Classified Documents Forgotten At Ben-Gurion Airport By National Security Council Aide

The head of the National Security Council (NSC), Meir Ben-Shabbat and members of the security delegation traveled to an important meeting with the Prime Minister of India and senior officials of the defense establishment in India about four months ago. They reviewed classified documents before boarding the plane but forgot the documents in the restaurant of the airport where they sat. Haaretz reported on Wednesday that an aide to Ben-Shabbat prepared classified documents ahead of the meetings with Indian Prime Minister Nerandra Modi. The documents in question dealt with arms deals between the two countries, which were to be discussed at the meeting. The waiter responsible for the shift found the documents, but the team was already on the plane. He contacted the Israeli embassy in India and the documents were transferred to the embassy’s security officer, thus avoiding a diplomatic-security disaster. Following an investigation conducted by the NSC, the assistant was accused of losing the documents but received only a warning. Ben Shabbat, arrived in India this January for a meeting with India’s National Security Adviser, Agit Duvall, and continued meetings with the director-general of the Indian Ministry of Defense and Foreign Affairs and heads of the security organizations in the country. TOUGH-TALK: Syria is Threatening to Bomb Ben-Gurion Airport

After Israel earlier this week confirmed the Israel Air Force (IAF) bombed Iranian targets in Syria, Syria’s Ambassador to the United Nations Bashar Jafari on Tuesday warned that his country would attack Ben-Gurion International Airport with the help of Tehran’s allies if Israel does not halt bomb targets in Syria. “Syria will practice its legitimate right of self-defense and respond to the Israeli aggression on Damascus International Airport in the same way on Tel Aviv airport,” Ambassador Jafari told UN Security Council members, stating emphatically that if Israeli aggression continues, Syria will act. There have been numerous additional attacks in Syria during the past year, with the international community pointing a finger at Israel, but until this week, Jerusalem has not confirmed that it attacked Iranian targets in worn-torn Syria. It is quite clear that the aerial attacks conducted by Israel have receive the tacit approval of both the White House and Kremlin. After Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu confirmed the aerial assault, he came under mounting criticism among fellow legislators, with some turning to state legal authorities to become involved. PM Netanyahu responded to the Syrian threat saying, “Our response will be fatal”. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

VIDEO: A Look At The Operations Center Of Ben-Gurion International Airport

(VIDEO IN EXTENDED ARTICLE) The accompanying video provides a look at the heart of Ben-Gurion International Airport, its operations center. We learn how the airport manages the 650 incoming and outgoing flights daily, which carry over 100,000 passengers a day – how this is all managed and how the airport remains in contact with European and other officials. Personnel maintain contact with the International Civil Aviation Organization and are constantly busying themselves with flow management of flights entering and leaving Israeli airspace, which is known to be quite small and congested. We see what occurs when an emergency is declared and how agencies respond from inside the airport as well as from the Gush Dan area. Whatever the weather or conditions, the airport handles over 152,000 international and over 4,600 domestic flights annually, working their hardest that these flights are uneventful and operate on schedule. TRAGEDY AVERTED: Ben-Gurion Airport Collision Involving Planes Avoided At The Last Moment

A potentially horrific collision was prevented at Ben-Gurion International Airport on Tuesday by the vigilance of the control tower. An Airbus A320 from EasyJet Airline began heading down a runway without being cleared, at the same time an executive plane was touching down on another lane. The control tower agent realized what was unfolding and ordered the pilot to halt immediately, thereby preventing a collision. According to Ynet, the incident took place just before 7:30PM. The Airbus A320 EasyJet plane, which took off for Venice in a westward direction on Runway 26, was stopped after it began its takeoff without authorization following a directive from an inspector in the control tower. The inspector spotted the executive jet, a Bombardier Challenger 350 aircraft from Austria that had begun landing on Runway 12 that intersected with the track the EasyJet plane trying to take off. This is not the first-time a near-miss incident occurred at Ben-Gurion Airport. In January of this year a serious disaster was prevented when a FedEx cargo plane that arrived from Athens to Ben-Gurion Airport was forced to perform a sharp maneuver in the air in order to avoid a collision with a UN plane that took off from S’dei Dov Airport against standard protocol. The two aircraft were at a speed of 700 kilometers per hour and a few dozen meters opposite each other off the Tel Aviv shoreline, and the Boeing 757 cargo plane pilot noticed the King Air plane opposite it, managed to maneuver in the air, thus preventing a major disaster. The incident was probed by investigators in the Ministry of Transport. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Students Fume At Pro-BDS Band’s Performance At Ben-Gurion University

Students at Ben-Gurion University expressed outrage over a scheduled musical performance on campus by the pro-BDS group, DAM. The Israeli-Arab hip-hop group is scheduled to perform Monday at Ben-Gurion University’s “Student House,” in an event organized by the university’s Student Union. The controversial band regularly promotes anti-Israel rhetoric in its songs, and has called for BDS, equated Israel to Nazi Germany, and labelled Zionism as “racist and terrorist.” Students from the Zionist organization Im Tirtzu sent a letter to Ben-Gurion University president, Rivka Carmi, and started an online petition calling on the university to cancel the event. “Rather than promoting reconciliation, coexistence and understanding,” charged the letter, “you chose to invite a group to campus that promotes hatred, incitement, calls to refuse IDF enlistment, called the State of Israel ‘Nazis,’ and supports the BDS movement.” In their letter to Carmi, the student activists also called attention to the fact that the Student Union receives funding from the university, which is funded by public funds. “If David Ben-Gurion were alive to see this radical performance occurring in the university named after him, he would not stand idly by,” said Yuval Varsulker, coordinator of Im Tirtzu’s Ben-Gurion University branch. Dov Trachtman, a masters student from Sderot, called the performance a “disgrace.” “As a resident of Sderot that has been suffering from incessant rocket fire and incendiary bombs, it is a disgrace that the university is hosting a band that encourages Gaza ‘freedom fighters,’ said Trachtman. “And this is all occurring in an institution that is funded by public funds,” added Trachtman. Ben-Gurion University responded: “The principle of academic and artistic freedom of expression stands at the base of every academic institution, provided that it does not harm state security and operates according to law. The performance of said band is within the framework of an event by Arab students on campus and was duly approved by the relevant bodies within the framework of the institution’s accepted practices.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Israel Detains Prominent Jewish-American Critic at Ben-Gurion Airport

A prominent Jewish-American commentator who has been critical of Israel’s policies said Monday that he was detained by Israeli airport authorities and interrogated about his political views before he was allowed to enter the country. The questioning of Peter Beinart was the latest in a string of incidents in which Jewish critics of Israel have been interrogated about their politics by border officials. The Israeli government called the incident a mistake. Beinart, a contributor to The Atlantic, CNN and the Israeli daily Haaretz, considers himself a supporter of Israel, but has been an outspoken critic of the government’s hard-line policies toward the Palestinians and close alliance with President Donald Trump. He has warned of a growing rift between Israel and the predominantly liberal Jewish-American community, and said that Israel must establish a Palestinian state to ensure its survival as a Jewish-majority democracy. Such views are shared by many on Israel’s political left. In an interview, Beinart said he was pulled aside when he arrived with his family on Sunday to attend a relative’s bat mitzvah. Beinart said he was sent to a small room where a security official asked about his political activities and whether he was involved in groups that advocate violence, threaten democracy or promote anarchy. Beinart said he was then asked about his participation in a nonviolent West Bank protest two years ago. He said the interview ended after he said he would not be joining any protests on his current visit. He was released after calling a well-known Israeli human rights lawyer. In all, he said he was held for over an hour. Beinart called his experience “trivial” when compared to the experiences of others, particularly Palestinians and Palestinian Americans who travel through Israel’s main international airport. “My hope would be that this provokes a conversation more generally about the way in which Israel harasses people based on their political views,” he said. “The real scandal is what happens to people who are much more vulnerable than me because they don’t have the privilege that I have as an American Jew.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said that upon learning of Beinart’s detention he immediately asked Israeli security officials what happened and was told it was an “administrative mistake.” “Israel is an open society which welcomes all – critics and supporters alike,” his office said. “Israel is the only country in the Middle East where people voice their opinions freely and robustly.” The Shin Bet internal security service apologized for causing any anguish and said it was investigating. In recent weeks, a left-wing Israeli author who lives in the U.S. said he was detained at the airport for a “cautionary conversation” about his political activities, while two Jewish-American women involved in Israeli left-wing causes were questioned about their political work with Palestinians while entering the country from Egypt. Israel has also begun enforcing a ban on foreign activists who support boycotts of the country. (AP)

Ben-Gurion Airport: Arab Broke into a Vehicle & Stole an M16 Rifle

The Israel Police arrested an Arab resident of a Jerusalem seamline community who broke into a car into a vehicle in the Terminal 3 parking lot at Ben-Gurion Airport and stole an M-16 automatic rifle from it. An Israeli police investigation led to the arrest and indictment of 36-year-old Nur al-Din Jazawi, a resident of A-Ram, north of Jerusalem, after he broke into a car at Ben-Gurion Airport and stole a short M-16 assault rifle and a suitcase with personal belongings. The incident occurred on 28 Tammuz, but it was just cleared for publication on Wednesday, 20 Menachem Av. A female soldier arrived at the airport with her sister to pick up a relative arriving on a flight from abroad. The soldier sitting in the front seat put her weapon under the seat and placed her bag on the rear seat, containing two full magazines. The two women parked the car in the parking lot near Terminal 3, and the soldier decided to leave the weapon in the car and put the briefcase on the seat to conceal it. The defendant, who arrived at Ben-Gurion Airport in a vehicle, parked his car in the Terminal 3 area and began to walk around the parking lot, armed with an electronic device enabling the opening of a vehicle from a distance. He came across the soldier’s vehicle, which he opened, and then saw items inside. He walked away, returning a few minutes later after preparing for the theft, with his shirt lifted to hide his face, taking the weapon and putting it in the suitcase that was in the vehicle, and then left in a taxi that took him to Beit Haninah in Jerusalem. An Israeli police team at Ben-Gurion Airport opened an investigation into the incident and arrested him on 5 Av. The investigation revealed that the suspect had arrived in Ramallah not long after the break-in, where he wanted to sell the stolen items. Police have not yet recovered the stolen automatic weapon, which he likely sold. In the interrogation of the defendant, the investigators managed to collect evidence against him regarding his involvement in additional burglaries he committed against vehicles in Ohr Yehuda, where he stole a purse with credit cards, cash and personal belongings, and a second laptop and documents. An indictment was filed against the defendant along with a request that he be held without bail. Police call on the tzibur at large to refrain from leaving weapons in parked vehicles, adding that in general, the ‘abandonment of weapons’ constitutes a criminal offense. STRIKE: Ben-Gurion Airport Moving To ‘Yom Kippur’ Status At Week’s End

The employees of the Israel Airports Authority issued a surprising announcement, according to which Ben-Gurion Airport will operate on Yom Kippur format come the week’s end. Some 28,000 passengers on 180 flights face having to make alternative travel arrangements due to the skeleton staff that would be on duty. The background to the strike, is an attempt by Interior Minister Aryeh Deri to collect municipal property taxes from the Authority, and distribute them to the surrounding towns. Union chief Pinchas Idan blamed the Interior Ministry for the planned strike, saying that it was placing the IAA in an impossible situation. “This is an attempt to create facts on the ground and a political power play in the year that local elections [are scheduled], with the goal of raising money from the IAA in order to solve local problems facing towns in the surrounding area, and all this before a court hearing has been held on the issue. Illegal Nationals Smuggled Into Israel Via Ben-Gurion International Airport

This is how according to police, they smuggled foreign nationals into Ben-Gurion Airport into Israel. A government office worker and an airport employee were arrested on suspicion of smuggling Georgian citizens to Israel via Ben-Gurion Airport – “The subjects were instructed to come dressed in clothes that would appear to be border inspectors, thus helping them circumvent the border control”. The suspects were arrested at the end of a covert investigation by the Israel Police at Ben-Gurion Airport, an investigation that began in June after immigration inspectors seized several dozen Georgian citizens. On Shabbos, as noted, an employee of a government ministry employed at the port was arrested, as well as a 28-year-old land steward on suspicion of smuggling foreign nationals to Israel, allegedly with the cooperation of some Georgian officials. According to the suspicions, the two instructed the subjects to come dressed in clothes that would appear to be border inspectors, and through them the free access granted to them by virtue of their duties helped the subjects bypass the border control and enter Israel. The police suspect that every citizen smuggled into Israel paid the suspects thousands of dollars. Shefi Paz, one of the leaders of the struggle to fight infiltrators, said when the case was exposed, we were dealing with ‘Chelm’ as infiltrators were getting off the plane and immediately running for asylum. Meet the new wave of infiltrators. Get off the plane and run directly to apply for asylum in Chelm. The sting begins in the mother countries, continues at Ben-Gurion Airport and ends with the Interior Ministry’s asylum applications unit. On the way there are smuggling nets that distribute lots of coupons. The Population and Migration Authority is aware of the situation and is working to the best of its ability. But it does not have manpower, and they know it.” Paz refers to the operation as a ” is a modern slave trade” rushing to the High Court of Justice.” (YWN – Israel Desk, Jerusalem)

Ben-Gurion University: Arabs Will Be Accepted Without Psychometric Exams

Ben-Gurion University has decided that beginning next year, it is going to accept Arab students without having first taken the psychometric exam, which is a requirement for all to enter a university. The announcement was made by university president, Rivka Carmi. Applicants to colleges and university take the psychometric exam and based on their score together with the level of their matriculation diploma from high school, one is determined eligible to enter university to study a profession. For example, to enter medical school one needs a combined score of at least 737 as compared to the score required to become a teacher, which is 550. The objections to the university’s decision are being heard among many in the academic community, as well as in Knesset. MK (Yisrael Beitenu) Oded Forer sent a letter to the president, decrying her decision to wave the psychometric exam for Arab applicants, calling the decision discriminatory against citizens “who serve and contribute to the State of Israel”. Forer is speaking of Jewish citizens who enter the IDF and national service, while Arabs, who by and large do not serve in any capacity, are now being given a free pass to enter university. Forer questions if “the blood of Arabs redder than the blood of discharged soldiers and new immigrants?” Forer is demanding that if this new track is opening, then it includes others and not remain exclusively for Arab applicants to the school. Due to all of these factors combined we saved this man’s life today.” Uziyahu said that he received the call via the emergency medical application on his phone which notified him about the emergency. He told the dispatch center that he was enroute to the spot of the emergency and arrived in less than three minutes from the time that the heart attack occurred. “It is not a question of being in the right place at the right time.
