Women of the Wall Call to Meet with Kosel Rav for the New Year

The Women of the Wall (WoW) organization sent a letter to the Rabbi of the Kosel and Holy Sites, Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz. The organization writes “With the New Year and the appointment of the new director-general or the organization, we wish to meet with you”. WoW officials tell the media the letter was sent over a week ago, but it has still not received a response. Yochi Rappaport, the organization’s new director, wishes to begin the New Year with a meeting with Rabbi Rabinowitz, who is in charge of the Kosel and the nation’s other holy sites. “We expect that just as the rav found the time to meet with Madonna and Melania Trump, he will succeed in finding time in his busy schedule to meet with us too” the women write, adding, “we wish to daven at the Kosel with emunah and true kavona. It is inconceivable that an elected public official, who salary is paid by the state, will refuse to meet with us”. The add that “we too strive for respectable tefilla at the Kosel”, quoting ׳לב טהור ברא לי אלוה..ורוח נכון חדש בקרבי The letter is concluded with New Year salutations. WoW is planning a major Kosel tefilla event on October 30, 2019, corresponding to Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan 5780, with the participation of “Jewish leaders” from around the world. Chareidi Assaulted While Walking To Kosel – Police Arrest Palestinian Suspect

Police on Monday announced the arrest of a suspect in an assault which took place in the area of the Dung Gate entrance to Jerusalem’s Old City. Police were called to the area on Sunday, with a chareidi man reporting he was attacked while heading to the Kosel, resulting in damage to his eyeglasses. When police arrived on the scene, they took a statement from the victim and this led to the apprehension of a 16-year-old Arab male. He was later arrested in his home in the eastern capital. He was taken into custody and is scheduled for arraignment in the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court. *****SIGN UP NOW —- GET YOUR NEWS IN RECORD TIME***** Make sure you are one of the more than 22,000 that signed up to YWN WhatsApp Status to receive news in live time. WATCH: Anti-Chareidi Tiveria Mayor Ron Kobi Visits Kosel, Protected by “Berditichever Rebbe” From Protestors

Anti-Chareidi Tiveria mayor Ron Kobi announced on Sunday that he would visit Mea Shearim and Beit Shemesh as part of his provocative election campaign for his anti-religious party, the Secular Right. Last week, Kobi tried to visit Bnei Brak but was forced to leave with the accompaniment of police after a crowd of Bnei Brak residents gathered to protest his presence in the city. Kobi didn’t visit Mea Shearim but he did visit Yerushalayim on Tuesday, according to a B’Chadrei Chareidim report on Wednesday. He toured the Machane Yehuda shuk, confronting Chareidi shoppers as he walked. Later, he came to the Kosel square, filming himself on Facebook Live as a few yeshivah bochurim joked around with him, asking him why he wasn’t wearing a kippah on a visit to the Kosel. Another group of yeshivah bochurim then approached and protested his presence by serenading him with songs about Shabbos. They also berated him to take off his kippah, which had meanwhile appeared on his head, saying that he should be ashamed to wear a kippah in light of his actions against Shabbos. As the bochurim continued to chide him, the “Admor of Berdichev,” R’ Aharon Baumel, appeared and warmly hugged Kobi. He then accompanied him to the Kosel itself as the yeshivah bochurim chastised him for associating with him. “Hakadosh Boruch Hu loves him,” R’ Baumel retorted. The shouts of the yeshiva bochurim continued as Kobi and R’ Baumel reached the Kosel and R’ Baumel began reciting Tehillim with him. “Don’t touch the Kosel,” they yelled at Kobi. “It’s forbidden to humiliate him,” R’ Baumel said. “Hashem loves all the Jews. Ron Kobi is a tzaddik.” Later, he told the bochurim, “Anyone who called him a rasha is obligated to ask forgiveness from him. There’s no re’shaim in Am Yisrael.” “He’s a rasha. It’s forbidden to flatter re’shaim,” a protestor responded. Eventually, the protestors grew louder and more unruly and Kobi was forced to leave the area with the help of the police. *****SIGN UP NOW —- GET YOUR NEWS IN RECORD TIME***** Make sure you are one of the more than 22,000 that signed up to YWN WhatsApp Status to receive news in live time. Preparing the Kosel Stones for Rosh Hashanah [PHOTOS]

As Rosh Hashanah approaches, work has begun at the Kosel, which begins with inspecting the integrity of the stones. During the inspection of each stone, dirt, bird droppings and other unwanted findings are removed, and any stone deemed unsafe is addressed to avoid a catastrophe chas v’sholom. At times, there is a need to repair between stones to ensure the future integrity of the Kosel. The inspection includes the Robinson’s Arch area, and it is reported no issues have been found to date. In the process of removing the growth between stones, and bird dropping, the mitzva of שילוח הקן was fulfilled as a bird’s nest was found between two stones. Interestingly, this occurred with this week’s parsha being Ki Seitzei. The Kosel Heritage Foundation continues its ongoing efforts to protect and maintain the integrity of the Kosel and surrounding plaza, at times working with the Israel Antiquities Authority. Tens of thousands of mispallalim are expected for slichos, which are already ongoing. The main Slichos will be on October 7, 2019 at 12:00AM in the presence of the Chief Rabbis of Israel, Rishon L’Tzion HaGaon HaRav Yitzchak Yosef and HaRav Dovid Lau, as well as the Rav of the Kosel & Holy Sites, Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz. WATCH THIS: Moving Scene At Kosel As Holocaust Survivor Tells His Story To American Yeshivah Bochurim

In a moving scene by the Kosel last week, an English-speaking Holocaust survivor told his story, surrounded by a group of American yeshiva bochurim from Camp Yaaleh Yerushalayim. Rabbi Shmuel Beller, 92, grew up in the Polish town of Oświęcim which later became the most notorious concentration camp associated with the Holocaust – Auschwitz. He was 12 when World War II began and spent five years being transported to ghettos and labor camps until he was sent to a concentration camp at the end of the war. He survived the camp, endured a death march, and was ultimately liberated but ironically almost didn’t survive eating solid food after being liberated. He became critically ill and was hospitalized for three months. “I went through the seven levels of Gehinnom” Rabbi Beller, said. “I was beaten, starved and put in the cattle trains, where they piled 100 people one on top of the other without light or sanitation.” Rabbi Beller said that after the war he was no longer religious but the Klausenberger Rebbe drew him close and influenced him to become religious again. Rabbi Beller gradually realized he was the only survivor of his family. He eventually discovered five surviving friends from his home town, adding that none of his friends were still religious and it was a miracle that he became religious. Rabbi Beller showed the bochurim the numbers on his arm, commenting that the numbers add up to 26, which is the gematria of Hashem’s name – the Shem Havayah (yud, hei, vav hei). The bochurim, visibly moved by Rabbi Beller’s story, requested brachos from him when he completed his story. An avreich who was present repeated the Satmar Rebbe’s words that if you find a person who has numbers on arm who’s still frum, you should ask for a bracha. *****GET YOUR NEWS IN RECORD TIME***** Make sure you are one of the more than 22,000 that signed up to YWN WhatsApp Status to receive news in live time. REVENGE ON HITLER: Woman Celebrates 104 Birthday, Hundreds Of Descendants Join Her At Kosel [INCREDIBLE PHOTOS]

The Ovitz family, a Mishpacha well-known among Vishnitzer Chassidim, gathered for a special occasion at the Kosel this week. The family matriarch, Mrs Shoshana Ovitz – an Auschwitz survivor –  is about to turn 104, and she had a request. She requested that all her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren etc, join her at the Kosel. Hundreds of her descendants gathered at the Kosel to recite Tehillim, and wish her well. Mrs Ovitz says she was Zoche to Arichas Yomim because of her Kibud Av, treating her parents with utmost respect, until they were killed in the gas chambers by the Nazis YM”S. Journalist Sivan Rahav tweeted the following: My grandmother, Shoshana Ovitz, survived Auschwitz. In front of her eyes Dr. Mengele YM”S took her mother. After the war, she met Grandpa Dov, who lost his wife and children in the camps. They got married and went to Haifa. She worked as a seamstress and helped him run the store. Now she has celebrated her 104th birthday and asked for a gift: that all the offspring come together to the Western Wall.” Sivan Rahav Meir (@SivanRahav) August 7, 2019 (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

שועלים הלכו בו: Dozens Of Foxes Seen Early Morning Near Kosel – Prophecy of Zechariah Alive and Well! [WATCH THE VIDEO]

As the video below shows, for the past three consecutive days, dozens of foxes have been observed entering and exiting the south western corner of the Kosel from dawn until sunrise. The scene immediately reminds one of the famous Gemara. It would seem that the appearance of these foxes in contemporary times is indicative of a similar consolation – a message sent to us from Hashem not to worry that the prophet of Zechariah will soon be fulfilled! The Talmud (Makos 24b) relates as follows: Once, Rabbi Gamliel, Rabbi Elazar Ben Azariah, Rabbi Yehoshua and Rabbi Akiva were arising to Yerushalayim. At the point where they had reached Har HaBayis they observed a fox that exited from the Kodshei Kadoshim. The others were crying, but Rabbi Akiva was laughing. They asked of him: Why are you laughing? He responded, why are you crying? They said to him, “A place upon which it is written – ‘and the stranger that approaches shall surely die’ and now that foxes have overridden it – we should not cry?” He said to them: That is precisely why I am laughing! The verse tied the prophecy of Zechariah with the prophecy of Uriah. Regarding Uriah it is written, “therefore because of you Zion shall be a field that is threshed.”  In the book of Zechariah it is written, “Older men and older women shall yet sit in the streets of Yerushalayim. Until the prophecy of Uriah would be fulfilled I was afraid that the prophecy of Zechariah would not necessarily be fulfilled. Now that the prophecy of Uriah has been fulfilled – it is known and established that the prophecy of Zechariah is being fulfilled! They responded to him, “Akiva – you have consoled us! Akiva – you have consoled us!” עד שלא נתקיימה נבואתו של אוריה – הייתי מתיירא שלא תתקיים נבואתו של זכריה; עכשיו, ‏שנתקיימה נבואתו של אוריה – בידוע שנבואתו של זכריה מתקיימת “בלשון הזה אמרו לו: “עקיבא ניחמתנו, עקיבא ניחמתנו (תלמוד בבלי, מסכת מכות, דף כד, עמוד ב) *****PLEASE NOTE: Make sure you are one of the more than 20,000 that signed up to YWN WhatsApp Status to receive news in live time. PHOTOS: Kosel Cable Car Plan Approved By National Infrastructure Committee

(PHOTOS IN EXTENDED ARTICLE) The cable car plan for the Kosel Plaza has been approved by the National Infrastructure Committee and submitted to the government for approval. On Monday, the National Infrastructure Committee approved the plans for the cable car to the Kosel, which will now be sent for government approval. The new cable car will provide a transportation solution for millions of visitors each year at the Kosel and Old City and will also serve as a unique tourist attraction. This is a joint project between the Jerusalem Municipality, the Jerusalem Development Authority, and the Ministries of Tourism, Transport, and Jerusalem Heritage and Affairs. Mayor of Jerusalem, Moshe Leon: “The cable car will enable millions of visitors to the Kosel to reach the city center and to experience the beauty of the capital of Israel from above. This unique and innovative and tourist attraction will dramatically increase accessibility to the city’s holy sites and provide a special experience for residents and visitors who come year-round to see Jerusalem holiness and history.” The cable car will be integrated into the mass transportation system, and will transport 3,000 passengers per hour in each direction at 21 KPH (13 MPH). This significant infrastructure project, unlike any other in the world, will raise the level of public transport service, making it more efficient and less crowded for one of the capital’s most trafficked areas, and make the Old City’s religious and historic sites accessible for people with disabilities. The cost and duration of the cable car construction are significantly less than other transportation options, and the construction period will not harm the daily life of the city. It is a green and environmentally friendly means of transportation, which will reduce noise, air pollution, traffic of public and private vehicles, and will preserve the special topography of the southern basin of the Old City. In addition, the cable car will allow more free passage of visitors, tourists, residents and merchants – including the 135,000 pedestrians that pass through in an average week. The project will have three stops: The First Station (the old train station), Guy Ben-Hinnom, and the Kedem Center. “The approval of the plan by the National Infrastructure Committee after the hearing of all the objections is a significant milestone in the promotion of this important project,” said the Jerusalem Development Authority. “The integration of forces and cooperation between the Municipality and the Ministry of Jerusalem Affairs and Heritage together with the Ministry of Tourism enabled an orderly planning process. As part of the strategic development of the city, the cable car will significantly reduce traffic congestion around the Old City and increase access to the area for residents, tourists and merchants alike.” The cable car project is expected to begin operations in 2021. The work on Wednesday morning was supervised by rav of the Kosel, Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz Shlita, and it is explained that wooden sticks and not metallic are used to avoid damaging the stones. In order to safeguard the privacy of the kvitlach, each area is closed off while they are working to avoid others coming and possibly reading the kvitlach. The operation is carried out with close supervision of the employees to ensure that discretion is maintained. PHOTOS: Bibi & Sara Netanyahu Daven at Kosel on Night Before Election Day; See What Their “Kvittel” Says

Benjamin and Sara Netanyahu went to the Kosel to Daven on Monday evening, the night before Election Day. Netanyahu placed a “Kvittel” in the Kosel, which read “For security, for Am Yisrael, for my family, and for love”. It’s a crowded field in Israel’s elections as over 40 parties will be slugging it out on Tuesday for seats in the country’s parliament. There is the right-wing flagship, centrist newcomers, ultra-Orthodox parties, Arab parties and fringe movements. But only a handful will win the necessary 3.25 percent of total votes cast to cross the electoral threshold needed to enter the Knesset. בעזרת השם ובעזרתכם – נעשה ונצליח! pic.twitter.com/spO8MDrUza — Benjamin Netanyahu – בנימין נתניהו (@netanyahu) April 8, 2019 Israeli democracy operates on a parliamentary system of proportional-representation in which the government needs a majority to rule. Since no party has ever earned more than 61 of the 120 seats in the Knesset, a coalition is required. Polls show Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s rightist Likud in fierce competition with the centrist Blue and White party. Both camps are trying to rile up their bases to become the largest party in parliament while also convincing the smaller parties to join them in a coalition after the results become known. Here’s a look at the major players: LONG-RULING LIKUD Israel’s conservative Likud party has dominated the political stage since 1977 with only a few exceptions, and it has controlled government for the past decade in large part thanks to Netanyahu’s personality cult and strong base. Netanyahu has brazenly allied himself with Israeli settlers and courted nationalist and ultra-Orthodox parties for his current coalition. In past elections, Likud has depended on a groundswell of populist support from Mizrahi, or Middle Eastern, Jews who harbor deep-seated resentment toward Israel’s European-descended founding elite and their social democratic brand of politics. This constituency appears poised to support Netanyahu again, despite the attorney general’s intention to indict him on three serious corruption charges. If Netanyahu wins another term, he will be on track to become the longest serving leader in Israeli history. He’ll also have to simultaneously lead the state while fighting criminal charges against him. ___ THE CENTRIST VANGUARD Ex-army chief Benny Gantz shook up the scene when he announced the formation of a new party earlier this year, and several weeks later, when he formed a partnership with centrist politician and former television host Yair Lapid, head of the centrist Yesh Atid. Their joint Blue and White list presents the first viable challenge to Netanyahu’s long rule. If elected, Gantz would lead the government for the first two and a half years with Lapid taking over for the rest of the term. The new coalition of centrists and former military officers has sought to mobilize a united front to oust the scandal-plagued Netanyahu, carrying the mantle of clean government, economic reform and respect for Israel’s state institutions. Gantz and his slate talk tough about standing up to Iran and striking Palestinian militants to appeal to hard-liners but have also hinted they won’t foreclose future peace negotiations. Although Blue and White has inched ahead of Likud in some polls, the party may find it more difficult to recruit suitable coalition partners. ___ THE NEW RIGHT A pair of nationalist ministers, Naftali Bennett and Ayelet Shaked, ditched their religious

PHOTOS: Kosel Preparations Underway Ahead Of Pesach

The Kotel Heritage Foundation is busy preparing for Pesach as is the case every year. One of the areas addressed is the removal of the kvitlach from the Kosel stones, which is done twice annually, before Pesach and before Rosh Hashanah. The removal of the kvitlach, which are placed in genizah, includes having the experts check the integrity of the Kosel stones and this includes the Wilson’s Arch area and other areas. During the examination, the walls of the Kosel are cleaned from residue of the birds and loose stone parts and loose plaster between the stones are removed/repaired. In an examination conducted this year ahead of Pesach, parts of stone and plaster were removed from the stones of the Kosel. The actual removal of the kvitlach will take place on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at 10:00 AM. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

WATCH: Gafne Tells Gantz: Stay Out Of The Egalitarian Kosel Issue!

MK Moshe Gafne, the chairman of the Degel Hatorah party as well as the Knesset Finance Committee, sends a video message to the head of the Blue and White party, Benny Gantz, advising him not to become involved in a matter he does not understand, the Kosel. Following is a synopsis of Gafne’s message: I never consulted with you regarding decisions you made and matters addressed as IDF chief of staff, nor on the matter of what and what not to say on the submarines case, so please, refrain from interfering and telling us regarding matters pertaining to the Kosel, its kedusha, it size, who many and may not enter. Please, I have a request, don’t speak about what you do not understand. The Kosel is not an apartment in Savion, in which we bring political parties, or portions of parties and make them one large party. You don’t get it. The Kosel is a place where ever it is. We have been davening towards the Kosel for 1000s of years. We continue and at the end, the Beis Hamikdash will be built, don’t get involved. Bringing in people, some suited some not – don’t ruin the Kosel, something you do not understand. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

More Than TEN THOUSAND Pack Kosel Plaza, Drowning Out 150 “Women Of The Wall” [VIDEO & PHOTOS]

More than ten thousand people packed the Kosel on Friday morning, the second day of Rosh Chodesh Adar II, to drown out women affiliated with the Reform Movement who had promised to come in large numbers R”L. Thousands upon thousands of Frum women and girls of all ages arrived at sunrise, easily filling up the entire Kosel, with many spilling out far into the Plaza. The mens section was packed as well. Approximately 150 people associated with the Women of the Wall (WoW) showed up wearing their Tefillin and Yarmulkas, and had a very hard time gathering together for their “Minyan”. WoW is calling the event “30 years of activism“, and were hopeful the turnout would be significant. In fact, WoW is having a weekend of events, including “Kabalat Shabbat sing-along” and havdalah. As YWN had reported, HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita called on all seminary students (girl’s high school) and women to daven at the Kosel on Rosh Chodesh in response to the women affiliated with the Reform Movement. Rabbi Of Kosel & Holy Sites Challenges Amnesty International’s Policy

Chief Rabbi of the Kosel & Holy Sites, Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, has sent a letter to Amnesty International in light of the organization’s policy, demanding tourist companies refrain from publicizing Jewish heritage sights in Israel. Following is the rav’s letter: Bs”d 8 Adar I, 5779 February 13, 2019 Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz Rabbi of the Western Wall and Holy Sites Open Letter to the Administration of Amnesty International A report that you published has been brought to my attention in which you demand of tourist companies to refrain from publicizing Jewish heritage sights in Israel. King David taught us, “The praises of a man are that he did not follow the counsel of the wicked, neither did he stand in the way of sinners nor sit in the company of scorners.” I have no idea under whose wicked counsel and guidance you have made your decision to publish this report, but I can say that more than anything else, it embarrasses you and your aims. I am sure that you are familiar with both Jewish history in Israel of the past 4,000 years, as well as the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the cynical use of religious values to justify blatantly trampling on the Jewish nation’s past and heritage. As you well know, the Government of Israel provides freedom of religion to Muslims, Christians, and any other religion, much more so than any other country in the Middle East. Ancient artifacts from the Mamluk, Umayyad, Crusader, early Christian, and Byzantine periods are sensitively and responsibly cared for by the Israel Antiquities Authority. The Muslim Waqf enjoys unprecedented status and sovereignty – including the freedom to cause unfathomable archeological damage during construction work on the Temple Mount. I would like to believe that despite your actions – your intentions are good, and that you actually do wish to put an end to this 115-year cycle of violence in the Land of Israel. But know this – without truth, there can be no peace. As the prophet Zechariah said, “Love peace and truth”. As long as you continue to treat the Jewish nation’s heritage in its land as a political issue, and its holy sites as conquered lands, not only will you not put out the flames, but you will be fanning them by your actions. Unfortunately, there are many who wish to turn the holy sites around the Land of Israel into places of dispute and strife. We, members of all religions, must teach the entire world to bow our heads with humility before He who created the world, and to understand that the land belongs to He who created it, and not to us. I wholeheartedly believe that heritage and sacred sites can and must be sources of inspiration, love, and peace between all religions and nations. I call upon you to immediately renounce this superfluous and harmful report, and join me and many others like me, Jews, Muslims, and Christians, who live side by side, respecting each other’s heritage, and wishing to live with true tolerance in his land that is holy to us all. PHOTOS: Austrian President Visits Kosel, Yad Vashem and Mattersdorf Yeshiva; Apologizes For Austria’s Role in Holocaust

Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen continued with his state visit to Israel on Monday, visiting Yad Vashem and Yeshivas Beis Shmuel in Yerushalayim. He visited the Kosel on Sunday night. Austrian Ambassador Martino Weiss accompanied the President to the Yeshiva in Kiryat Mattersdorf. Harav Yitzchak Ehrenfeld Shlita is the Rosh Yeshiva and Rav of the neighborhood, which is named after the centuries-old Austrian town of Mattersdorf, now known as Mattersburg. Harav Ehrenfeld gifted President Alexander Van der Bellen a silver Yad, pointer, for a sefer Torah. The president gave the Rosh Yeshivah a street sign with the name of his grandfather in Mattersdorf in Austria. The Austrian president was received at an official ceremony during which the anthems of both countries were played. The presidents then reviewed the IDF honor guard and made joint statements. They then held a meeting to discuss the strengthening relations between the two countries. “We are pleased to host you here in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, as a true friend of the state of Israel and of the Jewish people”, said Rivlin. “You have often told your story as a refugee child who too time to feel at home in his country- the same country you are now a president of. Our past is the basis of our values, our beliefs, the choices we make. Welcome to Israel, President @vanderbellen of #Austria ! 🇦🇹🇮🇱 pic.twitter.com/4ymE8gZo34 — Reuven Rivlin (@PresidentRuvi) February 4, 2019 “The Jewish nation as well have grown from the past and today its building its future here in the State of Israel, a Jewish and democratic state, democratic and Jewish. I believe that cooperation between Austria and Israel will do well for our economies and can also contribute to the world,” added Rivlin. “Israel is a strong and stable democracy, we will never compromise our values or the security of our citizens… We hope for a day when Israel will live in peace with all its neighbors. In the Middle East, just as it is in Europe, peace between nations must be based on confidence-building measures and long-term cooperation based on common interests.” .@yadvashem is a powerful place of commemoration and reflection. It is a warning to future generations, a reminder of the fragility of democracy and of the values we so often falsely take for granted. (1/3) pic.twitter.com/pvsdZAu7AZ — A.
