Judges in Spain Block Additional BDS Decisions

Two additional anti-Israel municipal decision in Spain were overturned by justices in the Spanish cities of Valencia and Barcelona, delivering a blow to the boycott, divestment and sanctions effort. According to a Yisrael Hayom report, the decision were passed by local governments in Xeraco, south of Valencia, and Olesa de Montserrat, near Barcelona in the Catalon region. “In May of last year, Xeraco passed a decision not to sign any diplomatic agreement or contract in the fields of trade, agriculture, education or culture, or any agreement to cooperate with Israeli public entities, companies, or organizations in the field of security” Yisrael Hayom reports. Yisrael Hayom quotes JTA quoting the pro-Israel Spanish organization ACOM in adding ten-justice panels overturned the municipal rulings. Spain’s municipalities have accepted the BDS movement and passed the highest number of resolutions among EU nations. The country’s judicial system however is working hard against BDS. Iran Turns US’ Stern Message to Iran on Threat Against Tel Aviv

As the new Trump administration sends a new message to Iran, one stating clearly the US will no longer tolerate missile testing, senior Iranian official Mojtaba Zonour announced if attacked, its target will be Tel Aviv. President Donald Trump has imposed sanctions on 25 companies that are connected to Tehran’s missile program in response to illegal missile testing. According to an i24 News report, Zonour, a senior National Security & Foreign Police Commission official, stated if America “makes a mistake”, Tehran will turn around and launch a missile at Tel Aviv, adding “it only takes seven minutes to hit Tel Aviv”. Not stopping there, the senior Iranian officials warned America’s base in Bahrain would be leveled as well if Tehran is attacked. UN Security Council 2331 prohibits Iran from conducting missile testing, which it has preferred to ignore to date. This led to the warning from the new US administration. This Is One for the Birds

[By: L. Halevi] The world we live in today is very different from the world of a decade ago. In fact, it is different today than a mere six months ago. The speed in which things change and evolve, the way in which industries are turned on their heads and the information highway is repaved, is breathtaking. A decade ago, if you said the word “Tweet” it would conjure up images of a bird making some noise. Nowadays, it’s still a bird that we think of, but it is specifically a well-known bluebird, also referred to as the Twitter icon. Nowadays, the noise that the bird makes with its tweets is not always soft and pleasant, rather it can be noisy, filled with deeper meaning and sometimes less than pleasant. Twitter has taken the world by storm, and is used – and often abused – to notify the world, in an instant, of things of great importance, earth-shattering news, presidential political updates and everything in between. Everyone and their brother has a Twitter account, AKA a Twitter handle, and uses that seat of prominence to attract followers and make their mark on the world. The Jewish world is no different. Many popular Twitter accounts have attracted thousands of followers who are eager to read, share and comment every tweet, for better or for worse. Some of the more popular accounts are @YWN, @YiddishNews and @JTAnews, just to name a few, and each one in their own way dominates the Orthodox Jewish world with their particular style of news, commentary and updates that are relevant to the Orthodox Jewish population. Most of the aforementioned accounts rely on advertising to sustain their existence, which can also lead to making the accounts, like their websites, a little cluttered and noisy. The exception is @YiddishNews, which offers the relevant news items without any ads or other annoyances; it’s straight up news, and their thirty three thousand or so followers seem to appreciate this method, as their growth is steadily rising in the Jewish world. Redefining breaking news, the feed offers more clarity with less ad clutter. Front page headlines are seamlessly listed, sometimes beating the press to it. People in general – and the Jewish population as well – have a “love-hate” relationship with Twitter. It can be annoying and intrusive, yet they keep coming back for more. Twitter feeds are checked multiple times per day, and it’s a habit that simply can’t be beat. It has become part and parcel of our very lives and there is nothing to really do about it. No longer are the News Papers the primary source for news. Twitter news accounts have solidly taken over. The only question is which accounts to follow and which accounts to go to first for breaking news and news with an angle that best suits your particular style or ideology. The little blue bird is out of its cage, and it’s here to stay. Get used to it, and as the saying goes, “If you can’t beat them, join them”. No matter if your personal handle is @UltraOrthodox, @Orthodox or @ModernOrthodox, there is a kosher bird out there, waiting for you.

CKD Avreichim Receive Highest Scores on Rabbanut Bechinos

Of the hundreds of kollelim that exist in Yerushalayim today, the Center for Kehilla Development (CKD) is truly unique. Founded in Elul 2014 by Rabbi Leib Kelemen, an internationally known chinuch expert, the objective of the kollel is to equip avreichim with the knowledge, skills and experience to become future community leaders.   The schedule is rigorous and the pace is intense. Over the course of five years, the avreichim will receive semicha from the Rabbanut of Israel in Niddah, Shabbos and Issur v’heter; be repeatedly tested on over nine hundred daf of gemara; learn several classic works of mussar and machshava- including Nefesh Hachaim and Daas Tevunos– b’iyun; and receive extensive training in sholom bayis and chinuch.   CKD avreichim can testify to the rewards of their efforts. In the most recent Rabbanut exam on hilchos niddah, members of the kollel received an average score of 95%. Israel’s Chief Rabbi Lau was so impressed with these results that he invited the avreichim to his office to personally congratulate them on their exceptional achievements. Rabbi Kelemen is delighted with the remarkable success of his avreichim, but is, nonetheless, not surprised: “Our avreichim are extraordinary men and are taught by outstanding talmidei chachamim who are also expert mechanchim. NYC: Parts Of Queens Still Buried Under Snow – Where Are The Plows?

Mayor De Blasio called out the New York Sanitation Department for not doing a good enough job cleaning up Queens but the head of the union says “don’t blame us.” Folks are still trying to dig out of the second largest snowstorm in New York City history. Many streets had not been plowed more than 24 hours after the snow stopped falling. Many streets were impassible. People were saying that Queens was the forgotten borough. The Twitter hashtag #plowqueens was trending in New York on Monday. Cars were encased in snow on two narrow streets that have not even caught a glimpse of a plow. Crews say they have been making progress across the borough, but for local residents, cleanup has still been way too slow. Sanitation crews were also busy rescuing their own equipment as they were clearing thousands of narrow side streets. The aftermath of the blizzard left ten plow trucks marooned in deep snow, and if the sanitation crews were having trouble, it’s a mess. The anger intensified throughout Queens as the cleanup began, and Mayor de Blasio admitted the Sanitation Department fell short, thanks to the sheer size and the overwhelming snowfall. In a phone interview on Fox 5 News on Monday morning, Harry Nespoli, the President of the Uniformed Sanitationmen’s Association, said the side streets are under contracts by the city to private plow companies who are not doing the job. He says the public workers are not supposed to touch those streets. Nespoli says he has stated numerous times that those contracts are a waste of money and he’s fighting to get that program ended when the contracts expire at the end of 2016. Indictment Filed Against the Brain Behind the Terror Attack That Claimed the Lives of Nechemia Lavie And Aharon Benita

An indictment was handed down on Thursday, 23 Cheshvan in the Jerusalem District Court against Abed al-Aziz Meeri and his assistant in connection with the murders of Nechemia Lavie HY”D and Aharon Benita HY”D. The two were murdered in an attack near the Shar Shechem entrance to Jerusalem’s Old City. Meeri is believed to have been the mastermind behind the attack. The indictment contains two counts of preempted and attempted murder as well as funding terrorist acts. Last month, Mohammed Halabi turned to Meeri, asking assistance getting into Green Line Israel to visit al-Aqsa Mosque. The two went together from Abu Dis to Har Habayis. They were denied entry because they would not show their ID cards, which are from the PA (Palestinian Authority). It appears in their anger they decided to perpetrate an attack because they were refused entry to Har Habayis. Meeri then bought a knife near Shar Shechem and left Halabi to move ahead with the attack. When Meeri heard of the attack in the media, he recited a prayer of thanks. The following day he decided he too would carry out an attack, but his arrest three days later prevented this. (YWN – Israel Desk, Jerusalem)

VIDEO: President Rivlin Meets with Arab and Jewish residents of Sur Baher and Ramat Rachel

President Reuven Rivlin on Wednesday morning 1 Rosh Chodesh Tammuz, met with residents of Kibbutz Ramat Rachel and the nearby Arab neighborhood of Sur Baher. The meeting coincided with the launch a new book by Eliezer Yaari, entitled “Beyond the Dark Mountains”, which follows the author on a journey through the neighborhoods around the area – close to his own home – and details his encounters with his neighbors and the local Jewish and Arab residents. The President began by extending his greetings to the Muslim residents of Sur Baher in honor of Ramadan which was to begin the following day. He noted that as a Jerusalemite, Sur Baher held for him fond memories of the Arab green grocer from the village, who would frequent his childhood neighborhood of Rechavia, and would speak in Yiddish with the Jewish residents, who in turn would respond in Arabic. Dr. Ramadan Dabesh, chairman of the Sur Behar residents committee, told the President that he was born close to Ramat Rachel, and that all of his life, he had been aware of the gaps between the two communities. He said, “The first banner I raised as chairman of the village was that of peace. If we are able to live in peace with ourselves and with our neighbors, we can face any challenge. The second banner was that of equality. The time has come for us to demand what we deserve, instead of complaining about what we don’t get. There is a tremendous gap between what we have and what our neighbors have – in terms of education and infrastructure – and for this we are striving.” The President listened to the Sur Baher residents’ words and said. “Jerusalem is one, but there is no disputing there is inequality in Jerusalem.” The President addressed the author, Eliezer Yaari, and said, “In your personal story, it was the need to undergo open-heart surgery which led you to embark upon an inspirational journey of enlightenment. Similarly, Jerusalem is in need of open-heart surgery, and to set out on a painful and complicated, but essential journey to mend the rifts and gaps between its Jewish and Arab residents. The narrowing of these gaps between the two parts of Jerusalem in education, infrastructure, learning of languages, and employment, is a crucial mission for sake of the future of the city, and of all of us.” The President spoke of the importance of the residents of the two communities meeting together. He said, “It is important that this meeting is taking place, as the book illustrates the extent to which discussion is essential to open the heart, and to set out on the path to partnership. As a Zionist, I understand that I will not be able to explain to an Arab resident of this land that the Jewish people needed to return to the land of Israel, because we have no other land. We have to reach an understanding that all of us are living here, and none of us are going anywhere.” The President stressed that he saw no conflict in Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. He said, “A Jewish and democratic state is not a democracy just for Jews, but a Jewish democratic state, democratic and Jewish in one utterance. We are not doomed,

Police Investigating Church Shooting as ‘Hate Crime’

A white man opened fire during a prayer meeting inside a historic black church in downtown Charleston on Wednesday night, killing nine people in an assault that authorities described as a hate crime. The shooter was still at large. The shooting took place at the Emanuel AME Church, Police Chief Greg Mullen said. He said there were survivors, but would not say how many, or how many were inside at the time of the shooting. He also would not confirm whether the pastor, state Sen. Clementa Pinckney, was one of the victims. Mullen described the suspect as a white male in his early 20s. He said he believed it was a hate crime, but would not elaborate. “The only reason that someone could walk into a church and shoot people praying is out of hate,” said Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley. “It is the most dastardly act that one could possibly imagine, and we will bring that person to justice. … This is one hateful person.” As police and the city’s mayor updated the news media, a group of pastors huddled together praying in a circle across the street. Police moved members of the news media back away from the site due to what they called an “imminent” threat. They did not release any details. The campaign of GOP presidential hopeful Jeb Bush sent out an email saying that due to the shooting, the candidate had canceled an event planned in the city Thursday. The Emmanuel AME church is a historic African-American church that traces its roots to 1816, when several churches split from Charleston’s Methodist Episcopal church. One of its founders, Denmark Vesey, tried to organize a slave revolt in 1822. He was caught, and white landowners had his church burned in revenge. Parishioners worshipped underground until after the Civil War. The shooting happened the day before the eighth anniversary of a fire at a furniture store that killed nine Charleston firefighters. Funeral For Driver Of SUV In MTA Train Collision To Be Held At Chabad Of Dobbs Ferry

Mourners of a woman who was driving the SUV that was hit by a suburban commuter train are making their final goodbyes. Ellen Brody’s service is scheduled for 10:00AM Friday at Chabad of the Rivertowns in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. The 49-year-old mother of three was killed along with five others on Tuesday. Investigators’ preliminary findings indicate the SUV was in the danger zone inside railroad crossing gates for about half a minute before the train crashed into it. Brody got ahead of the crossing gate in inching traffic, then got out of her car to examine it after the gate came down and hit the back of it, a witness has said. But then she got back in and advanced onto the track, the witness said. According to the JTA, Rabbi Benjy Silverman who is one of the Directors of the Chabad house told the JTA that Brody and her family “were very Jewishly proud, with strong connections to Israel,” “It was an important part of her life and her family’s life.” Brody’s family has been involved with the Chabad center since its inception 12 years ago, Silverman said. Brody’s three daughters, Danielle, Jules and Lexi, all went to the Chabad Hebrew school and had their bat mitzvahs there. Kosher Grocery Assault Confirms Worst Fears of French Jews

The following is via TIME: The worst fears of France’s already tense Jewish community came to be on Friday when an assailant believed to have killed a policewoman the day before took hostages at a Kosher supermarket in eastern Paris. The suspect was killed when police stormed the market and several hostages were reportedly freed, but the fate of others remains unclear. Prime Minister Manuel Valls told reporters earlier that the suspect, believed to be Amedy Coulibaly, 32, had ties to the gunmen in the terror strike on Charlie Hebdo on Wednesday, who were killed in a separate police operation on Thursday. The assault on the Kosher supermarket shook the Jewish community in France and abroad. As dual hostage situations unfolded, police ordered the closure of all shops in the tourist-filled Jewish neighborhood in central Paris, far from the supermarket under siege in the city’s east, according to the Associated Press. And ahead of the Sabbath Friday evening, the iconic Grand Synagogue of Paris was closed, USA Today reported. The Jewish community in France, numbering more than 400,000, had already been on guard after an uptick in anti-Semitic violence in recent years, including the shooting of four people at the Jewish Museum of Belgium in May 2014, allegedly by a French Muslim man. After the attack on Charlie Hebdo on Wednesday, Jewish institutions were on maximum alert, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported. Volunteers joined police deployed by the French authorities to secure schools and religious sites. “We are past red alert at this stage, it’s all hands on deck because, sadly, the question is not whether the French Jewish community will be targeted, but when,” Chlomik Zenouda, vice-president of the National Bureau for Vigilance against anti-Semitism, told JTA before the assault on the supermarket. When an attack materialized, on the Kosher supermarket in the Porte de Vincennes, condemnation of the assault and expressions of support flowed in from the Jewish community around the world. Israeli President Reuven Rivlin tweeted in solidarity: READ MORE AT TIME.COM

Yelp Accused of Extorting Restaurants for Good Reviews

First the chefs of a small Italian restaurant got mad at online review site Yelp. Instead of trying to get better reviews, they decided to take a different approach: get terrible ones. The campaign helped Botte Bistro get a rating of one out of five stars, as more than 1,000 reviewers left hundreds of tongue-in-cheek reviews panning the Richmond, California, eatery, said chef Michele Massimo, adding that it boosted business. It was the latest protest among businesses who for years have complained that Yelp was extorting them by raising or dropping ratings depending on whether they advertised with the Internet’s most popular review site. Yelp has persistently denied those claims on its website, in court and at every opportunity when the question is put publicly to the company. “It wouldn’t pass the straight face test,” Yelp spokesman Vince Sullitto said of the extortion claims. Sullitto said Yelp attracts millions of viewers and sells advertising to 80,000 businesses because of the site’s credibility with consumers. Sullitto said many of the company’s critics are businesses that have received bad reviews. Last month, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals tossed out a lawsuit filed by several businesses claiming Yelp extorted them by removing positive reviews after advertising sales pitches were turned down. The court is one rung below the U.S. Supreme Court and the ruling could have been a definitive one for Yelp. Instead, it served to fuel the company’s critics because the court said that, even if Yelp did manipulate reviews to penalize businesses, the practice would not constitute extortion. The court said it found no evidence of manipulation and that it was ruling narrowly only on the question of extortion. Nonetheless, the company’s critics said the ruling supported their claims. Even before the 9th Circuit ruling, Yelp was battling two lawsuits filed by company investors who make similar extortion claims. The suits, filed in San Francisco federal court over the summer, allege that the company’s stock traded at artificially inflated prices because the “company tried to sell services designed to suppress negative reviews or make them go away” and then lied about it. The company has yet to formally respond to the lawsuits in court, but says it will fight these legal actions as well. Last year, a lawyer serving as a small-claims judge in San Diego likened Yelp to a “modern-day version of the Mafia going to stores and saying, ‘You want to not be bothered? You want to not have incidents in your store? Pay us protection money.’” The judge, Peter Doft, made the comments when he ordered Yelp to pay San Diego lawyer Julian McMillan $2,700 over a contract dispute involving advertising on Yelp. The award was later overturned by a higher court, which ruled that McMillan’s dispute with Yelp should be decided by an arbitrator instead of a court. McMillan didn’t pursue his claim. But Yelp did file a lawsuit against McMillan, alleging he and his employees submitted fake Yelp reviews of his law practice. McMillan denies the charges and alleges that Yelp sued him because of his small-claims court victory. The allegations are so widespread and have persisted for so long that the company asks on its website: “Does Yelp extort small businesses?” The company answers no. Yelp has had a complicated relationship with merchants,

‘Dogs are Allowed in this Establishment, Jews are Not Under any Circumstances’

All over the world, displays of anti-Semitism and hatred against Jews continue to segregate them from the community, from pro-Palestinians in France attempting to attack suburban synagogues, to a swastika being spray painted on a Thornhill, Ontario bus stop. In Belgium, where just a few months ago in Brussels a gunman went on a shooting spree at a Jewish museum killing four, another illicit demonstration of hatred has taken place, as a café hung up a sign that read “No Jews Allowed.” JTA reports that a Belgian watchdog, the Belgian League Against Anti-Semitism, or LBCA, has filed a complaint to the mayor after discovering the sign at the Saint-Nicolas café, located in a suburb just east of Liege, and to bring those parties responsible to justice. The suspects reportedly hung a sign written in Turkish and French that reads “Dogs are allowed in this establishment but Jews are not under any circumstances.” The French text, in this scenario, replaces the words “Jews” with “Zionists,” yet another indication of the blurred line between anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism. After filing the complaint, the major sent police to investigate at the cafe, who have since removed the sign and confirmed the LBCA report. The window display also included a Palestinian flag, an Israeli flag crossed out with a red “X” sign, and a kaffieh, or Palestinian shawl, draped around it. The incident comes only a day after three European Foreign Affairs ministers condemned the wave of anti-Semitism that’s been taking place across Europe as Israel’s war against Hamas terrorists rages on. While in the West we’ve been affected mostly on social media (save for some unfortunate instances), for European Jews it’s been a truly frightening ordeal. (Source: ShalomLife.com)

Islamist Plot to Blow up Eiffel Tower, Louvre and Nuclear Power Plant Foiled, say French Police

France foiled an Islamist terrorist plot to target the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and even a nuclear power plant, it emerged on Wednesday, as the country unveiled new, tougher anti-terror rules. French police stumbled on the plans after decrypting coded messages between a 29-year-old Algerian butcher living in the Vaucluse, southern France, known only as Ali M, and one of the highest-ranking members in al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM. According to Le Parisien newspaper, in April last year, the married father of two who went by the pseudonym Abu Jaji was asked by his AQIM contact, whose web alias was Redouane18, to make “suggestions concerning how to conduct jihad in the place you are currently”. Ali M suggested targeting nuclear power plants, “planes at the moment of take-off”, and a string of French landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre museum in Paris. Failing that, he suggested launching terror attacks on “the modest and poor French population” in markets or nightclubs, as well as police patrols. In an apparent reference to the famed Avignon theatre festival, he also singled out “cultural events that take place in the south of France in which thousands of Christians gather for a month”. “The main walkways become black with people and a simple grenade can injure dozens of people, not to mention a booby trapped device,” he said. His contact then asked him to travel with a fellow would-be terrorist to Algeria to “benefit from a military training and training in combat techniques”. After that, he would return to France, stake out targets and “await your instructions”. “I am fully ready and prepared,” he replied. Although the plans were still at the discussion stage, French police arrested the Algerian in June last year, a month before he was due to fly to Tunisia and then onto Algeria for training. The man’s lawyer said he had been brainwashed. “The arrest was a relief for him,” Daphné Pugliesi told Le Parisien. The revelations came as Bernard Cazeneuve, France’s interior minister, unveiled tougher anti-terror rules, including proposals to ban a suspect from leaving the country if it is thought he intends to fight Jihad abroad, such as in Iraq or Syria. Last month French police arrested Mehdi Nemmouche, a French jihadist who fought in Syria, and allegedly killed four people at the Brussels Jewish Museum in May after travelling back to Europe. The new legislation, to be presented to parliament “in the coming days”, will also make it easier to target “lone wolves” and create new powers to force internet providers to block Islamist hate propaganda. It will also allow investigators to use pseudonyms to go undercover in pro-jihadist sites. Marc Trevidic, one of France’s highest-profile anti-terror judges, said the case of Ali M was far from being isolated. “There are doubtless others on our soil programmed to harm French interests,” he told Le Parisien. Some 800 French nationals or residents are thought to have left to fight in Syria since the start of the civil war. (Telegraph.co.uk)

Pro-ISIS Rally Calls for Massacre of Jews and ‘Down, Down USA!’

Video has emerged of a July 4 rally by a group of Muslims in the Hague in support of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria where slogans were chanted promoting the downfall of the U.S. and violence toward Jews. Holding black flags associated with ISIS and with some of their faces covered by black masks and keffiyehs, demonstrators chanted in unison, “Down, down USA!” “Down, down Israel!” and “Allahu akbar!” The Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported that demonstrators shouting “menacing slogans” gathered in Schilderswijk, one of the largest immigrant neighborhoods in the Netherlands that has been described in the local media as the Dutch “Shariah triangle.” The crowd is heard on the video shouting in Arabic, “Jews, remember Khaybar, the army of Muhammad is returning.” Khaybar refers to the battle in 629 in which Muslims massacred Jews and later expelled them from the Arabian peninsula town. The historical event is often invoked by anti-Israel protesters. JTA reported that the group was also protesting Dutch police efforts to locate Muslims who had traveled to or were planning to travel to Syria to join the jihadist group trying to establish a caliphate in the Middle East and beyond. Protesters were heard describing local police activity as “terror and intimidation.” European officials have voiced alarm at the large number of Muslim youths raised in the West who have disappeared to Syria where they gain terrorist training and pose a potential future threat to the European home front. This video of the rally was posted on YouTube: (Source: TheBlaze.com)

In Russia, Holocaust denial soon to be illegal

The JTA reports that the Duma, or lower house of the Russian Parliament, has passed a law that would punish historians who deny Nazi war crimes committed during WWII. The law is widely regarded in Russia as a response to what many Russians believe to be the “rehabilitation of Nazism,” or the resurgence of the Nazi political agenda in states bordering Russia. Many Russians believe, including President Vladimir Putin, that Ukraine’s new government is at least partially dominated by neo-Nazi fascist parties, a belief that has prompted Russia to take unusually aggressive diplomatic and military interventions in Ukraine including the recent unilateral annexation of the Ukrainian Crimean peninsula. “For us, the rehabilitation of Nazism will always be a crime against our country and our people. Rehabilitation of Nazism is not only a shot fired at the past and mocking millions of victims. It is also… instigation for new crimes against peace and security,” said head of the Lower House Committee for Security Irina Yarovaya, one of the main sponsors of the bill. The law still needs to be approved by the legislative upper house in order to take effect. (Aliza Levine – YWN)

Romanian President: Israel Must Be Recognized As A Jewish State

Echoing a now accepted demand by Canada and the U.S. administration, Romanian President Traian Basescu said Monday he supports in principle Israel’s demand for Palestinian recognition of Israel as the Jewish state. “If they [the Palestinians] want peace, they must follow the request of the Israeli people,” Mr. Basescu told JTA at his presidential palace last week before he embarked on a visit to Israel, that started Sunday. But Mr. Basescu urged compromise as the process unfolds. When asked whether Israel should condition progress in peace talks on Palestinian compliance, he said, “Well, all of us must be wise. Of course, compromises are needed because otherwise we won’t find the solution and here maybe [late Israeli prime minister Ariel] Sharon is an example.” Basescu compared the situation to Romania’s recognition of the Republic of Moldova as the homeland of the Moldavian people, despite the presence of a large contingent of Moldovans who consider themselves Romanians. “Even in Europe, we fully support the idea that each person must assume his national belonging,” he told JTA. “For example, in order to be more clear, we have the Republic of Moldova, which was part of Romania before World War II. But in Moldova, there are people who [consider] themselves as being Romanians as well as people who [consider] themselves as being Moldavian. We recognize the right of both to be what they want to be.” “The same situation [applies to] our relations with Israel and we’ll always support the idea that if the Israelis want to be declared as a Jewish state, they must be recognized [as such].” According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Romania is the only former Soviet country to have maintained diplomatic relations with Israel after 1967. Romania also recognized the 1988 first unilateral declaration of independence by the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Photo/Wikipedia (Jacob Kornbluh – YWN)

World Jewish Congress Condemns Beating Of Jewish Teacher In Ukraine

The World Jewish Congress today decried the beating of an Israeli-born Jewish teacher in the Ukrainian capital Kiev in what local Jewish leaders say was an anti-Semitic incident. World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer called the beating “a vicious act that must not go unpunished,” and said that WJC was closely monitoring the situation. Boris Fuchsmann and Josef Zissels, both vice-presidents of the World Jewish Congress, said the community believed the beating to be the result of anti-Semitic incitement and extremist activity seen in Kiev in recent days, including a torchlight march by supporters of the anti-Semitic party Svoboda on 1 January. A group of at least four thugs beat teacher Hillel Wertheimer on Saturday night after following him home from synagogue services. Zissels, the head of the VAAD of Ukraine, said that three of the four men then punched and kicked Wertheimer in the vestibule of his home. A neighbor had come down to investigate after hearing Wertheimer shout for help, Zissels told JTA, and the teacher had now recovered from the beating. “Nowadays, the beating of a defenseless Jewish school teacher is a culmination of anti-Semitism. The Ukrainian government must take tough measures to prevent such incidents in future. I also hope for that the representatives of Western states will react to this incident,” Boris Fuchsmann, president of the Jewish Confederation of Ukraine, declared in reaction to the attack. Communal officials met with state security services in order to seek more police protection for Jewish communal buildings. Swastikas have been daubed in Jewish areas recently. Another meeting was planned for Wednesday with the US ambassador in Kiev, Geoffrey R. Pyatt. Have you checked out YWN Radio yet? ClickHERE to listen! (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

Former Rep. Turner Moving Back To Rebuilt Breezy Point Home

After 14 months in exile, Former Republican Congressman Bob Turner in returning home, moving back into his rebuilt Breezy point home on Friday. “There’s no place like home,” he said, smiling to the camera, as he let in a NY1 crew during last preparations before moving in. Mr. Turner was one of more than 80 Breezy Point residents who lost their homes during a massive fire sparked by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Turner and his wife Peggy did not evacuate, until the fire was right on their tails. “While we were here upstairs on the second floor reading, we noticed a glow,” Mr. Turner told NY1. He recalled leaving the house with wife, walking through water up to their chins, and escaping safely to his daughter’s house four blocks away. But his home of 14 years was gone. “You couldn’t walk into it, it was a smoldering heap,” he said. The former congressman, who was liked by his colleagues in Congress and many in the Orthodox Jewish community, told NY1 he’d absolutely not run for elected office again. “That’s just not in the cards,” he said. Lithuanian Ruling Party Lawmaker: Jews ‘Are Just Looking To Take Money’

A Lithuanian ruling party senior member suggested this week that Jews are only seeking the burden of others in making money. Bronius Bradauskas, chairman of the Lithuanian Parliamentary Committee on Budget and Finance, told the BNS news agency that, “Jews were just looking to take money,” JTA reports. Mr. Bradauskas made the statement in connection to a government proposal to grant additional pension payments to about 200 Lithuanian Righteous among the Nations, non-Jews recognized by the Yad Vashem Holocaust museum in Jerusalem for having risked their lives to rescue Jews during the Holocaust. “I do not see why the Lithuanian state should pay,” Mr. Bradauskas told BNS. “It would be quite logical if we turned to Israel, and that it should pay. But no, the Jews do not want to pay, they are just looking to take from Lithuania.” Lithuania’s Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius rushed to condemn his Party member’s comment. “I judge this statement to be very negative and it doesn’t represent the party’s position,” said Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius. A spokesperson for Butkevicius’ Social Democratic Party of Lithuania said the party “does not tolerate any forms of anti-Semitism.” According to JTA, Lithuania had a Jewish population of 250,000 in 1939 but 95 percent of its Jews were murdered during the Holocaust by Nazi soldiers and Lithuanian collaborators. Today Lithuania has some 5,000 Jews, according to the European Jewish Congress. (Jacob Kornbluh – YWN)

Mayor Bloomberg Launches Website Touting His ‘Extraordinary Record Of Progress’

As he prepares to leave City Hall after 12 years in office, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is attempting to secure his legacy with a website touting his “extraordinary record of progress,” TPM reports. Deputy Mayor for Government Affairs and Communications Howard Wolfson announced the website – Progress.MikeBloomberg.com – Monday in a memo sent to “interested parties.” Bloomberg’s website features infographics praising the mayor’s work in six core areas: “Public Safety,” “Green NYC,” “Jobs,” “Neighborhoods,” “Health & City Services” and “Youth.” Wolfson also said Bloomberg will “visit each of the five boroughs over the next five days to highlight key Administration initiatives and success from throughout the last 12 years. These events will highlight areas like parks, economic development, education, immigration, technology, transportation, infrastructure, livable cities, housing, crime, public health and the arts.” According to Wolfson, Bloomberg will give his last “major speech” as mayor “on the rise of American cities, the strategies needed to continue urban progress and the threats cities face” Wednesday at the Economic Club of New York. Mayor Bloomberg thinks Bill de Blasio should be thrilled at the condition of the city he’ll inherit, and his successor’s election was more about New Yorkers just wanting a change — any change, like shifting hemlines — than animosity toward the current administration. In his one before the last weekly radio interview with WOR radio’s John Gambling, Mayor Bloomberg said Bill de Blasio should be thrilled at the condition of the city he’ll inherit, and his successor’s election was more about New Yorkers just wanting a change than animosity toward the current administration. “We’re going to turn the city over to The de Blasio Administration in as good shape as we possibly can — crime’s going to be record low, test scores in schools are going to be at record highs, the budget is balanced, the culturals have never been stronger, park system is in unbelievably great shape,” Mr. Bloomberg said. “If I were that administration, I’d have a smile on my face and say, ‘You know, we’ve got a great hand to play and we can take it and go further.’ Some people say, ‘Oh, they’d be better off inheriting big problems,’ but that’s not true.” (Jacob Kornbluh – YWN)

Ukrainian Chief Rabbis Split Over Dealing With Opposition Movement

As Ukrainian Jewish leaders appear split over supporting the opposition movement protesting in Ukraine’s capital, Kiev, Ukraine’s Chief Rabbi is advocating the formation of a national unity government to resolve the country’s political crisis over its relationship with the European Union and Russia. U.S.-born Rabbi Yaakov Dov Bleich, head of the Jewish Confederation of Ukraine, told JTA on Monday that he was reaching out to opposition and government representatives in favor of unity within the framework of his involvement with the Uniting Ukraine committee — a forum for dialogue in civil society. “If it is so important for Ukraine to enter the European Union, let the opposition come into government and discuss ways to deal with the Russian threat regarding the gas supply and closing the border for Ukrainian exports if Ukraine moves toward euro integration,” Bleich told JTA. “It is necessary for Ukrainians to pool their resources to avoid bankruptcy.” On the other hand, Rabbi Moshe Azman, Chabad’s chief rabbi in Ukraine, told JTA the protests are “dangerous for the Jewish community.” They are described as a legitimate and peaceful expression of the “desire of the vast majority of the Ukrainian society to […] integrate into the European civilization” by Joseph Zissels and Meylakh Sheykhet of the Ukraine Association of Jewish Organizations and Communities, and the Union of Councils for the Jews in the Former Soviet Union, respectively. As Ukrainian Jewish Leaders Express Concern, Young Jews Join Anti-Government Movement

As Ukrainian protesters, gathered at Kiev’s Independence Square, threaten to march on President Viktor Yanukovych’s presidential palace and seal him inside if he does not give in to their demands, Jewish leaders told 124TV News that security details are being tightened to ensure protection from protesters with anti-Semitic tendencies who might try to scapegoat the Jewish community. “Now that streets across Ukraine are full of civilians, the community’s safety is becoming our primary concern,” Oleksandr Feldman, a Ukrainian lawmaker and president of the Ukrainian Jewish Committee, wrote in statement published last week by the Israeli Ma’ariv newspaper. Feldman called the protests “a tour de force by various opposition parties, from liberals who support ties with the European Union, to the ultrantionalist and anti-Russian Svoboda party.” The involvement of Svoboda “and other elements with anti-Semitic tendencies may lead to a situation where the Jewish community is made into a scapegoat,” Feldman warned. “We are on high alert.” Feldman added, “To a considerable degree, the Ukrainian Jewish community supports promoting a path toward merger into the European Union… but it is important to adopt a neutral and comprehensive position.” “We fear that this situation will get out of control,” Rabbi Pinchas Vishedski, head of the Jewish community organization in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, told JTA. “And when there is chaos, minorities will suffer, as our history tells us.” The chief Chabad rabbi of Ukraine, Moshe Azman, also condemned the protests as dangerous for the Jewish community. But despite the concerns and growing fear, according to JTA, a number of young Jews were seen involved in the protests, despite the fact that the diverse coalition of liberal youth and opposition party leaders included members of the ultranationalist Svoboda (Freedom) party, whose leader, Oleh Tyahnybok, has freely trafficked anti-Semitic stereotypes. “If the nationalists are in favor of a regime change in the country, and I am also, then they won’t prevent me from going out into the Maidan with everyone and expressing my opinions,” Evgenia Talinovskaya told JTA. “The EuroMaidan movement is primarily identified with the educated youth. And Jewish youth in Ukraine primarily fall under that description.” According to Meylakh Sheykhet, Ukraine director for the Union of Councils for Jews in the Former Soviet Union, “The community is very split on the issue of the protests. Generally speaking, the young generation of Jews, just like other young Ukrainians, support this revolution. But the older generation of Ukrainian Jews, the ones who grew up and were educated in the Soviet system, they are not in support. They are very pro-Russian.” “Svoboda is an opposition party to the current regime, and they are supporting this trend because it goes against the current regime,” Oxana Shevel, an associate professor of comparative politics at Tufts University., explained Jewish presence at the protests, in a correspondence with JTA. “Many Ukrainian Jews who considered themselves Jews first have left Ukraine already,” Ahava (Anuta) Teslenko, a 29-year-old model and television personality, explained her role in the anti-government movement. “So those who stayed, and who now make up the majority of the Jewish presence in Ukraine, consider themselves Ukrainian first Anna Furman, 22, echoed a similar sentiment that being Jewish is no obstacle to her passionate involvement in the fight for Ukraine’s future. “It’s important to note that healthy

Report: Israel’s New Ambassador To The US, Ron Dermer, Unfavorable To Obama’s WH

In a profile of Israel’s new Ambassador to DC, Ron Dermer, JTA’s Ron Kampeas points to the mistrust the Obama administration has developed against Prime Minister Netanyahu, that has already entrenched towards the supposed-to-be the government’s mediator in Washington. “Among the White House’s inner circle —Denis McDonough, Ben Rhodes— Dermer is a red flag,” Barak Ravid, Haaretz’s political correspondent told Politico, referring respectively to the White House chief of staff and deputy national security adviser. “They see him as the guy who incited Congress and Jewish organizations against Obama.” “It’s a reputation that Dermer’s defenders say is unfair—it does not take into account missteps by Obama and his team, and understates Netanyahu’s determinative role in shaping relations with Washington. But it is a reputation that continues to dog Dermer nonetheless,” writes Kampeas. “When I asked about him, a Democratic source on the Hill who is close to Jewish groups blamed Dermer for distributing talking points on Iran, critical of the White House, to Republican members of Congress. Asked for evidence, the source said, “Who else?” In July, when Dermer’s appointment was announced, a former Obama administration official told my news agency, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, that within the administration, Dermer was “seen as extremely political and as someone who has repeatedly gone to the press with negative stories.”” One reason, Kampeas points to the WH’s immediate mistrust of Dermer, is that Ron at the age of 23 took a job with GOP pollster Frank Luntz and helped design Newt Gingrich’s “Contract with America” — the Republican platform the GOP rode to victory and a House majority in 1994 for the first time in decades. Dermer is also suspect to punishement by the WH for, allegedly, intervening in the 2012 Presidential elections in favor of Mitt Romney. “Obama administration officials were appalled to learn from a Tablet Magazine profile of Dan Senor, a top adviser to Mitt Romney, that the GOP presidential candidate’s 2012 trip to Israel was not only organized by Senor and Dermer—during Senor’s trip to Israel for his niece’s bat mitzvah—but that Dermer helped keep it quiet, in part to keep the Obama campaign from organizing its own last-minute stopover,” writes Kampeas. But overall, it is the intimate relationship with Prime minister Netanyahu what the Obama administration fears the most of. His predecessor  Michael Oren says he believes that Dermer can and will overcome the suspicion that he was an architect of the Netanyahu-Obama tensions. “I understand that was the perception of him, but the reality is going to be different, because it has to be,” Oren told Kampeas. “He’s going to understand that to be an effective ambassador, he has to be scrupulously bipartisan.” Kampeas notes, “at a [Nov. 20,2013] off-the-record meeting with pro-Israel lawmakers, Dermer showed signs that he is softening his elbows. “There is a sense of unease among some members, even pro-Israel members, with how Israel has inserted itself into this [Iran] debate,” according to a Democratic staffer who attended the meeting. “There’s something strange about a country lobbying Congress.” Rep Adam Schiff (D-CA) pressed Dermer, ‘Was it a good idea for Israel to get between Congress and the Obama administration on the potential for a sanctions-for-nuclear rollback deal then brewing with the Iranians in Geneva?’ “There was an awkward silence, and Dermer answered

Norwegian Government Official: Jews, Muslims Circumcise Out of Ignorance

The Norwegian government’s child welfare adviser said Jews and Muslims would stop circumcising children if they learn more about the risks and pain that the procedure involves, JTA reports. New legislation on non-medical circumcision of boys under 18 is scheduled to be introduced before mid-April. “With good information about risk, pain and lack of health benefits of the intervention, I think parents from minorities would voluntarily abstain from circumcising children,” Anne Lindboe, Norway’s Children’s Ombudsmen, told the Norwegian Aftenpost daily last week. Lindboe, who last year advised Jews and Muslims to replace circumcision with “a symbolic ritual,” also told the paper that non-medical circumcision of pre-teen boys should be outlawed. “We introduced a law on violence against children even though we had reason to believe that individuals would still be beaten and mistreated,” she said. “If 15 years is set as the minimum age, we expect Norwegian parents follow and respect the law,” Lindboe added. “I think it’s disrespectful towards minorities to assume that they are going to break the law.” But Norway’s new Foreign Minister Børge Brende assured senior officials of the Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) that “the Norwegian Government recognizes the importance of ritual male circumcision for the Jewish community in Norway…[and] it will not propose a ban on ritual circumcision.” Rabbi Abraham Cooper, the Center’s Associate Dean and Mark Weitzman, its Director of Government Affairs, commended “the Government of Norway for declaring their commitment not to ban brit milah and for reaffirming their commitment to protecting ‘religious freedom as enshrined in international law.’” (YWN Headquarters – NYC)

WH Official: Netanyahu’s Pushback On Iran Deal Will Lead To War

Israel’s proposal that Iran totally dismantle its nuclear capacity in exchange for sanctions relief would likely lead to war, a top White House official told think tanks and advocacy groups sympathetic to the Obama administration’s Iran strategy, in a conference call on Wednesday. According to the recording, obtained by JTA on condition that it not name the participants or fully quote them, the White House official said that given a choice between “total capitulation” and advancing toward a nuclear weapon, Iran would choose the weapon. That posture, the official said, would “close the door on diplomacy” and would “essentially lead to war.” The official sounded notes of frustration with Israel’s pushback against the U.S. proposal for a “first step” deal that would exchange some sanctions relief for some rollback of Iran’s nuclear program, overlooking the six-month window opportunity to influence the deal. Following ‘Nazi-Rally’, Brandeis U Suspends Partnership With Palestinian Al-Quds

Brandeis University has suspended its partnership with the Palestinian Al-Quds University, JTA reports. Brandeis University President Frederick Lawrence made the announcement Monday, saying the university will re-evaluate the relationship in the future. The universities have been sister institutions since 1998. The decision was made in light of recent events at the university, which has campuses in Jerusalem, Abu-Dis and Al-Bireh, including a Nov. 5 Nazi-style demonstration at the main campus. During the rally, Groups of Al Quds students dressed in black military gear and armed with fake automatic weapons marched on the school’s campus, while waving flags and raising the traditional Nazi salute, according to pictures first posted by Middle East analyst Tom Gross. According to JTA, following the demonstration Lawrence called called on Al-Quds President Sari Nusseibeh to issue in Arabic and English a condemnation of the demonstration. But in a statement issued to Al-Quds students Sunday, Nusseibeh said that “Jewish extremists” were using the demonstration to “capitalize on events in ways that misrepresent the university as promoting inhumane, anti-Semitic, fascist, and Nazi ideologies.” Without these ideologies, he said “there would not have been the massacre of the Jewish people in Europe; without the massacre, there would not have been the enduring Palestinian catastrophe.” “As occurred recently, these opportunists are quick to describe the Palestinians as a people undeserving of freedom and independence, and as a people who must be kept under coercive control and occupation. They cite these events as evidence justifying their efforts to muster broad Jewish and western opinion to support their position. This public opinion, in turn, sustains the occupation, the extension of settlements and the confiscation of land, and prevents Palestinians from achieving our freedom,” Nusseibeh wrote. The Brandeis University statement called Nusseibeh’s message “unacceptable and inflammatory.” “While Brandeis has an unwavering commitment to open dialogue on difficult issues, we are also obliged to recognize intolerance when we see it, and we cannot – and will not – turn a blind eye to intolerance,” the statement read. “As a result, Brandeis is suspending its partnership with Al-Quds University effective immediately. We will reevaluate our relationship with Al-Quds based on future events,” it added. (Jacob Kornbluh – YWN)
