Israel: Health Ministry Wants All Children Vaccinated

vaaHealth Ministry officials in Israel want all children to receive vaccinations and it is now in the process of enforcing a 2009 law that will empower the ministry to take punitive action against parents not complying with this directive. The ministry wants the authority to remove a portion of child allowance payments from families that do not vaccinate children.

The ministry plans to send warning letters to homes in which the children have not been vaccinated, explaining that if this is not done by October 2013, the children’s child allowance payments will be reduced by a maximum of 100 NIS per family with two children/ 200 NIS per family with three children/ and 300 NIS for families with four of more children. The ministry is also weighing a policy of making financial aid for daycare contingent on vaccinations.

A family with two children receives 438 NIS monthly. If there are three children with one above 10-years-old the monthly amount is 701 NIS and if there are four children with two over 10-years-old, the amount is 964 NIS monthly. The ministry is being accused of targeting the Arab and chareidi sectors, with the largest families, but ministry officials insist this is not so, despite the fact that these two population groups have the largest number of children without vaccinations.

The Adullah rights organization and the Child Welfare Council have turned to the Supreme Court in 2011 seeking to block the law, but the court has not yet issued a ruling in the case. Petitioners in the case include Bedouin women from the south, who explain that while they are not opposed to vaccinations in principle, they do not have well baby centers in their area and therefore, their children are not vaccinated.

  1. It is extremely important that they enforce this law as it can be very dangerous to have your kids around other kids who have not been vaccinated.
and the ones who are arguing that they don’t want to give vaccinations because of the dangers know very well they are relying on all of us to vaccinate so their kids can be safe.

  2. Sorry, manofthetimes, but you haven’t done your homework. Herd immunity doesn’t help for things like pertussis (the most complained about VPD) and mumps outbreaks occur among vaxed kids too. Those who don’t vaccinate are often doing so because they have reasonable doubt about the safety and efficacy of the vaccinations. Maybe look into it yourself and see what you yourself think based on the facts.
