaminim we know that we who are not fighting at the front must do our part in this milchama. We know that Hashem is the ish milchama and the way to invoke rachamei shomayim is through Torah and tefilla. Whether it is taking on a new kabbalah to join the new worldwide Amud HaYomi program that begins on Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan or to increase Torah learning in any other meaningful way, that is the response that is needed for Klal Yisrael. All Torah learning brings down a shefa of rachamei shomayim and indeed, on Motzoei Simchas Torah, the venerated senior posek, HaGaon HaRav Moshe Sternbuch, shlita, called on all yidden to increase their Torah learning.  The Launch of the Amud HaYomi Initiative  Rabbi Shalom Yachnes, one of Dirshu’s coordinators overseeing the opening of new Amud HaYomi shiurim, commented, “When I speak to rabbanim, and talmidei chachomim who have undertaken to deliver shiurim, there is a great sense of excitement and anticipation.”  Just in Florida alone eight shiurim have already been established. In Los Angeles, as well, several shiurim have been set up as well as shiurim in locales including Providence, Rhode Island; Dallas, Texas; Toronto and Montreal, Canada; Highland Park, NJ; and Philadelphia, PA!  This is of course in addition to the hundreds, yes, hundreds of shiurim established in major centers of Yiddishkeit in Eretz Yisrael and America, such as Brooklyn, Lakewood and Monsey.   In Lakewood there all already more than ten Amud HaYomi shiurim that will begin on Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan including shiurim given by such prominent maggidei shiur as Rav Chaim Weg, Dayan at the Beis Havaad, who will be giving the shiur in the vibrant Torah center of Lutzk and Rav Eliezer Ralbag, Rav of the Lakewood Courtyard and Rav Abish Zelishovsky who will be delivering a shiur in Khal Zichron Yaakov.   As of this writing, over twenty shiurim have been established in Brooklyn with many more to come. A sampling of the maggidei shiurim in Flatbush are Rav Michel Spitzer in Khal Tiferes Tzvi, Rav Elliot Jemal at Congregation Ketter Torah and Rav Shlomo Cynamon at Kollel Bnei Torah. In Boro Park, some of the maggidei shiur are Rav Yitzchok Zalman Gips, Rav of Khal Birkas Avrohom, Rav Sender Rechinitzer, Belzer Dayan, Rav Chaim Meir Friedman in Klausenberg, Rav Gershon Fleishman in Rachmastrivka and Rav Yechezkel Landau in Williamsburg.   In Monsey, Rav Daniel Field will be delivering a shiur at Khal Mevaser Tov, Rav Yeshaya Zelig Shapiro at Beis Tefillah, Rav Gabi Fried will be delivering two shiurim one at Chayei Olam Community Kollel and one at Kehillas Ateres Rosh, Rav Chaim Meir Tabak will say a shiur at Vizhnitz on Francis Place, and Rav Mordechai Stresser at Klausenberg.   According to Rav Avigdor Berenstein, a senior member of Dirshu’s hanhala, Dirshu’s offices has already signed up some 6,000 new learners of Amud HaYomi in Eretz Yisrael alone. In addition, hundreds of shiurim have already been established across the length and breadth of Eretz Yisrael, ready to begin daf beis amud aleph of Masechta Brachos this coming Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan.   Numerous Gedolei

The Magnitude of the Loss of Rav Gershon Edelstein zatzal

by Rabbi Yair Hoffman for 5tjt.com He uniquely combined Torah knowledge, love of Mussar study, the Lithuanian Torah notion of a Mussar Shmuess, leadership, and a profound love of man. For Torah knowledge, Moreinu HaRav Gershon Edelstein zt’l was unparalleled. He was the Rosh Yeshiva of the Ponovech Yeshiva for an astounding eighty years. Rav Edelstein, zt’l, gave shiurim in Talmud to his students until the very end. Teaching Torah His dedication to the teaching of Torah can be seen from the fact that even in his hospital bed, he delivered his daily shiur. He gave that shiur even during the months of Nissan and Av—the traditional months where Bnei Torah have a short break or vacation. His lucidity was never absent. His last shiur, on Monday night, was given to the close talmidim who visited as well as the live hookup to the Yeshiva itself. The shiur lasted for precisely 16.5 minutes. Mussar Study Rav Edelstein, zt’l, actively encouraged everyone, layman and Torah scholar alike, to partake in the daily study of Mussar—ethical self-reflection. He would constantly remind others that it is an obligation incumbent upon us all embodied in the Mishnah Berurah itself. He emphasized, along with Rav Chaim Kanievsky, zt’l, with whom he partnered on so many projects, the daily halachic obligation that few of us are performing—studying Mussar daily. Although the Mishnah Berurah clearly rules that this is a great obligation (See Mishnah Berurah 1:12), the obligation is almost universally ignored. Rav Edelstein, zt’l, would point out that the Chayei Adam Klal 143 also writes that it is an obligation that supersedes learning Mishnayos or any other learning. It is also clear that it is an obligation from the fourth chapter of the Rambam in Shemoneh Perakim. In rishonim, we find that Rabbeinu Yonah (2:15) also discusses this daily obligation, too. The Mussar Shmuess Each week, on Tuesdays, the shiur always included the traditional Lithuanian-style Mussar Shmuess, wherein the Rosh Yeshiva would examine one of the meforshim on Tanach or on a Midrash and would draw a profound ethical lesson that was both textually and contextually compelling. There was no other way to understand it and it always contained a remarkable insight in human character. Leadership And Love Of Man The loss of Rav Gershon Edelstein, zt’l, is devastating not only because of the loss in Torah—he was of the Ziknei HaRoshei Yeshiva who gave iyun shiurim and Rosh Yeshiva of the prestigious Ponovech Yeshiva. The loss is so significant because he was not just the Gadol haDor in learning; he was the Gadol haDor in chinuch and guidance. A few years ago, he gave a remarkable hashkafah session about chinuch and how to deal with those who are either struggling or off the derech, r’l. The Wealthy Man And The Car Rav Edelstein, zt’l, told of a story where a wealthy individual had a delicate question regarding his off the derech son. The son asked the father if he could buy him a car. The parents were unsure as to whether to buy him the car, on condition that he not use it on Shabbos. The husband and wife discussed it between themselves and decided to present it to the Chazon Ish. The Chazon Ish paskened to the husband that he should buy him the

TORAH – UNTIL HIS LAST BREATH! The Final Minutes Of The Life Of Hagaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein ZT”L

The condition of Hagaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein Zt””l was serious but stable, Tuesday morning. There were no notable signs that this would be the Ponavezh Rosh Yeshiva’s final few hours in this world. Now, close Talmidim of the Rosh yeshiva are recounting the final few minutes of his life, describing his unwavering commitment to Limud Hatorah, and to delivering his daily Shiur – literally until the very last breath. On Monday, the Rosh Yeshiva delivered his daily Shiur from his hospital bed. This was the daily Shuir that he had been giving for decades – even during Bain Hazmanim. His Shiur on Monday was given to a few close Talmidim, with a live hookup to the Yeshiva. The Monday night Shiur lasted for 16.5 minutes and was delivered with complete dedication. Several devoted Talmidim, who made sure not to miss any of Shiurim for many years – even during Bais Hazmanin, participated in the Shiur. Among the participating students were Rav Shaya Ginsburg and Rav Ostron, who had served as “Chozrim” of the Shiur for years. On Tuesday morning, the Rosh Yeshiva requested a pen and paper in order to prepare the Shiur he had planned to deliver from his hospital bed. As he did ever Tuesday, in addition to the Shiur, the Rosh Yeshiva would add a weekly “Shmooze” to the Bochrim. His grandson, Moti Paley, asked him, “Sabba, would you like to prepare the weekly Shmooze as well?” The Rosh Yeshiva Zt”l  responded: “There will be no Shmooze today.” The Rosh Yeshiva then began writing the Shiur he had planned to deliver, continuing for a few minutes, until suddenly his heart stopped beating as he prepared the Shiur, totally immersed in Torah. The Shiur that never ceased, not for weather, not for Bain Hazmanim, suddenly ended. Klal Yisroel was plunged into mourning, with the loss of the Gadol Hador, who lived and breathed Torah – literally – until his last breath- at the age of 100. Below are the notes that the Rosh Yeshiva was writing when he was Niftar. Yehi Zichro Boruch… HaRav HaGaon Gershon Edelstein, zt’l, was the Nasi of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah and the leader of Chareidi Jewry in Eretz Yisrael and throughout the world and served as the Rosh Yeshivah of Ponevezh Yeshivah for 80 years. After the petirah of HaGaon HaRav Aryeh Leib Shteinman, z’tl, HaRav Edelstein and HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, zt’l became the leader of the Olam HaTorah. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)
