Sefer Torah Found Abandoned On ShortLine bus

A sacred Torah scroll has been found, apparently left on a ShortLine Coach USA bus and company officials have enlisted the aid of officials in the Village of Kiryas Joel to find its owner. Village Public Safety Director Moses Witriol retrieved the scroll from ShortLine headquarters in Mahwah, NJ and the bus company and he are trying to determine its rightful owner and return it. Witriol told MidHudsonNews.com the Torah is between 20 and 30 years old and in good condition. ShortLine is attempted to determine what route that particular bus had in an effort to find its owner. Witriol suspects it belongs to a congregation that spends the summer months in Sullivan County and may have brought with its members by bus recently. For now, the sacred scroll is locked up in a Kiryas Joel synagogue. If anyone has an idea as to who the Torah belongs to, they are asked to call the Village of Kiryas Joel Public Safety Office at 845-782-5577. (Source: MidHudsonNews.com)

Regular service was set to resume today on the Coach USA/Short Line bus routes where drivers, mechanics and ticket agents have been on strike for nearly two weeks. Routes in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania were disrupted, affecting about 3,500 hundred riders each day. In Rockland County, the strike had affected about 750 commuters who use Short Line’s express service from the Exit 14 park and ride lot in Nanuet and another 250 commuters who catch Short Line buses from Suffern to Manhattan. Company president George Grieve said workers have approved a new three-year contract and that full service will be restored by 3 a.m. Grieve said the newly approved contract is the same one workers had previously rejected before walking out on strike May 23. Short-Line Bus Strike Into Its Second Week

Short Line is planning to bring in out-of-state bus drivers later this week to restart its commuter service between Rockland and New York City, which has been crippled by a 10-day-old drivers’ strike. There’s no indication the strike between Short Line’s parent company, Hudson Transit Lines, and Transport Workers of America Local 225, the union representing 240 drivers, mechanics and ticket agents, will be settled anytime soon. A federal mediator has been brought in to direct negotiations. The strike has hit about 3,500 commuters from Rockland, Orange and northern New Jersey particularly hard. Riders have had to scramble to find other means to get into New York City. In Rockland, about 750 commuters use Short Line’s express service from the Exit 14 park-and-ride lot in Nanuet, and another 250 or so catch Short Line buses from Suffern to midtown and downtown.
