At approximately 11:30PM on Wednesday night, the Town of Ramapo Police received a report of a possible gunshot victim on Rita Ave, in the Village of Kaser in the Town of Ramapo. The first officers on the scene ascertained that a pedestrian was actually struck by multiple paint balls while standing by their vehicle. The victim stated that he and a friend were talking and leaning against the friends vehicle when a vehicle traveling south on Rita Ave bearing North Carolina registration pulled up to them. Both the victim and his friend stated they observed a male shoot a black rifle at them from the passenger side window of the car about 5 or 6 times. The victim was struck at least 2 times in the abdomen. The friend/witness vehicle was struck 3 or 4 times. The victim and the witness both stated that they heard someone yell “expletive Jews” as they drove past them.
The victim and his friend who are members of the Rockland Chaveirim Community Patrol broadcast their situation over their portable radios. Members of Chaveirim who were in the area patrolling arrived on the scene and followed the suspect vehicle and cornered it and three suspects on Frances Place in Monsey. Ramapo Police officers arrived and placed three persons under arrest. Recovered from the vehicle was a CO2 powered paint ball weapon.
The victim suffered minor injury to his abdominal area and was taken to Nyack Hospital for treatment. Ramapo Police Detectives were called in to assist with the investigation.
The following suspects were placed under arrest:
1- Shashi A. Ramsaroop, male, DOB: 07-31-90 of 31 Cottage La., Clarkstown, NY
2- Lindsey C. Peaks, female, DOB: 01-21-93 of 55 Ewing Ave. Apt. B16, Spring Valley, NY
3- Demetrius Latrell Torain, male, DOB: 03-09-94 of 38B Rose Ave, Spring Valley, NY
All three suspects were charged with the following crimes:
1- Assault 2nd degree as a hate crime, a D Felony
Causing an injury with a dangerous instrument.
2- Aggravated Harassment 2nd degree an A Misdemeanor
Harass, annoy, or alarm another because of the others race, religion, etc.
3- Criminal Possession of a weapon 4th degree an A misdemeanor
Possess a dangerous or deadly instrument (paintball gun)
4- Criminal Tampering 3rd degree a B Misdemeanor
Tampers with property of another causing substantial inconvenience (paint on the vehicle)
All three suspects are being held at the Town of Ramapo Police Department detention area awaiting arraignment. They will be arraigned Thursday morning.
