A meeting took place in Bnei Brak on Sunday, 2 Rosh Chodesh Tammuz 5773 that surprised many. Tzfas Chief Sephardi Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu met with HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita. Rav Eliyahu is viewed by many a viable candidate from the dati leumi community to serve as the next Sephardi Chief Rabbi of Israel. The rav is also a son of HaGaon HaRav Mordechai Eliyahu ZT”L.
Rav Eliyahu was accompanied by Rehovot Chief Rabbi HaGaon HaRav Simcha HaKohen Kook and HaGaon HaRav Avraham Sherman, who serves as a dayan on the Chief Rabbinate Supreme Court. They reportedly discussed the tens of thousands of non-Jews who will undergo giyur in the coming year as well as Shmitah and difficulties resulting from the Chief Rabbinate’s batei din being bound by state law.
The visiting rabbonim expressed their grave concerns over the issues at hand, emphasizing the need for a strong rabbinate that will safeguard Halacha as it should be.
Kikar Shabbat reports that Rav Kanievsky explained regarding a statement of support for Rav Eliyahu, he referred them to HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman Shlita. Rav Kanievsky indicated whatever the Gadol Hador decides will enjoy his support as well.

Rav Eliyahu deserves kvod for joining Rav Lior of Hevron and one other rabbi, still anonymous, in a beit din to convert the woman who was harassed by Tropper. These rabbis were like Pinchas, acting when action was needed.
Rav Eliyahu is a man who keeps his finger for every wind
He also sat on some funny batei din
Rabbi eliyahu came to reb chaim during normal hours that reb chaim see visitors, he didn’t have a “meeting”
