A horrific crash has left one man dead, and another in critical condition, Monday afternoon.
The accident happened around 1:00PM, on Route 42 in front of Har Nof Bungalow Colony. It appears the tractor trailer crossed the road into oncoming traffic, hitting a garbage truck head-on.
Monticello Fire Department, Mobilemdics, Catskills Hatzolah, Sullivan County Sheriff Department, NY State Police, Fallsburg Police, and other emergency personnel were on the scene working to extricate the drive of the garbage truck, who was heavily entrapped in the vehicle.
It took rescuers around an hour to extricate the driver, who was then driven a quarter-mile away to Kiamisha lanes, where a Medevac had landed to transport the victim.
Summer residents in Har Nof told YWN Catskills that the crash sounded like a bomb had exploded. One driver told YWN Catskills that it appeared that the driver was killed on impact.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash, and Route 42 remains shut in both direction between Fraser Road and the Concord Road.
Please use an alternate route.
