Sefer Torah Donated in Zechus Of Ruchama Aliza Schwab

Last summer Aliza Schwab (Ruchama Aliza Sarah Chana bas Esther Leiba) R”L drowned in a swimming pool in North Miami Beach, Florida (reported HERE on YWN). She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, and was placed on life support. A month after the drowning, her doctors wanted to detach her from life support. Their reason was that according to Florida law she was considered “dead”. The family vehemently opposed it, and Boruch Hashem won. Approximately two months later, she was released from the hospital and sent home where she has been receiving intensive treatment, physical therapy and is fed through a pipe. Last Sunday some 400 members and family members joined in a dedication of a new Sefer Torah in her merit. The Sefer Torah was placed in Chabad Beis Menachem in North Miami Beach where the family has been praying for many years. The Sefer Torah was donated by Yosi Davidson and the Schwab family. Tears of joy were wept during the ceremony. Following the conclusion of writing the letters in the Schwab home, the crowd proceeded in a parade towards the Chabad shul headed by the shliach Rabbi Yosi Marlow. Performing at the Seudas Mitzvah were Mordechai Ben David and his son Yiddele Werdeger. [For all stories involving Ruchama Aliza Schwab, click HERE] (Source: Shturem)

The Doctors have minimized this, but, they have been wrong every step of the way for the past 3 weeks! There is one Aibishter and through all the teflios, cheseds and hachlotas tovahs that klal Yisroel is doing, DIDAH NATZACH is in clear view!!! Although Alizah still remains in critical but stable condition, she is still on a respirator and continues to be off all medication to regulate her bodily functions i.e. temperature, blood pressure, heart rate etc. Please continue the Tefillos!

Flatbush Shomrim Responds to COVID-19, Preventing Hundreds of Hospitalizations With Loaner Oxygen Concentrators

(By Sandy Eller) With relatively few crimes taking place locally during the current pandemic, Flatbush Shomrim Safety Patrol has temporarily steered its community service efforts in a different direction, providing equipment and services to allow less seriously ill COVID-19 patients to weather the virus at home. It was not lost on Shomrim members that their workload was considerably lighter than usual during the coronavirus outbreak while Hatzolah was being slammed with calls and hospitals were overburdened with patients. Trying to find a way to serve the community, Shomrim conferred with the medical community and realized that most people experiencing coronavirus-related breathing difficulties could avoid hospitalizations if they were properly oxygenated. Hitting the phones, Shomrim was able to get approximately a dozen oxygen concentrators donated, but it was clear that significantly more were needed in order to combat the skyrocketing infection rates. More than 250 additional oxygen concentrators were purchased from various sources, the Jewish community at large responding enthusiastically to a Chesed Fund campaign to finance the machines, each of which comes with a not-insignificant $800 price tag. Protocols were put in place to ensure that the equipment would be used properly and serve its intended purpose. Oxygen concentrators, as well as pulse oximeters to monitor heart rates, were loaned only to those with a prescription, while a group of doctors, physician assistants and nurses were recruited to stay in touch with participants on a daily basis. Frequent home visits were made to monitor patients’ progress, with reports given to their primary care doctors to ensure continuity of care. Shomrim coordinator Tzvi Weill estimated that more than 500 home visits were made by the group’s medical team over Pesach and that approximately 30 patients were able to return home on yom tov because they had oxygen concentrators in place. “We were meeting ambulances at people’s homes and had doctors waiting most of the time at the scene for them,” said Weill. Approximately 30 Shomrim members have been making deliveries to patients’ homes from temporary headquarters at the Pozna Shul on Avenue I and Bedford Avenue. Weill estimated that Shomrim’s 300 oxygen concentrators have kept hundreds out of the hospital and members have been fielding requests for other items as well. “We got one call on yom tov for someone who needed an oxygen concentrator, a pulse oximeter and a wheelchair, and our volunteers ran all over to make sure we were able to get everything they needed,” said Weill. “We also had a 24 year old coming home on Pesach after 10 days in the hospital and we arranged a full Pesach for him. Whatever we are being asked to do we just say ‘yes.’” One member of Shomrim’s medical team is Dr. Shlomo Gensler of Israel who had been visiting New York with his family and was unable to return home for Pesach. Having Dr. Gensler on hand was particularly helpful on the eighth day of Pesach, the final day of yom tov for Americans but a regular day for Israelis. “He worked straight through from 7 AM until midnight, non-stop in full HAZMAT gear, going from patient to patient,” said Weill. “It is a real bracha that he was here.” Among the other volunteers who went above and beyond the call of duty were Avivit Mikhli and Chanie

Levaya of Aliza Schwab A”H, After 4 Years Of Fighting From Drowning Accident

YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of Aliza Schwab A”H, daughter of Moshe and Esther Schwab. As was reported by YWN in August of 2007, 4-year-old Aliza had drowned in a swimming pool, and was listed in critical condition. As per the Pask of Hagon Rav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita, the name Ruchama had been added to her name. A month after the drowning, her doctors wanted to detach her from life support. Their reason was that according to Florida law she was considered “dead”. The family vehemently opposed it, and won the battle. Approximately two months later, she was released from the hospital and sent home where she had been receiving intensive treatment, physical therapy and was fed through a pipe. In July of 2008 a Sefer was donated in her Zechus, and may other Chesed projects and much Tefillos were said on her behalf. Unfortunately, Aliza recently took a turn for the worse, and was Niftar earlier today. The Levaya is today, Thursday, at 3:00 PM at Beth David Cemetery, 3701 North 72nd Avenue , Hollywood, Florida. North Miami Beach: Signs of Hope in The Case of Little Aliza Schwab

The parents of a little girl are seeing what they call “signs of hope” more than a year after their daughter was involved in a tragic accident. For more than a year, Esther Schwab has been working with her daughter “Ruchama Aliza Sarah Chana bas Esther Leiba” hour upon hour, day upon day during rehabilitation. On August 23, 2007, when Aliza drowned in the family pool (reported HERE on YWN), doctors said she had no brain activity, and the family was urged to pull her off of life support. “We thank the Lord above for everything that she’s doing,” Esther Schwab, Aliza’s mother, told WSVN. “It’s a tremendous miracle, you know. You can see everything on her with her movements, in response to commands.” They had faith Aliza would recover after that day in October of 2007 when the family took her home from the hospital. Several weeks ago they said they saw a major improvement; Aliza responded to voice commands. Her family was so amazed, they took out the video camera. On the video, little Aliza is asked to move her arm and raise her legs multiple times, and she responds to all commands. Hindy Brycks, her occupational therapist said that there is evidence of brain activity. Her nurse, who has been with her everyday, said Aliza responds to commands on a daily basis. “It’s like you wake up from a dream. Yesterday, she couldn’t do certain things, today she can move. You speak to her, and it’s like she’s talking back to you.” The family is well aware that this is a long process, but they just want to remind everyone how far their little girl has come. “I was amazed, I was really speechless,” said Esther Schwab. Please continue to be Mispallel for her recovery. Click HERE for all stories about Aliza Schwab. (Source: WSVN)

Chizuk for Those in Chinuch

By Rabbi Yair Hoffman for 5tjt.com During the period of COVID-19 – everyone needs chizuk.  It is appropriate, however, in the new zman, in the new semester of school – for the mechanchim and the mechanchos of our children to get a boost of inspiration and chizuk from one of the Gedolim of the previous generation who perhaps personified the concept of bringing the ideals of Torah, Mussar and dedication to chinuch to Klal Yisroel throughout America, Rav Alter Chanoch Henoch Leibowitz zt”l. It is this author’s hope that this audio-enhanced, digitally cleaned, and re-mastered video will inspire thousands of mechanchim in their Avodas HaKodesh.  It is being presented for the Refuah shleimah of three individuals: Ruchama Devorah Leah bas Rochel, a remarkable tzaddaikes Chaim Nachman ben Mindel, a remarkable tzaddik Asher ben Nurit Leah (Obadia), a newly born baby from a wonderful family. May HaKadosh Boruch Hu send them all a complete refuah shleimah. A FURTHER PORTRAIT Rav Leibowitz zt”l had an extraordinary impact on chinuch in the United States.  He was the only son of his saintly father, Rav Dovid Leibowitz, zt’l, founder of Yeshiva Rabbeinu Yisroel Meir HaCohen, commonly known as Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim. The yeshiva was first established in 1933 by Rabbi Dovid Leibowitz, a nephew of the Chofetz Chaim. On December 5th , 1941, Rav Dovid Leibowitz passed away, and his son would take over at the helm of the yeshiva. Rav Henoch Leibowitz molded the yeshiva in the image of the great yeshiva of his father’s rebbe, the Alter of Slabodka. Indeed, Rav Mordechai Shulman, zt’l, a rosh yeshiva in Eretz Yisrael who had intimate knowledge of the Slabodka Yeshiva, commented, “Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim is Slabodka.” Slowly but surely, Rav Henoch Leibowitz shaped and molded his talmidim. He imbued them with a sense of mission to do and work for Klal Yisrael. The greatest achievement for one of his talmidim was to merit to be a marbitz Torah in Klal Yisrael. And harbatzas Torah they did. Rav Henoch Leibowitz’s talmidim opened up high schools across the nation and beyond—in Miami, Los Angeles, Rochester, Milwaukee, and Ottawa, to name just a few. Rav Leibowitz nurtured his talmidim and the mosdos they set up. Soon, Chofetz Chaim became a major force in American Judaism. Entire Torah communities were to spring up around the Chofetz Chaim branches. These communities yielded fruit. Many graduates of the Chofetz Chaim schools entered harbatzas Torah themselves, in every capacity. The attitude of Rav Henoch’s talmidim created a major turning point and shift in the field and in the public perception of Jewish education, which affected all other yeshivos, as well. A career of harbatzas Torah became a lofty profession, something that the elite should aspire to achieve. Rav Leibowitz focused his efforts on developing his students in three major areas. He felt that mechanchim—indeed, everyone—should strive to achieve the highest level of iyun (in-depth study) possible. Toward this end, Rav Leibowitz spent countless hours with his students, teaching them how to unfold the latent processes of reasoning in a Talmudic text. He taught them to highly esteem the words of the Maharsha and to hone in on the essence of an argument between a Maharam and a Maharsha. He taught his talmidim to truly appreciate the words of the Acharonim. He

Israel: The Battle Against the Locusts Continues

Agricultural officials are still being kept busy by the influx of locusts, now reported in three areas of the southern region. This includes near Kadesh Barnea, Kibbutz Ruchama and Revivim. There are “millions” according to a Tuesday evening Rosh Chodesh Nissan 5773 Channel 2 News report. Crop dusting planes have been used along with ‘ground forces’ to douse them with pesticides, which have now led to fears of harming livestock and pets in the area. Ministry of Agriculture officials explain additional swarms have arrived, now significantly closer to Tel Aviv and the center of the county and efforts to eradicate them with pesticides will continue amid a realization there are tens of millions of locusts in Israel today. (YWN – Israel Desk, Jerusalem)
