Financier And Philanthropist Jacob Rothschild Dies At 87

Financier and philanthropist Jacob Rothschild, of the renowned Rothschild banking dynasty, has died at 87, his family said Monday. Rothschild began his career in the family bank, NM Rothschild & Sons, in 1963, before breaking away to start businesses and charitable organizations. His family paid tribute to him in a statement. “Our father Jacob was a towering presence in many people’s lives, a superbly accomplished financier, a champion of the arts and culture, a devoted public servant, a passionate supporter of charitable causes in Israel and Jewish culture, a keen environmentalist and much-loved friend, father and grandfather,” his family said. “He will be buried in accordance with Jewish custom in a small family ceremony and there will be a memorial at a later date to celebrate his life,” they added, without providing any more details. The Rothschild family has an estimated fortune of about 825 million pounds ($1 billion), according to last year’s Sunday Times Rich List. It reportedly gives away millions of pounds to Jewish causes, education and art. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was among the political and cultural leaders who paid tribute to Rothschild. Blair described him as a “towering figure in Britain’s Jewish community” and praised his work advancing peace in the Middle East. Born in Berkshire, west of London, Rothschild was educated at Eton College and studied history at Christ Church College, Oxford University. After leaving the Rothschild bank, he took control of Rothschild Investment Trust, now RIT Capital Partners. He was chairman of the firm, one of the largest investment trusts on the London Stock Exchange, until 2019. He also co-founded the then J Rothschild Assurance Group, now St James’s Place, with Mark Weinberg in 1980, and served as deputy chairman at what was then BSkyB Television, among other roles. In the cultural sector he was chairman of the board of trustees at London’s National Gallery and chair of the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The Rothschild Foundation, the charity which manages the family’s former home, the country house Waddesdon Manor, said Jacob Rothschild’s daughter Hannah would succeed him as its chair. Jacob Rothschild was married for more than 50 years to Serena, who died in 2019. They have four children, Hannah, Beth, Emily and Nat, and many grandchildren. (AP)

Van Gogh Seized From Rothschilds By Nazis To Be Auctioned For Expected $20 Million

A watercolor by Vincent van Gogh that was seized by the Nazis during World War II will be sold next month at auction in New York, where it is expected to fetch a price of $20 million or more, the auction house Christie’s announced. Christie’s is auctioning the 1888 work, “Wheatstacks,” after facilitating negotiations between the Texas oilman’s heirs who own it now and the heirs of two Jewish art collectors who owned it at different times before it was looted by the Nazis. Details of the settlement are confidential, a Christie’s spokesperson said. “Wheatstacks” will be auctioned Nov. 11 along with other artworks from the collection of Edwin L. Cox, a Texas oilman who died last year at age 99. The work depicts three haystacks towering over harvest workers on a bright summer day. It was purchased in 1913 by industrialist Max Meirowsky, who fled Germany for Amsterdam in 1938 fearing Nazi persecution. Meirowsky entrusted “Wheatstacks” to a Paris-based art dealer, who sold it to Alexandrine de Rothschild, a member of the renowned Jewish banking family. Rothschild fled to Switzerland at the onset of World War II and her art collection, including the van Gogh watercolor, was confiscated by the Nazis during the Occupation. It is unclear where the artwork was between the end of the war and the 1970s, but Cox bought it at the Wildenstein gallery in New York in 1979. Giovanna Bertazzoni, vice chair of 20th and 21st century art at Christie’s called the artwork one of the most powerful works on paper by van Gogh ever to appear on the open market. “Everything is breathtaking: the iconic subject, the perfect condition of the gouache, the intensity of the ink in the trademark cross-hatchings and twirls defining the landscape, the ambitious scale of the composition,” she said in a news release Thursday. Prior to the auction, the watercolor will be on view at Christie’s in London from Oct, 17 to Oct. 21, marking the first time that it has been publicly exhibited since a 1905 van Gogh retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Benjamin de Rothschild, the Jewish scion of the famous Rothschild banking dynasty who oversaw the banking empire started by his father in 1953, died of a heart attack on Friday at his home in Pregny, Switzerland at the age of 57. De Rothschild was born in 1963, to Baron Edmond and Baroness Nadine de Rothschild. In 1997, when he was 34, he took over the Switzerland-based Edmond de Rothschild Group named for his father. The Edmond de Rothschild Group owns an investment firm in Israel and has donated significant sums to various causes, including a NIS 50 million donation in April to purchase medical equipment for Israel’s hospitals to assist in the battle against the coronavirus pandemic. De Rothschild, whose assets are estimated today at about $190 billion, is survived by his wife Ariane, who has managed the Rothchild group with him for many years, and four daughters, Alice, Eve, Olivia, and Naomi. Petira of HaRav Zev Rothschild Z”L, Lakewood’s Giant Of Chesed, Niftar From COVID-19

HaRav Zev Rothschild Z”L known to most people as “Zeev”, was ripped from us so suddenly, not just in middle of a chapter, but in middle of enough chapters to fill up book fulls of stories. To even attempt to describe his life in a short article, is simply not possible. In life displayed to the typical person, he hid behind the title of being the owner of NPGS supermarkets in Lakewood. A man who rose to vasikin each morning to Daven without fail, after ending his busy chessed meetings schedule usually at 2-3 o’clock in the morning. After Davening, he prided himself in learning half the day, after which he would arrive in his office, only to be greeted in his waiting room on the way in, by countless amounts of people already waiting on line for an appointment to meet with R’ Zeev. He used his brilliant head and very soft spoken personality so assist countless amounts of people in business decisions, disagreements, marriage issues, issues with the law, financial issues and anything else you could possibly think of. He was a master negotiator, and assisted countless amounts of people in reaching settlement, that both sides were very content with. There was no such thing as, “sorry I just don’t have the time”. He would take impossible challenges and figure out answers, and make it happen some way or other. A typical example, was when his own store, the NPGS on Main St burned down to the ground one night many years ago, not too long before Pesach, and at that time there weren’t any other full size supermarkets in town. People in Lakewood panicked, besides for Zeev. He was on the phone that morning placing orders for a huge tent, generators, refrigeration, and freezers. He had a full stocked supermarket with plenty of time to spare for the Lakewood oylam to be able to shop at discount prices. He was a man that spoke very little, and accomplished an unthinkable amount. He had very strong sheetas in Kashrus, and therefore employed a full time Mashgiach on staff to do their own investigation into every product that came into the store. He would not allow many items to be sold that he felt weren’t up to par. He tried very hard to maintain the old fashion style of shopping, and not turning food shopping into an experience. Last week as the magefa made its rounds, he attempted to change the hours in the store to accommodate many people who are higher risk, and should be able to come shop with very small amounts of people in the store. He made to sure to be very thoughtful of all, besides of himself, and he unfortunately contracted the devastating virus. As his health deteriorated, he checked into the hospital on Motzoi Shabbos. He continued to deteriorate, until being niftar this morning on his 63rd birthday, Zayin Nissan. RABBI AARON KOTLER SUBMITTED THE FOLLOWING TO YWN ABOUT THE NIFTAR: Today Lakewood lost a giant – a brilliant, humble, soft-spoken, huge-hearted Baal Chesed. R’ Zeev Rothschild Z’L. The patron of difficult and lost causes. When there was a Machlokes that was unsolvable – we called R’ Zeev. A family fighting in a divorce with no resolution in sight – we called R’

Interview With Reb Shlomo Rothschild, CEO Of Mayanei Hayeshua

by Rabbi Yair Hoffman YH: Dr. Rothschild z”l, your father, was the founder of Mayanei Hayeshua. What would you say is your father’s greatest legacy? SR: I would say that his greatest legacies are two – kedushat hachaim and kavod ha’adam. Kavod ha’adam is the idea of treating everyone – regardless of age or health with remarkable respect. There are many, many hospitals. I am quoting my father now, and this was something he was fond of saying. But MHMC is different – it was built for the value of life. In an average hospital when they come across a person who has reached ninety years of age, the thinking is that he has lived his life. They make neither the effort to extend it nor do they give him the kavod that he deserves. In MHMC it is the exact opposite. In this hospital, they treat him like he is a head of government. This was my father’s view on what a hospital should be. Boruch hashem, MHMC is an embodiment of that vision. They do everything – even for chayei sha’ah – the short-term extension of life. Every neshama is very special and this is the view that permeates MHMC. These were his greatest legacies. YH: You mentioned that you do everything even for chayei sha’ah – don’t the kupat cholim get upset and not approve the reimbursement for these things? SR: Initially, they gave us a lot of problems. However, when one of the heads of a kupat cholim saw how much we do for every individual, he knew that MHMC was the place to put his father in. Since then, the kupat cholim have come around. What MHMC teaches is the value of life. YH: Can you describe to me how MHMC has grown over the years? As a genuine community hospital, what we do here is provide a hospital that meets the communal needs. Originally, the hospital was housed in only one building. Now we are in three buildings. We have also expanded departments. In the past four years we opened up numerous departments. We just built a psychiatric hospital. We saw that there is a great need for it. We made it very comfortable for the patients and the families. Since our values are the promotion of human dignity, we have made it very special. It is like a hotel – there is an entire building – and in Mayanei Hayeshua’s Mental Health Center there is a separate floor for men and one for women. Once there was never a place for an observant Jew to go. Now there is a place to go and where there is a high rate of cure, boruch hashem. YH: Can you elaborate on any specific psychiatric disorder where MHMC has made an impact? SR: It used to be that anorexia was an area that was completely ignored. After a lot of effort, we now have a Day Care Treatment Center for anorexia and hopefully soon will have an entire department dedicated to treating these patients. Anorexia r”l has a 25% mortality rate. If we did not create this, many of these neshamos would be lost, chalilla. YH: When I am in Eretz Yisroel, I try to attend the shiur that Rav Yitzchok Zilberstein gives to the Rabbonim

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Kurt Rothschild (97) Received ‘Aliya Pin’ And Moved The Young Olim

(VIDEO AND PHOTOS IN EXTENDED ARTICLE) Ninety-seven year old Kurt Rothschild, who made aliya to Israel several years ago from Canada, received the official Bnei Akiva ‘Aliya Pin.’ Kurt was given the honor at a ceremony last Thursday that was attended by hundreds of young people and Bogrim (alumni) of the World Bnei Akiva movement all of whom made Aliya over the past year. Kurt made an inspiring speech regarding the reasons for which he and his wife Edith decided to make Aliya at their respective ages. “It’s a mixture of wanting to be here, identifying with our people, our country, and ending our lives, at some point, here in Israel. But for you life has only started and I greet you for your idealism for the manner in which you settled down here.” “You are youngsters; I was born almost 80 years ago. Almost 98 years ago, I made a little mistake, and I was forced out of Germany where I was born, first to go to England, from England to Canada and now after 75 years in Canada – we’ve ended here, my wife and I,” Kurt said, sharing his family history. “We have children here, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and we are gratified every day of our life that we made this choice, and I wish you and hope for you that you too will never regret the day that you made the move, that you will be gratified of being here together.” “Indeed, Israel is the center of the world. A small country embattled from all sides and in the news of the world almost every day. To walk the streets of Jerusalem is a special privilege, and really unbelievable how we [are] – threatened by Iran, by Syria, by all Arab countries, by the Palestinians – managed to build up a country in such a remarkable, incredible way. In our prayers we say every day how beautiful this country and how it’s ours, but we have to work for it; it doesn’t come free of charge, it comes through effort […] the Jewish people have lost in our days, in my days, almost six million men, women and children [and] will only continue to exist if we work for it, if we help [in] building up this country, if we are loyal to each other and loyal to Israel, this country.” The ceremony was held as part of the Aliya Day party of the Alumni of the World Bnei Akiva movement, directed by Ariel Chesner, and in cooperation with WeWork on Jerusalem’s King George Street. Singer Avi Ganz, who is a contestant on the fourth season of “The Voice,” performed at the ceremony. Roi Abecassis, secretary-general of the World Bnei Akiva movement, noted that “Kurt moved us all. He showed us that Aliya is not the end but only the beginning, of the hard work that every immigrant must do as they find their way in the building of this land, in these days as in past days.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

DC Councilman Infamous For Claiming Jews Control The Weather, Arrested By The FBI

A District of Columbia councilmember known for promoting antisemitic conspiracy theories accepted over $150,000 in bribes in exchange for pressuring D.C. employees to extend city contracts for violence intervention services, authorities alleged in court records unsealed Monday. Trayon White Sr., a Democrat who ran an unsuccessful mayoral campaign in 2022, was arrested Sunday on a federal bribery charge and ordered released from custody after a brief court appearance Monday. His attorney declined to comment on the allegations against him. White agreed in June to accept roughly $156,000 in kickbacks and cash payments in exchange for pressuring government agency employees to extend two companies’ contracts worth over $5 million, authorities alleged in an FBI affidavit. White, 40, also accepted a $20,000 bribe payment to help resolve a contract dispute for one of the companies by pressuring high-level district officials, the affidavit alleges. An FBI informant who agreed to plead guilty to fraud and bribery charges reported giving White gifts including travel to the Dominican Republic and Las Vegas along with paying him bribes, the FBI said. White put his hand to his heart as he entered the courtroom and acknowledged his supporters who attended the hearing. One supporter held her hand to her mouth and sobbed from the gallery. White answered routine questions from the judge but did not comment on the allegations. The magistrate judge warned White he could be jailed before trial if he violates any conditions of his release. White, who has served on the D.C. council since 2017, represents a predominantly Black ward where the poverty rate is nearly twice as high as the overall district. He is running for re-election in November against a Republican challenger. White was one of two D.C. council members whom Mayor Muriel Bower defeated two years ago in the Democratic primary. White, a former grassroots community activist, was a protégé of former Mayor Marion Barry, who also represented the same ward as White on the council. In March 2018, White posted a video on his Facebook page claiming that an unexpected snowfall was because of “the Rothschilds controlling the climate to create natural disasters.” The Rothschilds, a Jewish family that was prominent in the banking industry, are a frequent subject of conspiracy theories. At the time, White said he was unaware that the weather-related conspiracy theory is antisemitic. A video later surfaced of White pushing a similar conspiracy theory during a meeting of top city officials. He posed a question based on the stereotypical premise that the Rothschilds controlled the World Bank and the federal government. (AP)

How Jewish Artwork has Changed Over History

In this guide, we track the evolution of Jewish art to understand where it has come from and where it might be heading in the future. How Jewish Artwork has Changed Over History Judaism is one of the world’s oldest religions. It has contributed enormously to human culture and history over this time, and it continues to do so in our modern era. Jewish art encompasses a broad spectrum, you only need to visit a store like nadavart.com to appreciate this. In this guide, we take a look back over the history of Jewish art to learn where it came from and where it might be heading in the future. Read on to learn more. Early Jewish Art Judaism as a faith originated in around 1800 BC. This highlights just how old the religion is. Jewish art is almost as old as the religion itself, with the earliest Jewish artists including biblical figures such as Bezalel. These early Jewish artists helped design and decorate temples and places of worship, using their artistic skills to mold the materials they had available into beautiful structures and monuments. Jewish art flourished in this early period. The Jewish mantra of hiddur mitzvah encourages the creation of sacred items and spaces of great beauty, which helped motivate Jewish artists to continue working. Jewish Art in the Middle Ages Throughout the Middle Ages, many Jewish people lived under strict laws and rules that forbade the production of many forms of art. As a result, much of the Jewish art from the Middle Ages comes in the form of intricately decorated manuscripts and scriptures, as well as in the architecture and design of synagogues and temples. While Jewish art from this period is undeniably beautiful, one can’t help but wonder what people of the time could have created if they had been free of the shackles of authoritarian rule. The Renaissance and Enlightenment Through the Renaissance and Enlightenment, artwork and creative practices flourished, with Jewish artists given much more freedom to express their faith through their work. Jewish communities in Italy were particularly prolific during this time. with famous works including The Rothschild Mahzor and The Mishneh Torah of Maimonides. As we entered the 17th century, a number of fantastic Jewish artists rose to prominence. Daniel Moritz Oppenheimer, Aleksander Gierymski and Marc Chagall are considered among the best Jewish artists of all time.   By this point in history, Jewish art took influence from other artistic styles. For example, we can see a lot of impressionist influences in Jewish art from this period. Artists were able to use these influences to help better convey the messages in their religious art. Jewish Art in the Modern Era Jewish art, like all art, is constantly changing and evolving. Today, it’s enjoying a sustained period of success, with artists around the world producing fantastic work. The proliferation of Jewish art today is thanks, in part, to social media. Jewish artists can now advertise their work to art lovers from all over the world, either on their own social media pages or in Jewish internet communities. Conclusion The evolution of Jewish art is a fascinating subject. By tracking the progress of Jewish art throughout the ages, we can clearly see how work was affected by social and political conditions, and it gives us

Tel Aviv Municipality Bans Tefilla With Metchitzah in Public Space

A resident of Tel Aviv who submitted a request to the municipality to hold a Yom Ha’atzmaut tefillah on Rothschild Boulevard received a response that the tefillah will only be approved if no mechitzos between men and women are used. The response came despite the fact that Arabs held an Eid al-Fitr prayer in Tel Aviv on Friday with complete separation between men and women, including physical barriers. Tel Aviv Deputy Mayor Reuven Lediansky clarified the decision on his Facebook page, writing: “There won’t be a tefillah with mechitzot between men and women in Tel Aviv. Not on Rothschild Boulevard and not anywhere else in the public space. Yesterday an application was received by the Tel Aviv Municipality to hold a tefillah on Yom Ha’atzmauet with mechitzot between men and women. The municipality’s response was that ‘there will be no separation by physical means‼️’” With the elections around the corner, Lediansky took advantage of the request to boast about his secular agenda to voters, declaring: “I intend to lead a secular front that will ensure the interests of Tel Aviv and you residents – throughout the entire term – a period of five years. I have the energy, determination, and experience to protect a secular and liberal Tel Aviv. No religious coercion, no gender segregation and no religionization!” In response, Kol B’Ramah reporter Moshe Glassner posted a photo of the Eid al-Fitr prayer, stating: “But the Tel Aviv Municipality is actually attentive to the needs of religion, if of course, you belong to the right religion: This directive does not apply to the Arabs who held the Eid al-Fitr prayer in Tel Aviv last Friday with complete segregation, including barriers…because racism towards Jews is fine, but a separate seating by consent is coercion.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Evacuations Ordered as California Storm Knocks Out Power

Officials in California ordered evacuations in a high-risk coastal area where mudslides killed 23 people in 2018 as a huge storm barreled into the state Wednesday, bringing high winds and rain that threatened widespread flooding and knocked out power to more than 100,000 people. The storm was expected to dump up to 6 inches (152.4 millimeters) of rain in parts of the San Francisco Bay Area where most of the region would remain under flood warnings into late Thursday night. In Southern California, the storm was expected to peak in intensity overnight into early Thursday morning with Santa Barbara and Ventura counties likely to see the most rain, forecasters said. “We anticipate that this may be one of the most challenging and impactful series of storms to touch down in California in the last five years,” said Nancy Ward, the new director of the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. San Francisco Mayor London Breed said at a news conference that the city was “preparing for a war.” Crews cleared clogged storm drains, tried to move homeless people into shelters and passed out emergency supplies and ponchos to those who refused to go. The city distributed so many sandbags to residents that supplies temporarily ran out. Powerful winds gusting to 85 mph (136 kmh) or more forced the cancellation of more than 70 flights at San Francisco International Airport and downed trees and power lines. Firefighters rescued a family after a tree fell onto their car. The fire department reported “large pieces of glass” fell off the Fox Plaza tower near the Civic Center, although no injuries were reported. It was “highly possible” the damage to the skyscraper was wind-related, the department tweeted. The new storm left more than 100,000 customers in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Central Coast without power. The storm is one of three so-called atmospheric river storms in the last week to reach the drought-stricken state. California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency to allow for a quick response and to aid in cleanup from another powerful storm that hit just days earlier. In Southern California, evacuations were ordered for those living in areas burned by three recent wildfires in Santa Barbara County, where heavy rain forecast for overnight could cause widespread flooding and unleash debris flows. County officials did not have a firm number for how many people were under evacuation orders, but Susan Klein-Rothschild, a spokesperson in the county’s emergency operations center, said sheriff’s deputies went door-to-door and contacted at least 480 people. Among the towns ordered to evacuate was Montecito, where five years ago huge boulders, mud and debris swept down mountains through the town to the shoreline, killing 23 people and destroying more than 100 homes. The town is home to many celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan. “What we’re talking about here is a lot of water coming off the top of the hills, coming down into the creeks and streams and as it comes down, it gains momentum and that’s what the initial danger is,” Montecito Fire Department Chief Kevin Taylor said. Elsewhere, a 45-mile (72-kilometer) stretch of the coastal Highway 1 running through Big Sur was closed Wednesday evening in anticipation of flooding and rock falls. Further north, a 25-mile

Ben-Gvir: “My Friends On The Left, We’re Brothers!”

Otzma Yehudit chairman Itamar Ben-Gvir published a special column in Yisrael Hayom on Monday in which he tried to reassure the left-wing sector that he isn’t the racist provocative politician that the media is making him out to be and he has no goals of turning Israel into a “halachic state.” Ben-Gvir began the column, entitled My Brothers On The Left, This Isn’t The End Of Your Country, by writing: “My friends on the left, we’re brothers! Yes, despite the controversy, despite four election cycles that led to polarized discourse and deepened division, despite the demonization and hatred – we’re brothers!” “The country isn’t ruined for you. You and we together are the State and we have no intention of changing that.” “I hear about the fear of ‘religious coercion,’ and I ask myself – who will be coerced? My brother Shai who doesn’t wear a kippah, or Tzvika Fogel and Almog Cohen, ‘secular’ candidates that I insisted on bringing with me to Otzma Yehudit?” “I hear about the fear of ‘thought police’ or banning [pride] demonstrations, and I remind you that the ones who fought more than all the ‘civil rights’ organizations for freedom of expression and the right to demonstrate were us!” “What saddened me the most was hearing a journalist ask if and when I’ll be in an influential position, will the pride parade be secured – are you normal? Do I want a heinous murder of a girl attending the parade? Of course not. And even if I’m not enthusiastic about the parade, I’ll make sure that the lives of the marchers are protected at all costs.” “I hear all those that remind me of the symbol of prime minister Yitzchak Rabin (27 years ago!) and the photo of Baruch Goldstein, but I remind you of the path I’ve gone through since then and the change: I matured, became more moderate and reached an understanding that life is more complex.” “Today, I don’t view all the people of the left as one entity. I definitely differentiate between [Jewish Joint List MK] Ofer Cassif and the Zionist leftists who love Israel.” “Don’t make a mistake, we’ll make sure that a nationalist right-wing government is established here, a government that will restore personal security to the streets, governance to the Negev and the Galil, and will hold its head high and not bow down in the face of threats. I don’t mean to apologize and grovel about who I am but I just think that if you get to know me, you will change your mind about me and my positions. Too many Israelis have feared enemies at home and abroad for too many days in too many places. No more.” “The reality in which Jews everywhere are fleeing from mobs rioting in the heart of Jerusalem is a defeatist diasporic reality. Mothers in Be’er Sheva shouldn’t have to fear for the safety of their teenage daughters in the mall or on the street; a soldier who goes on leave in Akko shouldn’t have to take off his uniform when he walks home. The startup and cyber nation has lost its deterrence at home. Running away, bowing down and apologizing have become the norm – that’s what the elections were about and we won the elections on this

New York Museums to Disclose Artwork Looted by Nazis

Museums in New York that exhibit artworks looted by Nazis during the Holocaust are now required by law to let the public know about those dark chapters in their provenance through placards displayed with the stolen objects. At least 600,000 pieces of art were looted from Jewish people before and during World War II, according to experts. Some of that plunder wound up in the world’s great museums. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a law in August requiring museums to put up signs identifying pieces looted by the Nazis from 1933 through 1945. The new rule comes as many museums in the U.S. and Europe are also reckoning with collections that contain numerous objects looted from Asia, Africa and other places during centuries of colonialism. It isn’t clear how many pieces of art now on display will wind up being labeled as Nazi loot, and disagreements have already arisen over certain artworks with a complicated history. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City, said it had identified 53 works in its collection as having been seized or sold under duress during the Nazi era. All of those objects were obtained by the museum after being returned to their rightful owners. But Andrea Bayer, the museum’s deputy director for collections and administration, said the public still should know about their history. “People should be aware of the terrible cost to people during World War II as these confiscations took place, and how these peoples’ treasures that they loved and had been in their families, had been torn from them at the same time their lives were disrupted,” she said. The museum, however, does not intend to put up such a sign on a Picasso painting called “The Actor,” which it received as a gift in 1952. That painting was once owned by Jewish businessman Paul Leffmann, who fled Germany — first for Italy, then ultimately to Brazil — to escape the Nazis. As Leffmann liquidated assets in 1938, he sold the painting to Paris art dealers for $13,200. Leffmann’s great-grandniece, Laurel Zuckerman, sued the Metropolitan Museum in 2016, claiming it was a bargain-basement sale price that reflected the family’s desperation to flee Europe. The museum countered that the price was actually high for an early Picasso at the time. A U.S. court eventually dismissed the lawsuit. Lawrence Kaye, one of the lawyers who represented Zuckerman, said that despite that outcome, the museum should still put up a placard with the painting’s disputed history. “I believe the law would cover this piece. It was dismissed on technical grounds and I believe under the broad definition of what this law means under the statute, it should be covered,” Kaye said. Researching the provenance of an object has gotten easier in the digital age and some museums have launched efforts to identify artworks with a problematic ownership history. New York law had already required museums to report works believed to have been stolen during the Nazi period to the Art Loss Register, the world’s largest database on stolen art. A U.S. law passed in 2016 provides victims of Holocaust-era persecution and their heirs a fair opportunity to recover works of art taken by the Nazis. “This law did things legally that made it possible for people to make claims and sue,”

France’s Youngest President Wins Again, Troubles And All

In just five years as France’s president, Emmanuel Macron has gone from a young newbie in politics to a key world player and weighty decision-maker in the European Union who has been deeply involved in efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine. And now he has won a second term, the first French president to do so in a generation. The outspoken 44-year-old centrist, with his non-stop diplomatic activism, doesn’t always get his way but has earned his place on the international scene. He is expected to pivot back to his work on Ukraine. At home, Macron managed to regain some popularity after the “yellow vest” protests against social injustice sent his approval to record lows in 2018. Opinion polls say many French praise his presidential stature and consider him up to the job to face major global crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine conflict. They also show he is often perceived as arrogant and out of touch with ordinary people. Macron has notably been dubbed “president of the rich,” especially during the yellow vest crisis. Some critics also denounce a perceived authoritarian attitude, holding him responsible for violent incidents involving police during street protests. The job of president is his first elected office, though he came with a strong pedigree. Macron studied at France’s elite school Ecole Nationale d’Administration, and he was a senior civil servant, then a banker at Rothschild for a few years, then economic adviser to Socialist President Francois Hollande. He emerged from that backstage role onto the political scene when he served as economy minister in Hollande’s government from 2014 to 2016. A series of political surprises — including a corruption scandal involving a key rival — thrust Macron toward presidential victory in 2017. He easily beat far-right candidate Marine Le Pen in their runoff that year on promises to free up France’s economy to boost job creation and attract foreign investment. He beat her again Sunday, but the race was closer and Macron acknowledged that some voters had backed him only to keep Le Pen out of the presidency. Macron, who describes himself as “a president who believes in Europe,” argues the EU is the way for France to be stronger in a global world. A strong advocate of entrepreneurial spirit, he has eased rules to hire and fire workers and to made it harder to get unemployment benefits. Critics accuse him of destroying worker protections. Then the pandemic hit, and he acknowledged the crucial role of the state in supporting the economy, spending massively and vowing to support employees and business via public aid “whatever it costs.” In his biggest campaign rally near Paris earlier this month, Macron paid an emotional tribute to his wife, Brigitte, the person “I care the most about.” They could be seen on the stadium’s giant screens sending kisses to each other. On Sunday evening, they arrived hand in hand on the plaza near the Eiffel Tower where Macron made his victory speech. As first lady, Brigitte Macron, 24 years his senior, has been involved in charities and other programs promoting culture, education and health. Their romance started when he was a student at the high school where she was teaching in northern France. At the time a married mother of three, she was supervising the

Ex-Dem. Congresswoman Says Jews Caused 9/11, Twitter Refuses To Remove Post

Former Democratic Congresswoman and Green Party presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney tweeted on Monday that Jews were responsible for 9/11. The tweet, titled: “The Final Piece of the Puzzle” shows a hand holding a puzzle piece with the word Zionists on it placing the piece in a puzzle featuring a picture of the burning Twin Towers and the words “did it.” In other words: “The final piece of the puzzle” is that the “Zionists did it.” McKinney even pinned the tweet so it will be the first one seen on her Twitter account. She also posted it on her Facebook account. Twitter has refused to remove the tweet, saying that McKinney’s statement is “strong political commentary,” the American Jewish Committee reported. .@Twitter won't remove @Cynthiamckinney's tweet that says "Zionists" are responsible for 9/11, claiming it's "strong political commentary." This antisemitic conspiracy theory promotes violence against Jews. Twitter must stand against antisemitism. Remove the tweet now. pic.twitter.com/K5806pWdPg — American Jewish Committee (@AJCGlobal) June 28, 2021 Two days before the 9/11 tweet, McKinney posted a tweet referencing Rothschild conspiracy claims, and a day before that she posted an article about the 751 unmarked graved found at the site of a former residential school for Native Canadians in Saskatchewan, commenting that: “They were killing First Nations children like crazy; kind of like the way Israel treats Palestinian children.” In May 2020, McKinney tweeted that “the figure [of Jews killed in the Holocaust] wasn’t six million after all.” In January 2020, she tweeted that “Guaranteed: Trump’s statement about Soleimani and Iran was written in Israel. ALL LIES. Donald Trump [is a] Zionist puppet.” In 2009, McKinney claimed that the “pro-Israel lobby” sabotaged her political career. The Anti-Defamation League summed up McKinney’s history of hatred and anti-Semitism: “Cynthia McKinney, a former U.S. Congresswoman from Georgia and 2008 Green Party presidential candidate, participated in a variety of anti-Israel campaigns and events in 2009. McKinney has a history of using anti-Israel rhetoric, including accusing the pro-Israel lobby of sabotaging her political career and alleging that Israel of committing genocide, apartheid and war crimes. She has repeatedly condemned U.S. support for Israel.” “She has also taken part in multiple organized efforts to bring Westerners to Gaza in order to attract media attention to their anti-Israel agenda. McKinney has used the attention these campaigns have received to further promote her opposition, and explicit hostility, toward Israel and Zionism. While McKinney has supported anti-Semitic groups such as the Nation of Islam and the New Black Panther Party and aggressively opposed Israel and its supporters for many years, her efforts in 2009 demonstrate the degree to which her opposition has become a priority.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Report: Pandemic Amped Up Anti-Semitism, Forced It Online

Coronavirus lockdowns last year shifted some anti-Semitic hatred online, where conspiracy theories blaming Jews for the pandemic’s medical and economic devastation abounded, Israeli researchers reported Wednesday. That’s raised concerns about a rise in anti-Semitism in the post-pandemic world. The findings, which came in an annual report by Tel Aviv University’s researchers on anti-Semitism, show that the social isolation of the pandemic kept Jews away from those who wish to harm them. The number of violent incidents toward Jews across some 40 countries dropped last year, from 456 to 371 — roughly the same levels the researchers reported from 2016 to 2018. Online, the scene was much different, researchers reported — a potential warning sign that as pandemic restrictions ease, hateful conduct toward Jews could intensify as it has during some of humanity’s other historic struggles. “Anti-Jewish hatred online never stays online,” said Moshe Kantor, president of the European Jewish Congress. “We have to be prepared that anti-Semitic conspiracy theories could lead to physical attacks on Jews when lockdowns end.” Tel Aviv University’s Kantor Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry releases its report every year on the eve of Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day, which begins Wednesday at sundown. The research team found that anti-Semitic conspiracy theories blossomed as soon as the coronavirus began spreading around the world in February 2020. When the world’s health authorities declared a pandemic in March, people were forced inside and away from each other. But there, they went online and many were were exposed to conspiracy theories blaming an array of ethnic and religious groups for the catastrophe, including Jews. The false theories generally went like this, according to the report: Jews and Israelis created and spread the virus so that they could rescue the world with lucrative vaccines. The trend echoed an ancient form of anti-Semitism that blamed Jews for spreading illnesses and other tragedies. Researchers also noted that conspiracy theorists drew false comparisons between the health restrictions and vaccines and the Holocaust, in which the Nazis murdered more than 6 million Jews. The anti-Semitic trend waned in the summer, the report said, but surged in the fall with news of the development of vaccines. A divisive presidential election campaign in the U.S., meanwhile, served as fertile ground for the rise of conspiracy theories, it said. Online, anti-Semitic messages spread, including worrying anecdotal evidence that those repeating them hailed not just from extremist circles but from “populations with no well-defined political or ideological identities,” the report said. Those blamed included the Rothschild family, billionaire George Soros and ultra-Orthodox Jews who flouted safety rules and among whom the virus surged. Meanwhile, in 2020, the number of physical injuries in anti-Semitic incidents decreased by 37%, from 170 in 2019, to 107. Damage to private property also dropped by 35%, from 130 to 84 incidents, according to the report. But other evidence suggests that hateful sentiment still existed, the report found. Worrying trends included gradual rises in violent incidents in the United States and a sharper increase in Germany. In both countries, vandalism accounted for most of the incidents. Desecrations of Jewish cemeteries and other memorials rose by a quarter in that time period. The number of vandalized synagogues also increased, by 19%. Big media platforms like Twitter and Facebook, meanwhile, cracked down on racist and

The History of Lending in Judaism – From the Ancient Times to the Modern-Day

The Jewish people have often been associated with lending, dating back from ancient times to modern times.    While some of this is credited to their skill for underwriting processes, sound business planning, and mathematical skills, there are also key religious and societal roots dating back centuries.    Jews have historically been well-represented in the finance and business sector and continue to hold their place in modern-day lending in investment banking, property finance, and even micro-lending.   The Original Loans   The concept of money dates back to the Stone Ages, although not quite as we know it today. During this period, we first started to recognize organized trade of materials, initially obsidian, in exchange for goods and services.   In fact, during this time, temples were multi-purpose, not only as places of worship but also as banks. This is where they can first trace back the idea of lending agreements and charging interest. Although, unlike nowadays, the trade currency would be cattle and grain instead of what we now recognize as money. In the Babylonian era, the price of silver started to be defined, and loans of silver were introduced with a specific interest rate.   Lending has also been traced back to Ancient Greece with the first record of “collateral”. Pawnbrokers historically collected collateral from borrowers to mitigate the risk of the lender. This concept still exists today and is one of the foundations of secure business loans.   Middle Ages   In the Middle Ages, any monetary loans were governed by religion. Both the Christian Bible and the Islam Qur’an outlawed lending with interest, known as usury. However, lending was permitted by the Jewish Torah. According to Jewish scripture, Jews were allowed to lend money although they were only allowed to charge interest to gentiles (non-Jews).    Many suggest that this triggered further anti-semitism as Jews garnered a reputation for handling money – something which ultimately led to their persecution and, in some countries expulsion. In 1190 AD, the York Massacre saw around 150 Jews cornered into a tower by locals who did not want to repay their debts. The result was forced conversion to Christianity, although the victims chose to take their lives.    Jews acted as the middleman, first borrowing money from Counts or Noblemen, and then loaning money to non-Jewish peasants. With typical interest rates of 30-40%, these were loans which were very hard for the peasants to repay. However, if not repaid, the Jews would be killed by the nobleman from whom they originally borrowed the money.   Aaron of Lincoln   In the 12th Century, Aaron of Lincoln, an English Jewish financier, was thought to be the wealthiest man in England, with his wealth superseding that of England’s King. He established what is now recognized as one of the first banking associations.    Operating through agents, his specialty business was lending money to construct abbeys and monasteries across the country. Aaron was able to monetize land, corn, properties, and armor. Following his death, his assets were claimed by the English crown. This was the first incident in history for the separate division of an “exchequer”.   The Birth of International Lending    The 1800s saw a time in which loans became more widely available to the general population and saw the origins

Mass Purim Party In Tel Aviv: “The Deaths Are On Your Consciences,” Health Minister Says

Hundreds of Israelis participated in a mass Purim party at the Carmel Market in Tel Aviv on Wednesday night, a day ahead of the government-imposed three-day curfew over Purim in order to prevent mass gatherings. Videos and photos of the party on Israeli media showed large crowds partying in the market, with no social distancing or wearing of masks. Police arrived at the scene and the partyers fled, avoiding fines, but the partyers then resumed the fun at Rothschild Boulevard. Health Minister Yuli Edelstein slammed the party revelers, telling Army Radio on Thursday morning that the future loss of lives and the closing of businesses will be on their consciences. “You see how young people are also becoming seriously ill, how death comes to all ages. Come to your senses! It’s not too late.” Coronavirus czar Prof. Nachman also condemned the “outrageous photos of irresponsible mass celebrations and gatherings. The responsibility is in the hands of the public, and it is very unfortunate that this is how they choose to behave these days when the morbidity figures are still high.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

REPORT: Ivanka Wants Donald To Cut Ties With Marjorie Taylor Greene Over Anti-Semitism

Ivanka Trump is privately urging her father – Donald – to cut ties with Marjorie Taylor Greene fearing the Jewish community will hold it against her in a possible election bid, the Daily Mail is reporting. Controversial Congresswoman Taylor Greene has expressed her belief in the QAnon conspiracy theory which is rich in anti-Semitism. She also signed an online posting in 2018 that accused Jewish billionaire George Soros and the Rothschild family of being involved in the conspiracy, which alleges that powerful figures run an international pedophile ring and influence world policy. Speculation has been swirling for months that Ivanka will run for the US Senate in Florida in 2022. Additionally, the Daily Mail reports that Ivanka is setting her sights on the 2022 senatorial race to challenge Marco Rubio. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

Inauguration Sows Doubt Among QAnon Conspiracy Theorists

For years, legions of QAnon conspiracy theory adherents encouraged one another to “trust the plan” as they waited for the day when President Donald Trump would orchestrate mass arrests, military tribunals and executions of his Satan-worshipping, child-sacrificing enemies. Keeping the faith wasn’t easy when Inauguration Day didn’t usher in “The Storm,” the apocalyptic reckoning that they have believed was coming for prominent Democrats and Trump’s “deep state” foes. QAnon followers grappled with anger, confusion and disappointment Wednesday as President Joe Biden was sworn into office. Some believers found a way to twist the conspiracy theory’s convoluted narrative to fit their belief that Biden’s victory was an illusion and that Trump would secure a second term in office. Others clung to the notion that Trump will remain a “shadow president” during Biden’s term. Some even floated the idea that the inauguration ceremony was computer-generated or that Biden himself could be the mysterious “Q,” who is purportedly a government insider posting cryptic clues about the conspiracy. For many others, however, Trump’s departure sowed doubt. “I am so scared right now, I really feel nothing is going to happen now,” one poster wrote on a Telegram channel popular with QAnon believers. “I’m just devastated.” Mike Rothschild, author of a forthcoming book on QAnon called “The Storm is Upon Us,” said it’s too early to gauge whether the wave of disillusionment that swept through the QAnon ranks Wednesday is a turning point or a fleeting setback for the movement. “I think these people have given up too much and sacrificed too much in their families and in their personal lives,” he said. “They have believed this so completely that to simply walk away from it is just not in the realm of reality for most of these people.” On Wednesday, as it became obvious that Biden’s inauguration would proceed, many QAnon message boards and online groups were bombarded by hecklers and trolls making fun of the conspiracy. Some longtime QAnon posters said they planned to step away from social media, if only temporarily. “Trump has said, ‘THE BEST IS YET TO COME.’ I’m not giving up,” Telegram user Qtah wrote in an announcement to his 30,000 subscribers that he was taking a social media break. Some groups seized the moment to try to recruit disillusioned QAnon supporters to white supremacy and other far-right neofascist movements like the Proud Boys. On Wednesday, for example, an anonymous poster on 4chan posited in a thread that “this would be the perfect time to start posting Nat Soc propaganda in Q anon groups. Clearly, this is a very low point for Q believers, and once people have been broken, they will look for ways to cling back to hope again.” Nat Soc stands for national socialism, commonly referred to as Nazism. QAnon emerged in 2017 through anonymous, fringe online message boards before migrating to Twitter, Facebook and other mainstream platforms that were slow to purge the conspiracy theory from their sites. Although Facebook and Twitter platforms vowed last year to rid their sites of QAnon, accounts with thousands of loyal followers remained until this month, when the tech companies finally disabled thousands of users who used violent rhetoric to encourage protests of the election results at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Twitter announced it had suspended more

Wisconsin Republican Party Says Hackers Stole $2.3 Million

Hackers have stolen $2.3 million from the Wisconsin Republican Party’s account that was being used to help reelect President Donald Trump in the key battleground state, the party’s chairman told The Associated Press on Thursday. The party noticed the suspicious activity on Oct. 22 and contacted the FBI on Friday, said Republican Party Chairman Andrew Hitt. Hitt said the FBI is investigating. FBI spokesman Brett Banner said that, per policy, “the FBI is not permitted to confirm or deny an investigation.” The Wisconsin Department of Justice, which has a center focused on cyber crime able to assist if requested, has not been asked to investigate, said spokeswoman Rebecca Ballweg. The alleged hack was discovered less than two weeks before Election Day, as Trump and Democratic rival Joe Biden made their final push to win Wisconsin and its 10 electoral votes. Trump won the state by fewer than 23,000 votes in 2016 and was planning his third visit in seven days on Friday. Biden also planned to campaign in Wisconsin on Friday. Polls have consistently shown a tight race in the state, usually with Biden ahead by single digits and within the margin of error. Hitt said he was not aware of any other state GOP being targeted for a similar hack, but state parties were warned at the Republican National Convention this summer to be on the lookout for cyber attacks. “We have been in contact with the state party and are assisting them through this process,” said Republican National Committee spokesman Michael Ahrens. “The RNC never left Wisconsin after 2016, and we are confident that our ground game and the millions we are spending on TV and digital will deliver us another win there in 2020.” The reported hack exposed new tensions in the final days of the race between the Trump campaign and the state party, which overspent and failed to properly account for its expenditures in 2018, leading to a shakeup in top party leadership. Campaign officials in Wisconsin learned about the alleged hack from media reports and were furious that state officials had not briefed them on how it might impact operations, according to a Trump campaign official who requested anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss internal conversations. But Trump’s director of battleground strategy, Nick Trainer, said the national campaign was notified immediately. “I personally received a call notifying me as a senior official for the campaign,” he said. “We have complete trust in the Republican Party of Wisconsin and know they will deliver the state for the President in four days.” There have been more than 800 attempted phishing attacks for financial gain targeting the Wisconsin Democratic Party this campaign cycle, but none has been successful, said party spokeswoman Courtney Beyer. The alleged hack is “certainly embarrassing” for Republicans, said Matt Rothschild, leader of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, an independent group that tracks campaign donations and spending. “It’s got to hurt them and their ability to function at this crucial moment,” he said. “I can’t see any upside for them in this matter.” Hitt stressed that the money stolen was for services already rendered. “While a large sum of money was stolen, our operation is running at full capacity,” he said. Hitt said the hackers manipulated invoices from four vendors who were

Israel’s 1st “Cereal Café” Opens In Tel Aviv

Israel’s first “cereal café,” Lulu&co., opened last week on Rothschild Street in Tel Aviv. With restaurants closing around the world due to the coronavirus pandemic, it’s a brave time to open a new restaurant or café. In fact, the largest and most famous cereal café in the world, the Cereal Killer Café in London, announced its closure in July as a result of the pandemic. There are a number of cereal cafés in the US and following the opening of the Cereal Killer Café in London in 2014, the trend spread to the rest of the UK, throughout Europe and on to Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Singapore and now Israel. Lulu&co. is described by its owners as styled in “Instamgrammy decor.” It’s the first breakfast bar in Israel that will combine breakfast cereals from Israel and the world with Italian gelato ice cream prepared in a special way via a machine imported from New York, which mixes the ice cream with the customer’s choice of cereal and topping. Customers can choose a bowl of cereal for NIS 16 and pour toppings over it including flavored marshmallows, chocolate-coated cornflakes, teddy bears, chocolate pearls, oreos, sweet popcorn, and coated pretzels, and sauces like strawberry sauce, cherries, salted caramel, peanut butter, chocolate, and honey techina. This is of course not an endorsement of the café for YWN readers since we don’t have information on whether it has a kashrus certificate or not. Anyone who is interested in visiting the café should first inquire about its kashrus status. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Hold On: Surviving the Days before Moshiach

Before Moshiach comes, Hashem will stretch a rope from one end of the world to the other and shake it vigorously…. These turbulent times are testing our faith in Hashem. We must hold on tightly until the end.” -The Chofetz Chaim In a Zoom Press Conference held on June 29, Roy Neuberger’s latest book, Hold On: Surviving the Days before Moshiach (Mosaica Press), was officially launched. Participants included journalists and influential writers who were especially thrilled to hear the news of Roy’s latest offering during these stressful times. Roy and his wife Leah, who doubles as his editor, discussed the creative process of authoring the book, as well as his earlier books- including the presciently-titled 2020 Vision, a novel published in 2008 that tells the tale of a massive terror attack against the United States, curtailment of international travel and the isolation of Jews – as well as a worldwide virus pandemic – leading up to the arrival of Moshiach. This all takes place in the year 2020! For the first three decades of his life, Roy Neuberger had no connection with his Jewish heritage. Only at age thirty-one did Roy discover his Creator, and since then he has not stopped energetically going forth to bring the message of Judaism to all. In his first book, From Central Park to Sinai: How I found My Jewish Soul – the number one Jewish bestseller for months upon its publication – Roy describes his past; in Hold On, he uses humor and a penetrating gaze to chart a path to the future. He gives hope and a concrete plan for surviving the turbulent “Days Before Moshiach.” As one reviewer writes, “The author of the widely acclaimed From Central Park to Sinai and 2020 Vision has now penned perhaps his most important work yet… Passionate, powerful and thought-provoking.” At the Press Conference, following a discussion of the book, participants discussed current world upheavals as well as questions of aliyah and redemption. At the close of the event, participants felt uplifted. This is a book that inspires hope and serves as a true guidebook for its readers. “Hold On” is available at Jewish booksellers worldwide, online at Feldheim.com and Amazon.com as well as Roy Neuberger’s website at www.2020vision.co.il Holding On By Chaim Gitman Like many of my fellow People of the Book, I enjoy reading. When a friend recently gave me a copy of Roy Neuberger’s newest offering, “Hold On: Surviving the Days Before Moshiach,” I surprised myself by reading through it in one sitting. I’d heard Roy’s name before, but I was not familiar with his background; after reading Hold On, I felt that I had to meet the author in person. A quick phone call was all it took to receive a warm invitation to the Neuberger home. When I met with Roy (Yisroel) and Leah Neuberger last week in their lovely home in Jerusalem, the first thing that struck me was their warmth and banter. Well into his eighth decade, Roy has a special energy about him, in an almost mischievous way; Leah, a true ezer k’negdo, counters that with her careful, aristocratic approach.  And yes, she’s really an ezer k’negdo– Leah is the editor of all of Roy’s books. I’m instantly smiling as I am led into their living room

George Soros Conspiracy Theories Surge As Protests Sweep US

They say he hires protesters and rents buses to transport them. Some say he has people stash piles of bricks to be hurled into glass storefronts or at police. George Soros, the billionaire investor and philanthropist who has long been a target of conspiracy theories, is now being falsely accused of orchestrating and funding the protests over police killings of Black people that have roiled the United States. Amplified by a growing number of people on the far right, including some Republican leaders, online posts about Soros have skyrocketed in recent weeks. They have been accompanied by online ads bought by conservative groups that call on authorities to “investigate George Soros for funding domestic terrorism and his decades-long corruption.” Soros, 89, has donated billions of dollars of his personal wealth to liberal and anti-authoritarian causes around the world, making him a favored target among many on the right. The Hungarian-American, who is Jewish, has also been the subject of anti-Semitic attacks and conspiracy theories for decades. Such hoaxes can now travel farther and faster with social media. Over just four days in late May, negative Twitter posts about Soros spiked from about 20,000 a day to more than 500,000 a day, according to an analysis by the Anti-Defamation League. The Institute for Strategic Dialogue, a London think tank focused on extremism and polarization, found an even more pronounced jump on Facebook, where there were 68,746 mentions of Soros in May. The previous record of 38,326 Soros mentions was in October 2018, when angry posts alleged he was helping migrant caravans headed to the U.S. The new wave began as nationwide demonstrations emerged over George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police. Some insist Soros financed the protests, while others say he colluded with police to fake Floyd’s death last month. But all available evidence suggests the protests are what they seem: gatherings of thousands of Americans upset about police brutality and racial injustice. “I think partly it’s an attempt to distract from the real matters at hand — the pandemic, the protests or the Black Lives Matter movement,” Laura Silber, chief communications officer for Soros’ philanthropic Open Society Foundations, said of the theories. “It’s pretty demeaning to the people out there protesting when someone says they’re all paid. It’s insulting.” A look at some of the claims: — Soros pays protesters. No evidence has been presented to suggest demonstrators were paid by Soros or his organizations. It’s a new take on an old hoax: past versions claimed Soros paid for a long list of other events, including the 2017 Women’s March held just after President Donald Trump’s inauguration. — Soros pays to transport protesters. Last week, a photo claiming to show two buses emblazoned with the words “Soros Riot Dance Squad” got widespread attention. The photo was cited as proof of Soros’ involvement in the protests, but it was bogus. The original photo showed two unmarked buses; someone later doctored it to add the language supposedly implicating Soros. — Soros organizes stashing piles of bricks near protests. Several false claims involving stockpiles of bricks have been debunked, and no evidence has turned up showing they were purposefully placed. Experts who study conspiracy theories say the new claims about Soros are a way to delegitimize the protests and the actual

Berland: “Send Me $20,000 Within An Hour And You’ll Be Richer Than Leviev” [LISTEN TO IT]

Eliezer Berland, who was arrested last week on charges of exploitation, money laundering and tax evasion, is heard telling his assistant, who was also arrested, to ask for $20,000 from someone who requested a bracha from him for wealth, on a new recording revealed on Thursday on Chareidim10. “Yechezkel Shraga ben Chaya wants great wealth,” the assistant is heard saying. “Yechezkel Shraga ben Chaya should donate $20,000,” Berland responds. “You’ll be zohech to enormous wealth. You’ll be zocheh to be wealthier than Rothschild, than Lev Leviev, than Gutnick. You’ll be zocheh to wealth that was never seen in the world. Hashem will bring down all the wealth through you. You’ll be the channel of abundance to the whole world like Yosef Hatzadik.” “Transfer me $20,000 within an hour – Hashem is with you.” Giant Billboard Calling To “Save Israel’s Democracy” Greets Tel-Aviv

A giant billboard calling to “Save Israel’s Democracy” by instituting judicial reforms was put up on Thursday in the heart of Tel-Aviv on the corner of Rothschild Boulevard and Allenby Street. The 2,000-square-foot billboard was put up by the Zionist organization Im Tirtzu as part of its public campaign calling to reform the “unchecked and overreaching” judicial system in Israel. The billboard, using the hashtag #InquiryCommitteeNow, cites a new poll conducted by the Midgam polling agency that revealed how 56% of Israelis are in favor of establishing an independent inquiry committee to investigate the reported abuses of the Netanyahu investigations, including illegal leaks and witness coercion. The poll also revealed that the majority of Israelis believed that the judiciary operated too freely, with 68% of the respondents being in favor of establishing an independent audit mechanism for the judiciary. The poll also showed that nearly 50% of Israelis experienced a decline in trust in the justice system following the investigations of Prime Minister Netanyahu. According to Im Tirtzu, the recent controversy surrounding the Netanyahu investigations is merely a heightened manifestation of the dangers posed by Israel’s unchecked judicial and investigatory branches. The group is therefore calling for major judicial reforms, including establishing an independent audit mechanism for the State Attorney Office, changing the judge selection method, legislating a Basic Law enshrining the separation of power between the branches, and establishing an inquiry committee into the mishandling of the Netanyahu investigations. The billboard also quotes senior members of the justice system and public figures who have criticized the judiciary. These include former ombudsman for the State the State Attorney’s Office Hila Gerstel, who stated that “Shai Nitzan is not fit to be the State Prosecutor,” and former Supreme Court Justice Tzvi Tal, who when asked if he trusts the justice system and the Attorney General, responded “I have question marks.” Im Tirtzu CEO Matan Peleg said that the state of the justice system in Israel is unparalleled in the Western world. “Israel is under the thumb of a judicial oligarchy, which stands in contravention to the basic values of democracy,” said Peleg. “All of the important decisions over the past 20 years were not decided upon by elected officials, rather by a group of judges and legal advisers whose worldview represents a small minority of the public.” “It is only due to this phenomenon,” continued Peleg, “that there have been 19 police investigations against Prime Minister Netanyahu to date.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem/Photo credit: Im Tirtzu)

The Other Side Of The Cork: Netofa – The Essence Of The Lower Galilee Terroir

By Yael E. Geller, MPH I always wanted to write an article on the history of the kosher wine evolution. It is fascinating that here we are in 5779/2019 and we have access to multitudes of kosher wines from the most famous wine regions in the world. We live in a time where Israeli wine has made tremendous strides and arguably dominates the kosher market. It seems as though every single week we hear of new and exciting wineries popping up all around Israel; from the small-batch, garage wineries to the large estate wineries, there is no shortage of variety. In order to develop one’s palate, it is critical to taste as much quality wine as possible, as this expands the mind and taste buds beyond previous experiences and broadens our preconceived notions about flavors. There is so much planning and coordination that goes into quality winemaking, and as I continue to taste and learn (a journey I have been on since my youth), I realize that many outstanding winemakers do not get enough recognition for their precision and, even more importantly, their experience. Pierre Miodownick is one of the pioneers of the kosher wine industry, having made his first kosher wine Château de Paraza in 1982. Many people may not know Miodownick’s name despite the fact that he was the first to make kosher runs of the most famous Bordeaux wines. In 1993, he made the first kosher Château Giscours but refused to take credit by signing the bottle as winemaker. This is the epitome of Pierre, an extremely humble, pious, introspective artist and master of a craft. Not many can boast they have accomplished as much as he has for the kosher market. Some of Pierre’s most important contributions to the kosher wine world post-1982 include: The first quality Bordeaux, 1986 Barons Edmond & Benjamin de Rothschild, Haut-Médoc, the 1987 Château Piada, Sauternes, the first ever kosher Sauternes, which is still alive and kicking, Château Giscours, Margaux, 1993 and Château La Gaffelière, 1er cru Classé B, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, 1993, the first ever kosher Bordeaux classified growths from Left and Right Bank, and finally Les Forges, Côte de Beaune, Meursault, 1987 the first-ever quality kosher white Burgundy. Talking with Pierre about his experiences over the last almost-four decades in the kosher wine industry is eye opening. I feel as though I myself have accompanied him to Château de La Tour Clos Vougeot in Burgundy and crushed grapes with my feet, or perhaps gone hang gliding over the vineyards of Sancerre in the Loire Valley with proprietor Alphonse Mellot. These are experiences that wine aficionados and winemakers around the world would give anything to have experienced! Miodownick was born in the Languedoc, an area in France where life was all about grapes and wine. Living in a place where 100 percent of the industry related to wine production, Miodownick was naturally attracted to the wine world (he jokes that he was born in a fermentation tank). Languedoc is surrounded by Carignan vines, a grape variety which has recently gained lots of traction in Israel. Despite Carignan’s popularity, Miodownick prefers to work with other Mediterranean grape varieties that complement the terroir of the area below Mount Tabor in the Lower Galilee, on which the vineyards for Netofa winery were planted
