VIDEO: Jews Split on Who To Support for Attorney General in Tomorrow’s Election

Jewish leaders are split on which of the five candidates for Attorney General to vote for in Tuesday’s primary election. This past week in Boro Park signs went up proclaiming that Sean Coffey was the best candidate for Attorney General because he will “fight discrimination against Orthodox Jews.” Additionally, Mr. Coffey’s supporters sent out an expensive mailing touting their support for him as the best candidate in the race. These supporters include former New York City Council candidates Nachman Caller and Isaac Abraham as well as upstate (Rabbi Zalman Leib Teitelbaum) Satmar chasidic leader Cheskel Brach, Bobov 45 chasidic leader Ben Barber and Moshe Greenfeld, Lipa Deutsch and Tzvi Gluck. Insiders say that Cheskel Brach is financing the Orthodox Jewish campaign to support Sean Coffey to the tune of $25,000.

But Mr. Brach isn’t the only one spending money to support a candidate. Senator Eric Schneiderman, most famous in Jewish circles for promising Al Sharpton office space were he to win the race for Attorney General, has deep support from leaders of Agudath Israel of America as well as Bobov 48 and (Rabbi Aron Teitelbaum) Satmar chasidic leaders. Those supporters include: Elly Kleinman (Agudath Israel), Gedalia Weinberger (Agudath Israel), Leon Goldenberg (Agudath Israel), Chaskel Bennet (Agudath Israel), Shiya Ostreicher (Agudath Israel), Rafi Trietel (Agudath Israel), Yitzchok Fleischer (Bobov 48), Heshy Dembtizer (Bobov 48) and Ari Felberman (Kiryas Joel Rabbi Aron Teitlebaum Satmar Political Advisor). Supporters of Schneiderman have been running ads in Jewish papers this weekend claiming that he would “create a Religious Rights Unit” in his Attorney Generals office. It’s not clear from the ads is if the “Religious Rights Unit” would be part of Al Sharpton’s office or a separate office.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice has the support of Assemblyman Dov Hikind, who issued a press advisory last week announcing his support, and the (Rabbi Zalman Leib Teitelbaum) Satmar chasidic leadership in Williamsburg led by Rabbi David Niederman of the UJO. Jewish Assemblyman Richard Brodsky was endorsed by powerful Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. Despite Brodsky’s recent much-publicized withdrawal of his bill that supports ‘presumed consent of organ donations’ at the request of Agudath Israel and Assemblyman Hikind it appears that neither is supporting him. That leaves one final candidate, Eric Dinallo, who has scored no significant support from Jewish community.

The heated race for Attorney General appears to be a two-way race between Schniederman and Rice with Coffey running a distant third according to recent polls. Schniederman has the support of much of the liberal, union and pro-toeiva marriage establishment including the New York Times, and Al Sharpton. Rice has the support of the more conservative elected officials including the democratic leaders of Queens, Brooklyn, Nassau and Suffolk as well as considerable support among those who are “tough on crime” including the Nassau County Patrolman’s Benevolent Association.

As a service to YWN readers we are posting the last ads from Senator Eric Schneiderman and District Attorney Kathleen Rice below. This primary election for Attorney General is tomorrow, Tuesday, September 14th, 2010. Polls open across New York State from 9am – 6pm. Regardless of who you support, please remember it is important to go out and vote!

  1. after reading this fine article from yeshiva world , i have come to the conclusion , that when it comes to money everything is kosher . the heter is as follows what do i have to do with Al Sharpton .

  2. It is very hard to get excited about voting given the choices we have who are supported by our so called “Askanim”.I live in kevin Parker’s ditrict and am disgusted that the askanim are supporting him.Besides for his well publicized thuggish behavior , he made it very clear a few months ago that he was going to vote to legalise toeva marriage. It is a tremendous chilul hashem that the orthodox community will now vote for him. Then in a few months , the same askanim will send out emails and advertisements asking us to call elected officials in opposition to toeva marriage.I for one am disgusted by this and will not vote tomorrow .

  3. It is disgusting to see our leaders backing Toeiva – Schneiderman’s central theme is Social Justice. When the Senate was to vote on Toeiva, the ‘leaders’ went into frenzy, yet at the elections they hand them the endorsement. It is a shame!

Thanks to Moshe Dovid Niederman for standing up for our views and endorsing the most conservative candidate in the race. Hikind also embarrassed our community when he finally got something right and then switched his endorsement to Schneiderman. It is time he stops looking at the polls before endorsing. When Rice was leading – it was Rice, Schneiderman leading – Schneiderman. We had enough of that game called politics, Dov!

  4. SCHNEIDERMAN IS A MUSHCHAS AND A MENUVAL ! HE IS FOR ABORTION, TOEIVA AND EVERYTHING THE LEFT WINGERS WANT!
DON’T LOOK AT THE YIDDEN ENDORSING HIM. LOOK AT THE GOYIM THAT ARE ENDORSING HIM. THE BIGGEST MENUVALIM IN THE WORLD, QUINN, SHARPTON, NOW, ALL THE TOEIVAH ORGANIZATIONS.

SHAME ON ANY SHOMER TORAH U’MITZVOS THAT VOTES FOR HIM!
ITS BEFORE YOM KIPPUR AND THE BIG BALLOT COUNTER IS WATCHING YOU!!!

  5. You should not vote for any of these guys. They are all for gay rights and same gender “marriage” (sic).
In the general election vote for the republican or conservative guy.
Let’s vote out Wiener & Schumer, too.
    Hakol B’yad Hashem, though.

  6. The fact that the Agudah supports Eric Schneiderman proves that they care about only one thing – $$$ Money. The same candidate who is exclusively supported by all of the Toeivah groups and pledged to support and pass Toeivah Marriage is the candidate that our “Askanim” in Agudah are supporting ! Give me a break !

  7. #3,

NY also had a Jewish US Senator.

I don’t think it is that Jews left the Republicans as the Republicans left Jews. Neither Lefkowitz nor Javits would likely win a Republican primary today even in New York.

  8. I WANT TO VOMIT NOW AFTER READING ALL THIS GARBAGE. NEVER VOTE FOR A LIBERAL. ALWAYS VOTE CONSERVATIVE BECAUSE THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY AND EVEN MOST REPUBLICANS STAND FOR THINGS THAT WE IN THE JEWISH COMMUNITY STAND FOR.
