“Kedusha? “Bennett Hasn’t Bothered Visiting The Kosel Since He Became PM”

Shas MK Uriel Busso slammed Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Monday from the Knesset podium for his hypocrisy in his claim that the Chareidim “are using the Kosel as a political tool to topple the government and we “must maintain islands of kedusha, issues that shouldn’t be touched.” “When you served as the Diaspora Minister and when you sat in the opposition, you threw around creative ideas how to preserve the kedusha of the Kosel and said the Kosel must be a consensus, but today your partner and the one who holds the Kosel’s destiny is in the hands of [Reform MK] Kariv!?” Busso said. “You’re not embarrassed to admit that the quarrels of the coalition heads regarding the Kosel are political disputes? You know very well that the site is way above politics.” “But what does it really matter to someone who already sold everything? One thing that’s important for Israeli citizens to know is that from the time that Bennett was appointed to the position of prime minister until today, he hasn’t bothered to come for the traditional photo of all heads of state for a tefilla of gratitude after being elected.” “But I’m here to be dan l’kaf zechus that only someone who was elected in a democratic fashion comes to thank Hakadosh Baruch Hu. In your case, since you were elected by your partners Abbas and Kariv, it apparently exempts you from expressing your thanks.” “You’re ‘horrified’ by the fight over the Kosel just like you’re horrified about all the issues of kedusha for the Jewish people – giyur, kashrus and marriage,” Basso wryly concluded. Ze’ev Elkin: “I Won’t Allow The Kosel To Be Run By Religious Streams”

Following the announcement of Ministers Yair Lapid and Avigdor Lieberman that they will soon advance the Kosel Compromise plan, a Kan report on Sunday said that Jerusalem Affairs Minister Ze’ev Elkin (New Hope) is opposed to the current plan. In closed talks, Elkin said that the Kosel’s management must remain undivided and only the state of Israel and the Jewish Agency, and not “religious streams” can oversee the Kosel. This is contrary to the current plan, which grants the Reform movement official control of a new egalitarian section of the Kosel. “I don’t have a problem with the Reform section of the Kosel but on the condition that the State and the Jewish Agency manage the site,” Elkin said in closed talks. He also suggested a compromise that the Jewish Agency appoint representatives to manage the site, including Reform representatives, with the Agency maintaining ultimate control of the site. Elkin added that if the Reform and Conservative movements are given control of a section of the Kosel it will lead to conflicts in the future, with additional religious streams, such as Gerrer or Belz, Chareidi Litvaks, or Dati Leumi all demanding control of a section of the Kosel. On Friday, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett claimed that the Kosel is being used as a well-financed political campaign intended to topple the government, without any connection to religious conviction. Bennett Against Chareidim: “They’re Using The Kosel As A Political Tool”

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett claimed on Friday that the Kosel is being used as a well-financed political campaign intended to topple the government, without any connection to religious conviction. His comments come as the government begins advancing the Kosel Compromise plan and shortly after a confrontation between religious MKs and Reform MK Gilad Gariv at the Kosel was called off at the last minute. “These days, the Kosel is being used for a planned political campaign, for which much money was raised, with the goal of dismantling the government,” Bennett wrote. “Maybe it will catch on but the damage will be tremendous. Even at times of stormy conflicts, we must maintain islands of kedusha, issues that shouldn’t be touched.” “If there’s a problem, you solve it via dialogue,” Bennett continued. “You don’t decide to go on a full-force divisive campaign about the Kosel. Simply no.” The Shas party responded to Bennett by stating: “Bennett wrote now about the Kosel: ‘We must maintain islands of kedusha, issues that shouldn’t be touched.’ We agree with him 100 percent. There are no problems with the Kosel and no ‘dialogue’ is needed. The Kosel is not the Carmel Market and it’s not open to negotiations. Bennett, try to live up to what you wrote. Don’t touch the Kosel HaKadosh. Don’t change anything. You’ll suddenly find out that there’s no planned campaign…and no fundraising.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Lapid, Lieberman: “We’ll Advance Giyur Reform And Kosel Plan Next Month”

Finance Minister Avigdor Liberman announced on Monday that his Yisrael Beiteinu party will begin advancing reforms to giyur and the Kosel compromise plan next month. The reform to giyur will allow any three municipal Rabbanim, including Tzohar rabbanim, to perform giyur. The Kosel plan will establish a permanent pluralistic prayer area at the Kosel. Foreign Minister Yair Lapid also addressed the subject of the Kosel plan on Monday, saying at a meeting of his Yesh Atid party that he’ll do everything he can to ensure that the plan will be implemented by January. Ironically, the pluralistic prayer area that was established by Robinson’s Arch is almost always empty. Additionally, the Reform movement long ago deleted any references to Israel as “Tzion” and to the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdash in Jerusalem from their prayer books, rendering the Kosel completely insignificant to the movement except as a political battleground. SHOWDOWN AT THE KOSEL: Herzog Intervenes, Reform MK Cancels, WOW Tries To Smuggle Sefer Torah, Hundreds Protest [VIDEOS]

Hundreds of religious people came to the Kosel on Friday morning for Tefillas Shacharis of Rosh Chodesh Kislev to protest the planned provocation of Reform Labor MK Gilad Kariv and the Women of the Wall group. Dozens of religious MKs were planning on physically blocking Kariv from repeating what he did last month – using his immunity to smuggle a Sefer Torah into the women’s section of the Kosel and reading it in a mixed group. However, President Yitzchak Herzog intervened on Thursday and sent a letter to Kariv and Blue and White MK Alon Tal, who also planned on attending, asking them not to come to the Kosel in order “to prevent conflict and unnecessary sinas chinam between elected public officials in front of the remnant of our Beis Hamikdash.” Herzog also promised to do his best to meet the Reform groups’ demands for “equality” at the Kosel, although an egalitarian section of the Kosel designated for Reform groups is available but is almost always completely empty. The religious MKs canceled their visit after Kariv and Tal agreed not to show up. It’s possible that the fact that all MKs have just spent two sleepless nights debating the passing of the budget in the Knesset plenum influenced their decision. Hundreds of police officers were at the Kosel on Friday morning as the Women of the Wall showed up for their usual provocations and antics. They held a “protest” against the regulations at the Kosel by marching while holding empty Torah coverings to symbolize the “discrimination” against women at the site. Scuffles broke out between the WOW members, protesters and the police. Women of the Wall director Anat Hoffman was removed from the area after she tried smuggling a Sefer Torah into the woman’s section, which is against the law. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

ROSH CHODESH PROTEST: 25 MKs To Prevent Reform MK From Violating Status Quo At Kosel

About 25 Chareidi and religious Knesset members will use their parliamentary immunity at the Kosel this Friday, Rosh Chodesh Kislev, to prevent Reform Rabbi MK Gilad Kariv (Labor) from repeating the provocative actions he engaged in last month. On Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, Kariv took cynical advantage of his parliamentary immunity to smuggle a Sefer Torah into the women’s section at the Kosel during Shacharis and read from the Torah amidst the women in the Women of the Wall Group. UTJ MK Meir Porush protested the incident shortly after it occurred by entering a meeting of the Knesset’s Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, headed by Kariv, and reciting Pirkei Tehillim aloud. At the time, UTJ chairman Moshe Gafni said that he will not allow Kariv to repeat his act in the future even if he has to block him with his own body. Religious MKs from UTJ, Shas, the Religious Zionist party and Likud will gather at the Kosel on Friday morning at 7 a.m. in a “protest” to protect the kedushah of the Kosel, and have called on others around the country to attend as well, with hundreds expected to attend. On Wednesday morning, UTJ MKs Meir Porush and Yitzchak Pindrus and Shas MK Michael Malchieli met with Jerusalem District Police Commander Superintendent Doron Turgeman to coordinate the protest with the police. ROSH CHODESH KOSEL DRAMA: Porush Recites Tehillim In Knesset In Protest Of Reform MK’s Provocation

Reform Rabbi MK Gilad Kariv (Labor) took cynical advantage of his parliamentary immunity to smuggle a Sefer Torah into the women’s section at the Kosel during Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan tefillos on Thursday morning. His act was part of the monthly provocation the Women of the Wall (WOW) group engages in every Rosh Chodesh. Kariv then read from the Torah amidst the women in the WOW group. Blue and White MK Alon Tal also participated in the provocation. ראש חודש חשון, זעזוע וביזיון בכותל: ח״כ גלעד קריב מנצל את החסינות שלו ומנסה להכניס ספר תורה לעזרת נשים בכותל המערבי . pic.twitter.com/6Cv0IEqaja — ישראל כהן (@Israelcohen911) October 7, 2021 UTJ MK Meir Porush protested the incident shortly after it occurred by entering a meeting of the Knesset’s Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, headed by Kariv, and reciting Pirkei Tehillim aloud. Kariv, who was initially unaware of Porush’s intentions, first announced that “we’ll respect the Tehillim and wait until Porush finishes.” But Porush continued reciting Tehillim and finally, Kariv warned him to leave. When Porush ignored him, Kariv called the Knesset guards to eject him but Porush then sat down on the floor and refused to move, all the while continuing to recite Tehillim. https://twitter.com/KnessetT/status/1446004583910756356?s=20 Eventually, Kariv gave up and adjourned the session for a break. As Porush left the room, he told Kariv: “I’ll continue my protest until you get away from the Kosel. You stay away from the women’s section and I’ll stay away from here.” “The fact that Gilad Kariv exploits his immunity and persuades other people to violate the status quo at the Kosel and tramples its kedusha is the crossing of a red line that cannot be tolerated,” Porush stated. “It’s a disgrace that must end.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Opposition Leader Netanyahu Davens Ne’ilah At The Kosel

Opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu davened Ne’ilah of Yom Kippur at the Kosel, Kikar H’Shabbat reported. He davened in the minyan in the Kosel tunnels. The Kosel Rav, Rav Shmuel Rabinowitz, served as the chazzan during the tefillah. Netanyahu walked to the Kosel from his apartment on Rechov Haportzim. In recent years, when Netanyahu was serving as prime minister, he used to daven during the Yamim Noraim at the Chareidi shul Yad Tamar on Rechov HaAri in Rechavia. The shul is located close the Prime Minister’s Residence and its proximity eased the burden on Netanyahu’s security detail. Now that Netanyahu’s security detail has considerably decreased, he was free to walk to the Kosel on Yom Kippur. גמר חתימה טובה לכל עם ישראל האהוב! 🇮🇱 pic.twitter.com/UMN5wWKFtB — Benjamin Netanyahu – בנימין נתניהו (@netanyahu) September 15, 2021 (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

KOSEL: Maintenance Work Begins On Precarious Mughrabi Bridge

The Western Wall Heritage Foundation on Sunday announced it has begun maintenance work on the Mughrabi Bridge, which has been deemed unsafe. Structural engineers have warned that the bridge, the only entrance to Har Habayis for Jews and tourists, is in imminent danger of collapse. The foundation’s statement said that the work, which is being overseen by engineers, will last for several days, during which part of the women’s section will be closed. Days after the Meron disaster in May, a municipal engineer hired by the Western Wall Heritage Foundation inspected the Mughrabi Bridge. Citing its poor condition, he urged its immediate replacement and authorized its use only until September. Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem Fleur Hassan Nahoum sent a letter to Prime Minister Naftali Bennet last month warning of the bridges’ precarious state and noting that the experts’ warnings for the past 17 years have been ignored. Nahoum emphasized that the bridge is above the women’s section at the Kosel and “despite the danger, despite the warnings, nothing has been done so far and thousands of worshipers could be injured as a result of the collapse of the bridge.” Also last month, Likud MK Miri Regev submitted a proposal to the Knesset stating that the writing is on the wall for the Mughrabi Bridge and construction work must begin immediately. “In light of the tragic disasters at Mount Meron and Givat Ze’ev, we must not wait another moment to dismantle that bridge,” she wrote. “The blood will be on the hands of everyone who remained silent.” The issue of the bridge is a delicate one as discussions of any changes to the status quo regarding Har HaBayis immediately kindles angry reactions from Jordan and the Palestinians and the spread of propaganda about “Israel’s takeover of Har HaBayis.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Kosel Rav, HaRav Shmuel Rabinowitz, Testifies On The Meron Disaster

HaRav Shmuel Rabinowitz, the Rav of the Kosel and Mekomos HaKedoshim and head of the Va’adas HaChamisha, the “Committee of Five,” which is in charge of the Kever Shimon Bar Yochai complex, testified on Monday to the state commission of inquiry into the Meron disaster, which began its first hearings on Sunday. Rav Rabinowitz began by emphasizing that although the Va’adas HaChamisha is responsible for the Kever complex itself, it is not responsible, and cannot be responsible for what goes on at Meron on Lag B’Omer. “If the state had told me that I’m responsible for the Lag B’Omer event, I would have resigned immediately,” he said, explaining that the Va’adas HaChamisha does not have the capability or manpower to be responsible for such a large and complex event. The Kosel Rav clarified that the Lag B’Omer event is the responsibility of the National Center for the Development of the Holy Places and Israel Police, and this point has been agreed upon by the Deputy Attorney General. Rav Rabinowitz continued by saying that when the Va’adas HaChamisha was formed in 2008, the Meron site was in significantly worse shape than it is now and he insisted on and implemented many changes. “The situation there was terrible – no infrastructure, illegal construction, power cables everywhere. We had to fight a war over every brick we wanted to move. I made a decision that it was forbidden to give in because the site was very dangerous. Any child could have touched an electric cord and been electrocuted.” The commission members asked whether he was aware of safety issues regarding Gesher Dov, the narrow passageway where the disaster occurred. Rav Rabinowitz responded that the safety advisors the committee hired in 2008 and afterward didn’t mention anything about Gesher Dov. Rav Rabinowitz added that he did think that “the whole area looked like the third-world. We requested to plan and rebuild everything and started working on a plan to renovate the entire area.” When asked what he thinks should be done for the future, he responded: “Either the hadlakos should be moved to another place or canceled altogether, except for the hadlaka of the Boyaner chassidus, which has an ancient mesorah.” Rav Rabinowitz said that he welcomes the state commission of inquiry, mentioning that he was personally affected by the tragedy, as he lost his nephew, Menachem Asher Zekbach, z’l, 24, a resident of Modiin Illit who left behind his pregnant wife. Meron Effect: Kosel Mechitzos Tested For Stability

As the Yamim Tovim approach and thousands of visitors are expected at the Kosel, a special test was carried out to ensure the stability of the mechitzos at the site, Kikar H’Shabbat reported. “The test was performed on the partitions themselves as well as on the panels from which the partitions are assembled when needed, to ensure that in cases of pressure or falls they can withstand the load in real-time,” one of the inspectors from Isotest Laboratories said. The government has set the number of mispallelim allowed at the Kosel as 10,000, and the plaza area will be divided into capsules. A conflict arose at the government’s cabinet meeting last week, with the Kosel Heritage Foundation requesting an allowance of 15,000 mispallelim and the Health Ministry demanding the number to be limited to 5,000, the official number of participants currently allowed at gatherings in open areas. A compromise was reached, with the number set at 10,000. Beginning on Thursday, the Kosel plaza will be divided into capsules in accordance with Health Ministry regulations. Chareidi Sefarim Stores Boycott Sefarim of Eliezer Melamed Following His Support For Reform Prayer Section At Kosel

Following Rabbi Eliezer Melamed’s support for a reform prayer section at the Kosel, Chareidi store owners have begun to boycott Rabbi Melamed’s sefarim “Peninei Halacha”, which have been sold in many locations. According to reports in Bchadrei Charedim, store owners have begun packaging up the Peninei Halacha series books in order to return them to the publisher. One store owner told Bchadrei that “All of the sefarim of the ‘Reform Rabbi’, Eliezer Melamed are being packed up from Chareidi stores and sent back. That’s it. It’s the end of an era. We won’t sell his books any longer. Books of Reform Rabbis won’t make their way into the Chareidi communities.” The umbrella organization of the Reform Movement in Israel which calls itself the “Traditional Movement, celebrated Rabbi Melamed’s support. “Rabbi Melamed is leading a brave position with everything connected to building a dialogue between the different streams of Judaism. This is something that we value greatly, especially after Tisha B’Av. Now is the time to tear down the great fences that divide us, to build discourse, and to find solutions together so that we may all be able to live here one alongside the other in serenity.” Rabbi Melamed, who is a Rabbi in the Religious Zionist community, published an Op-Ed in the newspaper “Basheva” where he said that Reform and Conservative Jews should be allowed to pray in the Ezras Yisrael section of the Kosel and that the Kotel Rabbi should make sure that all of their needs and requirements are met, including having a sefer Torah made available to them. “Should there be a suspicion that other Jews will take over the Ezras Yisrael at the time when these communities want to daven there, the Rav of the Kosel will need to make them move to other locations, so as to allow for all Jews who wish to pray there feel like they are the beloved children of Hashem.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Jewish Couple Attacked By Muslim Mob While Trying To Get To Kosel To Celebrate A Birthday

A woman in the advanced stages of pregnancy and her husband were attacked while on their way to a birthday celebration at the Kosel. According to the couple, when they passed Wadi Joz in East Jerusalem, on Thursday, they fell victim to an attack that included a large group of Muslim men throwing rocks at their car and trying to pull them out of the vehicle. The woman suffered an injury to her shoulder and the car was badly damaged, The husband told N12 News, “Waze led us through Wadi Joz. When we were in the heart of the neighborhood we realized that we were caught in an ambush. In front of us, a Toyota Corolla car pulled out and suddenly slowed down. Within seconds, dozens of attackers came from all directions: from vehicles, bus stops, and shops. They shouted ‘Sllah Akbar’ and threw stones at us. It was an assassination attempt. We thought we would not get out of there alive.” “I realized they were going to get us out of the car,” he recalled. “All the windows were shattered and after a quarter of an hour that felt like an eternity, I managed to get around them and escape from there. My wife called the police in tears – at first, they could not locate us, and eventually, a police officer came to rescue us and accompanied us out of the neighborhood.” The couple said that they were very happy that their three children were not in the car at the time, as the gang of Arabs had completely destroyed the backseat thinking that there were kids in the car and wanted to hurt them. The couple was taken to a police station on Har HaZeisim, where they filed a report and a complaint to the police. They also met other families who had suffered a similar situation and who also gave testimony against the same Toyota vehicle that purposely slowed them down. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Gedolei Yisrael: “Don’t Go To The Kosel On Shavuos”

In an announcement published in the Yated Neeman on Sunday morning, Erev Shavuos, HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky and HaGaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein called to the public to refrain from the usual minhag of walking to the Kosel on Shavuos. “During these days, when our enemies are acting brazenly, rachmana litzlan, and are trying to harm those who live in Eretz HaKodesh, it is incumbent upon each person to be mechazeik in all matters, and especially in limmud haTorah on Yom Matan Toraseinu,” the Gedolim stated. “And chalilah to engage in any acts of provoking the nations – which isn’t the derech of the Torah.” “Furthermore, ‘we need to be more machmir in matters of pikuach nefesh than some issurei halacha’ – everyone should distance themselves from protests and all places where our enemies gather.” “Therefore it’s appropriate this year not to place ourselves at risk and provoke [the nations] by walking to the Kosel on Shavous as well as to take heed not to pass by other places that may be dangerous or will provoke the nations.” Instructions not to go to the Kosel on Shavuos or other places that may pose a risk were also issued to Gerrer and Belzer chassidim. A notice to Gerrer chassidim stated that no one should go to the Kosel or frequent places that may be dangerous. In Belz, it was announced in the Beis Hamedresh HaGadol in Kiryat Belz in the presence of the Rebbe: “A request and announcement to all the bochurim from all Belzer yeshivos not to leave Kiryat Belz in Jerusalem from Erev Shavous until after the Chag, and especially not to go to the Old City and the Kosel.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

WATCH: Mispallelim Flee From Kosel Amid Sounds Of Explosion

A large number of Israel Police forces operated throughout the night on Motzei Shabbos as Arab rioters on Har Habayis attacked officers with rocks, chairs, and fireworks. Police officers used riot dispersal methods on the Arabs, including rubber bullets, tear gas, and shock grenades. The sounds of the explosions could be heard by mispallelim at the Kosel. Close to midnight, a particularly loud explosion was heard at the Kosel plaza, frightening the mispallelim, who thinking they were under attack, fled from the area. It later became clear that the explosion was from fireworks on Har Habayis. Later on Motzei Shabbos, police cleared the Kosel plaza for a period of time due to the chance of Arabs throwing rocks on the mispallelim. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

PHOTOS: 1st Time In 1.5 Years: HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Visits The Kosel

HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky visited the Kosel on Monday, the first day of Chol Hamoed in Israel, for the first time since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, HaRav Chaim visited the Kosel twice a year, on Chol Hamoed Sukkos and Pesach. Thousands excitedly waited for HaRav Chaim to approach the Kosel, eager to catch a glimpse of the Gadol HaDor on a rare trip outside Bnei Brak. The visit was documented by photographer Ezra Tervalisi. As per his minhag, HaRav Chaim also visited the home of his talmid, HaRav Yisrael Meir Druck, in the Givat Shaul neighborhood of Jerusalem.

Kosel Birchas Kohanim To Be Held Twice This Pesach

On the heels of Israel’s successful vaccination program and the subsequent decrease in the national infection rate, the traditional Birkas Kohanim tefilla will take place this Pesach, albeit with some differences due to the remaining restrictions on mass gatherings. Due to the tens of thousands of people who normally attend Birchas Kohanim at the Kosel every year, the tefillah will take place twice this year on two consecutive days to allow room for everyone who wants to attend. The first Birchas Kohanim tefillah will take place on Monday, March 29, the first day of Chol Hamoed in Eretz Yisrael, and the second one will take place the next day, on Tuesday, March 30, the second day of Chol Hamoed. On both days, Shacharis will begin at 8:45 a.m., the first Birchas Kohanim (during Shacharis) will be at 9:15 a.m., Mussaf is at 10:10 a.m. and the second Birchas Kohanim (Mussaf) will be at 10:15 a.m. Both tefillos will be honored with the presence of Israel’s Chief Rabbis, HaRav Yitzchak Yosef and HaRav Dovid Lau, the Kosel Rav, Rav Shmuel Rabinowitz, the Religious Affair Minister Yaakov Avitan, and Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion. The Kosel Heritage Foundation requests that those who attend the tefillah on Monday refrain from participating in the tefillah on Tuesday to allow room for everyone who wants to participate. Last Pesach, at the beginning of the pandemic, Birchas Kohanim took place with just a minyan of participants, and this past Sukkos, Birchas Kohanim was again closed to the public and was carried out with only 20 participants. The Kosel HaMaaravi Isn’t Left Out of Israel’s Inoculation Program

As Israelis line up to be inoculated, the Kosel isn’t left out of the quest for univeral good health and is being inoculated with preservatives ahead of Pesach, the Israel Antiquities Authority stated last week. However, unlike Israel’s vaccination program against COVID-19, the Kosel’s inoculations regularly take place twice a year, ahead of the Yamim Noraim and Pesach. Israel Antiquities Authority conservators and Western Wall Heritage Foundation engineers carry out a thorough inspection of the Kosel, examining every stone and inject grout into crevices using syringes. The work is carried out according to halachic parameters established by the Rav of the Kosel, Rav Shmuel Rabinowitz, almost 18 years ago, following consultations with Gedolim, especially HaGaon HaRav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, z’tl. “The Wall’s 2,000-year-old stones are subject to natural weathering and we’re making sure to strengthen them,” said Yossi Vaknin, the Israel Antiquities Authority’s head conservator in the Kosel area. “Our routine biannual inspections enable us to track the condition of every single stone. We have an ‘identity card’ for each of the hundreds of stones in the plaza and monitor dozens of features. Our most recent survey revealed that it was necessary to treat the ‘peel’, or outer layer, of several stones. Our work on the historic wall is non-destructive. We do not drill into the stone, but delicately inject dissolved stone into the gaps and fissures. Limestone-based grout is injected into the fissure as a liquid, and when dry, the crack is repaired. It is the best possible method of ‘healing’ the stones and the ultimate defense against weathering for the most important stones in the world.” Vaknin added that the conservation work is carefully carried out in a way that won’t damage the Kosel’s unique ecosystem with its own life forms, including plants and birds. “The Kosel is a unique ecological environment that supports its own life forms. A lot of plants have taken root in the Wall’s stones – particularly thorny capers, golden drops and golden henbanes. Added to this, many birds nest in the Kosel, including the common swift which arrives every year, ravens, and doves. As part of our conservation work, in recognition of the importance of the site’s unique flora and fauna, we also preserve this ecosystem while guaranteeing the stones’ stability, thus ensuring that the Kosel will remain strong for at least 2,000 more years.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

U.S. Ambassador David Friedman Visits Kosel As He Departs From His Post [PHOTOS]

Outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman arrived on Wednesday night at the Kosel in order to daven Maariv at the same time that the inauguration ceremony for President-elect Joe Biden was taking place in Washington. Ambassador Friedman came with his wife Tammy and was accompanied by the Kosel Rabbi, Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion and his wife, and the CEO of the Kotel Heritage Society Mordechai Eliav. For Friedman, this was an act of closure. When Friedman arrived to take his post as the Ambassador, four years ago, the first thing he did was to travel to the Kosel to daven. Friedman said: “This is a very emotional moment for me. From the first time that I arrived in Israel in 1971 for my Bar Mitzvah and until now, my last official day as the U.S. Ambassador, my heart has always been in Jerusalem.” Friedman also said that one of the highlights of his job was that it allowed him to come each year and participate as a Cohen in Birkas HaCohanim on Chol Hamoed, and that he hopes to continue to do so in the future. Friedman spent his last week visiting important places around the city to bid his farewell as the outgoing Ambassador. Among the places he visited were the Knesset, United Hatzalah headquarters, and the City of David. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

A Shidduch Story: A Bus Ride, An Orphan, And Tears At The Kosel

A shidduch story that took place in Israel has been making the rounds in Israel in recent days, Kikar H’Shabbos reported. HaRav Chaim Shmreler, who is heavily involved in the issue of shidduchim for older singles, told the story in a shiur that was uploaded on Kol HaLashon. The story began about a year ago, when Reb Gershon Klatzkin, a shadchan from Beitar Illit, suggested a shidduch to the father of a yasom who was learning in a yeshivah in Jerusalem. The father was apparently not interested in the shidduch because when the shadchan called back to inquire about it, the father didn’t answer his phone calls. Two weeks passed, and one day when R’ Klatzkin was on a bus to Jerusalem, he suddenly overheard a man saying on the phone: “I haven’t answered his phone calls for two weeks already. I don’t think the shidduch is mat’im (appropriate).” The shadchan, who until then was only acquainted with the father over the phone, realized who it was, and decided to take action. He introduced himself to the surprised father and suggested to him that he reconsider the shidduch. The shadchan was successful in convincing the father to change his mind. The shidduch proceeded quickly and ended with a mazal tov and a jubilant chassan and kallah. A day after the vort took place, the mashgiach of the chassan’s yeshivah approached the shadchan and told him the “real story” on how the shidduch ended up proceeding, despite the father’s initial reluctance. At the very hour that R’ Klatzkin “coincidentally” rode the same bus as the chassan’s father and overheard him speaking about the shidduch, the chassan himself was at the Kosel crying bitterly. “Ribbono shel Olam, I’m broken,” he davened. “I don’t have a mother. I didn’t have a mother at my Bar Mitzvah, I didn’t have a mother to ask me how my first day of yeshivah went, and I didn’t have a mother to send me homemade to yeshivah.” “I never complained despite the fact that it pained me,” the bochur continued to daven. “But now I can’t anymore. All my friends have married and I’m left alone in yeshivah.” When the bochur finished his tearful tefillah, he returned to yeshivah, where a phone call from his father about R’ Klatzkin’s shidduch was waiting. Days later, he was engaged. The incredible power of tefillah, especially the tearful tefillah of a yasom at the Makom Hamikdash, had an immediate effect. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

WATCH: The Kosel & Chareidi Jews Through The Eyes Of An Emirati Tourist

An Emirati tourist who recently visited Israel posted a video on his social media account documenting the warm welcome he received from Chareidi Jews at the Kosel. A Chassid welcomed the tourist and his Jewish companion to the Kosel and when he heard that the tourist was from Dubai, he greeted him warmly with “Salam Alaikum!” The tourist encouraged his Jewish companion to don tefilin and excitedly filmed and narrated the scene for his followers. He captioned his post: “An Emirati tourist in Israel received a wonderful welcome from the most religious Jews in the holiest place in the world for Jews. They are not like they’re portrayed by the media!” https://twitter.com/uae21999/status/1333110863369211905?s=20 He posted a second video of his visit to the Kosel, writing: “The Qatari media doesn’t want us to see this wonderful fact. Al-Qaradawi from Qatar issued a fatwa prohibiting Arabs from visiting Jerusalem! Qatar has manipulated our emotions in order to distance us from the truth.” [The Qatari-owned Al Jazeera network is notorious for its anti-Israel, anti-Semitic and anti-American rhetoric.] https://twitter.com/uae21999/status/1333096032687845382?s=20 (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

COVID Fringe Benefit? A Rare Quiet Rosh Chodesh At The Kosel As WOW Stays Away

As Israel’s Kosel Hamaaravi re-opened on Sunday following a four-week lockdown, mispallelim began flocking to the site to daven once again at the Makom Hamikdash and recite the special tefillos for Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan. About 1,500 mispallelim were present at the vasikin minyan for Rosh Chodesh on Monday morning, divided into separate capsules. The tefillah was made even more special by the fact that for the first time in years, the provocative members of the Women of the Wall were missing in action, choosing to carry out their monthly “Rosh Chodesh protest” on Zoom. Instead, only Jews who were solely interested in davening were present, lending the tefillah a special peacefulness and achdus. “The Kosel Heritage Foundation calls out to continue this path of a lull in protests at the Kosel plaza every Rosh Chodesh, leaving it as a site of unity, per the mesorah in Israel,” the foundation stated. WATCH: Rejoicing At Dawn: Neitz Minyan Resumes As Kosel Re-Opens

Israel began implementing the first steps in emerging from its four-week nationwide lockdown on Sunday, including the reopening of the Kosel plaza for a restricted amount of mispallelim in capsules. During the lockdown, only those who reside within a kilometer of the Kosel were allowed to daven there, including on Chol Hamoed Sukkos, when tens of thousands usually are “oleh l’regel” throughout the Yom Tov. Birchas Kohanim took place with only about 20 participants. Early Sunday morning, the Gabaiim of Neitz minyanim at the Kosel, who had to daven elsewhere for the past month, showed their joy at being able to resume their regular davening at the Makom HaMikdash. WATCH: Birchas Kohanim At The Kosel With Just 20 Participants

Birchas Kohanim at the Kosel took place on Monday, the second day of Chol Hamoed in Israel, in a limited format with only 20 people allowed to participate instead of the tens of thousands that normally flock to the Kosel on Chol Hamoed Sukkos and Pesach for a mass Birchas Kohanim ceremony. Among those present were Chief Rabbis Rav Dovid Lau and Rav Yitzchak Yosef, Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion, Kosel Rav Reb Shmuel Rabinowitz, as well as US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, who himself is a Kohen. “Birchas Kohanim which is written in the Torah holds a promise of protection from harm and peace for Yisrael,” the Kosel Heritage Foundation stated. “During these difficult days, we’re in need of bracha many times over. Unfortunately, the special ceremony cannot be held with the participation of tens of thousands of Jews but we will fulfill the mesorah in a limited format while adhering to regulations and connecting all of Am Yisrael in Israel and the Diaspora.” This morning, by invitation, I will attend the “Birkat Kohanim” service at the Western Wall — normally attended by thousands, today just 20. I will pray for God’s mercy and healing upon all those throughout the world afflicted with Covid-19. Refuah Shlema to all! — Ambassador Jack Lew (@USAmbIsrael) October 5, 2020 (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

WATCH: “Mi Shebeirach” At The Kosel For President Trump

Following the Birchas Kohanim ceremony at the Kosel on Monday morning with the participation of only 20 people, the Kosel Rav, Reb Shmuel Rabinowitz, recited a Mi Shebeirach for the refuah sheleimah of President Donald Trump. As YWN reported on Sunday, Hagaon HaRav Yitzchak Zilberstein paskened that Jews are obligated to daven for the refuah shleimah of President Trump due to the obligation of Hakaras HaTov (gratitude). Rabbi Zilberstein added that we should daven for Trump using his name and the name of his father, Donald John ben Fred Trump, according to the opinion of the Maharshal. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)
