The plans for a Wal-Mart in Monsey have been withdrawn by the prospective developer, the Journal News reports. The development company reportedly faced concerns of the town and the public over the ability of existing roads and sewer lines to handle the demands of the 215,000-square-foot big-box store.
Jerrold Bermingham, executive vice president of the company, said on Thursday in a letter to the town: “the concerns of the township cannot be met and the project will not be approved.”
He said in an interview yesterday that “the traffic generated by the retail store would have gone on what is already a busy road, and there were also concerns about sewer capacity. I think those (issues) were really it.”
Bermingham could not say whether Wal-Mart would seek another location in the town or elsewhere in the county.
There was much opposition in Monsey to opening the Wal-Mart, and may protests were held.

Oy!
This project had the potential to be a great asset to klal yisroel.
Great job by the community! When we stand up together, the people in charge listen. Walmart is great, but their humongous new stores draw ‘undesirables’ of all types.
Look what happened when the huge new Walmart opened in North Miami Beach, FL. Crime has skyrocketed, traffic on local streets is worse, and the community’s pleas to the police and to Walmart have essentially fallen of deaf ears. So great job all around.
There are enough BIG stores that we do not need more. Let the little guys get their share, too. Monsey needs Jewish business, not foreign junk stores.

That’s good. With about 80 new developments going up around rt. 306 there was no way sewer capacity would handle walmart.
‘also concerns about sewer capacity’.is he talking about the junk they sell? just a
