Emergency Aviation Drill Held At Ben Gurion Airport [PHOTOS]

This morning (Tuesday), the emergency aviation drill of the Israel Airports Authority and Israel’s emergency response system took place, with the participation of the Israel Airports Authority, Magen David Adom, the Israel Police, Fire and Rescue Services, the IDF, and other agencies. The “Phoenix” emergency drill simulated a scenario of a plane crash involving 290 passengers. The Magen David Adom objective in the drill was to assess the activation of emergency protocols and the coordination between all the participating agencies, including the Israel Airports Authority, Israel Police, firefighters, and the IDF, to assess the mobilization of forces, rapid response to the scene, deployment of MDA staff and volunteers on-site, handling and rapid evacuation of casualties, and more. The drill simulated a situation in which the MDA national dispatch center received a report from the control tower of a malfunction on a plane, which then crashed on the runway. As a result, Magen David Adom forces from the Yarkon, Ayalon, Dan, Sharon, Jerusalem, and Lachish regions were required to quickly reach Ben Gurion Airport to provide medical assistance and treatment to 290 simulated casualties from the plane. The drill involved dozens of Magen David Adom emergency vehicles, including 8 mobile intensive care units, 20 life-support ambulances, 4 mass casualty incident stations, 2 jeep ambulances, medicycles, 2 regional command posts, the national command vehicle, a Unimog, an intensive care bus, and hundreds of paramedics, EMTs, and first aid providers.

THE LATEST INFO – UPDATED 1:45PM ET: Ben Gurion Airport Could Shut Monday Morning

Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv could be shut beginning Monday morning after the head of Israel’s largest labor union, Histadrut, called for a nationwide strike to protest the lack of a deal to free hostages still being held by Hamas. Histadrut chief Arnon Bar-David said the strike will begin at 6 a.m. Monday, with Ben Gurion’s closure scheduled for 8 a.m., when all takeoffs and landings will be halted. The duration of the airport’s closure remains uncertain, with the spokesman stating that it is “unclear” how long Israel’s only international hub will be shuttered. It appears that the strike is planned to last – at least at this point – for one day. However, a message on Ben Gurion Airport’s official website indicated that there will be no airport shutdown at all. Reports suggest there is fierce debate among airport workers whether the critical hub should be shut down. It is important to note that a report on Sunday afternoon claimed that the strike at Ben Gurion will last just 2 hours – from 8 am to 10 am – and will be limited to departures, but will not affect incoming flights. But this is all speculation. No airport official has gone on record confirming whether the airport will be open or closed on Monday morning, or how many flights the potential strike would affect. As of 1:30PM ET, the airport has refused to go on record to any news agency regarding the potential shutdown. Multiple airport employees have given YWN mixed signals – and all have refused to go on record. YWN spoke to H&M Travel, a popular travel agent who has booked many flights for bochurim, who says that “based on the word I have received from El Al, all their flights and schedules will continue as regular,” indicating that flights carrying bochurim to Israel on Monday will not be affected. Motty from H&M Travel added that El Al says all flights are running as scheduled, besides for the following changes: When there is an official statement that says the airport will be fully open, YWN will publish it. But for reasons unknown, Histadrut, Ben Gurion Airport and everyone else in a position of authority on this matter refuse to go on record, leaving thousands of people in limbo.   “A deal is more important than anything else,” Histadrut Labor Federation chief Arnon Bar-David said in announcing the nationwide strike. “Jews are being murdered in the tunnels of Gaza. It is impossible to grasp and has to stop,” he added, asserting that no deal has been reached “because of political consideration.” “We are no longer one people; we are camp against camp,” Arnon added, saying “we need to bring back the State of Israel.” “We are getting body bags instead of a deal. I have come to the conclusion that only our intervention might move those who need to be moved,” he declared. “I call on the people of Israel to go out

Ryanair Suspends Flights to Israel Again, Citing High Costs at Ben Gurion Airport

Ryanair has announced that it is suspending all flights to and from Israel, just a month after resuming operations. The airline stated that the decision was due to being forced to operate at the more expensive Terminal 3 at Ben Gurion International Airport, which would result in higher airfares for passengers. Ryanair CEO Eddie Wilson criticized the airport for keeping the low-cost Terminal 1 closed and charging fees that were never agreed upon. The suspension will affect flights to 26 destinations throughout Europe and could last through the Yomim Noraim in the fall. Wizz Air and Easyjet will continue to operate flights to Europe in place of Ryanair. Ryanair initially suspended flights to and from Israel due to the outbreak of war on October 7 and the risk of rocket attacks on Ben Gurion Airport from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip. However, the airline resumed flights on February 1 as the threat of rocket attacks decreased with Hamas’ depleted rocket supply and damaged military capabilities. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

Iranian Jew Stopped At Ben Gurion Airport For Suspected Espionage, Deported to Iran

An Iranian man of Jewish descent was apprehended at Ben Gurion Airport on Friday, raising suspicions of engaging in espionage activities on behalf of Iranian intelligence, according to Israel’s Shin Bet security agency. The man, who has familial connections in Israel, was taken into custody by Shin Bet agents upon his arrival early on Friday morning. The security agency disclosed that during interrogation, the man admitted to being in Israel on a mission to spy for Tehran. Consequently, he was promptly deported back to Iran via a third country. Authorities deemed that he posed no immediate threat. The specific country from which he had entered Israel has not been disclosed by the Shin Bet. According to the Shin Bet’s report, the individual had been directed by Iranian security operatives to gather intelligence on Israel prior to his journey. He was furnished with a seemingly innocuous item – an empty tissue box – intended to conceal surveillance equipment, including a cellular phone and a portable power bank. “The provided items were likely intended for his use in clandestine espionage activities targeting entities within Israel,” remarked the Shin Bet. The agency further disclosed that the suspect was instructed to utilize his time within Israel to collect information on multiple designated targets. The addresses of these targets were intended to be communicated to him by his Iranian handler subsequent to his arrival. The incident is perceived as part of a broader Iranian endeavor to establish covert espionage and potentially terror networks within Israel. The Shin Bet also highlighted the influence that Iran seeks to exert on social divisions via online platforms. This announcement deviates from the customary practice of the Shin Bet, which typically refrains from promptly publicizing developments in international espionage cases involving Iran. Furthermore, the agency does not typically repatriate apprehended spies back to their home countries. Sources within the defense establishment conveyed that the individual in question had likely succumbed to pressure from Iranian intelligence, as well as the allure of substantial financial gain. This contributed to the decision to deport him rather than press charges. A defense official emphasized that the low likelihood of the individual facing legal charges within the Israeli system was due to his non-Israeli citizenship and the fact that he had not yet engaged in any substantive activities. “He was intercepted before any action was taken. This is in addition to other operational considerations,” the official elaborated. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

NICE TRY: Non-Jewish Women Posing as Chareidim Busted After Landing at Ben Gurion on Shabbos

Two “Chareidi” women who landed in Ben-Gurion on Friday night aroused the suspicion of inspectors of the Population and Immigration Authority (PIBA) and were detained for questioning. The two women, aged 41 and 59, who had arrived on a flight from Georgia were revealed as non-Jewish Georgian citizens, Ynet reported. The women intended to settle in Israel and find work as (illegal) foreign workers. Instead, they were swiftly sent back to their country of origin. Apart from the two women, 20 additional travelers who tried to enter Israel illegally over the weekend were detained and sent back to their country of origin. The report added that PIBA inspectors have seen a recent surge of Georgian citizens who arrive in Israel with tourist visas but intend to settle illegally in Israel and find work. Their most common method to attempt to fool PIBA inspectors is to impersonate airport employees, including fake employee badges and uniforms that closely resemble employees or controllers. Inspectors are familiar with the method and the passengers in question are routinely detained and refused entry. The inspectors were surprised by the new method attempted by the “Chareidi” women, who knew enough to dress modestly, including long sleeves, skirts, and head coverings but were apparently unaware that Chareidi women don’t travel on Shabbos. PANIC AT BEN GURION: Harmless Rocket Shell Causes Mayhem [VIDEOS]

A bomb scare occurred at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv on Thursday after a traveler brought a rocket shell to security. A family had visited Ramat HaGolan during their trip to Israel, during which they came across rocket fragments from projectiles that had been previously fired into Israel, presumably from Lebanon. The family took one of the shells of a rocket as a souvenir, planning to bring it home with them. However, during security screening at Ben Gurion, a momentary misunderstanding occurred, leading to a report of a bomb at the airport to be announced, which prompted travelers to panic, run, and hide. After several minutes, security ascertained that there was no threat of an explosion occuring, and explained to everyone that there was no danger to them and that they could return to their places in line. According to the Israeli Airports Authority, after the family was questioned, they were allowed to get on their flight (without the bomb). Also, a man who fell during the emergency evacuation was lightly injured and taken to a hospital for treatment, the authority says. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

On Tuesday November 30, 2021 an emergency exercise was held at the Ben Gurion Airport. The drill, titled “Eagle” simulated the crash of passenger plane with 250 people onboard. The drill was a joint effort between the Israeli Airports Authority, Magen David Adom, Israel Police, Israel Fire and Rescue and other emergency organizations. The goals of the drill were to evaluate the emergency protocols and response, the collaboration between all participating organizations, including the Airport Authority, the Israeli Police, Israel Fire and Rescue, the IDF and the Home Front Command. ISRAEL CLOSES AIRPORT: Closure Of Ben Gurion Airport Until Next Sunday

The Israeli Government has approved  the closure of Ben-Gurion Airport from tomrorow night until next Sunday in order to prevent the entry of additional mutated coronavirus variants into Israel.. The restrictions will apply to everyone, even those who have already been fully vaccinated or have recovered from the virus – amid fears that Israel’s vaccination campaign could lead to the emergence of an Israeli virus variant that is resistant to vaccines. A special committee will be formed by the Health and Transportation ministries to review requests for travel for humanitarian or exceptional circumstances. The development follows the announcement by the UK on Friday that there is some evidence that the British virus variant may be more deadly than the original strain. Unfortunately, the facts in Israel seem to be adding to the evidence, with ten pregnant women now critically ill due to the virus (six of whom have been so far proven to be carrying the UK variant) and a surge of cases diagnosed in children, with some falling seriously ill. Furthermore, Prof. Ran Blitzer, a member of the Health Ministry’s advisory team on COVID-19, told Kan News on Motzei Shabbos that the British variant is behind over 40% of infections in Israel. “Much more efforts need to be implemented at Ben-Gurion and it should have been done a long time ago,” Blitzer said. Ben Gurion Airport To Open Skies On Thursday At Midnight

Ben-Gurion Airport is opening Israel’s skies on Thursday at midnight following the announcement of Health Minister Yuli Edelstein and Transportation Minister Miri Regev on Wednesday night that an agreement has been reached to resume allowing Israeli travelers to leave the country. The announcement was later confirmed by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in a video statement made on Facebook. Since the current lockdown was imposed before Sukkos, the only passengers who were allowed to fly out of Israel were those who purchased tickets prior to the closure. With airlines threatening lawsuits against the government for damages incurred by the closure, Israel’s Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit stated that the closure of the airport is legally problematic. Chareidi Man Convicted of Killing His Daughter A Decade Ago, Caught at Ben Gurion Re-Entering Israel

Eight months after he succeeded in fleeing Israel, while he was on leave from the Eitanim Psychiatric Hospital, Nachman Anshin, the Chareidi man from Meah Shearim who was convicted of killing his own 10-month-old daughter, Fruma Anshin A”H, a decade ago, was caught in Ben Gurion Airport when he returned to Israel. During the trial, in spite of the damning indictment against him, the Jerusalem Magisterial Court accepted the opinion of the psychiatrist who claimed that he was not responsible for his actions during the time of the murder due to insanity. Due to this decision, Anshin was sent to forced hospitalization at Eitanim Hospital located just outside of the capital. He managed to escape and flee the country, but was arrested upon his return. As El Al Halts All Flights, Israel’s Aviation Industry Is At “Point Of No Return,” Ben Gurion CEO says

Following a labor dispute between El Al and its pilots’ union last week, the embattled airline canceled all flights and furloughed an additional 500 employees late last week, including 100 pilots. “Since the pilots refuse to staff the flights — which include cargo flights and a limited number of passenger flights — we are forced to make personnel adjustments,” El Al stated. Hundreds of employees of Tamam, an El Al subsidiary which provides kosher airline meals for El Al and other carriers at Ben-Gurion Airport, have also been furloughed. Prior to the breakdown between El Al and the pilots’ union, El Al had stated it was in the final stages of reaching an agreement with the finance ministry but the agreement cannot be finalized without the approval of the El Al workers’ unions. Meanwhile, CEO of Ben-Gurion Airport Shmuel Zakay stated earlier this week that Israel’s aviation industry was close to “the point of no return” due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. According to Zakay, it will take months to safely and efficiently resume flights after aviation employees have been idle for months, leading to a decrease in operational efficiency. Zakay warned that the damage to Israel’s aviation industry will lead to “massive strategic harm” and accused the government of stagnating in its response to the pandemic. “This week civilian flights resumed in the world even in countries whose illness levels are high,” he stated. “We can operate safe civilian aviation even under the shadow of coronavirus.” Zakay said that rehabilitating Israel’s aviation industry is not a matter of ensuring Israelis can go on vacation but a matter of preventing “fatal harm to an industry comprised of tens of thousands of people and hundreds of professions.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Purim In Israel Finds Ben Gurion Airport In “Yom Kippur Mode,” El Al Requests Loan Of $700 Million To “Ensure Continued Existence”

Ben Gurion Airport is reportedly closing operations in half of its international terminals and reducing manpower by 79% following Israel’s announcement on Monday night that all travelers arriving in Israel will now be required to self-quarantine for two weeks. Scores of flights have been canceled in the wake of the announcement and two of the five check-in areas in Terminal 3 are being closed, Ben-Gurion announced on Tuesday. Israel Airports Authority (IAA) workers union stated it was operating on “Yom Kippur mode” with reports saying that only 30% of airport employees are reporting to work. All temporary employees have been put on leave without pay and other employees have been put on annual leave. Israel’s Airport Authority is also closing Ramon Airport in Eilat at night, a Channel 12 News report said on Tuesday. Quiet and NO lines at Ben Gurion #Airport! I’ve worked for the authority for over 40 years…We’ve never experienced something like, not during the Gulf War or the first and second intifadas. There’s never been anything like this.” Arkia and Israir Airlines also announced on Monday that they are ending their international flights for the time being. The airlines will continue with internal flights to Eilat from Ben-Gurion and Haifa. El Al, Israel’s national airline, stated that it will continue to run reduced international flights following Netanyahu’s announcement on Monday night, saving Israel from complete isolation. On Sunday, El Al reported an expected revenue decline of $140-160 million for the months of January to April 2020. The airline is requesting a loan of $700 million from the Israeli government to ensure its continued existence, according to a Ynet report on Tuesday. The amount is based on El Al’s calculations for a scenario of being almost completely out of operation for the next three months. According to the Finance Ministry’s demand, the financial assistance will be provided as a loan rather than compensation and El Al will be required to provide collateral for repayment, an extremely difficult position for the company, which was amidst a process of taking out loans for a $1.6 million fleet of new airplanes when the coronavirus crisis hit and was reportedly already in a state of declining revenue due to competition from low-cost airlines at Ben-Gurion. The Population and Immigration Authority reported that 12,246 foreigners have voluntarily left Israel since Monday night’s announcement. Also on Tuesday, Israel Railways announced that passengers arriving at Ben-Gurion will no longer be permitted to use the train station at the airport. The station will still be open for airport employees and Israeli citizens traveling within Israel who will be required to show their plane tickets to railway employees. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Taxi Driver Strike Causes Chaos at Ben Gurion [VIDEOS & PHOTOS]

Lines of taxis left their dispatch centers in Tel Aviv, Holon, and Ben Gurion Airport this morning at 7:45 a.m., during rush hour, in a slow procession to the government headquarters in Jerusalem in protest of the proposed change in taxi fares set to begin on January 1st. According to the organizers of the protest, the new fares will harm their income in a significant manner. On Sunday evening, the protest returned to the airport as dozens of taxis stood at the taxi stand with drivers unwilling to pick up passengers. The drivers added to the chaotic protest by waving signs that read: “The government of Israel is murdering the taxi profession.” Drivers even went so far as to set up burial coffins for their profession that had the words “taxi service” written on them. According to the new standard issued by the government, cab fares within cities will increase by 12.9% in January, but the cost of a taxi ride between cities will fall by 6.7%. The revised fares will be calculated on a new kind of taxi meter that drivers will be required to install by January. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

PHOTOS: See How Many Cigarettes This Immigrant Was Caught Smuggling Into Ben Gurion Airport

On Monday, a new immigrant by the name of Brady Shimshilshuli was taken into custody under the suspicion of smuggling a large quantity of cigarettes into Israel by using his status as a new immigrant. Shimshilshuli’s supposed goal, according to authorities, was to evade taxation on importing the cigarettes. According to a statement issued by the Tax Authority regarding the arrest, the value of the smuggled goods that were apprehended amounted to more than half-a-million shekel. The magisterial court in Rishon LeZion complied with the request of the Drug Unit of the Tax Authority at Ben Gurion and release Shimshilshuli under strict conditions. Shimshilshuli passed through the “green line” in the airport, which passengers go through of their own volition stating that they have nothing to declare. Shimshilshuli was pulled over for inspection and that is when the large amount of cigarettes were found. The total amount of cigarettes smuggled amounted to 2,228 packets all of either the Winston or Pall Mall brands. They were packed into 19 suitcases, which were supposed to be utilized to help him bring over all his personal belongings from abroad to Israel. British Youth Threaten To Blow Up Plane At Ben Gurion; 18 Brits Forced to Disembark

Some 18 British teenagers were forcibly removed from a British Airways flight that was scheduled to depart from Ben Gurion airport in Israel on Sunday, before the plane took off. The cause of the removal was that one of them threatened to blow up the aircraft. Even after it was clear that none of the teens had any bomb on them, the Captain insisted that he would not fly the plane with those 18 people. The 18 teens attended a private event in Israel. After the group boarded the plane, one of them announced that he would blow up the plane. This act caused the captain to update the management of the British airline. The pilot was instructed to remove the problematic teens from the plane. A security team was dispatched to the area and carried out inspections of all passengers, their luggage and the plane itself. The baggage of the passengers was left in the terminal together with their bags. The teenagers are waiting with their luggage and are then expected to head back to London. El Al Among World’s Most Delayed Airlines; Ben Gurion Among Worst Airports

Israelis are not known for their punctuality and the national airline carrier of the country is similarly tardy. A recent report by Flightstats Website, a website that monitors and rates airlines on a number of operational attributes, states that El AL is one of the world’s worst airlines in terms of punctuality. The report, which comes out monthly put El Al third worst in the world for the month of September, and the previous track record isn’t much better. Of the 41 airlines measured, Egypt Air and Ethiopian Airlines ranked 41 and 40 and El Al ranked 39 as having the most delays of any major airlines. According to the site, the flight is counted as delayed if it takes off more than 15 minutes past its scheduled departure time. More than 34 percent of EL Al’s flights take off with a delay. September, the month in which the measurement was taken is the busiest month of the year for Israeli tourism with the High Holidays being major draws for travelers. Some 2.2 million people came through Ben Gurion Airport’s doors over the month. On the flip side of the chart, ranking as the airlines with the fewest delays were SriLankan Airlines, Delta, and the Japanese air carrier ANA. But one cannot only blame the airline, the airport is also partly to blame as Ben Gurion ranked 351st out of 376 airports for having delayed departures. Only 66% of flights left on time, which is a similar average to the amount of flights that left on time for El Al. There was an average delay of 48.3 minutes of flights coming out of Ben Gurion. Ben Gurion Airport to Undergo Major Overhaul in 2019

According to a special report in Ynet, Ben Gurion Airport is set to undergo a major overhaul in 2019 that will see it become a more user friendly airport. The reason for the change, according to the report, is that Ben Gurion is expecting to see 25 million travelers pass through its halls in 2019, thus qualifying it in the “Large Airport” category. The changes will include six new baggage and security check booths in terminal three, a doubling of the capacity and use of Terminal one for short distance flights, even international ones, common check-in stations where passengers can check in to different airlines at the same station and added self-check-in booths. The goal of all these changes is to cut down on long waiting lines in the departures section of the terminal. The carpets in the areas leading from the terminal waiting area to the docking bays are all going to be changed and the bathrooms throughout the airport are slated to be refurbished. Additionally, the V.I.P. Lounges are also expected to be redone in an effort to raise the comfort level of the passengers. Following the new “Open Skies” policy in Israel, 10 new airline carriers will be establishing flight routes to and from Israel in December. Among these airlines are: Latam, Air Moldova, Air India, and Sichuan Airlines. It is expected that in 2018 a total of 23 million travelers will have walked through Ben Gurion’s halls, and that number is only expected to increase next year. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

The womanwho objected to a Chabad chossid putting tefilin on someone in Ben-Gurion Airport a few days ago, has been identified as a well-known Israeli professor and lecturer. According to a Channel 20 News report, the woman is Professor Penina Peri, wife of Yoram Peri, a professor of sociology and a former president of the New Israel Fund from 1999-2001. The video went viral on social media. Arutz-7’s Ben Zeigdon contacted Yoram Peri, who explained he was unaware of the incident. However, he did confirm his wife left Israel. Peri also served as a senior lecturer in Sapir College and Levinsky College. She is said to be an expert on multi-cultural theories and is known to have published books such as “Education in a Multicultural Society: Pluralism and Meeting Points between Cultural Rifts.” The Peri family has been living in Maryland for the past few years, and this is why she was flying after the incident captured on video. Today, she heads the Joseph and Alma Gildenhorn Institute for Israel Studies at the University of Maryland. Head of the Chabad House in Pisgat Ze’ev, the man in the center of the storm, Rav Meir Herzl, told Channel 20 that he was a bit early at the airport and decided to use the time to merit other Yidden with putting on tefilin. He approached persons and asked them if they wished to put on tefilin. One responded, “gladly”. Rav Herzl added, “Suddenly, a woman approached us and began screaming and insisting we leave the area and not daven in proximity to her. I did not pay attention to her. I continued putting tefilin on the man, who asked the woman to permit him to daven in quiet for a few minutes, but she would not hear of it. She shouted as seen in the video. When asked how he kept his cool, Rabbi Herzl explained “I did not see cause to get into it with her and respond. This is how we carry out ‘Mivtzaim’, as the Rebbe instructed us, to engage in and see the light exclusively, to bring additional light into the world and this blocks out the darkness on its own”. SHOCKING FOOTAGE: Woman Laughs And Mocks Man Putting On Tefillin By Chabad At Ben Gurion Airport

(VIDEO IN EXTENDED ARTICLE) It appears the ongoing incitement against religion and chareidim has influenced some. A traditional Israeli, Gad Kaufman, was traveling on a business trip and simply wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to put on Tefilin, after being asked by a Chabad shaliach in the airport if he would to. At that moment, both he and the Chabad shaliach were harassed by a woman who did not exactly see eye-to-eye with one putting on Tefilin. The self-hating Jewish woman is seen loudly mocking and insulting the two men. She demanded that they “move because you are bothering me….and “why are you doing this here, there are people here, this is a public place.” [EXPOSED: Woman Who Mocked Man Putting On Tefilin At Ben Gurion Airport Is A Well-Known Israeli Professor] The following was written by Gad Kaufman on his Facebook page, “An amazing incident occurred this morning in the Airport, when I was asked politely by a Chabad man, if I wanted to put on tefillin. I replied in the affirmative, and then a woman jumped up with a crazy look and began to curse, harass and disturb! “It is really shameful that being a Jew in this country is being persecuted by the leftist bohemian. If I were a Muslim or a Christian, would this behavior be more legitimate,” Kaufman asked rhetorically. The accompanying video shows the Chilul Hashem nebach, and just how a yid can unfortunately drop to such a level. Update On Grandson of Chareidi MK Who Was Caught With Millions In Cocaine At Ben Gurion Airport

Additional details surrounding a story reported on YWN last week, of a young Chareidi man in Israel arrested at Ben Gurion airport after police discovered he was transporting cocaine into the country. A daughter of MK Menachem Eliezer Moses, Heidy, tells Kan News that she has no doubt that Baruch Klein, the 22-year-old grandson of MK Moses, is covering up for someone “as that is his nature,” indicating that he alone would never be involved in such an act and he is clearly unwilling to speak. The young Klein was tapped by customs agents for a bag check when he appeared suspicious. A customs supervisor explained this has nothing to do with being Chareidi or not, but about their keen instinct and realizing something was suspicious about this arriving passenger. Customs agents found millions worth of cocaine in a double-walled suitcase as well as in bottles that appeared to contain wine, but in fact, contained liquid cocaine. He was arrested and arraigned and remanded for an additional 13 days as the investigation continues. Attorney Talya Gridish explains the drug dealers often use young men and women from the chareidi tzibur without criminal records to smuggle in their cargo. She explains in recent years, this has become increasingly common. At times they are aware of what they are carrying, while some are simply that naïve, unaware of just what they are doing. One young chareidi woman, identified as ‘G’, explains that someone she knew offered her a free trip to Europe including a shopping spree – with all expenses paid. “I thought he wanted to take me on a romantic trip. When we arrived in Amsterdam he told me ‘let’s change your suitcase which is so bulky. Use this one, which is far more valuable’. We got back to Israel and in the terminal, he switched suitcases and told me he would get my other suitcase back to me at a convenient time.” That man was apprehended in Ben-Gurion a month later and the entire scheme unfolded as his suitcase was full of drugs. This led police to ‘G’, who was informed she is a suspect in drug smuggling and conspiracy. “I then realized I became a victim,” G explains to the media. Customs shift supervisor Yoram Aaroni explains to the media that in the past two years there has been an alarming increase in attempted drug smuggling at the airport, citing cocaine, ecstasy and other dangerous drugs. Heidi arrived at the courthouse to attend the remand hearing for her nephew on Thursday, 18 Iyar. She expressed her concern, questioning who will protect him and make sure he remains well. Judge Guy Avnon explained there was sufficient evidence tying the suspect to the crimes he stands accused of as he was carrying a commercial quantity of cocaine. Police are doubtful regarding Baruch’s insistence that he was unaware there was cocaine in the wall of the suitcase, but Heidy, his aunt, remains confident of his innocence. The Kan News report adds that no one representing the Vishnitzer Rebbe Shlita was present for the remand hearing, seemingly distancing themselves from 22-year-old Baruch despite the fact MK Moses is the Rebbe’s shaliach in Knesset. After the Rebbe announced he is indeed behind Baruch, the entire family and Askonim are now working and preparing for the
