MK (Balad – National Democratic Assembly) Said Naffaa is opposed to permitting the voluntary lifting of his parliamentary immunity, a move that will result in charges against him for allegedly contacting an enemy agent and visiting a hostile nation. As such, the Knesset committee will have to meet and a vote will be taken if his immunity will be stripped against his will, permitting an indictment, or if he will retain his immunity and escape prosecution.
Naffaa visited Syria in 2007, where he conducted meetings, insisting his actions were within the parameters of his position as a member of Knesset, and not in any way a hostile act. During his visit to Syria, he is alleged to have met with senior commanders of the Islamic Jihad.
He explains that he opted to oppose lifting his immunity since he is a representative of the Israel’s Druse community and permitting prosecution would compromise his position on behalf of his supporters.
