R’ Shmuel Ben-Atar of the now-defunct Kol HaEmet radio station was released from prison today, Wednesday, after serving six months of a nine-month sentence. One-third of his term was removed for good behavior.
As was reported by YWN, Atar entered prison after Chanukah after being convicted of operating a pirate radio station.
R’ Atar on Tuesday met R’ Shlomo Benizri who entered Massiyahu Prison, beginning a 4.5 year sentence.

In most Middle Eastern countries owning an illegal station that broadcasts anti-government propaganda gets you executed or “disappeared”.
One of the most vivid contrasts between American and Israeli civil rights traditions is that in America an “underground” radio is a style (format, genre) of content, whereas in Eretz Yisrael it refers to the fact the station is banned on the basis of content.
