8,000 Israelis A Day Can Pass Through Ben-Gurion As Quota Is Lifted

Up to 8,000 Israelis are permitted to fly in and out of Israel after the daily cap of 3,000 Israelis a day expired on Motzei Shabbos at midnight following the Supreme Court’s ruling last week that the restriction is unconstitutional. About 60 flights are scheduled to land and depart from Ben-Gurion Airport on Sunday, two days before elections. Passengers will no longer be required to have their temperatures checked before entering the terminal and boarding. Israelis traveling abroad still must present a negative coronavirus test before returning back to Israel and be retested upon landing in Israel. In a further easing of travel restrictions, The Taba Border Crossing between Israel and Egypt also reopened at midnight. Non-Israeli citizens are still only allowed to enter Israel under special circumstances after receiving permission from the exceptions committee. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

80% Of Those Arriving At Ben-Gurion Violate Quarantine, Report Says

An astonishing 80% of Israelis arriving back into the country violate quarantine, with only 1 out of 5 passengers adhering to regulations, Channel 12 News reported on Sunday evening. The report added that about 20% of Israeli travelers successfully avoid the mandatory coronavirus test at the airport. Data shows that this situation has resulted in at least 1,838 Israelis entering Israel while carrying COVID-19. The Health Ministry’s electronic tracking bracelet pilot program, which ended on Friday, was successful, with only six participants violating quarantine requirements but it cannot be continued until legislation allowing the surveillance program is passed. Currently, Israeli travelers arriving in Israel are allowed to quarantine at home with no surveillance other than potential police calls and visits since quarantine hotels are no longer required. Israel Extends Closure Of Ben-Gurion Airport For 2 More Weeks

Israel’s cabinet on Thursday after midnight extended the closure of Ben-Gurion Airport to commercial flights for another two weeks, until February 21. Israelis will be unable to enter or exit the country except under very specific circumstances approved by the newly formed Exceptions Committee. Israelis outside Israel can request permission to enter Israel via online forms available on the websites of the Foreign Ministry, Health Ministry, the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Interior Ministry’s Population Authority. Israelis can request approval to enter Israel for urgent medical treatment including women in their third trimester of pregnancy who wish to give birth in Israel; to attend the levaya of a first-degree relative; to accompany a body into Israel for burial; to aid an immediate relative in need of assistance; to take part in legal proceedings; to participate in a humanitarian mission, and to participate in a state delegation, as approved by the Foreign Ministry, Defense Ministry or Prime Minister’s Office. In addition, professional athletes and coaches can apply for permits to participate in official international competitions. Israelis may request approval to leave Israel for the above reasons as well. Non-Israeli citizens can request permission to enter Israel for specific purposes such as aliyah that cannot be postponed. Israelis who left the country before January 25, when the skies were closed, will be allowed to return to Israel by Sunday but will be required to quarantine in state-run hotels upon arrival. “Ben-Gurion Airport Must Stay Closed For A Month,” Public Health Official Says

Israel’s Health Ministry confirmed 4,868 new coronavirus cases on Monday, with tests showing a positivity rate of 9.3%. There are currently 70,836 active virus cases, including 67,493 patients at home, 1,465 at coronavirus hotels, and 1,878 patients being treated at hospitals. A total of 1,140 patients are seriously ill and a record-high number of 358 patients are ventilated – the highest number since the start of the pandemic. The death toll has risen to 4,419. Dr. Alroy-Preis told the Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee on Monday that an extended ban on international flights is the only way to battle the UK variant and buy time to vaccinate most of Israel’s population. “The decision to close Ben Gurion Airport for six days will not be enough,” she said. “We’ll have to extend the closure by at least a few weeks to buy time for the vaccination campaign.” “The UK variant is 50% more contagious. Furthermore, about 40% of current infections are being diagnosed in children versus 29% when we emerged from the second lockdown. We’re seeing an increase in infections in 1st through 4th graders (ages 6-9), which is precisely the age group that is due to return to their classrooms [when the lockdown is lifted].” Alroy-Preis added that the high number of seriously ill patients, including the unprecedented number of ventilated patients, which is increasing despite the falling number of new daily cases, is due to the British variant. “We’re seeing a very rapid spread [of the variant],” she said. “The UK variant is behind at least 50% of new cases.” Coronavirus czar Prof. Nachman Ash reiterated Alroy-Preis’s message, telling Radio 103FM on Monday morning that the British variant which is rapidly spreading through Israel has prevented the lockdown from curbing the infection rate. Ash said that new information from the UK indicates that the variant causes serious illness at a 30% higher rate. There are also preliminary indications that the virus causes 30% increased mortality. Israel Considers Banning All Outbound Travel, Health Ministry Says To Close Ben-Gurion

As coronavirus cases continue to soar in Israel despite the current strict lockdown, with the positivity rate on Monday standing at 9.1%, the highest in over two months, the Israeli government is considering banning all non-urgent travel from Israel. In an emergency meeting called by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Sunday evening, ministers discussed requiring travelers to present a negative coronavirus test prior to boarding flights to Israel, possibly banning all non-urgent travel, and requiring returning travelers from additional countries to isolate in state-run hotels. Health Minister Yuli Edelstein told Army Radio on Monday that ministers will convene on Tuesday to make final decisions regarding travel restrictions. It is expected that the ministers will also extend the current lockdown, which is scheduled to end on Thursday, for another week. Health Ministry official Dr. Orly Greenfeld told Ynet on Monday that she recommends closing Ben-Gurion entirely for a short time to prevent further cases of the South African variant and other variants from entering the country. “In terms of health, it would have been better to close Ben-Gurion Airport,” Greenfeld said. “The more people stay put, the less chances any new variants of the virus will make their way into Israel.” “This is something we must do as soon as possible in order to stop [the spread of the South African variant],” said Greenfeld. “The British variant is already here, apparently 20% of all verified cases are due to the British variant.” “There are currently 20 patients who were found afflicted with the South African variant. In the last two days we discovered that several of them have recently returned from Dubai. This has led us to decide that all those returning from the UAE and Brazil will be taken to isolation in a hotel, which was implemented very quickly.” At the meeting, a decision was made requiring Israelis returning from the United Arab Emirates and Brazil to quarantine in state-run hotels. The decision went into effect on Monday and will be in effect until January 27, 2021. A decision for travelers from South Africa and Zambia was extended for another ten days, also until January 27, 2021. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Israel’s 1st Vaccines Arriving On Thursday, Ceremony To Be Held At Ben-Gurion

Israel’s first vaccines, 110,000 Pfizer doses, are expected to arrive in Israel on Thursday. The shipment will be delivered by United Airlines’s United Cargo, which has established a special unit adapted for the needs of distribution of coronavirus vaccines worldwide. The vaccines for Israel are being delivered from United Cargo’s European distribution center in state-of-the-art temperature-controlled shipping containers. Dozens of company representatives will accompany the delivery on Thursday, which is serving as a pilot program for the delicate transit and storage of the Pfizer vaccines, which require storage at a temperature of -70°C (-94°F). A welcoming ceremony will take place at Ben-Gurion Airport. A larger shipment of vaccines is scheduled to arrive in Israel on Friday and a total of 4 million vaccine doses are expected to arrive in Israel by the end of December, enough for two million people. Each person is required to receive two vaccine doses, with a booster shot administered 28 days after the first shot. Israel signed an agreement with Moderna on Friday to increase the number of vaccines it is purchasing from the company from two million to six million, enough for three million Israelis. The Health Ministry has requested that Israel’s Kupot Cholim prepare to inoculate two million Israelis against the coronavirus within six weeks. The Kupot Cholim currently have the capacity to inoculate about 80,000 Israelis a day, according to a report by Kan News. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

COVID-19 Testing Facility Inaugurated At Ben-Gurion Airport

Ben-Gurion Airport’s coronavirus testing facility was inaugurated on Monday in an official ceremony attended by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu‏‏, Health Minister Yuli Edelstein, Transportation Minister Miri Regev, and other senior officials. The “Check2Fly” testing lab offers two testing options, one costing only NIS 45 ($13.18), with results within 14 hours, and the other costing NIS 135 ($39.55), with results within four hours. Passengers can either arrive at the drive-in testing center near Terminal 3 up to 72 hours before their flight and then return to pick up their results on the day of their flight or can be tested with the rapid test on the same day as their flight. Passengers returning to Israel will also be able to be tested at the airport but will still have to quarantine even if their result is negative. However, passengers that can show proof of two negative tests several days apart will be allowed to quarantine for 12 days rather than 14. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Ben-Gurion Airport Installs Rapid COVID-19 Testing Booths

Rapid coronavirus testing centers have been installed at Ben-Gurion Airport and will begin operating on November 9, pending Health Ministry approval, Globes reported. The testing centers, to be operated by Omega in cooperation with Haifa’s Rambam Medical Center, will enable Israelis to pay a far lower price for coronavirus tests required by some countries abroad. There will be two testing options, one costing only NIS 45 ($13.18), with results within 14 hours, and the other costing NIS 135 ($39.55), with results within four hours. The tests, to be conducted at booths situated near Terminal 3, will immediately be transferred to the nearby laboratory and after the results are received, travelers will receive a “medical passport” in English to present to countries abroad. Meanwhile, Omega is contacting travel agents, pitching block bookings of the coronavirus tests, enabling travel agents and airlines to include pre-purchased COVID-19 tests at Ben-Gurion as part of a package deal to customers. The offer to travel agents who wish to “provide their customers with an efficient, swift and convenient testing service” boasts that “the Check2Fly laboratory is the winner of the coronavirus testing tender for people in Israel flying abroad. The innovative laboratory and its testing team are deployed at Ben Gurion airport 24/7.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Etihad Airways launched a website in Hebrew last week in order to better serve potential Israeli customers, the first non-Israeli airline to do so. “This is a historic and exciting day for the state of Israel and represents the beginning of an economic boom with new markets and the opening of the skies to new exciting destinations,” Transportation Minister Miri Regev said. “I want to thank all the professional organizations in the Transportation Ministry, Israel Airports Authority and Civil Aviation Authority that brought this agreement to completion in record time and wish success to all the Israeli airlines that will establish new routes to Abu Dhabi and Dubai as well as to other countries in the Gulf in the future.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Ben-Gurion Will Stay Open During Lockdown But No New Flights Allowed

Israel’s Health Ministry said on Monday that Ben-Gurion airport will remain open during the upcoming nationwide lockdown but only flights that have already been scheduled will be permitted to take off and land. No new flights will be approved as long as the lockdown is in effect. New olim are an exception to the rule and will be permitted to fly into Israel. Israelis traveling to the airport during the lockdown for previously scheduled flights, bearing valid tickets in the four hours before their flight, will not be fined for traveling more than 500 meters from their homes. Only those bearing valid tickets will be allowed through police checkpoints at the airport. The Health Ministry added that two “green” states that Israelis are currently allowed to visit without being required to quarantine upon their return home – Bulgaria and Croatia – may soon have their “green status” revoked. That would leave Greece as the only “green” country that accepts Israeli tourists upon proof of negative coronavirus results. The lockdown goes into effect on Erev Rosh Hashanah, on Friday at 2 p.m. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Escape From Lockdown: Tens Of Thousands Of Israelis Flock To Ben-Gurion In Mass Exodus

The walls of Ben-Gurion airport are witness to a sight not seen in months as Israelis fill the airport like the pre-coronavirus days of yore. It seems as if tens of thousands of Israeli booked tickets out of the country as soon as they heard the announcement of another nationwide lockdown on Sunday evening. All travel agencies throughout Israel have reported a sudden and sharp rise in sales. The majority of Israelis chose (out of the quite limited options of countries accepting Israeli tourists) to spend their quarantine in Greece and flights to Crete, Rhodes and Athens are departing Wednesday through Friday. Some Israelis are traveling to Bulgaria and Croatia, which also accept Israeli tourists, although the Health Ministry stated on Monday that the two countries may soon have their green status revoked, forcing Israeli to quarantine upon their return home. הבריחה מהסגר יציאת מצרים לפנות בוקר ב #נתבג pic.twitter.com/srpxoHyv6R — דודי רובינשטיין – חול מהודר (@hul_meudar) September 15, 2020 “Over the last 48 hours, and especially since last night, we’ve seen a jump in demand for overseas bookings,” said Gil Stav, deputy manager of Israir’s marketing and sales department. “Most of the demand has been for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday and people are booking flights for a long period of 10 days, two weeks or even more.” “We succeeded in expanding our flight schedule to the green destinations and added over five new flights departing Wednesday through Friday before the chag. And despite the fact that a final decision hasn’t been made about the scope of activity at Ben Gurion Airport after Rosh Hashanah, we are also seeing an increase in bookings for next week.” An employee of a company that offers vacation packages with flights through the Greek airline Blue Bird Airlines said that bookings have doubled and continue to increase. “Thursday is expected to be the busiest day at Ben-Gurion Airport since the pandemic began. Blue Bird alone is operating eight full flights on Thursday.” “There is a very high demand for Greece especially and then for Turkey, Bulgaria and Croatia,” an Airports Authority source said. “Eilat is closed and the demand for vacations abroad has risen sharply in recent days. People don’t want to be stuck at home for three weeks.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

COVID-19 Lab To Open At Ben-Gurion Airport Within 45 Days

Omega testing company, in cooperation in Rambam Medical Center, has won the tender to operate a coronavirus testing lab at Ben-Gurion Airport, the Transportation Ministry announced on Monday evening. The cost for each test of NIS 44.88 ($13.38), which will provide results within 14 hours, is less than half of the expected cost. The lab will also offer an option of a fast-track-test that will provide results within four hours for NIS 135 ($40.26), far less than the hundreds of shekels it cost in private labs. Omega is establishing a testing center in Terminal 3 of Ben-Gurion as well as a “drive-in” testing center. It will also establish an app and online management system through which clients will be able to book appointments to be tested, receive their results and be issued a medical passport in Hebrew and English, or any other language required. Over 150 companies had expressed interest in opening a testing lab at Ben-Gurion and 90 companies registered for the tender but ultimately only seven submitted bids. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

As Ben-Gurion CEO Says No Full Flights Until July, El Al Union Heads Wreak Chaos In Meeting, Knocking Over Chairs & Coffee

Senior officials from the Health Ministry, the National Security Council and Home Front Command toured Ben-Gurion Airport on Monday morning in anticipation of a return to the normal operation of commercial flights to Israel and its subsequent positive effect on the economy. However, according to Shmuel Zakai, the CEO of Ben-Gurion, normal operations of flights won’t begin before July. “None of us wants infections to break out in Israel again and we all know that the virus came to Israel by air,” Zakai said. “According to the current pace, we’ll have dozens of flights to Ben-Gurion in mid-July and not before, maybe half a million passengers by then or in mid-September. As long as there is no vaccine and the virus can still spread from one country to another, there won’t be a significant change.” Zakai added that flights will resume in June only to countries with low infection rates, such as Cyprus, Montenegro, Paphos, Greek Islands, Georgia and Slovenia. According to Zakai, if the amount of passengers at Ben-Gurion in the next two years is one third the amount in 2019, then Israel is doing well. מנהל נתב"ג שמואל זכאי בתום סיור עם נציגי משרד הבריאות לקראת חידוש הטיסות: "טיסות לקפריסין יחלו רק בסוף יוני-תחילת יולי. עשרות טיסות ביום יהיו רק במהלך יולי"@ittaishick pic.twitter.com/YnonFvmqcm — כאן חדשות (@kann_news) May 25, 2020 Amidst the ongoing tension in the airline industry, the heads of the El Al union were suspended by the Histadrut after a labor meeting erupted into chaos, with chairs knocked over on the floor and coffee cups spilled on the table. Some media outlets said that the meeting was between the Histadrut labor federation, the heads of El Al and the union leaders but a Ynet report said that the union leaders disrupted a meeting between El al and the Histadrut, wreaking havoc to sabotage the talks. The Ynet report quoted the union leaders as saying that 50% of El Al pilots who were laid off due to coronavirus travel restrictions were rehired but almost all other workers remain on unpaid leave, what they called “bullying behavior.” El Al, which was struggling financially even before the coronavirus pandemic began, is on the verge of collapse. During the height of the coronavirus pandemic, it was forced to reduce its workforce by 90% and take funds from its pension accounts. Currently, its only hope is a government bailout to Israel’s only national airline. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Israel: 16,539, 262 Deaths, Ben-Gurion Airport Reportedly Reopening On June 1

There are 16,539 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Israel as of Wednesday, an increase of only 13 cases in 24 hours. A total of 61 patients are in serious condition of whom 51 are ventilated. The death toll has risen to 262. A total of 12,173 patients have recovered from the virus, leaving only 4,104 active cases. Authorities are preparing a plan for a full reopening of Ben-Gurion Airport by June 1, Channel 12 News reported. The first two countries that will reopen their borders to Israel and vice versa will reportedly be Greece and Cyprus. Magen David Adom closed their drive-through testing stations for the coronavirus this week. The stations were established at the height of the coronavirus pandemic to enable Israelis to be tested for the coronavirus in a quick and efficient way and with minimal exposure of healthcare workers to potential coronavirus carriers. MDA staff tested a total of 272,016 people for the coronavirus, 97,526 in drive-through stations, 93,220 in homes, and 81,540 in nursing homes and other facilities.

Why Did The Chabad Shaliach Make A Bris In Ben-Gurion Over A Month Late?

The coronavirus pandemic has caused many incidents that conjure up tales of yore of Jews being moiser nefesh to fulfill mitzvos under difficult situations due to the enemies of the Jewish people. Currently the global enemy – the coronavirus pandemic – is the background of the stories. A baby boy was born to Rav Yair and Geulah Baitz, Chabad shaluchim in the city of Limassol, Cyprus, a month and a half ago. All of R’ Baitz’s efforts to bring a mohel to Cyprus failed and traveling to Israel to have the bris performed there would have forced him, his wife and the baby to be quarantined for two weeks. The father turned to Interior Minister Aryeh Deri (Shas) who took the problem to heart and left no stone unturned to find a solution for the problem, B’Chadrei Chareidim reported. Ultimately a solution was found. R’ Baitz secured a private plane and he and his wife and baby flew to Israel, where they were greeted by their relatives in Israel including R’ Baitch’s father-in-law, Rav Boaz Yurkovitz, the Rav of the Chabad community in Lod, and of course an Israeli mohel. The bris was performed in the Fattal Terminal lounge in Ben-Gurion airport on the baby – already a month and a half old. The Baitzs did not enter Israel’s borders and after the bris they flew directly home on the private plane. אולי היום נזכה להשתמש בכרית? בעז״ה #בריתמילה #קורונה #לימסול pic.twitter.com/C44rcxa3Ui — Rabbi Yair Baitz (@limassol_rabbi) May 6, 2020 Deri entrusted his chief of staff, Ruvi Shemesh, with making the arrangements and he worked in cooperation with the Cypriot Foreign Ministry, Health Ministry and embassy in order to receive special permission for the Baitzs to isolate at home upon their return to Cyprus instead of a medical facility. A Train From Ben-Gurion Airport Straight To The Shearis HaMikdash

A plan for a new express train line straight from Ben-Gurion airport to the heart of the Old City has been approved for advancement, Israel’s Transportation Ministry announced this week. The new train, an extension of the current Jerusalem-Tel Aviv express line launched two months ago will enable tourists to travel straight to the Kosel upon arrival in Israel’s main airport. The project will add a new terminal in Jerusalem to the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv line, adding two underground stations in downtown Jerusalem and one in the Old City as well as a 1.8-mile tunnel under downtown Jerusalem and the Old City. The National Planning and Building Council approved the route of the new train but the details have not yet been made public. The project was initiated in 2017 by current Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz (Likud), previously the transportation minister, a post now held by MK Bezalel Smotrich (Yamina). Here, in the Old City of Jerusalem, we will build the Western Wall & Temple Mount train station. It will be named after @realDonaldTrump, who made history and recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Peleg Talmid Arrested Trying to Leave Ben-Gurion Airport

A Yeshiva Bochur named Yehuda Tumback (טומבק), who is affiliated with the Peleg Yerushalmi, was arrested at Ben-Gurion International Airport on motzei Shabbos trying to leave the country. He was taken into custody for not reporting for the draft, in line with instructions from Peleg rabbonim. The talmid is a son of askan Avraham Tumback, a senior Peleg official and a resident of Jerusalem’s Bayit Vegan neighborhood. Tumback, who was heading to kivrei tzaddikim in Europe, was arrested by military police. He was taken to IDF Prison 4, where he remains at this time. He was scheduled to appear in the Yaffo Military Court on Wednesday at which time his detention was extended. For the time being, it appears Peleg does not plan to take to the streets to protest his arrest and incarceration. However, there are some calling for protests so it remains to be seen what course of action will ultimately be taken. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

McDonalds at Ben-Gurion Airport: Open Shabbos with a Hechsher

The McDonalds restaurant operating at Ben-Gurion International Airport opens on Shabbos but is certified kosher by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel. The restaurant was awarded the license to operate in Ben-Gurion Airport’s food court. It is a kosher branch and requested to remain open on Shabbos to service the travelers coming and going on Shabbos. Towards this end, McDonalds turned to the Zomet Institute towards learning if and how the branch may be operated on Shabbos without Chilul Shabbos. Zomet’s chief engineer, Yoni Ben David and his colleague, Daniel Shinsinsky, visited the branch at the airport. Some of what was explained to branch managers includes: • Removing door sensors for refrigerators used in the branch, including on Shabbos. • Heating cabinets with hotplates in the shelves to maintain heat would be programed for Shabbos, to operate in continuously from the start to the end of Shabbos. • Some devices would have to be covered and locked to cover the power switches to avoid turning them off and on during Shabbos. • Food preparations would be done as in guesthouses; cooking on erev Shabbos and only reheating on Shabbos without changing the temperature. There is currently one lawsuit against the Chief Rabbinate of Israel pending with the High Court of Justice, regarding hotels around Israel that operate on Shabbos and are certified kosher, some even mehadrin. A Jerusalem restaurant is suing the Chief Rabbinate because they want a kashrus certificate despite operating on Shabbos, as food is not cooked, only warmed, and persons buy vouchers before Shabbos. No money is taken, or meals charged on Shabbos. They feel since the restaurant is like a hotel, and as such, it should receive kashrus certification. To date, the Jerusalem Rabbinate has rejected requests for certification, prompting the case with the High Court. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

MYSTERY: Who Was on Stopover Flight from Ben-Gurion to Saudi Arabia?

A private plane took off from Ben-Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv last Tuesday, landing for a few minutes in Aman, the capital of Jordan, and from there, it continued to Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. According to the Yisrael Hayom newspaper report, the plane spent less than one hour in Saudi Arabia and then departed and headed back to Israel. At the same time, US Defense Secretary Mark Esper was in Saudi Arabia, and it is presumed there is a connection between the senior US official and the flight that left Tel Aviv. Speculation on social media includes theories that the flight was carrying Mossad Chief Yossi Cohen, while others believe it was bringing Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to Saudi Arabia to meet with Esper and possibly other officials. Saudi Arabia and Israel do not maintain diplomatic relations nor a direct aerial route between the nations. It is added that the flight was tracked on Flightradar24. The plane is registered in the United States, but the identity of the owner is unknown. *****SIGN UP NOW —- GET YOUR NEWS IN RECORD TIME***** Make sure you are one of the more than 22,000 that signed up to YWN WhatsApp Status to receive news in live time. New Takeoff and Landing Path for Ben-Gurion is Driving Modi’in Illit Residents Crazy

A new takeoff and landing path for planes at Ben-Gurion International Airport is driving residents of the chareidi city of Modi’in Illit crazy. Transportation Minister Betzalel Smotrich promises residents the current reality is temporary. According to a Chareidim10 report, it is explained that problems with GPS navigation affecting takeoffs and landings has resulted in the change in the travel pattern for planes, with Smotrich explaining the new path is used in extreme cases only. As reported last month by YWN-Israel, interference has impacted the GPS system assisting takeoffs and landings, and as a result, a new trajectory has been designated for landing when necessary, directly over Modi’in Illit. The new route was prepared by the Israel Airports Authority at the beginning of the year. It is also open now because of the summer congestion and the GPS disruption issue. With the increase in flights during the summer months, residents of the chareidi city insist the new reality is truly unacceptable, pleading for relief. According to a report in the daily Haaretz, the new landing pattern compels planes to fly at a low altitude over PA areas including Bituniya and Ramallah. As a result, the planes are in danger of being targeted by ground-to-air fire, but security officials have given their stamp of approval for the new flight pattern. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

PHOTOS: The Smell Of Durian Led Ben-Gurion Airport Inspectors To The Abandoned Bag

(PHOTOS IN EXTENDED ARTICLE) A black bag left unattended in Terminal 3 at Ben-Gurion International Airport containing durian fruit, which is known for its large size, strong odor and thorn-covered exterior – its offensive smell led officials to the bag, and its contents were destroyed The black bag containing the durians was left next to a trash bin in the reception area of Terminal 3. RUSSIA DID IT: GPS Interference At Israel’s Ben-Gurion Airport Caused By Russia; Report

Israel’s Airports Authority reported this week that for the past three weeks, there has been interference with Israel’s GPS airspace navigation system, causing delays in takeoffs and landings. Galei Tzahal (Army Radio) correspondent for transportation Eliav Betito reported on Thursday morning’s “Good Morning Israel” program hosted by Effie Trigger, that senior officials involved in the affair believe that the reason for these disruptions is a hostile attack by Russia. A senior Israeli security official in Europe met with American officials to discuss the issue of the disruptions, as well as the fact that the IDF also operates various technological means. Israel’s Airports Authority said Thursday that, contrary to public speculation, the unexplained GPS disturbance did not appear to be a direct attack on Israel. It said it was still investigating and trying to solve the problem. Suspicions in local media fell on Russia, which operates an air base in neighboring Syria and has been accused of manipulating global navigation systems as part of cyber-attacks. Israeli officials declined to comment on the reports. Aviation authorities said the incursion impacts cockpit operations, specifically flight routes, but not take-offs or landings. They say they have “changed some of the entry proceedings for landing” at Israel’s Ben-Gurion Airport, without elaborating. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Postcard Discovered Of David Ben-Gurion Writing ‘State Of Israel Has Been Born!’

A postcard written and signed by Israel’s first Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion the very day after he officially declared the state of Israel’s independence was just recently discovered. The postcard, dated 6 Iyar 5748 (May 15, 1948), was sent to the founding father of the kibbutz movement, Shlomo Lavi. In a letter inscribed on the back of the postcard, Ben-Gurion wrote: “The people of Israel have attained the pinnacle of their existence – the State of Israel has been born.” The postcard, which was discovered right before Israel’s Independence Day, will be put up for public auction next week at the Kedem Auction House in Jerusalem. In the letter, Ben-Gurion compares the contrasting realities on the ground in Israel between the time when he immigrated and the day after the establishment of the State of Israel. “When we arrived in this Land, you as Lefkowitz and I as Grün, waving the flag of Labor, we encountered the malaria of the swamps and the corruption of the Ottoman regime. Now, despite the fact that the roar of the cannons has not ceased, and our sons are fighting on all fronts, my heart is joyous upon witnessing this great advancement.” Ben-Gurion espoused statehood and suppressed efforts from both the right and left, which he perceived as grave risks to the existence of a strong, unified military. His vision of the state led him to dismantle the underground units on the eve of the War of Independence and replace them with the Israel Defense Forces. He served as both Prime Minister and Minister of Defense in the first national government and as leader of the Labor Party in succeeding governments. He was likewise among the founders of the Histadrut (General Organization of Workers in Israel) and the first leader of the Yishuv (Jewish community in mandatory Palestine). Ben-Gurion established and led the Mapai workers’ party, after which he resigned to found the Rafi party which eventually merged with Mapai to form Israel’s Labor Party. The letter recipient, Shlomo Lavi (formerly Lefkowitz, 1882-1963) was born in Płońsk, Poland (also the birthplace of David Ben-Gurion). He was also an active member of the Ezra Zionist Youth Movement, which sought to provide free Hebrew education to poor children and was founded by Ben-Gurion and Shlomo Tzemach. Lavi immigrated to the region of Palestine under the Ottoman Empire in 1905, during the period of the Second Aliyah. He then worked in several different positions including at the orchards of Petach Tikvah and Sejera, at an oil production plant owned by the Atid company and on the Kinneret agricultural farms. He was one of the founders of the Jewish defense and paramilitary organization of Hashomer. As a member of the communal Kvutzat Kinneret community in the Galil region, he introduced the concept of the “Kvutzah Hagedolah” (the kibbutz). In 1921, Lavi and several other individuals founded Kibbutz Ein Harod. Meron Eren, co-owner of Kedem Auction House, said: “This postcard is a very special find that encompasses a supreme historic value. Above all, it carries with it nostalgia for the early days of the country, sentiments of renewal, excitement upon a state in the making as well as the exhilaration and joy of a generation that took nothing for granted.” The revelation of the postcard also overlapped with the
